You are a nationalist, Middle Belt Youths hail Balami at 41

A Middle Belt youth group, Agenda 2027, has celebrated foremost aviator and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Comrade Isaac Balami, on his 41st birthday.

Balami, who is outside the country, turned 41 on Monday, August 25. Despite his absence, tributes have continued to pour in, highlighting his contributions to Nigeria’s economy and his role as a beacon of hope for many young people.

In a statement signed by its President, Melah Ibrahim, the group praised Balami for attaining remarkable feats at his prime and for maintaining an incorruptible character that, according to them, has remained consistent with all his endeavors.

“At 41, Comrade Isaac Balami has contributed massively to nation building. Nation builders are not only those holding political office but also individuals who create impact in any space they occupy,” the group stated.

Agenda 2027 noted that although Balami chose to mark his birthday in quiet reflection, it would not let the moment pass without recognizing his “exemplary spirit of comradeship.”

“We commend his nationalistic character and sheer determination to unite Nigerian youths, using himself as a bridge across divides. The cult following he enjoys among Nigerian youths today is proof that he has built genuine connections across the country,” the group added.

The statement recalled how the Ibagwa people of Enugu State once conferred one of their highest traditional titles on Balami, despite his northern roots — a gesture they described as evidence of his wide political reach and acceptance.

The group further applauded his creativity and sacrifice in producing the Labour Room reality TV show, where he invested his personal resources to create a platform for young Nigerians to engage in national discourse. They also highlighted his efforts in job creation, particularly in the aviation sector, where he has trained and employed hundreds of young people through his aircraft hangar.

“Many who struggled their way to the top often become selfish, but your story is different. You have lifted more people out of poverty than any young man across the country. That is why Middle Belt youths see you as a source of inspiration,” the statement read.

They also referenced the recent approval of the Isaac Balami University of Aeronautic and Management (IBUAM), which they described as a new fountain of hope for Nigerian youths.

According to Agenda 2027, “The different videos, images, and testimonies from your foundations scattered across Nigeria are proof of what you represent — a true nationalist. No wonder your Nigeria Rebirth Project left such an impact, even though government at the time failed to fully capitalize on it.”

The group, while celebrating him, advised Balami to carefully consider his political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections, stressing that many northern youths are likely to follow his direction.

  • APC stakeholders call for Minister’s sack over alleged anti-party activities

APC stakeholders call for Minister’s sack over alleged anti-party activities

Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress(APC) from 29 out of the 31 local government areas of Akwa Ibom state have called for the sack of the Minister for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo over alleged anti party activities.

Under the aegis of ‘Dedicated Members of the APC’, they expressed worry that Ekpo was alienating founding members of the party and working at cross-purposes with Senate President Godswill Akpabio in his alleged bid to become governor.

In a petition addressed to President Bola Tinubu in Uyo on Monday, the stakeholders called for Ekpo’s replacement with someone more attuned to the ideals of the APC.

Signatories to the petition are: Rt Hon Michael Essien(Ini),Obong Anthony John(Itu), Comrade Victor Okon(Uruan), Pst David Udoh(Ibiono Ibom), Lawrence Edet(Uyo), David Linus(Ibesikpo Asutan), Asua Effiong(Etinan) and Vincent Etuk(Nsit Atai).

Others are Samuel Samuel(Abak), Emmanuel  Chris(Ika), Iniemem Effiong(Ikot Ekpene),Edidiong Okon(Mkpat Enin), Steve Udofia(Ikot Abasi), Raphael Charles(Eastern Obolo), Nse Akpabio(Onna) among others.

The statement reads in part: “We, the dedicated members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State, write to reiterate our call for the sack of Minister of Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo.

“Our previous letter to you on this matter was met with a laughable response from the Minister, which only further exposes his true intentions and actions that are detrimental to the party’s unity and progress in our state.

Read Also: PDP more democratic than APC, says Olawepo-Hashim

“As you are aware, the Minister’s actions since assuming office in 2023 have been nothing short of disastrous for our party in Akwa Ibom State. Rather than working to rally party members to support your second-term bid and strengthen our party’s structures in the state, he has been busy creating factions, sidelining, and ostracizing those who do not support his 2031 gubernatorial ambition.

“This behavior is a clear manifestation of his selfish interests and lack of commitment to the party’s ideals”.

They added: “Rather than working together to advance the cause of our party in Akwa Ibom State, the Minister is busy pursuing his personal interests at the expense of party unity and cohesion.

“In light of these developments, we insist that the Minister is a liability to your administration and a curse to our party in Akwa Ibom State. His actions are unbecoming of a public servant and a leader in our party.

“We urge you to take immediate action to address this situation and restore the integrity of our party.

“Moreover, it is imperative that the next Minister of Petroleum Resources (Gas) for Akwa Ibom State is someone who will foster unity and cohesion between the Senate President and the Governor, rather than someone who will sow seeds of discord between the two top leaders of our party in the state.

“The current Minister’s actions have not only undermined the working relationship between these key leaders but have also created an atmosphere of distrust and division within our party” the release stated.

They maintained that they need a minister who will work collaboratively with the Senate President and the Governor to advance the interests of our party and the people of Akwa Ibom State, rather than pursuing personal agendas that are detrimental to the collective progress of the state and the party.

Alleged resignation: Youths give Ojulari seven-day ultimatum to quit

•Seek appointment of NNPCL’s GCEO from N/Delta region

Youths under the aegis of the Niger Delta Ethnic Nationalities Youth Leaders Forum have given the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mr Bashir Bayo Ojulari, one week to vacate office over his alleged resignation recently.

The youths who gave the ultimatum during a world press conference in Abuja, also urged the Federal Government to appoint the GCEO’s replacement from the Niger Delta region.

The text of the press conference was signed by the Chairman, Niger Delta Ethnic Nationalities Youth Leaders Forum and spokesman, Ijaw Youth Council, Sir Jothan Lokpobiri Snr., and the spokesman of the Forum and President-General, Ogoni Youth Federation, Engr. Dr. Legborsi Yamaabana.

The group threatened that failure to accede to its demands may have consequences for the stability and peace in the Niger Delta.

It said the briefing was necessitated by grave concerns over the recent conduct of Ojulari which allegedly threatened the peace and stability of the Niger Delta region.

Reading the text of the press conference, the Chairman of the Forum, Lokpobiri, claimed that Mr. Ojulari allegedly resigned his position on August 2nd, 2025, as the GCEO of NNPCL following allegations of corruption and gross incompetence.

Lokpobiri said: “Shockingly, despite this resignation, he has refused to vacate the office and continues to parade himself illegally as GCEO.

“His actions are not only unlawful but deeply offensive to the oil-producing Niger Delta region and damaging to the reputation of NNPCL.

“We therefore demand that Ojulari vacates the GCEO’s office within seven days. Nigeria cannot afford a national oil company without credible leadership. Since his resignation, NNPCL has been left with a GCEO, drifting without direction.

“For the sake of equity, justice, and national stability, we insist that the next GCEO must come from the Niger Delta region.

“We have many highly qualified, globally respected engineers and technocrats within and outside the NNPCL who can immediately provide effective leadership.

“Beyond vacating office, Ojulari must also face full prosecution. He stands accused of the following:

“Diverting $21 million of NNPCL funds into the private account of his associate, Mr. Bashir Haske — an allegation that has already led to arrests by the EFCC.

“Deliberately shutting down the fully operational Port Harcourt Refinery on May 24th, 2025, with the intent of selling it at scrap value to his cronies, while diverting crude oil allocations as spot cargoes to his allies and illegally sacking over 400 Nigerian youths, including some from the Niger Delta, thereby rendering them jobless and worsening the unemployment crisis in the region.

“This reckless sabotage crippled a refinery that had successfully resumed operations in December 2024, after a turnaround maintenance that cost $1.5 billion of taxpayers’ money.

“At the time, the refinery was running profitably and providing hundreds of jobs and opportunities

“These actions are unforgivable acts of corruption and economic sabotage against both the Niger Delta and Nigeria as a whole.

“We therefore call on the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to act without delay by appointing a qualified Niger Delta professional as the new GCEO of NNPCL and ensuring that Bashir Bayo Ojulari is fully investigated and prosecuted for financial crimes and economic sabotage.

“Let it be clear: if these demands are not met within seven days, the Niger Delta youths will be compelled to take decisive mass action. “Such action will have far-reaching consequences for the peace and stability of the region. This is not a threat but a warning born out of deep concern.

“The fragile peace we have worked hard to sustain is now at risk, and as leaders, we cannot stand by and watch it collapse. Enough is enough. Ojulari must go. Justice must prevail.”

‎Stakeholders laud NDDC’s human capital development initiatives

‎Speakers and stakeholders have lauded the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for preparing the region’s youths for the future through human capital development initiatives.

‎They harped on the need for the youths to embrace technology, skills acquisition, and innovation as pathways to sustainable development and social transformation.

‎They spoke at the 2025 International Youth Day Celebration held at Boji-Boji Owa, Ika North-East Local Government Area of Delta State.

‎Welcoming participants to the event which was powered by the NDDC, the Commission’s Executive Director of Finance, Mrs. Josephine Ejereye, said the Youth Day celebration was aimed at advancing multilateral cooperation through technology and partnership.

‎She urged the youths to apply lessons from the engagement to impact their world positively, noting that the commission was committed to creating opportunities for young people across the region.

‎United Nations Peace Ambassador and Senior Special Assistant to the Delta State Governor on Talent Development, Amb. Ugagaoghene Ogheneyole, was full praises for the NDDC board led by Chiedu Ebie for bringing vitality to the Commission.

‎He describee the leadership as “a truly interventionist body delivering quality, people-oriented, and immensely important infrastructure across the region.”

‎He called on young people to embrace digital skills as tools for problem-solving and regional growth.

‎Ogheneyole noted that the present era is one of digitalisation, where technology is indispensable for addressing human needs, listing computer literacy, artificial intelligence, data science, coding, audiovisual design, UI/UX, and digital marketing as skills in high demand across industries.

‎He stressed the need for the NDDC to move beyond physical infrastructure to continue to invest in human capital through digital incubation centres, grants, and venture capital for youth-driven innovations.

‎“The Silicon Valley did not grow into an over a trillion-dollar industrial ecosystem because of great ideas alone. Its major driving force was conscious investment in youth ideas through grants, sponsorship deals, and venture capital.

‎”If the NDDC and other stakeholders can intentionally invest in the dreams of young people carrying laptops around with big visions, the Niger Delta will reap the benefits of job creation, improved GDP, and capital market growth,” he said.

‎Pledging his personal commitment to the process, Ogheneyole said he was willing to volunteer to work with the NDDC for free to design a roadmap for youth-driven innovation.

‎“As a youth of Niger Delta, I am pledging to volunteer, to work with the NDDC to develop a realistic initiative to drive this process. Let us become the change we want to see,” he told the gathering.

‎In his presentation titled “Youth as Frontiers of Positive Change in the Niger Delta” the Executive Director of the Centre for Core Values, Leadership and Orientation, Abuja, Eugene Uzum, a lawyer, described Niger Delta youths as critical drivers of sustainable development, explaining that with more than 54 percent of Delta State’s estimated 5.9 million population falling within the youth bracket, the demographic advantage could stimulate massive growth if given the right opportunities.

‎Uzum, a former Director-General of the Delta State Orientation Bureau, identified four pillars for meaningful youth contribution empowerment, innovation, community engagement, and sustainable development.

‎He stressed that empowerment through education, mindset reorientation, and access to financial and technical resources was “primus in the scheme of determinants” for change.

‎Uzum noted that many young people in the region were already leveraging technology, entrepreneurship, and creative solutions to tackle local challenges.

According to him, initiatives in environmental conservation, renewable energy, entrepreneurship, and civic responsibility could reposition the region for growth.

‎“Youth-led initiatives are already driving positive change in the Niger Delta, promoting sustainable development and good governance,” he said.

‎While acknowledging challenges such as insecurity, corruption, and limited resources, Uzum insisted that with proper support, young people could transform the region.

‎He urged youths to take personal responsibility for their progress, admonishing that “going far in life is not determined by where you start from, or even whether you start at all. Life is actually what you put into it. Nobody owes you a living”

‎The event formed part of activities to mark the 2025 International Youth Day Celebration, and featured robust discussions on how to reposition the region’s youths as leaders, innovators, and agents of sustainable development.

  • Plight of Bakassi ‘unholy, unjust’, says C’River Deputy Gov

Plight of Bakassi ‘unholy, unjust’, says C’River Deputy Gov

Cross River State Deputy Governor Peter Odey has described as “unholy and unjust” the plight of the displaced inhabitants of Bakassi Peninsula following its ceding to the Republic of Cameroon and the consequent loss of 76 oil wells.

Odey, who spoke at the inaugural Nigeria International Coastal Border Platform Summit in Uyo, lamented the condition of the residents as an “international, African, and national abandonment.”

Speaking before an audience of coastal state Deputy Governors, maritime experts, security chiefs, lawmakers, and traditional rulers, Odey said: “We talk about international cooperation, yet the people of Bakassi have been left behind—forgotten by both the international community and the Nigerian state,” he declared. “Since the unjust and unholy ceding of the Bakassi Peninsula in 2012, our people have been living as strangers in their own country. It is an affront to justice and humanity.”

The Deputy Governor painted a stark picture of the conditions in Bakassi, lamenting the absence of any meaningful intervention from either national or international bodies.

“That area has been abandoned without a single form of sustained support—no international assistance, no African solidarity, no tangible action from our own national government,” he said, his voice heavy with emotion. “We cannot, in good conscience, continue to hold conferences and issue communiqués while a whole community languishes in despair.”

Odey urged the newly inaugurated platform to go beyond rhetoric and make the Bakassi question a central focus of its agenda.

“I hope and I pray that part of our deliberations here will look into the plight of the impoverished and forgotten people of the Bakassi Peninsula,” he said. “May these deliberations inspire innovative solutions, foster unity, and pave the way for lasting partnerships that protect our oceans, respect our borders, and restore dignity to the displaced.”

The summit, declared open by Akwa Ibom Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, attracted a high-powered delegation, including the Director-General of the National Boundary Commission, Surv. Adamu Adaji; a representative of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral E. I. Ogalla; lawmakers from coastal states; top government functionaries; and community leaders. The event featured technical paper presentations by maritime and border governance experts.

At the close of proceedings, the Chairman of the Platform and Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, presented a 10-point communiqué, co-signed by deputy governors of Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Lagos, Ogun, and Ondo States. The resolutions included harmonizing maritime laws, strengthening community-based intelligence networks, integrating climate resilience into border policy, and dedicating part of maritime tax and oil revenue to coastal security.

While the summit’s resolutions spanned a broad spectrum of maritime governance priorities, Odey’s words hung in the air, a reminder of the human face behind border politics.

“We can protect our waters and secure our borders,” he concluded, “but if we fail to protect the humanity of those who call these borders home, we will have failed in the very mission that brought us here.”

The Nigeria International Coastal Border Platform Summit, though focused on broader maritime and border governance issues, now bears the added weight of Bakassi’s story—one that Rt. Hon. Peter Odey insisted must no longer be told in the past tense.

  • Johnny urges INEC to stand by report on Ward delineation in Warri Federal Constituency

Johnny urges INEC to stand by report on Ward delineation in Warri Federal Constituency

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State, High Chief Michael Johnny, has advised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) led by Professor Mahmood Yakubu, to stand firmly on its report on the concluded fresh ward delineation in Warri Federal Constituency, Delta State.

Johnny, gave the advice on Sunday in Warri, while reacting to comments made by an Itsekiri chief, Ayiri Emami.

Johnny, Agadiwei of Gbaramatu Kingdom, warned that the Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC) cannot be intimidated or blackmailed into tampering with the delineation field work reports already concluded in Warri Federal Constituency.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, National Security Adviser NSA and the Inspector General of Police, will never interfere or compel the Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC) to compromise its integrity and reputation as the Electoral Umpire was determined to stand by its reports on the fresh Ward delineation as presented to the Ijaw, Urhobo and Itsekiri stakeholders..

“ I want to believe that my friend, Ayiri Emami did not acknowledge the existing laws and constitution when he said INEC should have gone back to the Supreme Court, to do what exactly?

“ Commendably, as a law-abiding agency, the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, in full compliance to the Supreme Court judgement swung into action immediately.  The practical field work carried out by INEC was purely on areas, communities and population. And the outcome confirmed that Ijaws were majority in Warri Federal Constituency. Even the Itsekiri cannot dispute this fact”

“Contrary to the false claim by Ayiri Emami that INEC conducted the fresh Ward delineation in Warri Federal Constituency on projected census, there is nothing like “ Projected Census” in the Electoral Act or National Population Commission NPC. The Ayiri Emami’s allegations against INEC over allocation of Wards, was not true and entirely misleading, as INEC has no power to allocate Wards, rather INEC worked with facts and  the reality on ground.”

Read Also: INEC yet to recognise Mark-led ADC exco

According to Johnny: “ Ayiri Emami should know that it is not the fault of INEC that Itsekiri are minority in population. The  Ijaws we are majority because we marry more wives and produce more children”

He explained that the fresh Ward delineation is not in any way an existential challenge to our Itsekiri brothers and neighbours in Warri Federal Constituency as claimed or wrongly insinuated by Ayiri Emami.

“ It is important to state that the Itsekiri have no local government created for them alone. The  Itsekiri shares Warri North Local Government with the Ijaws, the Itsekiri shares Warri South West with the Ijaws and likewise the Itsekiri shares Warri South with the Urhobo and Ijaw, which made up the Warri Federal Constituency. Therefore, in the Warri Federal Constituency, the House of Representatives and House of Assembly seats are not exclusively for only the Itsekiri as Ijaws and Urhobos were also entitled to the elective positions”

*Maybe I should also educate or remind my friend, Ayiri Emami that Federal Constituencies or State Constituencies were not created for ethnicity.

“ It just happened that Burutu, Bomadi and Patani were distinct Ijaw Federal Constituencies and State Constituencies. The Warri Federal Constituency and State House of Assembly seats are for the Ijaws, Urhobos and Itsekiri people in the Warri Federal Constituency. We must embrace the fact and move forward”

“ I urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, NSA, IGP and the leadership of  Independent National Electoral Commission INEC to ignore Ayiri Emami’s outburst and  allegations against the commission and its officials who conducted the Delineation field work”

The ex-chairman of Egbema Gbaramatu Communities Development Foundation insisted that the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC will not go back on the field work reports on fresh Ward Delineation; the exercise was thoroughly conducted.

“ Nobody should blackmail INEC, the  electoral umpire had done the needful and corrected the political anomaly in Warri Federal Constituency. INEC had successfully implemented the Supreme Court judgement on fresh Ward delineation in Warri Federal Constituency”

“ As rightly mentioned by Ayiri Emami that there will be no fight over the fresh Ward Delineation, the Ijaws and I, Chief Michael Johnny do not want to fight as well. But I can say that Itsekiri and Ijaws of Gbaramatu in Warri South West have a common enemy which is “ UNDERDEVELOPMENT”. This is what we should focus on to address and lay a solid foundation for peace and development for the future generations”

He further noted: “ The Gbaramatu man is not responsible for the underdevelopment in Itsekiri land, and the Itsekiri man is not responsible for the underdevelopment in Gbaramatu land. We must have this in mind. In conclusion, I urge my friend and brother, Ayiri Emami to leave INEC alone and allow the Commission to do their constitutional work unhindered on the fresh Ward delineation in Warri Federal Constituency.”

The Ijaw leader said the perceived intimidation and blackmailing of INEC must stop henceforth.

  • Use of ‘Royal Highness’: Court strikes out Otaru of Igarra’s suit

Use of ‘Royal Highness’: Court strikes out Otaru of Igarra’s suit

A High Court sitting in Benin City has struck out a suit filed by the Otaru of Igarra, His Royal Highness Oba Emmanuel Adeche Saiki II, seeking to restrain members of the Eziobe group of clans in Igarra, Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, from using the title “His Royal Highness.”

The Otaru had approached the court to declare that the use of the appellation “His Royal Highness” by the Eziobe group was illegal, misleading, and an encroachment on his traditional authority as the paramount ruler of Igarra and the Akuku clan.

He also asked the court to interpret and enforce a judgment delivered in 1985, which he claimed barred individuals within the Eziobe group from styling themselves as “His Royal Highness.”

The Otaru further objected to the proposed installation of a new traditional title holder by the Eziobe group, to be known as Oshinoyi — a position intended to represent the broader Igarra community, excluding the Akuku clan.

The suit, filed under Suit No: HIG/39/2023 at the High Court of Justice, Edo State, Igarra Judicial Division, was instituted by Oba E.A. Saiki, suing for himself and on behalf of the Five Other Ruling Houses of Igarra and the Akuku Clan.

The Defendants include HRH Barr. S. S. Mayaki, sued on behalf of members of the Eshimozoko family (excluding dissenters),

HRH. Aliu Ogbodo Suleiman, representing the Anona family,

HRH. Sunday Otaru, for the Anonyete family,

Hon. Sunday Saiki, sued on behalf of members of the group styled Eziobe Clan of Igarra.

Also joined in the suit by a court order were Chief Charles Shanu Aiyelabola ( the Akuta of Igarra) and Alhaji Dahiru Bayode Daniyan (the Oga of Igarra), for the Ezidowo group of families of Igarra, Oba Lawani Daudu, the Odafe of Akuku,

    S. O. Akao, representing the Akuku community.

These parties were all accused by the claimant of unlawfully adopting the style “His Royal Highness” and attempting to institutionalize rival traditional authority structures outside the jurisdiction of the Otaru.

However, the case took a different turn as the court, presided over by the Chief Judge of Edo State, Hon. Justice Daniel Okungbowa, declined jurisdiction and struck out the matter.

In a ruling, Justice Okungbowa held that the court could not entertain the case because a similar suit on the same subject matter (Suit No. B/553) is currently pending before the Fugar High Court — a court of coordinate powers. As such, entertaining the suit in Benin would amount to an abuse of court process.

The defense team, led by Barrister Razak Isenalumhe, had argued that the existence of the pending Fugar case rendered the present suit incompetent. They maintained that no court can override or interpret a decision from a court of equal standing while the matter is still active.

Read Also: Isabella Olatunji makes history as first Nigerian to win Mrs. Canada globe

Justice Okungbowa agreed with the argument, stating that the High Court in Benin lacked the legal authority to revisit or enforce a judgment delivered by another court of equal rank. He subsequently struck out the application.

Speaking to reporters after the ruling, Barrister Topa Jatto, one of the defence lawyers, described the judgment as “a victory for law and order.”

“This decision reaffirms the principle that no court can assume jurisdiction over a matter already being adjudicated by another court of equal status. It’s a solid win for judicial discipline and due process,” he said.

Also reacting, a representative of the Eziobe group of clans, Mr. Moses Skinner Gadimoh, welcomed the ruling and offered his interpretation of its broader cultural implications.

“Under Nigerian law, the use of the title His Highness or ‘His Royal Highness’ is not exclusive to any individual or traditional institution unless expressly reserved by statute or gazetted recognition,” Gadimoh explained.

“While traditional authority should be respected, the court cannot be used to settle cultural or customary rivalries where no legal breach has occurred. Unless it is tied to a gazetted chieftaincy position, the use of the title *His Highness or ‘His Royal Highness’* cannot be legally restricted.”

The ruling has sparked widespread jubilation among the Eziobe group of clans, many of whom gathered at the palace of *the Oshemdase of Igarra* to celebrate what they called a landmark victory for fairness, recognition, and cultural plurality.

According to Elder Obed Abogunmoza, “This judgment has bolstered the Eziobe family’s confidence in the other pending matters, and they are optimistic that subsequent judgments will resolve the longstanding dispute.

“It will also reaffirm the distinctiveness of the Eziobe clan and its royalty. And clearly differentiate it from the Eziezu family while establishing the Eziobe clan’s unique identity and royal heritage”.

  • N/Delta youth coalition urges Tinubu, security chiefs to intervene in pipeline surveillance contract dispute

N/Delta youth coalition urges Tinubu, security chiefs to intervene in pipeline surveillance contract dispute

A coalition of youth leaders under the Niger Delta Ethnic Nationalities Youth Leaders Forum for Peace & Development (NDENYLFPD) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the nation’s security chiefs to urgently address rising tensions in the region over pipeline surveillance contracts.

The group raised concerns over recent threats and inflammatory statements allegedly made by a faction operating under the name Aggressive Niger Delta Freedom Fighters Forum, which they say are aimed at inciting unrest and discrediting Pipeline Infrastructure Nigeria Limited (PINL) — a company chaired by His Imperial Majesty, the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse II (CFR).

In a statement titled “Condemnation of Crisis-Inciting Statements Against PINL and the Olu of Warri – A Call for Urgent Presidential Intervention,” the coalition condemned social media campaigns demanding the termination of PINL’s surveillance contract, describing the messages as reckless and unrepresentative of the broader ethnic nationalities in the Niger Delta.

The communique, signed by youth leaders from the nine oil-producing states — including Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Ondo, and Cross River — reaffirmed their commitment to peace and stability in the region. They urged the federal government to disregard the inflammatory remarks and to take swift action to prevent a possible breakdown of law and order.

The appeal followed an emergency meeting convened in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, by Senior Comrade Ambassador Tamuno James, where the coalition discussed what they described as a “dangerous narrative” being pushed by faceless agitators.

Ambassador James said, “This so-called group recently issued a highly provocative petition on social media, urging President Tinubu to revoke a legally awarded pipeline surveillance contract being executed by PINL. This is a direct attack on both the company and the respected traditional leadership of His Imperial Majesty, the Olu of Warri.”

The youth coalition urged the public to disregard the group’s claims, emphasizing that such divisive rhetoric undermines the peace-building efforts in the Niger Delta. They also reaffirmed their support for legitimate economic activities and government partnerships aimed at protecting critical oil infrastructure.

“We regard such calls as nothing short of an open invitation to chaos, and a calculated attempt to destabilise the fragile peace that the Niger Delta region has worked so hard to maintain over the years.

“The baseless suggestion that PINL should be barred from operating in Ijaw territories is a direct affront to peace, unity, and the collective aspirations of the region’s ethnic nationalities.

“We are particularly concerned that the so-called Aggrieved Freedom Fighters Forum went as far as issuing a petition to the federal government, accusing PINL of alleged marginalisation of Ijaw youths, rampant bunkering activities, sponsoring tribal conflict, forceful renaming of Ijaw communities, and laying false territorial claims over Ijaw and Urhobo lands.

“Such inflammatory claims, lacking verifiable evidence, are aimed at creating division, inciting violence, and discrediting a legitimate contractor performing national assignments.

“For the records, the national leadership of the NDENYLFPD wishes to categorically counter these baseless allegations as follows: on the allegation of marginalisation, it is on record that PINL employs all surveillance and security personnel directly from host communities, including Ijaw territories along the Trans Niger Pipeline (TNP) corridor.

“The claim of exclusion is false and mischievous. Among all surveillance contractors in the Niger Delta, PINL remains the only company that holds monthly stakeholders’ engagement meetings with traditional rulers, women groups, youth leaders, and community representatives. This includes the IYC, MOSEIND, Ogoni Youth Council, Bonny Federated Body and others in Rivers and Bayelsa states, with NNPC Limited, NSA, and military officials in attendance.

“On the allegation of unchecked bunkering, this is clearly a distortion of facts. The PINL-managed sections of the Trans Niger Pipeline, spanning Bonny to Nembe Creek and across host communities in Bayelsa, Rivers, Abia, and Imo states, have remained vandalism-free for years.

“This exceptional record is known and acknowledged by the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, NNPC Limited, and the Office of the National Security Adviser. No other contractor has achieved such performance in our history.

“On the accusation of sponsoring tribal conflict, the alleged link between the Olu of Warri and a British national found with weapons is spurious and defamatory. His Imperial Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III (CFR) is a globally respected first-class monarch, a peace ambassador across the Middle East and Africa, and an internationally educated statesman with numerous academic honours.

“He cannot be reduced to the level of engaging with faceless individuals who fail to provide any legal proof of land ownership within Warri Kingdom.

“On the renaming of Ijaw communities, the communities cited (such as Okenrenkoko to Okenrenghigho, Oporoza to Opuraza, and Azama to Azatiton) have long histories and names that reflect their original linguistic and cultural evolution. The claim of “forceful renaming” is a deliberate misrepresentation of reality designed to stoke ethnic tension.”

The Niger Delta youth leaders, therefore, urged Mr. President to treat the inciteful group as a threat to national security and declare them wanted for inciting violence and attempting to destabilise the now peaceful region.

They noted, “These elements, whose sole interest is profiting from instability and violence, must not be allowed to reverse the gains we have made in peace-building and economic stability.

“We, the youth leaders from all ethnic nationalities in the Niger Delta, remain committed to peace, justice, and equitable development. We believe in your leadership and trust that you will treat this issue with the urgency it demands to prevent the resurgence of the crisis in our region.”

“The men I have followed, this is what I have always seen them do, and I hope to continue to give back to the society with their encouragement.

“I want to do more for my people and pray that God continues to provide resources for us to embark on this project in a bigger capacity.”
