Amended traditional rulers council law: The dignity of the traditional institution and needless rancour

    • By Revd. Richard Peters.

There appears to be a deliberate misrepresentation of the amended Traditional Rulers Council, TRC law by the 8th Assembly.
The dangerous development, if not condemned is susceptible to degenerating into distrust and stoking ethnic fire among the peaceful brothers and sisters in Akwa Ibom State.
To avert such unnecessary conflict, it is pertinent that the facts be laid bare before the public. We feel obligated to join in such responsibility of enlightening the people based on the facts emanating from the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.
A bill seeking to amend the Traditional Rulers law CAP 155 Laws of Akwa Ibom State, 2022 (as amended) was presented, deliberated and subsequently referred to the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs for scrutiny and revert to the House.
Our findings also reveal that every aspect of the bill was considered and a public hearing was held were all relevant stakeholders from across the 31 local government areas including representatives of the paramount rulers, Oku Ibom Ibibio, Atha Oro, Itai Afe Annang, sociopolitical groups, trade unions, civil society groups among others.
Contributions and inputs from all the stakeholders were solicited and obtained through memoranda to the committee which added to the final position of the proposed amendment.
The amendment was primarily targeted at making traditional rulers in Akwa Ibom State to attain such credibility and integrity of other dignified traditional rulers in other parts of the country. In the end, after the different stakeholders made their position known, everyone accepted to the eventual amendment.
We, the ARISE Ambassadors are wholly in support of the amended TRC law because we know that is a good way to take the traditional rulers in Akwa Ibom State to play in the “big league” of traditional institution in Nigeria.

We are aware that the role of the traditional institution in Nigeria is crucial to the development and progress of the diverse ethnic nationalities in the country, as well as their strong influence in some political issues in the land even in their advisory capacity.
The traditional institution is highly revered, confers prominence on the various ethnic groups and goes a long way in influencing government policies in their areas of jurisdiction. Indeed, the traditional institution grades ethnic groups.
This accounts for why the words of the Ooni of Ife, Oba of Lagos, Oba of Benin, Olu of Warri and others are laws. The ethnic groups that own these first class traditional rulers are able to achieve this status for their kings because of the modus operandis of the tribes including ascension to the throne and duration of their reigns. A common denominator among them is that the kings reign for life, part of which the amended TRC law has taken care of.
That is why we strongly pitch our tent on the collective decision by the 31 paramount rulers in Akwa Ibom State, apart from those who sick, and other stakeholders that in order for Akwa Ibom State to play a role in the national traditional rulers council, there was a need to elevate the traditional rulers council in the State to be known as Supreme Traditional Rulers Council headed by the President-General. This is highly commendable. It shows a traditional institution that is concerned about projecting the image of Akwa Ibom State in the comity of traditional rulers in Nigeria with attendant benefits.
By sharing the offices of the President-General, Vice President-General I and Vice President-General II among the Oku Ibom Ibibio, Nkuku Annang and the Ahta Oro shows that our traditional fathers are sensitive to the components of the State, and want to continue to live in love and unity.
Good enough, the well-thought out proposal by the traditional fathers has been backed by the law through the bill that was sent to the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly of which a public hearing on the bill was held, culminating to the signing of the bill into law by the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno.
Thus, it becomes curious to witness sponsored protests in a section of the media and even physically. This is embarrassing show of shame and pettiness by the faceless sponsors of the unsuccessful protest.
ARISE Ambassadors wish to remind everyone that Akwa Ibom State belongs to all the tribes of the State. There is no need to snuggle ethnic undertone to an ordinary good-intentioned action of the legislature. The perpetrators should know that the bond of brotherhood in the State is so strong to be broken by the selfish plots of people who were thoroughly rejected by Akwa Ibom people at the polls, whipping misplaced ethnic sentiments and non-existent division among brothers with the unrealistic aim of embarrassing the State Government. Good enough, Akwa Ibom people know that leopards do not change their spots.
Their actions also give them out as clannish Mayors. At a time that everyone is speaking Akwa Ibom, the tribalists are expecting members of the State House of Assembly to put tribal interests above the interest and good of the State, not knowing that whenever people take oath of office, their allegiance is the State and not to any other sub-unit. This also shows how low they are, and how banal they can go.
We are highly impressed by the exemplary disposition and mentality of the President-General of the Supreme Traditional Rulers Council and Oku Ibom Ibibio, Ntenyin Solomon Etuk for his contra-myopic leadership style and patriotic actions in all his stations of life. We are confident that the new office will not be an exception.
The first class monarch sees himself first and foremost as an Akwa Ibomite and not an Ibibio, Oro or Annang. That is what patriotic leadership entails and Ntenyin is not found wanting.
We condemn in totality, the sponsored protests by those who are out of circulation like unrecommended school books, and advise them not to take the peace and unity enjoyed in Akwa Ibom State for granted.
ARISE Ambassadors are pro-Akwa Ibom, and want the people magnify the State and not the ethnic divides.
We urge all to see the idea of having a President-General for the Supreme Traditional Rulers Council as a bold attempt to compete favourably with other ethnic groups in Nigeria in the traditional institution.
Akwa Ibom State has excelled in different fields under different administration. We thank Governor Umo Eno for bringing reputation to our traditional rulers through this new law, and urge all not to jeopardize the good intentions of the Governor just for their selfish and clannish interests.
This is not a time to distract Governor Umo Eno through whatever masked guise. Akwa Ibom State belongs to everyone but not everyone can be governor at the same time.
Let us not derail from that path of love, unity and oneness chatted for us by the founding fathers. We are one!
Let us support the new Traditional Rulers law of Akwa Ibom State and stop the blackmail and campaign of calumny. Not even during this season of our 36th State creation anniversary!
    Let love lead!.

Uyo Senate retreat: Another plus to the Udom Emmanuel’s legacy

    By Otobong Nsekpong

The scheduled retreat in Akwa Ibom State, by the Nigerian Senate has confirmed that indeed the State is a destination of choice. Beyond the hospitable and friendly nature of the people, it is the peace and aura of tranquility that became  synonymous with the State since 2015. When the immediate past Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr Udom Emmanuel decided to invest in massive infrastructural development, very few understood the import of his actions. He had the third point of his initial Five Point agenda,  as infrastructural consolidation and expansion and relied on the popular quote, ‘let’s build and they will come’.

Yes, they have come as envisaged and Akwa Ibom people are witnessing the stimulation of economic activities. The Ibom Air, Africa’s first airline established by a sub national, and arguably one of the most efficient airlines on the continent, is among the aviation miracles of the Udom era in Akwa Ibom State. Most importantly, the Four Point by Sheraton Hotel, which the silent achiever picked from a carcass into a 21st century hospitality resort has made Akwa Ibom number one destination of choice.

Ibom Air, the orange magic in the sky, has won several laurels as the most reliable airline in the country, provides travelers with a refreshing experience that makes them look forward to traveling with it again.

The visiting Senators may perhaps have a lot of reasons to consider rewarding the Akwa Ibom Government, especially for massive federal roads executed. For example, during the immediate past administration of Mr Udom Emmanuel, the longest stretches of dualised roads were executed by the State government under Mr Emmanuel between 2015 and 2023. While in the State,  the senators would be very pleased to visit all parts of the state and see how the entire local government areas are knitted by super highways of dual roads. They include the 9.5km RingRoad  of 10lanes, the dual carriage 25km Uyo – Ikot Ekpene Road, the dual carriage road from Uyo to Etinan and from Etinan to Eket, measuring 53kilometers, and yet another dual carriage road of 29km with two cable bridges from Etinan to Ndon Eyo in Onna local government area or even the 19km dual expressway from Eket to Ibeno, where 40 percent of the oil and gas reserves of the country are produced.

The Uyo – Ikot Ekpene Road was executed by construction giants, Julius Berger and provides a smooth sail from the State capital to the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, Ikot Ekpene. A journey that used to take up to an hour, now lasts barely 10-15 minutes. Similarly, the four star hotel which had been a subject of debacle for years, after it remained a mere uncompleted building in Ikot Ekpene, was brought into life after the immediate past administration committed energy into completing and furnishing it, as well as securing legal backing for its takeoff.

It does appear that from the Aviation  sector development to infrastructural consolidation and expansion, Udom was right in powering the State into a choice destination.

Welcome our distinguished Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the fastest developing State of the Federation.

  • FLORENCE ITA-GIWA: A POINT OF CORRECTION, PLEASE…. THIS IS WHO I AM

FLORENCE ITA-GIWA: A POINT OF CORRECTION, PLEASE…. THIS IS WHO I AM

As a public figure of several decades standing, my antecedents are widely known. Nevertheless, it has become necessary to restate who I am and correct some misleading information made about my person.

My name is Florence Mayen Ita-Giwa (Asibong Ita, was also my maiden native Efik name). I was born on the 19th of February 1946. Although I do not have a birth certificate, I have an age declaration document sworn to by my late mother, which I have used all my life. My mother almost died of post-partum haemorrhage during my birth at the hospital; a situation which was made worse as the hospital did not have a blood bank. The story of the circumstances of my birth stuck in my memory, and because of it, I donated a blood bank to the hospital, much later in life.

My late father, Obong Ofiong Umoh Ita Ofiong, was a traditional Ruler in Atabong, Bakassi. He attended Methodist Boys’ High School, Oron (founded in 1905) back in the early 20th century. His parents’ choice to send him to school in Oron was influenced by the fact that Archibong Town, and then James Town, both in Bakassi, were the first ports of call of the Methodist Church Mission in Nigeria in 1893. And, when the Mission set up its first school in these parts, it was natural that my late father would be educated there.

My mother, the late Chief (Mrs.) Beatrice Bassey Ita, was at first a school teacher before venturing into journalism and becoming a renowned pioneering female journalist in South East of Nigeria. Her parents were from the Ekpo Abasi Royal House of Calabar, and their family house was No. 19 Boco Street at Bayside of Calabar South Local Government Area in Cross River State, where I grew up right from infancy until we moved to No. 55 Beecroft Street, also at Bayside in Calabar South. I vividly recall how my mom used to entertain family and friends with tea in the afternoons; a veritable vestige of Calabar’s affinity with the culture of the British colonialists.

I started my education as a girl-child at the renowned Duke Town Primary School, Calabar (with a history dating back to 1846) before attending The Edgerly Memorial Girls’ School, also in Calabar. I took up Nursing as a profession and went for training in it at Aba in the present-day Abia State, although my dear mother had wished that I went into journalism like her. If there is anything like re-incarnation, I will still choose to belong to the noble profession of Nursing.

My late mother was an avowed Zikist, who worked as a correspondent for the Zik Group of Newspapers in Calabar. She eventually sought transfer to Aba in order to remain close and keep watch over me while I was undergoing my studies. The Nigerian Civil War broke out while we were in Aba, and my mother and family chose to remain in the “Biafran” territory for the entire duration of the war until it ended in January 1970. I never set eyes on any federal troop or officer until when the war ended while we were at Ahiara, where we had fled to, having lost everything we owned in life. That is the closest exposure I had to fighting that raged during the Civil War. A Nigerian military officer rescued us alongside other relatives and graciously arranged for our safe passage to Calabar.

Sometime after we arrived in Calabar, I recall that my mother was briefly detained by the Federal authorities as was the late Margaret Ekpo. My mother was eventually employed by the Sketch Newspaper as the South Eastern State correspondent at the time, and Aremo Segun Osoba, who was its Managing Director. The photograph of myself, Ndidi Okereke Onyuike, the former Director General of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, and the late Cecilia Ekpenyong, the former Deputy Governor of Cross River State, which appeared in a book written by Brigadier General Alabi Isama was taken at a party in Port Harcourt sometime in the middle of 1970, long after the Civil War had ended.

I proceeded to the Kilburn Polytechnic London to train as a Medical Secretary. At the end of my studies, after my field work experience at the cancer follow-up department and periodontal department of the University College Hospital, Gower Street, London, on the strict insistence of my mother, I returned to Nigeria and was immediately employed by Beecham Laboratories as a Medical Representative.

After receiving some training in Pharmaceutical Detailing, I was then posted to be in charge of the company’s northern Nigeria operations. After doing a good job at Beecham, I got head-hunted by Sandoz Pharmaceuticals and was appointed the Medical Representative in charge of Lagos State. I thereafter left paid employment to found Flobett Pharmacy and Med-Equip Limited, with branches at No. 1 Norman Williams Street, Ikoyi, and No. 1 Kofo Abayomi Street, Apapa – both in Lagos. Med-Equip Limited was an accredited agent of AJ Seward Medical Equipment UK and won a contract to fully equip seven 30-bed military hospitals (MRS) in different parts of Nigeria, including Zuru (in present-day Kebbi State), Owode in Ogun State and Ibawa in Akwa Ibom State. To this day, I am still able to conceptualize and set up a hospital from the reception to the morbid section.

I joined politics, contested elections and won four very difficult contests starting from 1991, each time on “opposition party” platforms. I voluntarily opted out of seeking elective office to allow space for the next generation to express themselves in Nigerian politics, after my outing as Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2003. As a lawmaker, I attended a course on Legislative Management at the Thames Valley University, London. I am currently working on a book on “Legislative Management and Parliamentary Lobbying” with the objective of sharing knowledge with the next generation of politicians, public office holders and the general public.

Apart from my daughter, I have 15 other lovely children that I brought out from the creeks of Bakassi and single-handedly weaned, nurtured and groomed into responsible and promising persons; to the glory of God Almighty. The youngest of them is now nine years old. She was rescued from the creeks of Bakassi at just four months old. Today, she attends one of the best private schools in Calabar. I also have a pair of 14-year-old twin boys whose parents were killed right in their presence at the age of four. They both attend what is considered one of the best high schools in Calabar, Access School. Most of my other children have graduated from the best private universities in Nigeria and Ghana as Petroleum Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Computer Engineers and so on. In my family there are no titles or divisions, because I believe that a child is a child, no matter how he or she came into this world. All these children are mine, given to me by God and I am committed to training them into good and worthy citizens of Nigeria, complete with strong family values, love, respect and compassion for their fellow human beings.

It is common knowledge that a typical Calabar lady’s physiological issue cannot be “aesthetic augmentation”, but “reduction”. Besides, aesthetic procedures are not normally done under general anesthesia. So, a third-party or next-of-kin is not usually needed, unless there are underlying conditions which may be considered threats to the procedure, thereby warranting the assurance of a relative as surety. It is a fact that, 18 years ago I underwent liposuction (fat reduction) around my hips; a feature I obviously inherited from my late mother. This was public knowledge, as I had informed the media. I do not do things and hide in the shadows, or I am ashamed of. Nobody leaked any secret, as that procedure was public knowledge. I have consistently counselled younger women not to be scared of ageing, as it is an inevitable phase of life, but rather they should embrace the prospect of ageing gracefully and beautifully in good health, by embracing a healthy lifestyle and seeking any wholesome and safe medical intervention needed.

On a final note, I have always advised career women and female politicians to stay strong and courageous, and not to ever cave into the threats or bullying or blackmail of chauvinists and other predators, irrespective of their gender.

This is who I am. It is well. God bless you all.

Senator (Princess) Dame Dr. Florence Ita-Giwa, OON, KSW

  • Governor Otu hosts ex-Nigerian athlete Etim Patrick after years of neglect

Governor Otu hosts ex-Nigerian athlete Etim Patrick after years of neglect

Governor Bassey Otu of Cross Rivers State on Tuesday, September 12, hosted a former Nigerian athlete, Etim Patrick ‘Ironbar’ Bassey, at the Government House as he promised to initiate comprehensive rehabilitation plans for the sportsman.

It was gathered that Ironbar, who represented Nigeria in the men’s super-heavyweight weightlifting event at the 1984 Summer Olympics Games in Los Angeles, USA, could not achieve his aim of becoming a Gold medalist due to injury.

Commending Governor Otu on his decision to rehabilitate Etim, a public affairs analyst, Deyemi Saka, said that Ironbar was brought to his consciousness some months ago through a viral video.

Saka said: “This is not a case of rehabilitation of a man who has squandered his goodwill and fortune, it is an account of a man unlucky, and neglected by those who ought to acknowledge his contributions to society and adequately compensate him. It is a clear departure from most stories we read about our athletes or sports personalities who surely mismanaged their fortunes.

“Etim Patrick ‘Ironbar’ Bassey, while representing Nigeria in the men’s super-heavyweight weightlifting event at the 1984 Summer Olympics Games in Los Angeles, USA, his only desire was to clinch a gold medal. He was a very rare hope for Nigeria to clinch his first-ever gold medal at the Olympics till disaster struck. Stating Bassey was a gold medal hopeful is not out of place as he had has won a Commonwealth Games bronze medal in weightlifting, won back-to-back gold medals at two National Sports festivals, participated in the African Weightlifting Championships in Port Saeed, Egypt in 1981 and won three Gold Medals, so expecting a medal especially a good medal was in line with his progression.

“Records have it that while competing at the Olympics representing Nigeria, Bassey felt a pain in one of his legs, and a medical examination showed thereafter that he had a thorn muscle, something that effectively ended his Olympic sojourn. This means all his dreams were aborted at 29 as the injury also meant that the scholarship at the University of Southern California to play American football, was gone with the wind.

“Typical of successive administrators of Sport in Nigeria over the years, he was abandoned after he sustained the injury while representing the country, while he ploughed his personal savings of more than $25,000 (twenty-five thousand dollars) into seeking medical help. After a successful surgery in America, he ran out of money and it was the beginning of a sad chapter of his life. After a second surgery, taking several jobs, and a failed marriage; he returned to Nigeria in 2004.

He further stated: “Etim Patrick Bassey was brought to our consciousness some months ago when a video of him engaging in voluntary road rehabilitation work along the Addo-Badore road went viral. He was handed a cash gift of fifty thousand naira by the recorder of the incident who called on Nigerians, the federal government, and the Cross Rivers State Government to assist him (Bassey) by rehabilitating him as we are about humanity.

“It seems the call was lost on Nigerians, and both the Federal Government and Cross Rivers State Government until yesterday(12/09/2023) when Governor Bassey Otu of Cross Rivers State hosted Etim Patrick Bassey and initiated comprehensive rehabilitation plans for him.  For a state and an administration whose mantra is “peoples first”, this is worthy of commendation and congratulations to “Ironbar”. I, and I believe Etim Patrick is eternally grateful to the man who did the recording and identified as @_egungun for bringing this matter to our attention.  Getting back on his feet is surely the greatest “Gold Medal” Etim will ever win.”

  • Bayelsa election: Leave RCCG, Adeboye out of politics, group tells Diri, CoS

Bayelsa election: Leave RCCG, Adeboye out of politics, group tells Diri, CoS

Stakeholders under the auspices of the New Generation Leaders (NGL) have advised Bayelsa state governor, Douye Diri and his Chief of Staff, Peter Akpe, against dragging the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) and its General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, into politics ahead of the November 11 governorship election.

The coordinator of NGL in Yenagoa local government area, Comrade Precious Odede, alleged that Diri and his team had concluded plans to visit Pa Adeboye and solicit his support for the poll.

Odede in a statement said Akpe was to lead Diri to Pa Adeboye and beg him to prevail on the First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu, an RCCG pastor, to support his reelection.

He said: “I have on good authority plans by the Diri government to solicit Pastor Adeboye’s support. We understand Peter Akpe, Chief of Staff to the Governor is trying to broker a meeting between Governor Diri and Pastor Adeboye in Lagos. It is expected that Adeboye will in turn prevail on the First Lady, H.E Senator Remi Tinubu, who is also an RCCG pastor to support Diri on sentimental grounds.”

Read Also: Bayelsa guber: You will be defeated, LP candidate tells Gov Diri

But Odede said the plot would collapse like a pack of cards, recalling how Diri treated Mrs. Tinubu with disdain in 2022 when the First Lady, who was then campaigning for the election of her husband visited Bayelsa to commiserate with victims of the floods in the state.

He claimed that Diri allegedly locked Mrs Tinubu out of the Government House in Yenagoa and refused to accord her the courtesy of receiving her.

Odede said: “Unfortunately, our very dear first lady will not give in to that desperate plot. She remembers too well how Gov Diri locked her out of Creek Haven gates last year.

“It is also important to note that Pastor Adeboye is a father to all and RCCG is a church that isn’t leaning to any political party. We urge the Bayelsa State government to save taxpayers monies, shelve the Lagos trip, and focus on the task of governance.”

Bayelsa Gov, monarchs urge relocation of East West road oversight to Niger Delta Ministry

Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri and traditional rulers of the State represented by the Chairman of the Traditional Rulers Council, His Royal Majesty, King Bubaraye Dakolo have appealed to President Bola Tinubu for the return of East West Road supervision to the Ministry of Niger Delta Development.

They made the call during the working visit of the Minister for Niger Delta Development to Bayelsa State.

The Governor and traditional rulers emphasised their desire to pursue the swift handling and construction of the East West Road, citing its long history of neglect and its critical importance to the region’s development. They also urged the relocation of the ministry from Abuja to the Niger Delta region itself.

His Royal Majesty expressed the frustration of the people, noting that the road had been under construction for an extended period without completion. “Despite being the source of the nation’s wealth, the Niger Delta had been deprived of basic infrastructure like roads”, he said.

He further called on President Tinubu to expedite the transfer of the road’s oversight to the Ministry of Niger Delta Development, emphasizing that the local leaders were tired of exploitation while their people suffered.

The traditional ruler also recounted the devastating flood experienced the previous year, which divided the East West Road into two segments, making it nearly impassable. The people were forced to rely on boats and military trucks in some areas, painting a grim picture of their plight.

His Royal Majesty also addressed the issue of oil theft, pointing out that the majority of Nigerian elites were unaware of its true implications. He clarified that the victims of oil theft were often individuals who, due to economic desperation, resorted to illegal oil activities, which had severe health consequences.

The king emphasized that availability of petroleum products would deter people from patronizing illegal refineries and reduce oil theft, ultimately improving security in the region.

King Bubaraye Dakolo stressed that addressing these pressing issues was essential for the success of the minister’s role in the region. He also urged the ministry and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to explore alternative routes beyond the East West Road to ensure that the region’s people could benefit from their wealth.

The minister said he visited the palace of the Governor and the traditional rulers to brief him about his working visit to Bayelsa, where he aimed to inspect ongoing projects by the NDDC, including the East West Road, and engage with stakeholders to promote peace in the region.

He pointed out the alarming condition of a section of the East West Road leading to Bayelsa, expressing concern about the region’s vast wealth production and the road’s deteriorating state. He assured the traditional ruler that President Bola Tinubu had a deep interest in the region’s development, exemplified by the renaming of the ministry from Niger Delta Affairs to Niger Delta Development.

As a traditional ruler with significant influence, the Minister requested the ruler’s support in advocating for the East West Road’s swift rehabilitation and its transfer to the Ministry of Niger Delta Development for immediate attention. He acknowledged that the Ministry of Works had numerous road projects demanding their attention, making it essential for the road to be under his ministry’s purview.

He informed the rulers about his efforts to secure the support of the governors of Rivers and Bayelsa states in addressing this matter. He stressed the importance of maintaining the current peace for sustainable development and combating oil theft in the region. The minister earnestly sought the ruler’s cooperation and suggested that he use his connections with other traditional rulers to mobilize support for the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

Minister Momoh defies rain to inspect projects in Bayelsa

The Minister for Niger Delta Development Engr. Abubakar Momoh defied heavy rainfall in Rivers and Bayelsa States on Saturday to inspect projects being executed by the ministry.

He said when working with President Bola Tinubu, the demand for results leaves no room for excuses due to rain.

When reporters asked about his decision to embark on the inspection of the ministry’s projects amid heavy rains and his motivations, he stated: “We are working with a president who wants results, and to achieve results, you cannot allow rain or anything else to deter you. Yes, I agree that it started raining when I left Port Harcourt, and it hasn’t stopped raining even here in Bayelsa, but that shouldn’t deter anyone determined to achieve results.

“I have seen the projects here in Odi and Adagbabiri – they are supposed to be beneficial projects for the community – the housing project and oil palm processing plant. However, the unfortunate thing is that when planning these projects, the flooding nature of Bayelsa State was not taken into account. Both of these projects are below water level, rendering them non-functional.”

“For example, when I was told about a sand filling project in Odi, my initial impression was that it was meant to prepare the area for construction. Little did I know that there were already buildings in place. If you decide to sand-fill the area, it would reach the middle of the buildings.

“To make the housing project functional, you’d need to demolish the entire structure and reconstruct it, which means all the money spent there would be wasted because the place is uninhabitable.

“The same issue applies to the oil palm processing plant. If a construction project is below the level of the road, anything done there is futile. Even if you complete and commission such a project, it would serve no purpose other than for the newspapers; it would not function. We couldn’t even inspect the housing and oil processing projects because of the flooding in the project site.”

“I would like to call on the relevant departments involved to consider the flooding nature of the area and other factors when planning projects like these in the future.”

“Since my arrival from Abuja for this working visit, I have seen for myself and have positive news to take back. The inspection of the Onopa canal also took place today, and I am pleased that the natives and traditional ruler confirmed that the project was well-executed. The design I observed convinced me that the work done there was reasonable.”

Regarding his expectations from the NDDC, the minister said, “I expect them to deliver quality projects, focusing on quality rather than quantity. High-quality projects will have a longer lifespan, while substandard ones will collapse within a year or two. I believe the new management will take this message to heart when designing their projects, considering all the factors and issues affecting these two projects – the housing and oil processing projects.”
