Oskar Ibru donates cow, relief materials to Okuama IDP camp

The Chairman of Ibru Organisation, Olorogun Oskar Ibru, has donated relief materials to the Ewu-Okuama Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp at Ewu town in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.

Among the items donated include a cow, cartons of fish and other materials to support the feeding of the victims of ravaged Okuama displaced Indigenes.

Thousands of Okuama community indigenes in Ewu-Urhobo Kingdom in Delta State have been homeless since March when soldiers invaded the community and destroyed it over the killing of 17 military personnel by unknown gunmen.

Following the destruction of the community, the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, established the Ewu-Okuama IDP Camp to house displaced persons pending the rebuilding of the community.

Presenting the items on Wednesday to the management of the IDP Camp at Ewu town, Olorogun Oskar Ibru said the gesture was to show solidarity with his kinsmen in Okuama and support what government and other individuals are doing to bring succour to Okuama people.

Oskar, represented by the Chairman of Ewu-Okuama IDP Camp Management Committee and former Editor of the Guardian Newspapers, Mr. Abraham Ogbodo, assured that he would continue to be of support to the people of Okuama and Ewu-Urhobo Kingdom in their difficult time.

“I have to be very grateful to the almighty God that people are rallying around us. I never expected we would have this level of support, especially from our Urhobo brothers and sisters.

“Not long ago, it was Olorogun (Engr.) Matthew Edevbie that came to make donations to the camp. Today, I am here on behalf of another illustrious son of Urhoboland. His name is Olorogun Oskar Ibru. He’s the Scion of the Ibru dynasty. He’s the eldest son of the famous Olorogun Micheal Ibru.

“I got in touch with him and I told him we have an emergency in our hands as Urhobo Nation. I told him we needed his support. As I speak, he’s not in the country, but he reacted. The cow that’s standing there is part of the donation. We also bought cartons of fish and other items.

“On behalf of Olorogun Oskar Ibru and incidentally, we are also from the same Agbarha Kingdom, I present these items as his donation for the running of the camp. When he returns to the country, he might be physically here to do more. He’s in solidarity with the people of Okuama and the entire Ewu Kingdom”, Ogbodo stated.

Receiving the donations on behalf of the Camp Management Committee, the IDP Camp Commandant, Mr. Austin Ohwofaria, thanked Olorogun Oskar Ibru and the Ibru family for the gesture, noting that the Ibru family is known for their charity deeds to the Urhobo Nation.

Ohwofaria also commended the chairman of the Camp Management Committee, Mr. Ogbodo, for using his position to attract donations and supports to alleviate the suffering of Okuama displaced indigenes.

The Camp Commandant, flanked by other officials of the committee, said “we thank Olorogun Oskar Ibru for this wonderful donation.

“This is the fifth cow our chairman (Ogbodo) is personally influencing to the camp. We are happy that he’s our chairman. He has shown capacity. He has taken the running of the camp as his personal project.”

He further prayed for Olorogun Oskar Ibru and other donors for their support for the people of Okuama, Ewu Kingdom and the camp management committee.

Also speaking, the women (Ewheya) leader flanked by other IDPs including children, thanked Olorogun Oskar Ibru and Urhobo people for supporting them.

NDLEA urges states to set up rehab centers

An International Non-Governmental Organisation (INGO), Search for Common Ground (SCG) has identified drug abuse, land dispute and child trafficking among others as factors fueling criminality and disputes in the Niger Delta.

The Country Director of SCG, Fatima Madaki, said the project’s findings, recommendations and activities were aimed at reducing violent crime in Niger Delta communities.

Madaki said: “It is impressive to see that issues around drug abuse has come up and how that further exacerbate violence to conflict in the community. How land dispute is increasing divisions in communities. We are also seeing child trafficking. All of these affect the people.”

She spoke during the maiden meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on community-centred approach to tackle criminality and violence in the Niger Delta tagged, Fostering Inclusive Community Security Approaches to Address Systemic Drivers of Violence and Criminality, which was organised by SCG, PIND, EU, SDN and AAPW.

She said: “The project is a community centred approach to address criminality and violence. We have structures that are embedded in the community level, local government level as well as state level where the issues are analysed and solutions proffered by the community*.

While reeling out some of the challenges impeding the success of crime fighting, Madaki urged the government to build facilities to complement efforts made by non-governmental organisations.

She said: “Insecurity is on the increase across the country and as practitioners, what we are seeing is that the dynamics are changing. It is a very fluid environment that needs due attention to addressing the challenges.

“We want to see government supplementing our efforts because they have the core responsibility to ensure security provided in communities. They have the responsibility to ensure that facilities are provided in communities to build peace architecture and sustain it over time.

“The government has all it takes to be responsive. On behalf of all the communities across Nigeria, we are advocating government to give attention to resource and structures in building peace across Nigeria.”

However, the Project Coordinator of the EU Projects in PIND, Aniekan Achibong, said the meeting was timely and called on government to implement effective measures in tackling criminality in the region.

In its presentation, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) lamented a surge in drug use by youths, noting that criminality was propelled by use of illicit drugs.

The Deputy Commander in charge of Operations and Training, NDLEA, Rivers State Command, Emmanuel Ogbungbada, insisted that the major driver of criminality was drug.

He said: “Major driver of crime is drug. There is high level of crime because of the level of drug abuse. We are calling on members of the public to provide us with useful information that will help us reduce this menace to its barest minimum.

“We need information that will help us crack down on those involved and we will protect the identity of those who will volunteer useful information to us.”

He called for the establishment of state-owned drug rehabilitation centres, adding that the facility would provide better opportunity for treatment of victims.

He said: “We are advising Search for Common Ground to make efforts to reach out to the state government to see how they can build a state owned drug rehabilitation centre.

“The facility we have can only contain 30 people and it is for only males. We don’t have female treatment facility that is why we usually refer people to UPTH and others.

“If government can build a rehabilitation centre, it will go a long way in addressing the number of issues around drug and its effect.”

NDYM: Why we refused to join hunger protest against Tinubu’s govt

The Niger Delta Youth Movement (NDYM) has explained why youths of the region shunned the nationwide hunger protest against President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

The group said Tinubu has impacted positively on the nine states of the region through various programmes that have brought development and economic empowerment to youths of the area.

The NDYM stated this on Friday, August 2, in a statement signed by its National President, Comrade Ekene Major Frank, and made available to the Nation in Uyo.

According to Frank, Tinubu has a harmonious relationship with the youths of the region as demonstrated in the recent Ethnic Nationalities Youth Conference organized by the Niger Delta Development Commission NDDC.

The statement reads in parts: “I, on behalf of the National Executive Council NEC of The Niger Delta Youth Movement appreciate the youth of the Niger Delta Region for refusing to join the protest against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“While not feigning ignorance on the economic challenges in Nigeria, we have seen verifiable indices of commitment towards reducing these challenges in the short term and gradual revamping of our economy in the long run.

“There are also strong and concrete demonstrations of good governance within the 9 states of our region through deliberate programmes that are touching the citizens in the rural areas.

“I must commend the synergy demonstrated by federal agencies (MDAs) and state governments in our region.

“His harmonious relationship with the youths of the region came to the fore at the recent Ethnic Nationalities Youth Conference organized by the Niger Delta Development Commission NDDC”.

He noted that the Tinubu administration has provided political inclusion for the people of the region as can be seen in the emergence of Senator Godswill Akpabio as the Senate President.

“It is on record that after about 45 years the south south has now produced a Senate President.

“Under the administration of President Tinubu, the NDDC management has not been fragmented.

“Under President Tinubu we have a down-to-earth Amnesty Coordinator.

“Under President Tinubu, the Southeast Development Commission was signed into law – something that was supposed to be done immediately after the Nigerian civil war.

“Niger Deltans are aware that President Tinubu met a comatose economy and we are giving him the benefit of the doubt that within three years in the saddle, we shall be singing a different song”, he said.

The NDYM President while thanking the Senate President and the Samuel Ogbuku-led management of the NDDC, reminded the President about the holistic youth empowerment at the just concluded Niger Delta Ethnic Nationalities Youth Conference.

“We urge that action should be expedited. This period should also be a wake-up call for all public officeholders to always report progress in the area of human capital development.

“I thank all members of NDYM at the state, local government, and ward levels as well as leaders of other ethnic nationalities in the region for refusing to join the protest”, he said.

  • Concerned Delta youths ask others to shun protest

Concerned Delta youths ask others to shun protest

A group, Concerned Delta State Youths, has reiterated its call on youths to shun the ongoing nationwide hunger protest.

It lamented several lives and properties have been lost already across the country on the first day.

The group stated this was what it foresaw for which it appealed to youths on several.ocassions before to shun the nationwide protest and embrace dialogue.

Addressing members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists at Press Centre in Warri and Press Centre, Ughelli, the Director General of the body, Activist Kelvin Ejemudo and Comrade Obakporo said the atmosphere was too charged and tensed for the protest to continue as more live properties will be destroyed across the country.

According  to them: “There is need for youths of Delta state  to shelve the protest. We also cautioned against the destruction of Government’s property, if the protest must continue, the  youths must be law abiding and  peaceful.

“We also want to call on security agencies to exercise caution to ensure that protesters are not molested but accorded their due place according to the law of the land.

”‘Security personnel must be law abiding, it is not  enough to see youths gather and storm them and say they are planning protest, he that alleges must prove it.

“The protest has yielded  positive results as the Federal Government, within these few days before the nationwide protest today, Mr. President has started to implement some policies to improve on the economy of the country especially in the area of Naira against dollars, among others.”

The body advised the government of the day to alleviate the suffering of the people by rolling out more palliatives and better economic policies to cushion the effects of the harshship on the people.

“Federal Government should not relax yet but should ensure that the Warri sea ports work, Warri and Kaduna refineries are back in full operation to enable the people afford the fuel to save them from the untold hardship.

“As a group, we will not be party of the protest, so we called on the youths to shun the ongoing nationwide protest and engage the Government in dialogue where no life will be lost to pave room for peace and sustainable progress,” it added.

  • Akpabio didn’t say ‘he would eat while Nigerian youths protest – Okolugbo

Akpabio didn’t say ‘he would eat while Nigerian youths protest – Okolugbo

Consultant Communications and Strategy office of the Senate President Sir Kenny Okolugbo has faulted media reports Senate President Godswill Akpabio said that “he would be eating while protesters are protesting”.

In a statement, Okolugbo noted that Akpabio never said “he and others will be EATING while the protesters will be PROTESTING”.

He described the report as uncharitable, saying that its motive was to bring Akpabio in conflict with the Nigerian masses.

Explaining further, Okolugbo stated: “He was only quoting the MD of the NDDC that said the Niger Delta Youths have never had it so good with himself and the Amnesty boss on the saddle that it was a government of the Youths who will not be interested in regime change rather will own the GOVERNMENT and will not protest but rather be eating.

“The import of his visit was a declaration that the nine states of the Niger Delta will not be involved in any protest being the most senior government official from that region he feels their pain and that there is hunger in the land. This event was covered by a national television live.

“Speaking at the NDDC sponsored youth stakeholders summit in Port harcourt today 30th July 2024 he reiterated that protest almost led to Anarchy in Kenya and the negative effects is still reverberating. He said while the degradation in the Niger Delta due to oil exploration and exploitation persist there have been no protest.

“The fact that the government is doing so much to address the situation at hand like the minimum wage bill, passing into law and signing by the President of the Northwest Development Commission, the Southeast Development Commission recently.

“He launched the immediate payment of 10,000.00 youths to earn instantly N50,000.00 per month, as a way of ameliorating the pains and hardship being experienced but like the pregnant woman that takes nine months to deliver the pains that would accompany the birth of the child is also unbearable.

“The people of the Niger Delta have been urged to exercise patience with the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu. That one year is not enough to judge the performance of the administration.

“According to Kenny Okolugbo Consultant Communications and Strategy Office of the Senate President the youths where filled with so much joy and excitement and passed a voice vote of no protest and confidence on the Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The empowerment scheme is for those not gainfully employed and it was reiterated that it will be devoid of politics and strictly for the nine states of the Niger Delta all the local government areas and wards”.

Niger Delta ex-agitators pull out of proposed protest, say promoters plotting anarchy

Hundreds of ex-agitators in the Niger Delta have rescinded their initial decision to partake in the proposed hardship protest, saying promoters of the event have unconstitutional motives.

The ex-agitators, who rose from an emergency meeting in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, July 31, resolved to support the administration of President Bola Tinubu, insisting that with more time the President would resolve all the problems afflicting the country.

The position to abstain from any form of protest was endorsed by ex-militant leaders in the Niger Delta region, national leaders of concern Niger Delta Ex-Agitators, National leaders Niger Delta Movement for Good Governance, ex-freedom fighters of the Niger Delta region, Coalition of Niger Delta Students and Coalition of Aggrieved Niger Delta Youths.

Speaking on behalf of the stakeholders at the meeting, the National Secretary of First Phase Ex-agitators, Gen. Nature Kieghe, said though protest is the right of the people, any such event with the motive of destabilising the country to bring about anarchy should be resisted by the citizens.

Kieghe said having gone through the demands of the promoters, the ex-agitators decided to pull out of it in the interest of peace and development of the region and the country.

He particularly condemned the demand for change of government by the promoters saying it revealed that the entire objective was not to demand food governance but to violently try to take over power.

He said: “In a democracy that we practise, there is no room for anarchy; the only way the government can be changed is through an election. When one election cycle closes and you fail to actualise your political ambition, you need to wait for another election cycle to try again.

“Therefore, the election remains the only constitutionally accepted means of replacing any government, it is not by protest. As ex-agitators, we won’t join a protest already designed to cause violence.

“We still have confidence in the capacity of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reposition this country. He is barely one year in office and we have resolved to give him more time to allow the gains of his policies and programmes to permeate the nooks and crannies of this country.

“But if after his tenure and we fail to see significant progress, then we will return to take another decision ahead of the 2027 election.

“We make bold to declare that the subsisting leadership cannot be changed unless there is an election. What they are trying to achieve is mutiny, a coup and it has no place in a democracy.

“The organisers have wrong motives and we can’t identify with them. The government was elected and it cannot be removed through protest. We already have many crises on our hands and we cannot allow for any breakdown of law and order in our region”.

Ahead of the planned August 1 nationwide protest, the Nigerian League of Youths for Advocacy has dissociated itself from the exercise.

In a statement after a congress in Abuja, Monday, National Secretary, Hon. Al-Amin J.A. Agada, emphasised their stance and support for the government.

The group said it was premature to criticise the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Agada labelled those organising the protest as faceless and urged over 20 million members across the six geopolitical zones and the Federal Capital Territory to distance themselves from the planned protest.

Acknowledging the current hardships faced by Nigerians, Hon. Agada appealed for patience and faith in President Tinubu’s government.

Agada expressed confidence in President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, urging young Nigerians to remain patient as the government’s policies take effect. He also thanked the President for his quick approval of the Minimum Wage Bill, now an Act of Parliament.

The group assured Wike none of their members would participate in the August 1st protest. It further commended Wike for his infrastructural initiatives that are transforming the FCT into a modern city.
