Sapele robberies, kidnappings: Igbuya urges security agencies to brace up

The Delta Representative in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Hon Monday Igbuya has called on security agencies in Sapele and its environs to up their games over the incessant cases of kidnappings and armed robberies in the town.

Igbuya, a former Delta Speaker, in a chat with some journalists, decried the worsening cases of insecurity in Sapele and its environs in recent times, noting that hardly can a day passes without someone being kidnapped or robbed, stressing that residents in Sapele are currently living in fear.

He said in the past one-and-half year, the security situation in the Sapele has been relatively good but sadly, in the past few months, it’s like the police and other security agencies have been caught off guard and shifted from pure security duties to chasing of yahoo boys why the town is under kidnappers siege.

In the past two weeks, no fewer than five persons were kidnapped while some were lucky to have escaped.

One Mr Ola, a surveyor, his wife and his children were reported to have been kidnapped in front of their house at NDDC road over the weekend.. The kidnappers later released their children the same day and the couple after collecting undisclosed sums of money as ransom.

There are reports Sapele has been under kidnappers and armed robbery siege. People were reported to have been kidnapped and robbed at will in their homes, particularly at Shell Road, NDDC Road, Amukpe, Ghana-Ogberekoko and one-man village.

According to Igbuya: “The worsening cases of insecurity in Sapele and its environs is becoming very worrisome and it’s getting out of hand and if urgent steps are not taken to arrest the development, it will affect the social economic development of the town.

“So, I am calling on the Nigerian Police and other sister security agencies to up their games and stop this dangerous drift, because no one or nowhere is safe as it is today in Sapele, people are being kidnapped at will in their homes, along the streets and even public places unchallenged.

“You can imagine, a young man who came for the preparation of his father-in-law’s burial was kidnapped in front of the inlaw’s house in the Ghana-Ogberekoko area, and in the past four days, nothing has been heard about his whereabouts.

“Yesterday I also heard that they almost kidnapped someone in front of Foodland in Okpe road in broad daylight, but he was lucky to have escaped, it’s now everyday thing in Sapele and its environs.

“The situation is getting out of hand, the security agencies should rather focus their attention on more critical issues than chasing Yahoo boys in town, they should up their games and change the dynamics.

“In past one, or two years, the town has been relatively peaceful and there was a huge improvement in terms of security, but the situation is becoming very alarming now. You know I was a victim of kidnapping in 2009 and the experience is horrifying.

“No community can experience meaningful development without a peaceful environment. So, I also appealed to our youths to shun crime and take up lawful means of livelihood, crime doesn’t pay.

“I also called on residents of Sapele to be more vigilant, this is not about herdsmen, this is the case of our people being involved in the kidnapping scheme, so we have to be very careful now.”

Group dismisses Assembly’s suspension of Rivers Gov’s expenditures

The People’s Congress (PC) has dismissed the resolution of the Martin Amaewhule-led Rivers Assembly suspending all expenditures of Governor Siminalayi Fubara until he re-presents his budget before the House.

The pro-democracy group, in a statement by its President, Dr Nicholas Udenta, said that their actions are mere political grandstanding, lacking legal basis and legitimacy.

Udenta said according to the law, they are no longer members of the Rivers State Assembly, having defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress.

He further described the resolution as an “illegal joke,” stressing that Governor Fubara had in December 2023, signed the budget of N800 billion into law after presenting it before lawmakers led by the former speaker, Edison Ehie.

He emphasised that the purported resolution by Amaewhule and his colleagues is a “distractive joke” that should be disregarded.

He also noted that the only recognised Rivers Assembly, according to law and the people of Rivers State, is the one led by Hon. Victor Oko-Jumbo.

    people.

“We are deeply disappointed at the resolution of Martin Amaewhule and his co-travellers, which purportedly suspends all expenditures of Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara until he re-presents his budget before the House,” the statement said.

“First and foremost, Martin Amaewhule and his colleagues have lost their membership of the Rivers Assembly, following their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress on the 11th day of December 2023, as declared by the then speaker, Edison Ehie, on 13th December 2023.

“Therefore, Martin Amaewhule and his colleagues lack the locus standi to make such demands from a democratically elected governor. Their resolution is simply an illegal joke taken too far. We urge the Governor to completely ignore their distracting actions.

“Secondly, the 2024 Rivers State budget was signed into law in December 2023, after being presented and approved by lawmakers led by the former speaker, Edison Ehie. Most of the projects captured in the budget are either completed or nearing completion.

“Nowhere in the world is a budget presented twice, nor is there any state in Nigeria where a budget is presented to two Houses of Assembly. Most importantly, there’s only one House of Assembly in Rivers State, which is led by Rt. Hon. Victor Oko-Jumbo.

“That’s the only one recognised by law and the people of Rivers State. The Martin Amaewhule-led faction passing anti-people resolutions doesn’t represent the interests of Rivers people but that of their paymasters.

“Their latest resolution is nothing but a comical display of illegality. They are committing political suicide by continuously seeking to sabotage the developmental efforts of Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Rivers people are watching.

“We urge Governor Fubara to remain focused on his duties and not be swayed by this illegitimate group’s threats. Similarly, we advise the current speaker, Rt. Hon. Victor Oko-Jumbo, to ignore their distractions and continue to discharge his responsibilities with integrity.

“It is essential to recognise that the Amaewhule-led group’s actions are mere political grandstanding, lacking legal basis and legitimacy. We assure the good people of Rivers State that the authentic lawmakers are committed to serving their interests and ensuring the state’s progress.

“We warn the former lawmakers to desist from their illegal actions, as they are no longer recognised as members of the Rivers State Assembly. Their attempts to disrupt the state’s governance will not be tolerated.”

  • MOSOP chieftain welcomes new HYPREP coordinator

MOSOP chieftain welcomes new HYPREP coordinator

A chieftain of the Movement for the Survival Of Ogoni People (MOSOP) Fegalo Nsuke on Sunday hailed President Bola Tinubu for his choice of Dr Olufemi Adekanmbi as new coordinator of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), saying the appointment marked a turning point for the Ogoni clean-up project.

The appointment of Adekambi, a former Commissioner for Special Duties, Culture and Tourism in Ondo State and member of the Nigerian Environmental Society (NES), was announced by presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, on Saturday.

Nsuke who is recognised in a section of MOSOP as President, noted that even though the new coordinator was not from Ogoni, what mattered  most under the present circumstance was competence and capacity to undertake the clean-up of Ogoni.

He lamented that Ogoni sons have been in the position in the past but could not deliver satisfactorily, adding “what matters to us is someone who can deliver. We have had Ogonis there for eight years and we’ve been disappointed. So if Adekanmbi does it right, we are fine with that.”

He also set an agenda for the new HYPREP coordinator. He said: “We want him to prioritize water provision and implement the integrated water project which was approved by the Governing Council of HYPREP in 2017.

“We will also want him to focus more on proper clean-up of both surface and underground pollution. That’s actually his mandate.”

Prof Iniodu George, an environmentalist and professor of environmental and public health parasitology in the department of environmental biology at the University of Cross River State, has commended Tinubu for the choice of Adekanmbi.

He said in an interview on Sunday: “The President anticipates the exercise of competence, dedication, and professionalism in fulfilling the mission of the HYPREP to restore and revitalize communities impacted by hydrocarbon pollution, with a primary focus on Ogoniland in Nigeria.

“We want him to prioritize water provision and implement the integrated water project which was approved by the Governing Council of HYPREP in 2017.

“I expect the new coordinator to spring into action to review the state of affairs in Ogoni clean-up effort and engage best available technology to enhance timely and permanent results in the remediation of the impacted ecosystems, as well chart a course for the provision of sustainable infrastructure and socioeconomic amenities, especially access to clean water, sanitation and healthcare.

“The appointment of a new project coordinator for HYPREP coming on the heels of the 2024 Niger Delta Summit, where the chronic devastation of the region’s environment was again vehemently decried by participants and natives, signifies a pragmatic intention by Mr. President to address the issues of oil pollution in the Niger Delta.”

  • MOSOP knocks NDDC boss for excluding Ogoni people from Niger Delta summit

MOSOP knocks NDDC boss for excluding Ogoni people from Niger Delta summit

The Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) has berated the managing director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Samuel Ogbuku, for excluding Ogoni people from the Niger Delta Summit.

MOSOP described Ogbuku’s actions as a “grave injustice” against the Ogoni people.

In a statement yesterday, MOSOP’s spokesperson, Imeabe Oscar, said that Ogbuku’s justification for excluding Ogoni stakeholders from the summit is untenable and extremely disrespectful.

“The attention of the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People, MOSOP, has been drawn to a comment credited to the managing director of NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, in the ongoing Niger Delta summit, wherein the NDDC boss was quoted as saying the reason for not including MOSOP and relevant stakeholders from Ogoni was simply because Ogonis have denied the Federal and State governments access to the untapped crude,” Oscar stated.

Oscar also asserted that Ogbuku’s comments revealed a profound lack of understanding of the history and challenges faced by the Niger Delta region.

“A flashback of NDDC mission and vision reads respectively: ‘To offer a lasting solution to the socio-economic difficulties in the Niger Delta region,’ ‘To facilitate the rapid and sustainable development of the Niger Delta into a region that is economically prosperous, socially stable, ecologically regenerative, and politically peaceful,’” Oscar continued.

He accused Ogbuku of prioritising personal gain over the welfare of the region, stating: “We are aware that he sits and supervises over a kleptocratic form of government and is there to make a fortune and feather his own nest, against the norms.”

Highlighting the environmental devastation in Ogoniland, Oscar emphasised: “Ogoniland has been ecologically devastated and has lost all her major sources of livelihoods,”

MOSOP demanded Ogbuku’s removal from office, alleging that his actions were designed to sow disunity within the Niger Delta.

“We are calling for the sack of Ogbuku for neglecting the people who have the right to be involved in the Niger Delta summit,” Oscar concluded.

All efforts to speak with the NDDC spokesperson proved abortive at the time of filing this report.

  • A word for NNPC traducers

    A word for NNPC traducers

    By Solomon Daminabo

In life, it is an unwritten law that one can not be a friend to all. Put more succinctly, it can never ever be possible that you must be loved by all and sundry, whatever you do for, or mean to them. In fact, there’s a saying out there on the streets that if you truly want to be liked by all, then you should go and start selling ice cream fast.

Trying to befriend everyone means you will not be able to maintain genuine friendships. This is because friendships require love, care, and attention. All these can not be given to too many people at once. Therefore, being a friend to all will result in, literally, being a friend to none!

The story of Nigeria’s national oil company, the NNPC, is akin to the above truisms about life. Ideally, the company, which should represent a national treasure for all Nigerians, is not loved by all. And right from its days as a Corporation, it has, from all indications, understood that reality despite what it does for Nigerians and irrespective of its status as a major enabler for the Nigerian economy. Such is life and that will never change.

Of recent, there appears to be a recent negative trend within the Nigerian social media parlance, where the online commentariat, largely made up of cyber arm-chair critics and so-called self-acclaimed energy experts, come down hard on the NNPC, in a well-orchestrated onslaught. This latter-day bashing comes in the form of ill-informed opinions or skewed interviews granted and targeted principally at its operations and often times, towards its management.

These criticisms have as their hidden intent, a well-hatched plan to bring the Company, and by extension, the entire nation, down to its knees. For instance, how else can one explain a scenario where these critics, most of whom knew nothing about the workings and operations of the Oil & Gas Industry, sit down and concoct lies against a Company that is pivotal to Nigeria’s economic progress and long-term survival.

What do they stand to gain by making inaccurate comments that are potentially damaging towards one of Nigeria’s major business institutions? What is the benefit if their National Oil Company goes down as a result of their highly cynical opinions that seem to keep discerning investors away? Where is their patriotism? Where is the national pride and where lies their conscience?

These traducers, in their myopic view, always think NNPC, led by Mele Kyari, is the problem of Nigeria. No, NNPC can never be Nigeria’s headache. Again, these critics, in their warped thinking and imagination, believe they or their paymasters can do better, when asked to steer the ship of a Company that is gradually fighting its age-long demons and gradually coming back to life.

A saying goes that “critics are like eunuchs in a harem, they have seen it done times without number, but they can never do it themselves.” The NNPC critics fall in this category, because they have , many at times, been witnesses to how the Company, turbo-charged by the new legislative chest of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) is gradually transforming into a world-class commercial entity of choice. Sadly, like the eunuchs, these on-watching cynics can never do it themselves.

The NNPC Management, especially under Kyari’s stewardship, has never shied away from its many challenges. If anything, it has always been seen to face the challenges headlong. The result of that confrontation has seen the company’s fortunes growing in leaps and bounds.

Since mounting the saddle in July 2019, the whole world has seen howthe Borno-born technocrat consistently keeps demonstrating a commitment to reform and grow the NNPC, almost from the scratch,  as a true National Oil Company that delivers value for all Nigerians and other stakeholders.

Little by little, the NNPC is getting recognized by international organizations and industry experts, as it continues to deliver value to Nigerians. The company’s

critics will do well to know that in recent years, the NNPC has recorded some significantly giant strides, which have pitched the Company on a growth trajectory and on a greater pedestal to compete favourably with its global peers.

Perhaps these critics’ vision was blurred by hatred when the NNPC management, led by Kyari in 2019, took a then perennial loss-making entity by the scruff of the neck and emplaced it on the path of profitability and prosperity. It was quite unprecedented that in 2020, NNPC declared a profit of N287 billion. And like the typical Ijebu Garri, the profit kept rising, growing to N674 billion in 2021 and climbing to an all-time high of N2.5 trillion in 2022.

Today, the NNPC Limited is much more transparent and accountable, a development that has earned it a recognition even at the global level. In September 2023, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), it signed up to the United Nations Global Compact (UNGA), becoming the first state-owned oil company to do so.

It is no longer news now that NNPC Limited has carved a unique sobriquet as the “champion of the Federal Government’s Gas Revolution.” As we speak today, the company remains at the forefront of driving Nigeria’s domestic gas utilization initiatives, which are aimed at improving power generation, industrialisation, revenue generation and diversification of the energy mix across the country.

From the Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) to the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline Projects,NNPC Limited has remained focused on deepening in-country gas utilisation. And by the time the company gets done with inter-connecting the major network of gas pipelines across the country in line with the nation’s Gas Master Plan, one can confidently say that Nigeria’s economic growth is assured.

Already, NNPC is revitalising Nigeria’s refining capacity through the rehabilitation of refineries in Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna. This is aside encouraging strategic partnerships in modular refineries, all aimed at increasing domestic refining capacity and in the long run, securing Nigeria’s energy future.

NNPC’s critics should also be bold enough to see how the company is spearheading diversification efforts and exploring new business opportunities in renewables, power, petrochemicals, medical and telecommunications sectors. Today, the company represents the true evidence that Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan is well on course.

Think about the major contributions offered by the NNPC to the Federal Government (royalties, fuel subsidy payments, FAAC allocations and even critical interventions during the dreaded COVID-19 pandemic), and you will know whether it is wise to join the bandwagon of such cynical bunch of Nigerians who want to see the NNPC go down to its very foundations.

The milestones are many and we can go on and on and on reeling them out here. However, no matter if one tries to explain NNPC’s modest achievements amidst its many teething challenges to its traducers, it will look like speaking to deaf ears. This is especially true when these critics have chosen never to appreciate anything good coming from the company.

It is a herculean trying to deter the critics from their trade of “airing their views” on the NNPC. It is even more difficult trying to win these cynics to love the NNPC, even as a form of national duty and pride. Just as it is a waste of time advising the critics to engage in constructive criticisms to grow the NNPC and help it attain its aspirations.

It is, however, instructive to state that insisting on bringing down a National Oil Company no matter its efforts to overcome its challenges is the greatest disservice to Nigeria. This is because when the four towers of the Company go down (God forbid), everyone, including the cynics and their kith and kin, will be adversely affected.

As the largest national oil and gas company on the entire African continent, the NNPC has what it takes to grow and grow into a global leader like its peers in Brazil, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia. But it can only achieve that when it remains focused and not distracted with pebbles and stones from naysayers, detractors and traducers.

Daminabo, an oil & and gas lawyer, wrote in from Yenagoa.
