Video clarifies Edo Gov aspirant Ighodalo’s interpreter report

A video has emerged clarifying what and how an aspirant for the off season Edo governorship election, Asue Ighodalo conveyed his message in his Esan home.

In the video, he said he is a true Edo son and contributed immensely to the growth of democracy since its inception in Nigeria.

Ighodalo is contesting under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

A video on X by a PDP chieftain, Anthony Ehilebo, seemed to contradict report alleging that the aspirant hired an interpreter to speak to his people.

The video seen by our correspondent has no interpreter as reported.Ighodalo was only seen in the video addressing the media on how grounded he was in Edo and Nigeria’s politics.

In a typical Edo accent in the video, he said he had been doing things in Esanland.

Revealing his house which stood behind him in the village, he said he had done a lot of work with different governments with regards to the economy of the State.

He said: “I do things in Esanland. But it is only that we are not noisy. My brother is here, I am here, my parents were here. I am a true Esan boy. I am not going to use home boy, because they have used it badly. I am an Esan Boy.”

Recalling his contributions to the development of the State since 2008, he said: “I am a true Esan boy. I am a true Edo boy. I am a true Nigerian. That is what I am. Since 2008, I have been in the economic team of the state, starting from the administration of Comrade Governor (Adams) Oshiomhole. Since Godwin Obaseki came in as Chairman, Economic Team, I have been coming to Edo State to support and advise the government.

“I have been advising since 2008, which is 15 years ago, which means that I came into Edo State, five, six, so many times a year for government business, not to talk about my own business. So, people can say what they like. Because we are not noisy, and because we are not jumping from one ‘mama put’ to another, does not mean am not a true Edo boy.

“This issue of an Edo boy, this issue of a true son of the soil is in the heart. There are many of our brothers and sisters in the diaspora who are more Edo than many of them who live here. So it is in the heart, it is what you do in your heart, it is not how many pepper soup joints you go. So, all those of us in the diaspora, those of us in the diaspora in Nigeria, diaspora abroad, all the best hands must come to develop Edo State.

“Someone cannot sit in the village or in ‘mama put’ and say the rest of us cannot come and develop our state. It is not done. We must all come together and develop Edo State, plus the people in ‘mama put,’ plus the people in Canada, we must come together and develop Edo.” State.”

Sharing the video, Ehilebo wrote: “So people.. They will tell you Asue Ighodalo has no home in Esan..

“Ladies and gentlemen, hear from him directly…

“No be them say them say…

I am at home with my people…”

The video has already generated over 400 comments with the Diaspora vowing to rally support for the aspirant.

  • Relocate military bases, barracks to hinterlands to tackle crimes, FNM tells FG

Relocate military bases, barracks to hinterlands to tackle crimes, FNM tells FG

The Future Nigeria Movement (FNM) has appealed to the federal government to order the immediate relocation of all military bases and barracks in city centres to the hinterlands to tackle crimes and terrorism in the country.

The leader and founder of FNM, Livingstone Wechie, insisted that such facilities should be relocated to the outskirts, rural, and urban areas across the country to help contain security challenges.

Wechie in a statement in Port Harcourt on Thursday, November 30, observed that there are about 180 military bases and barracks across the country and that most of them are either located within the city centres or have been seriously caught up, encroached upon, and overrun by urbanisation.

He said: “The implication is that the civilian and military population mix can compromise Nigeria’s security climate and architecture as is the case.

“It is important to note without prejudice that in the event of territorial attacks, it is easier for logistical deployment of hardware from those non-urban areas, and quick responses will be better achieved.

“The city centres should be left mainly for the police and civil defence including other intelligence security institutions of state to interface with civilians and manage internal security challenges as is constitutionally required.

“The high visibility of military personnel in regular civilian activities and settlements is undoubtedly demystifying and undermining our military forces.

“The duty of the military is principally for the protection of the nation’s territorial integrity.

“Their concentration on the internal daily activities in the urban areas stand a chance to ostensibly compromise that patriotic duty.  Most of the high crimes including terrorism, banditry, highway kidnappings and others take place in the various areas outside the urban settlement because they are easy entry routes that have been conquered due to lack of adequate military control”

Wechie said the relocation of military bases and barracks would result in making available massive land for economic development within the urban areas.

He added: “Some of these lands can be reallocated for industrial and other real estate purposes while others may be reallocated to the original native owners as incentives for their age-long patriotic contribution to national development vide critical state infrastructure.

“FNM recommends that the welfare of both the military and other security agencies including the Nigerian Police Force should be made a national emergency or priority.

“The welfare outlook of our security personnel is most embarrassing and this has made them beggarly, vulnerable for all sorts of compromises and willing tools for extremely abusive tendencies. To this effect, all steps must be taken to save the situation to avert the disaster at hand.”

  • Okaeben hails appointment of Umar Ajiya into NNPCL board

Okaeben hails appointment of Umar Ajiya into NNPCL board

Former Edo Commissioner for Youth and Sports Hon Chris Ewere Okaeben, has lauded the recent appointment of Alhaji Umar Ajiya  into the board of the  Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) as the Chief Financial Officer, describing it as a “beacon of meritocracy, resilience, and dedication to service.”

Okaeben gave the commendation in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

President Bola Tinubu approved the appointment of   the board of the NNPCL, reappointing  Mele Kyari as the Group Chief Executive Officer, according to a statement by his Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale on Monday.

According to Ngelale, the appointment takes effect from Friday, December 1,adding that the President also appointed the management team of the corporation with Chief Pius Akinyelure as Non-Executive Board Chairman.

Okaeben, also  a former member of the Edo State House of Assembly, while commending the appointments, said : “Umar Ajiya, a stalwart in the oil and gas sector with a commendable track record at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), has earned his stripes through years of dedicated service.

“His appointment to the NNPCL Board is not a mere gesture but a recognition of his meritorious contributions to the sector.

“President Bola Tinubu, known for his meticulous approach to governance, has undoubtedly placed a square peg in a square hole with this appointment.

“Umar Ajiya’s financial acumen and unwavering commitment to the success of NNPC are evident in his track record. “Throughout his tenure, he has consistently upheld the highest standards of financial management, contributing significantly to the corporation’s success.”

Okaeben condemned a recent media report  by a certain Northern Group, faulting the appointment of Umar Ajiya.

The group alleged  Ajiya  sponsored the campaign of Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general elections, saying his appointment  would be ‘counterproductive for the party and for the country.’

However, Okaeben said  the claim by the group was a campaign of calumny  geared towards distracting the President Tinubu’s administration from appointing Nigerians of competence and character manage public offices in the ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda.

“In the intricate world of Nigerian politics, where each move is scrutinized and every appointment dissected, a recent article has surfaced, questioning the appointment of Alhaji Umar Ajiya as a Financial Officer on the NNPCL Board under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

“ It is paramount to address this insidious attempt to tarnish the reputation of a seasoned professional, Umar Ajiya, and the commendable efforts of the President in steering the NNPCL towards the goals outlined in the Renewed Hope Agenda.

According to him: “The insinuations made by these faceless characters, cloaked under the guise of a northern group, are baseless and lack substance.

“ It is crucial to acknowledge that in the realm of opinions, even a mentally unstable person can have an opinion. However, the attempt to smear the reputation of Umar Ajiya appears to be rooted in personal vendettas and the ambition of individuals who covet positions within NNPC.

“The President’s commitment to selecting individuals based on merit, rather than succumbing to undue influence or lobbying, is a testament to his dedication to advancing the nation.”

He  added:  “Some of these  faceless characters pay substantial amounts of money to people, including Imams in both African and Arab nations, just to ensure the displacement of these talented Nigerians and take over their jobs that was never lobbied for in the first place.

“The appointments of Umar Ajiya and others are a result of their outstanding service and alignment with the vision of the President. Nigeria must remain vigilant against attempts to sow discord and must, instead, celebrate the strides made by individuals who have earned their positions through merit.

“The collective sentiment of many Nigerians resonates with the belief that President Bola Tinubu’s choices are guided by a commitment to national progress. Umar Ajiya’s appointment stands as a beacon of meritocracy, resilience, and dedication to service.

“Those seeking to undermine this appointment should redirect their energies towards contributing positively to the nation’s growth rather than fostering baseless narratives.”

Allow Sylva breathe, ex-N/Delta freedom fighter tells Jonathan

A former Niger Delta freedom fighter, Pastor Reuben Wilson, has faulted former President Goodluck Jonathan’s recent comments against the former Minister of Petroleum, Chief Timipre Sylva.

Wilson said in a statement on Monday that it was wrong for Jonathan to have said that he would have relocated his mother from Bayelsa State if the former Minister had won the recent governorship election.

He urged the former President to conduct himself as an elder statesman in the politics of the State, rather than supporting a particular candidate or party.

Wilson, who was the Southern Ijaw local government coordinator of the APC Bayelsa gubernatorial campaign council, stated these in a statement on Monday, where he asked Jonathan to allow Sylva to breathe by not fighting him and Bayelsa APC.

The South-South Coordinator of the Asiwaju Group, TAG, and Founder, Pastor Reuben Initiative For Good Leadership and Accountability, warned APC members in the State to beware of the new found romance between Jonathan and the leaders of the party.

Wilson also faulted the recent visit of the ex-President to the APC National Chairman, which he said was interpreted by many as a ploy to negatively influence the party leadership against Sylva.

He wondered why Jonathan had to visit the party leadership in such a time he described as critical, when the APC had just been allegedly robbed of its victory at the governorship election in Bayelsa.

The ex-warlord also asked Jonathan to desist from allegedly trying to influence the courts to secure a favourable outcome for Diri in the just concluded Bayelsa gubernatorial election, insisting that the APC will reclaim her supposed stolen mandate via the courts.

“He is a highly revered elder statesman and should therefore, confine himself strictly to that enviable role and status. He should guide his utterances and actions as such. He should treat all political actors in the state as part of his political family and stop politicking for any particular candidate or party.

“The recent utterances and actions of Dr Goodluck Jonathan are not palatable. Such utterances are distasteful and provocative; and shouldn’t be coming from a person of the status of the former President.

“Dr Goodluck Jonathan demonstrated the highest level of statesmanship when he conceded defeat to former President Buhari in the 2015 presidential election and he got applause from political leaders across the globe.

“We were all proud of his level of statesmanship and expected him to continue in that light to attract development to our dear state but unfortunately, he has derailed from that enviable height and earned himself the wrath of every public-spirited and patriotic Bayelsian who had hitherto loved him dearly.

“My call on the former President to conduct himself as elder statesman and desist from working against the political interest of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Bayelsa State chapter is strengthened by the fact that I have been one of his ardent supporters in his political career but he is losing my respect and support due to his latest utterances and actions with respect to the just concluded off-cycle Bayelsa gubernatorial election.

“The new found romance with the hierarchy of the All Progressives Congress (APC) by the former President is seen by many as a ploy to negatively influence the party leadership against Chief Timipre Sylva.

“The recent visit by the former President to our National Chairman in this critical period when our party has just been robbed of its victory at the Bayelsa State gubernatorial election leaves a sour taste in the mouths of many and so many questions are begging for answers.”

  • Corruption, weak system, poor fiscal policy, bane of economic growth – Ochei

Corruption, weak system, poor fiscal policy, bane of economic growth – Ochei

The keynote speaker  at the Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) 2023 Convention and Lecture series, Dr. (Mrs) Doris Amaka Ochei,  has identified corruption, a symptom of weak economic governance and poor fiscal policy as  major challenges for economic growth in Nigeria as it undermines tax collection.

The forensic accountant stated this at the lecture which held at the prestigious Golden Tulip Hotels, Asaba, Delta State capital.

The event where Governor Sheriff Oborivwore was represented by Mr Lucky Omokri was chaired by Chief Samuel Eshenake, secretary, Uvwie Chieftaincy Council.

Discussants included Hon. (Barr) Bridget Anyafulu, member, Delta Assembly and  Dr. Frank Nwugo, Director of Operations, Delta State Inland Revenue Services (DSIR).

Ochei, who is also the Founder and President, Doris Amaka Ochei Foundation, pointed out that when perceptions of corruption are high, residents will be less willing to pay taxes, fearing that their taxes will be misused or misappropriated.

According to the DAO Foundation President, “Strengthening public financial management and enhancing the efficiency and equity of public spending will build trust in the system and improve compliance and revenue collection.”

She explained that while increase in government spending can lead to increased economic growth, an increase in taxation may hamper economic growth, which besides reducing people’s purchasing power during recessions and less revenue for businesses, can as well as lead to greater unemployment and reduction in spending and economic activity.

She posited that fiscal policy can restore confidence in the government.

“It can help people and businesses feel that economic activity will pick up and alleviate their financial discomfort,” Ochei said.

She added, “Therefore, there is a strong need for government at all levels to balance revenue generation and economic growth, which is what this presentation seeks to address.”

In balancing and fiscal reforms, Ochei said expanding the tax net would help generate more revenue, which must be utilised productively through transparent and accountable means.

She said expanding the tax net rather than increasing taxation as canvassed recently by the Institute of Taxation, is in support of the fact that while tax mobilisation is important for revenue generation, it must be done in a way to expand the tax net and does not overburden existing taxpayers.

“Thus, the government needs to balance revenue generation with promoting economic growth and development, without harming the economy or specific sectors,” she pointed out.

For Delta State, Ochei acknowledged that there is an abundance of revenue sources at the disposal of the State Government because the taxes collectable are enormous.

Against this background, she averred that to balance fiscal policy and taxation for economic growth in the State, Delta State Government needs to take note of the following issues:

Be careful about Debt and Deficits: Excessive debt can lead to financial instability, higher inflation, higher interest rates, and high debt servicing costs.

Equity and Fairness: Policymakers must strike a balance between taxing the wealthy and corporations and the need to avoid negative economic consequences.

Grant Incentives for Investment because high taxes on capital gains, dividends, and business income can discourage investment and entrepreneurship.

Budget Prioritization: Prioritize spending on areas that have the most significant impact on growth, such as education, infrastructure e.t.c.

Income Inequality: Government should balance growth with policies that redistribute wealth and support social safety nets.

Economic Cycles: Since economic conditions can change rapidly, it is important to be prompt in adjusting fiscal and tax policies to respond to economic downturns or overheating.

Unintended Consequences: Policy makers must note that changes in fiscal policy or taxation can lead to unintended consequences, such as tax evasion, tax avoidance, or shifts in economic behaviour.

While hinting that the topic of fiscal policy and taxation is both intricate and multifaceted, with no one- size-fits-all solution, Doris Ochei said however, that some overarching lessons can be learnt. Such lessons include the underlisted:

Balancing revenue generation and economic growth is an art and a science, requiring careful planning, sound economic principles.

Effective fiscal policy is countercyclical, efficient, and equitable. It should be adaptable to changing economic conditions and designed to foster sustainable and inclusive growth.

“As we navigate the intricate landscape of fiscal policy and taxation, let us remember that our choices have a profound impact on the lives of our citizens and the future of our society.

“Our shared responsibility is to strike the right balance, ensuring both revenue generation and economic growth for the betterment of society as a whole.

“To entrench a better fiscal policy and taxation in Delta State, as well as other States in Nigeria.

“Delta State Government should leverage information and communication technology to improve revenue generation.

“Information technology should be used to bring more economic agents within the tax system to ensure that the State’s tax system is progressive, neutral, fair and efficient.

Read Also: Ochei laments ex-Delta acting governor’s death

“To broaden the tax base, the State needs to include more and more diverse payers in the tax net, not necessarily increasing the current tax rate

“Governments should formulate policies to bring the informal economy and agriculture into the tax system. Delta State and the country at large should strive to improve governance in revenue collection by combating corruption.

“Also, while expanding the tax net, promoting tax education, and using consultants could increase revenue potential, the government at all levels needs to ensure that the process is transparent and accountable.

“Fiscal policy measures must balance multiple objectives to ensure transparency, accountability, and effective communication, Dr. Doris Ochei recommended.

  • Warri, Effurun hotel owners, residents, others lament as power blackout enters day 7 in Delta

Warri, Effurun hotel owners, residents, others lament as power blackout enters day 7 in Delta

Hoteliers, residents and other business owners in Warri, Effurun and their environs have lamented the continued power outage in the commercial nerve centres of Delta State, saying that their businesses are fast crumbling to the total blackout.

Warri, Effurun, Osubi, Otokutu and their environs have been in total darkness for over seven days without explanation from the management of BEDC Electricity Plc on the development.

They appealed to the Delta State government and the management of BEDC Electricity Plc. to intervene by restoring power supply to the areas.

Some business owners, especially hoteliers who spoke on the development with journalists on Wednesday bemoaned the power outage, stressing that businesses are folding up over the development.

They posited that they were losing customers over their inability to purchase the diesel at the current price of N1,200 per litre to provide power for their private businesses and offices.

Speaking on the power outage, Efemena Goodluck, a hotel manager in Osubi, the hometown of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, lamented that his hotel spends an average of N1.150m daily to purchase diesel to provide electricity for their customers.

Efemena noted that hotel owners can no longer continue with such spending when they are yet to pay workers their October salaries.

He expressed fears that if BEDC does not immediately restore power supply to the affected areas, hotels and other business owners might be forced to lay off staff due to the high cost of keeping their business afloat.

Reacting to the blackout, one of the biggest hotel owners in Delta State and the Managing Director, Lascurt Hotel, Ekpan in Uvwie, Mr Austin Wareyai, called on Governor Oborevwori to intervene in the power issue in the area line with his administration’s promise to create jobs and attract investors back to the twin-cities of Warri and Effurun.

Wareyai, who operates the only underground club in the State, said: “If we love this city we need to speak up. The entire Warri, Uvwie, Osubi and their environs have been totally cutoff from the national electricity grid for the past one week.

“A closed mouth is a closed destiny. All influencers and media practitioners from Warri and Uvwie should speak up. Many businesses may likely shutdown and put our youths back to the labour market if nothing is done. BEDC is doing nothing about the blackout.”

A welder, Mr. Peter Bala, told newsmen that he had not worked for over seven days since the area was thrown into total blackout. He added that the situation was compounding the economic woes of the people.

Also speaking, a hotel owner in Warri who pleaded anonymity, explained that epileptic power supply in the city was killing businesses, calling on government at all levels to intervene in the situation in Warri and Uvwie in the interest of sustaining businesses.

The hotelier observed that with the current price of diesel and cost of running hospitality centres due to the prevailing economic situation in the country, members of their union were thinking of shutting down operations.

“I am a hotelier and owner of other businesses in Warri and Uvwie. Since the hike in prices of diesel and fuel, we have been running at a loss. What are you going to gain when you spend N1,200m buying diesel daily. Without power supply, no business can operate. The situation is worse off with the total blackout in the last seven days. We are in a dilemma.

“Many of our colleagues have been thinking of shutting down operations temporarily because we can’t continue to sustain the high cost of running these hotels. By the time we shut down thousands of workers will become unemployed and you can imagine the security implication.

“We are appealing to President Bola Tinubu to pay serious attention to power generation and supply. It’s very key to driving business and investment.  Also, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori should intervene in the power situation in Delta State. Businesses in Delta State particularly Effurun, Warri, Udu and their surroundings”, he stated.

When contacted on Wednesday, the Warri Regional Public Affairs Manager of BEDC Electricity Company, Mr. Curtis Nwadei, regretted the power outage in the areas, explaining that the fault that caused the blackout is from Transmission Company of Nigerian (TCN).

Nwadei, however, disclosed that its officials were working with engineers from TCN to restore power supply to the affected areas in the state.

“As we speak, we are working hard to restore light to the affected areas in the state. The fault is with TCN, and not BEDC. We have restored one of the two faulty transmission transformers and we are currently testing them for power to be supplied. We regret the blackout which our customers have been experiencing”, he added.
