  • Of opportunists and vitriolic attacks on Mele Kyari

Of opportunists and vitriolic attacks on Mele Kyari

    • By, Kunle Fajimi

The drawback of achievements and accomplishments in public life is that it often sparks jealousy and unrestrained animosity towards the successful person.

In these circumstances, people frequently go to the extremes to physically hurt the target of their anger, as demonstrated by Cassius’ visceral hatred of Julius Caesar in William Shakespeare’s classic.

As an alternative, they can file a false complaint with a higher authority and, as is the case in Nigeria, attempt to remove the person from office. One important point to note about the whole thing is that most often this hate stems from the loss of certain privileges enjoyed by the detractors as a result of the coming into office of the individual whose removal from office is being sought.

This has been the story of Malam Mele Kyari, Group Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). In 2019, Kyari took over as the Group Managing Director (GMD) of NNPC after Dr. Maikanti Baru left. After the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021 came into effect, the NNPC transformed into a commercial corporation two years later, and he was appointed Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the organization.

Those who have closely followed Kyari’s progress since his appointment as head of the NNPC four years ago have observed that the organization has gradually changed from being what many in and outside of Nigeria have variously described as an organization whose operations were so secretive that they made the Neapolitan mafia appear like boy scouts, to an organization that is transparent and adheres to international best practices. There is evidence at hand to support this claim.

It is therefore unexpected that a few anonymous and well-paid hack writers have continued spreading lies in spite of the overwhelming evidence of the organization’s deep-rooted transparency under Kyari’s direction as well as the numerous commercial successes (I will address this in a moment) that the NNPCL has documented.

A few days ago, one of them—posing as Engineer Olabode Lawson and claiming to be a “retired senior oil executive”—accused Kyari of being the cause of nearly all of the issues that the Nigerian oil industry is currently facing.

He blamed Kyari for the Naira’s sale at the parallel market for N1020 to the dollar, adding insult to his absurd accusation!

As a player in the Nigerian oil and gas industry, it is my responsibility to correct the record so that Nigerians are not misled. I do not intend to repeat his accusations against Kyari here or to lend credence to what is clearly patented falsehood sold by a hired hand. So I will concentrate on a single, significant accusation made against Kyari by Olabode, “a retired senior oil executive,” who, even two years after the NNPCL’s demise, continues to refer to it as such!

Olabode claims that since Kyari was appointed, Nigeria has had no operational refinery and its daily oil production has dropped from 2.4 million barrels to 1.4 million barrels. It is obvious that our “retired senior oil executive” has an endless supply of mischievous ideas. The matter of turnaround maintenance for our refineries is a policy decision made at the highest level of government, with the Minister of Petroleum Resources spearheading the process on behalf of the Federal Government, as every Nigerian who is familiar with the workings of the country’s oil and gas sector knows.

It is obviously the height of foolishness to blame Kyari for a problem that the nation’s leaderships, going all the way back to the late General Sani Abacha’s administration, have been unable to solve.

If Olabode were to be honest with himself about the fall in our oil production quota, he would acknowledge that, starting about 2013, the problem of oil theft from Nigeria and the actions of cartels operating in the creeks have conspired to hinder efforts to meet our allotted oil production quota. In order to supplement the efforts of Nigerian security services, the governments of Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari, in particular, employed a private security company since they were so focused on ending the threat.

Speaking during a panel session at the Practical Nigerian Content Forum (PNCF) late 2022 in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, the Chief Investment Officer, NNPCL Upstream Investments Management Services (NUIMS), Mr. Bala Wunti, revealed that Nigeria was speedily recovering from months of under-production with oil production at 1.59 million barrels per day as at then. Wunti stated that cooperation between NNPC, it’s partners, the private security contractor and other industry stakeholders allowed achievement of the 1.59bpd production, revealing that sizeable portion of lost production volume has been restored.

Contrary to Olabode’s claim, it is documented that Kyari did more than any other NNPC/NNPCL boss in recent memory to assist the government in overcoming the obstacle. It is commonly known that “The Crude Theft Monitoring Application” was created by the NNPCL under Kyari’s direction. The portal offers application choices for validating crude a sales paperwork and for reporting events with fast follow-up and answers.

In order to contain the threat, Kyari brought top government officials to the Niger Delta creeks prior to the application’s release. These officials included Chief Timipre Sylva, the previous Minister of Petroleum Resources, Gen. Lucky Irabor, the then Chief of Defence Staff of the Nigerian military, and Mr. Gbenga Komolafe, the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Upstream Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).

This move proved to be successful, as shortly after Kyari declared that criminals had been illegally connecting the Forcados Terminal to the sea for four kilometres, allowing them to syphon off Nigeria’s oil for nine years.

These initiatives were successful, as evidenced by Fourth Quarter figures from the NNPCL, which showed that in addition to Nigeria’s oil production increasing to 1.6 million barrels from the previous level of 1.2 million, the nation had once again taken the lead as Africa’s largest producer, surpassing both Algeria (1.021 mb/d) and Angola (1.088 mb/d).

Since these numbers and Kyari’s other accomplishments as NNPC (L) helmsman are publicly available, they may be readily verified. It is interesting to observe that the oil giant has actually done better under his leadership, despite the fact that many of his traducers accuse him of numerous transgressions. For many years, the NNPC, for example, was losing money. The corporation announced a profit for the first time in 2022, reporting N674.1 billion in 2021—a huge 134.8 percent rise over the N287 billion reported in 2020.

Resolving seemingly unwinnable conflicts with its economic partners, particularly the International Oil Companies (IOCs), is another significant accomplishment of Kyari’s management.

The Kyari-led NNPCL signed various production sharing contracts (PSCs) and other agreements, such as Dispute Settlement Agreements and Escrow Agreements, in an effort to increase the nation’s crude production and attract investments in the Deepwater sector. These agreements would yield approximately 10 billion barrels of crude and over $500 billion in revenue.

Read Also: Who wants Mele Kyari dead?

Kyari has also skillfully handled the adoption of the Alternative Funding Approach (AFA), which has replaced the previous cash call payment system, to settle Nigeria’s Joint Cash Call arrears to the IOCs to the tune of $5 billion. With an eye towards beyond Nigeria’s borders, the NNPCL has inked Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with nations such as Ghana, Gambia, Guinea, and Guinea Bissau. These agreements are a part of the 5,600-kilometer Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline project, which also crosses seven other nations: Togo, Benin, Liberia, Cote d’Ivoire, Sudan, and Senegal.

After the project is finished, Nigeria will supply Morocco and eventually Europe with roughly 3 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day (3bscf/d).

The NNPCL obtained a $1.4 billion external project finance agreement for Niger Delta hydrocarbon projects in the same year 2022. In addition, the Kyari-led NNPCL purchased OVH Energy Marketing (OVHEM), the owner and operator of Oando downstream assets, as part of its resolve to keep up its dominant position in the upstream industry.

These successes of the NNPCL over the past two years undoubtedly do not point to a feeble and careless leadership at the top of the organisation. Rather, they highlight Kyari’s smart, purposeful, and nuanced leadership. He had been clear from the start that he intended to take the NNPC in a different path. He had revealed his TAPE motive in order to do this. Transparency, Accountability, and Performance Excellence — “TAPE” for short — has been the cornerstone of his leadership at the NNPC and has highlighted the accomplishments he has made in a short period of time.

Tinubu’s leadership and Gbajabiamila’s passion for negotiation

    • By, Kachala Mustapha

Globally, the relationship is now symbiosis, which requires mutual respect from both employers and employees.

This is what Gbajabiamila was playing out, I must commend him for his significant contributions and important roles so that in the end it will be a win-win thing between the labour union and the government.

Gbajabiamila was outstanding in the pursuit of a peaceful resolution of the Labour Union over the impact of fuel subsidy removal.

Kudos to him, in getting a nation to be proud of, it is important other stakeholders imbibe this spirit of patriotism to reposition our institutions.

Recall in 2022 Femi Gbajabiamila played a pivotal role in helping to resolve ASUU vs FG saga…… Attending Meetings upon Meetings between ASUU representatives and the Federal Government.

He has shown over time that his intervention in the most prominent, educated and humane approach is a testimony of his capacity, sagacity and dedication to serving his country. He’s the HERO here.

We all must rally around to commend those who are very proactive in trying to make sure that the true process of social dialogue to resolve the challenges is put in place.

At the same time, those who cautioned people who think employment relationship is still old ways of master-servant relationship must recognize that globally, the relationship is now symbiosis, that requires mutual respect from both the employers and the employees.

What else can adequately describe the Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila’s compassionate character than a beautiful mediator and a reliable negotiator who thrives in making his principal prosper?

The fisher of talent, President Bola Tinubu, had discovered how talented he was when he nominated him as the speaker of the House of Representatives in 2015.

The talent discovered by Asiwaju led to his persistence in nominating him again in 2019.

Alas, he became the speaker and he stood tall, he was distinguished in his role.

He became a speaker that solves problems.

A speaker with foresight is now a Chief of Staff reliably executing all of his boss’ duties.

Who else knows Gbajabiamila was the instrument behind the resolution of the Dubai visa ban on Nigerians? ….. Time without numbers, nights without sleep, he was up and doing towards its peaceful resolution that sees Nigerians on a peaceful sojourn to the Arab Nation after years of embargo.

Same Gbaja was instrumental during Asiwaju’s participation at the United Nations General Assembly meeting.

In the wee hour of the 2023 general elections, in his quest to make the election more inclusive, he sponsored a bill towards making a direct primary the sole decider of the party’s candidate, this feat shows how passionate he is about making people’s voices heard.

While Nigerians were being tortured by Godwin Emefiele with his evil policy that almost put the nation on fire, he was there clamouring for the masses who were at the detriment of the policy.

He also dialogues with fuel marketers towards making fuel available for the masses to bridge scarcity which always aids the hike in transport fees.

These and many money can’t be forgotten amongst the human-centred interventions that can’t be forgotten in our hearts.

Asiwaju the father of our Democracy should be commended for discovering such huge talent, not to forget his role in bringing out the talent in Gbaja which in turn had seen a greater contribution towards the greater future of our nation.

  • The role of innovation in economic diversification: A case for Akwa Ibom by Iniubong Emmanuel

The role of innovation in economic diversification: A case for Akwa Ibom by Iniubong Emmanuel

The government of Akwa Ibom state has been urged to leverage innovation to drive its economy and realise its significant potential.

In examining the potential of utilizing innovation for economic diversification under the leadership of Governor Umo Eno, a public affairs analyst and final year student of International Law and Diplomacy at Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, Nigeria, Iniubong Emmanuel Sam CFE, highlighted that innovation has the capacity to foster the emergence of new industries, consequently generating employment opportunities and stimulating economic growth.

Innovation is the process of developing new products, services, or processes. It is essential for economic diversification, which is the process of developing new economic sectors and industries to reduce reliance on a single sector or industry.

Innovation can drive economic diversification in a number of ways. First, it can lead to the development of new products and services that can be exported to other countries, generating new sources of revenue for the economy. Second, innovation can lead to the development of new industries that can create jobs and boost economic growth. Third, innovation can lead to improvements in productivity and efficiency in existing industries, making them more competitive in the global market.

Akwa Ibom State is heavily reliant on the oil and gas sector for its revenue. This overreliance on a single sector makes the state’s economy vulnerable to fluctuations in oil prices and global economic shocks. To achieve sustainable development, Akwa Ibom State needs to diversify its economy.

Innovation can play a key role in driving economic diversification in Akwa Ibom State. The state has a number of strengths that can support innovation, such as:

A young and growing population – Akwa Ibom State has a young and growing population, which provides a large pool of potential entrepreneurs and innovators.

Government support for innovation – The Akwa Ibom State government is committed to promoting innovation. The government has established a number of initiatives to support innovation, such as the Akwa Ibom Innovation Hub.

However, there are also a number of challenges to promoting innovation in Akwa Ibom State. These challenges include:

Lack of investment in education and research – Akwa Ibom State needs to invest more in education and research to develop a skilled workforce and promote innovation.

Lack of a supportive business environment – Akwa Ibom State needs to improve its business environment to make it easier for businesses to start and grow.

Need for a culture of innovation – Akwa Ibom State needs to create a culture of innovation that encourages people to be creative and to think outside the box.

Despite the challenges, there are a number of opportunities to promote innovation in Akwa Ibom State. The state government can play a key role in promoting innovation by:

Investing in education and research – The state government can increase investment in public education and research institutions, and it can also provide scholarships and other financial assistance to students and researchers.

Creating a supportive business environment – The state government can reduce bureaucracy, improve infrastructure, and provide tax breaks and other incentives to businesses. The government can also work with the private sector to create incubators and accelerators to support startups.

Promoting a culture of innovation – The state government can sponsor innovation competitions and awards, and it can promote innovation in the media. The private sector can also play a role in promoting innovation in Akwa Ibom State by investing in research and development, and by developing new products and services.

By working together, the government and the private sector can help Akwa Ibom State to achieve sustainable development through economic diversification driven by innovation.

Here are some specific examples of how innovation can be used to drive economic diversification in Akwa Ibom State:

Developing new agricultural products and processes: For example, researchers could develop new crop varieties that are more resistant to pests and diseases, or they could develop new ways to process agricultural products into value-added products.

Developing new tourism products and experiences: For example, entrepreneurs could develop new eco-tourism tours or create new cultural attractions.

Developing new industries, such as manufacturing and technology: For example, entrepreneurs could start businesses to manufacture new products or to develop new software applications.

Establish partnerships between academia and industry: Partnerships between academia and industry can help to ensure that research is aligned with the needs of businesses and that research results are commercialized.

Encourage collaboration between researchers and entrepreneurs: Collaboration between researchers and entrepreneurs can help to accelerate the development of new products and services.

Provide support for startups and early-stage businesses: Startups and early-stage businesses are often the source of innovative new ideas. The government and the private sector can provide support to startups and early-stage businesses in the form of funding, mentoring, and access to resources.

Promote open innovation: Open innovation is a collaborative approach to innovation that involves sharing ideas and resources with partners outside the organization. The government and the private sector can promote open innovation by creating platforms and initiatives that facilitate collaboration between different stakeholders.

By investing in innovation, Akwa Ibom State can create a more diversified and sustainable economy.

It is also important to note that innovation is not just about developing new technologies. It can also involve developing new business models, new marketing strategies, and new ways of organizing work. By encouraging people to think creatively and to challenge the status quo, Akwa Ibom State can foster a culture of innovation that will drive economic diversification and sustainable development.

Dafinone commiserates with victims of Ugbenu tanker fire

Senator Ede Dafinone (Delta North) has expressed deep condolences to the victims of the recent petroleum tanker fire incident at Ugbenu, Ethiope West Local Government Area.

He called on the federal government to take immediate action in fixing the bad sections of the Benin-Warri road.

The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday along the Warri – Benin Road at Ugbenu Koko Junction, claiming five lives, according to the police report, with properties worth millions of lost in the avoidable incident.

The Delta Central lawmaker while reiterating the call for the federal government to expedite action on fixing failed portions of major highways in Delta State, noted that the incident would have been avoided if not for the bad spot on the road which caused the tanker loaded with PMS to fall and spill its contents.

He decried the untold hardship commuters face on the Warri-Benin road daily, spending close to five hours on the road on a journey that shouldn’t last for a about an hour due to the deplorable state of the road.

He noted that man hours lost daily to traffic on Warri-Benin road because of the bad state of the road, the only major road connecting the two states of the Niger Delta region is taking a huge toll on economic activities and the social life of our people who daily journey through that route.

According to reports, a tanker laden with PMS fell at the Ugbenu Koko Junction, spilling its contents into a nearby swamp. The spillage attracted a group of youths who began scooping the fuel into jerry cans and other containers.

Tragically, an explosion occurred, engulfing the area in flames. The resulting fire consumed the fallen tanker and caused extensive damage to numerous vehicles including buses, trailers, motorcycles, and private cars.

“The Ugbenu fire incident is a devastating tragedy that has claimed the lives of five individuals and caused significant damage to properties, this is very unfortunate.

“My heart goes out to the families who lost their loved ones and to all those affected by this unfortunate event. We must come together as a community to provide support and assistance to those who have suffered such immense loss.”

“The loss of lives and destruction of properties in this incident are deeply distressing. We must prioritize the safety and well-being of our citizens by ensuring that our roads are in a good state,” Senator Dafinone emphasized.

“I call on the federal government and other relevant agencies to expedite action in addressing the issue of bad roads, particularly the Warri – Benin Road, to prevent future tragedies like this from occurring.

“The poor state of Warri-Benin road needs an emergency attention, our people have been subjected to untold hardship since the only access road connecting the Niger Delta got terriblely bad.

“A journey that takes about an hour from Warri to Benin, now take an average of 4 to 5 hours or more, this has affected enconmic activities on this corridor and if urgent steps are not taken to fix this road, the entire Niger Delta would be cut off from other parts of the country.

“As your representative at the National Assembly, we will continue to bring the attention of the Government to the urgent need for road infrastructure improvements and the allocation of resources to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“I will continue to engage with relevant authorities and advocate for the necessary measures to be taken to ensure the safety of our citizens on the roads,” Senator Dafinone affirmed.

“We owe it to the memory of the victims of the Ugbenu fire incident and to the community at large to make our roads safer and more reliable.”

Dafinone encouraged members of the public to remain vigilant and adhere to safety precautions, particularly when encountering accidents or incidents involving hazardous materials, and also avoid the temptation of scooping fuel.

He urges individuals to report any road hazards promptly and to support the ongoing efforts to improve road infrastructure for the benefit of all.

The unwholesome practice of celebration of mediocrity, placing charlatans and clowns in positions of national relevance and importance has filtered away humongous national resources in terms of sociopolitical economic attainments and development; pathetically this is a festering wound and pyrexia that we must all find the right elixir to cure, before it would extinct public trust and public bureaucracy which is the engine room for public administration and government.

Applying and employing primordial sentiments other than verifiable merit and character in the appointment of officers and individuals into sensitive and prime offices have been taken too far and brought the nation to its kneels comatose, most often than not these mediocre lacking the pre-requisite merit and character gained entry into exalted places of public trust only to: pilfer, plunder, loot and destroy institutions which result in poverty, misery and anguish; example of these national embarrassments glaringly abound, and if in doubt the national graft agencies dossier on the MDA’s will convince you.

Dr. Oluwatoyin Sakirat Madein was appointed meritoriously as a substantive Accountant General of the Federation following a due-diligence selection process which ultimately culminated in her effective appointment as the first female Accountant General of the Federation 18th May, 2023, signed and sealed by President Muhammadu Buhari. The new AGF, is a stern, affirmative, result oriented and quintessential public servant,, she insisted on assumption of office that “operations in the OAGF must conform with the extant laws and resolutions that henceforth treasury house will be in the news for good”. She articulated and amplified her blueprint which she has begun earnestly to actualize in: training, staff welfare, capacity building automation and digitalisation of treasury activities, The Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) and Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS), efficiency, probity and accountability.

The new Accountant General of the Federation is instituting reforms that are quite pervasive giving zero tolerance to corruption and infractions in all ramifications hence is no longer “business as usual”, which doesn’t give undue advantages to the hawks, who now begin to throw darts and spanners at the works by mudslinging and crying wolf to distract this woman of distinction from delivering on this important statutory mandate of the OAGF.Furthermore, in this clime its unimaginable for cabals, highly connected and power brokers and their beneficiaries in the public service to settle to the reality of a woman at the helm of national treasury in Nigeria and moreso one that knows her onion. To be candid, some of the disgruntled Directors parted with large chucks of money and pledges, lobbying to be appointed the substantive Accountant General of the Federation which fell flat in futility following the appointment of Toyin Madein.

In the Directors unwarranted vituperations and petitions to the Attorney General, Head of the Civil Service, National Security Adviser, Minister of Finance, they alleged age falsification, bribe (bribery) her way to be appointed Accountant General, that she was not the best in the qualifying examinations council, came behind Olakunle Oladipupo, the DFA, Federal Ministry of Works, she was further alleged of receiving cash gratification before posting Accountants to the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (her statutory function).

These allegations lack substance, and nothing but a figment of the imagination of skeptics, cynics and traducers who are repulsive to ongoing reforms and change that the new dispensation of Oluwatoyin Madein has inaugurated.

Verifiably, her appointment went exhaustively through the public service extant laws due process which was so rigorous, with screening from intelligence units and anti-graft agencies apart from the aptitude tests and interviews, what stood her out to an advantage was her antecedents of integrity, resourcefulness, transparency and untainted public service records. Many of the ranting Directors, anonymous contenders, and hirelings see the office of the Accountant General of the Federation as a “fat Cow which must be milked at all cost”, they don’t want a paradigm shift towards the government of the day “Renewed Hope”, Who is afraid of the new Accountant General of the Federation Dr. Oluwatoyin Sakirat Madein? she is in the saddle to sanitise and deliver, cleaning the augean stable in the sustainability of the mission and vision of the new dispensation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Why Nigerian youths must cater for aged parents – Cleric

The Superintendent of Christ Army Church, City of David Cathedral, Ikot Ebidang in Onna local government Area of Akwa Ibom state, Venerable David Udonsek, has called on Nigerian youths to take care of their parents at old age.

The cleric made the call during the 3rd national conference of the church on Sunday while delivering a sermon on the topic “Parents Are Gates And Doors Of Life.”

The man of God admonished Nigerian youths not to abandon their parents at old age as such attitude reflects negatively on the larger society and on such children.

He said: “A man’s Door is shut immediately he or she abandones his parents irrespective of his level of finances and other possessions if there’s any.”

He urged children to carter for their parents because it is their responsibility to do that just as the parents took care of them from infancy into adulthood.

He added: “Parents are gate through which everyone passed through into this world, during labour if a woman decide to close her legs a child will not come out, and untill mother’s body is open babies don’t find their way out into the world, either through Womanhood or Cersersan Section (CS).

“To castigate your parents as witches and wizards constitutes blockage of one’s destiny, a secret we have neglected, our parents needs our care just as they cartered for us during our childhood, we should live for our parents to avoid walking in dark on the day light”, he warned, adding that these are the most problems faced today by christian families.

Speaking further, he said: “Society today should not abandon their parents or any elderly person for all of us have in one way or the other received one or two blessings from an elder during our childhood.

“Our society have been infiltrated with the spirit of pride, self-centeredness, egoism that always make us feel that, another person is our own problem, blaming our inability to succeed in life to the old people in the village when in reality we are the reason for our failures”, adding that Jesus Christ never said that there will be trouble free life on earth.

Quoting from the Bible book of Hebrews 12:14-15, Dr Udonsek maintained that seeing our parents as our problems is the beginning of more problem in our ways.

“If our parents are witches and wizard as some of us claim, they would have killed us during labour and delivery. They refused to eat so we could eat, they wore one set of clothes just for us to make it in life, they did all sort of things just to see us grow well. So, it will be a curse to any child that abandons his or her parents.”

He asked God for His mercies over many who may have fallen victim of this as people from every walks of life filed out seeking for God’s intervention over their mistakes and ignorance.

“We Pray the good Lord who makes it possible for us to  succeed in this annual Convention, make you also to succeed in all your endeavors, we pray those who received healings in one way or the other God in heaven should perfect and make the healings permanent, those who have received Christ in their lives through this conference God in heaven continue to be with them now and always and we also pray that God in heaven should take you back to your different destination”, he summarised.

He prayed blessings for dignitaries that came from far and near to grace the annual conference despite their busy schedule which has made history in the south south state.

Udonsek assured that the next edition of the national conference will be more blessed than this year.

“We the entire members of Christ Army Church (GBC) with gladsome heart express gratitude to all members, friends, families, colleagues, and members in other denominations who find out time out of their busy schedule to attend the conference which makes it the best of its kind that ever happened in South South States, God should blessed you all.
