Wike: no project will be abandoned under Tinubu

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has vowed to do everything possible to ensure that projects under President Bola Tinubu are not abandoned.

Wike said this after an inspection tour of some projects in FCT.

The minister said most of the projects would be completed and commissioned by President Tinubu.

He said: “Since President Tinubu came on board, no work has stopped in all the sites. There are so many of these sites, but it will be difficult to take them all at the same time.

“We believe that after May, and before December, some of the projects will be handed over to the members of the public.

“The inspection is part of our routine inspection of ongoing projects, particularly those we have promised the public that God willing, by May this year, the projects will have been completed.

“What we did today was to go round to see for ourselves whether the contractors are meeting up with expectations”.

The minister expressed satisfaction with the progress of work so far, particularly at Guzape Lot II, which he said was going on very fast.

He said that the contractor, Gilmor Construction Company: “is doing all it can to meet up the date line, and we believe they are going to accomplish it.

He said: “Except for one set back where a lawmaker is stopping the contractor from further construction of one of the roads.

“We are not going to take it likely. This is not a private project: it is a public project handled by the FCT Administration.

“If there is any complaint, we think that whoever has a problem should complain to us and not go and use police to stop a legitimate company, carrying out construction work for the use of the public. These projects were approved by the Federal Executive Council.”

The Minister directed the contractor to go ahead with the road construction, adding that the project was part of those to be commissioned by President Tinubu in May.

Wike, who also inspected the B6 and B12 road, Independence Avenue, in the Central Area, being handled by Julius Berger, also expressed satisfaction with the progress of work.

“The representative of the company said that in May, they will hand it over. We are very happy,” he said.

Wike, however, complained that the security barriers erected by the Central Bank of Nigeria have constituted an obstruction to the ongoing road project in the area.

The minister, who said the obstruction would not be accepted, said: “One thing with institutions is that, when they apply for land and we give them, they go beyond what was given to them to cause obstruction.

“I have always said, anything for the public, we will not take for granted. So, we want the central bank to allow us to use what belongs to us for the interest of the public.

“By and large, we are happy with what we have seen”.

In a related development, the minister expressed dissatisfaction with some of the contractors handling some of the road resurfacing projects in parts of the city.

Wike, in a meeting with some of the contractors, after the inspection tour in his Conference Room, said unofficial visits to some of the project sites revealed some inactivity in the sites.

He asked the contractors to show him where they were working, adding that nobody collects mobilization and would not show seriousness.

“I have also said before, and will continue to say it, we will not award contracts when we don’t have money. Any contract that is awarded since I came on board, know that there is cash backing.

“I am not talking before; I am talking about since the inception of President Tinubu’s government. There is no need for awarding contracts when there is no cash.

“So, having mobilized you, I was thinking by now, we would have seen a lot of equipment on sites.

He asked the contractors to tell him the sections each of their companies were handling, “where they are working, and what stage they are at, and I am tired of memos.

“No, I don’t want a memo again, what I want is seeing physical presence, I am tired of memo,” Wike repeated.

The minister, who said he was not happy with the resurfacing contracts awarded in December 2023, asked the contractors to indicate if they are not ready to deliver as agreed.

  • Northern elders faults relocation of key CBN departments to Lagos

Northern elders faults relocation of key CBN departments to Lagos

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF), yesterday, faulted plans by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to relocate major departments from the Abuja headquarters to the former headquarters in Lagos.

The NEF recognizes the importance of the departments in question, including Banking Supervision (DBS); Other Financial Institutions Supervision (OFISD); Consumer Protection Department (CPD); Payment System Management Department (PSMD); and Financial Policy Regulations Department (FPRD) as vital components of the CBN.

NEF, in a statement by its Director Publicity and Advocacy/Spokesperson, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, said that the forum is worried about the potential negative impact of relocating these essential departments on both the institution itself and the nation as a whole.

He noted that the movement of some departments would involve increased costs, loss of talent, disruption in operations, reduced coordination, regional economic disparities, impaired economic development in northern Nigeria, and decreased investor confidence in the nation’s economy.

Suleiman said: “It would require significant financial investment as the CBN would need to allocate funds for setting up new offices, purchasing or leasing properties, relocating employees, and other infrastructural requirements. This would strain the CBN’s budget and divert resources away from other essential functions and initiatives.

“The CBN has a well-established workforce in Abuja, including professionals with significant knowledge and experience. Moving key departments to Lagos may lead to a loss of skilled employees who are unable or unwilling to relocate. This brain drain could negatively impact the CBN’s performance and efficiency.

“Relocation would lead to a temporary disruption in the CBN’s operations. Employees would need time to adjust to their new surroundings, potentially causing delays in decision-making and implementation. The transition period could result in reduced productivity, inefficient processes, and decreased service levels, further impacting the CBN’s effectiveness…”

  • Northern group commends Tinubu, makes case for autonomous NHFSS to fight forest crimes

Northern group commends Tinubu, makes case for autonomous NHFSS to fight forest crimes

A group, North Central Youth Security Forum (NCYSF) has called on President Bola Tinubu to assent to the Nigerian Hunters and Forest Security Service (NHFSS) Bill which has been passed by the Senate and the House of Representatives.

The group, which has Comrade Yashim Luka Doherty as its national coordinator, made the call at a briefing on banditry and other forms of insecurities in Nigeria and the Federal capital Territory which took place at Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Utako, Abuja.

NCYSF, which harped on the need to make the NHFSS an autonomous agency under the Federal Ministry of Interior, condemned the recent kidnap and killing of many Nigerians in the Northern region, especially the FCT, Plateau and Kaduna and urged security agencies to go after the killers in order to bring them to book.

It commended the President for some tactical measures recently put in place as well as his marching order to security agencies to ensure that such barbaric acts do not repeat themselves.

The group said: “Although insecurity in Nigeria has been with us for a long time and affects all parts of the 36 states of the country and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the North Central, especially Plateau, Benue and others, as well as some states in the North West like Kaduna and Zamfara, have become hotbeds of the nefarious activities of bandits and kidnappers, thereby making life unbearable for residents of affected communities.

“On January 15, that is three days ago, Nationwide Reports, an online newspaper reported that bandits who abducted 10 persons from an estate, Sagwari Layout, Dutse, Abuja, on January 7, killed three of their victims. The killers also increased their demand from the initial N60 million per person to N100 million, totaling N700 million. Among those killed was a 13-year-old high school student, identified as Folorunsho Ariyo and Nabeeha Al-Kadriyar. The question is, if the nation’s capital territory is not safe, where else can be safe in the country?

“In spite of these ugly occurrences, we wish to commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, who is barely eight months in office but has taken very strong measures to address insecurity and other criminal activities across the country. The recent marching order given by the President, to security agencies, to bring an end to the heinous crimes perpetrated these enemies of Nigeria as well as the proactive measures being adopted by the security agencies, are reassuring of the country’s capacity to stamp out the negative trend in no distant time.

“We also believe that more hands are needed to effectively fight and bring to an end, banditry, kidnapping, terrorism and other crimes and criminalities in the country, especially as these aforementioned dangerous activities are planned by hoodlums who use forests and bushes as hideouts.

“It is therefore pertinent to state that in order to effectively fight and defeat banditry, kidnapping and such other crimes, the federal government, as part of its general security architecture and strategy, should take deliberate and permanent measures, to ensure that forests are made uncomfortable for criminals to operate from.

“The above can be achieved through empowerment and deployment of well-trained and equipped professionals, who are specially trained to combat criminalities planned and executed within and around forests.

“It is on that note that we, the youths, especially from the North Central, North West and other parts of Nigeria hereby urge our dear President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to sign the Nigerian Hunters and Forest Security Service (NHFSS) Bil into law.

“From available records, the NHFSS has been in existence for over ten years, with well-structured command and control mechanism. The over 20,000 officers and men of the Service operating across the 36 states and the FCT have been at the mercy of individuals and groups who believe and appreciate their exploits and contributions to national security, especially on intelligence gathering and tactical operations within and around the forests.

“Gladly, many state governors, including those of Kebbi, Imo, Plateau and others, are already working with operatives of NHFSS by providing them with operational vehicles and other necessary equipment to carry out their patriotic duties to fatherland.

“By giving assent to the NHFSS Bill and thereby making it an autonomous government agency under the Ministry of Interior, the government would have succeeded in empowering the organization to carry out their statutory responsibility with new vigour, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr. President.

“There is no doubt that making the NHFSS a government agency would attract added financial burden on the Federal Government, but the added cost cannot be compared with the huge losses incurred by the nation from banditry, kidnapping and other criminal activities, including killing of hundreds of Nigerian citizens and other nationals, denting Nigeria’s image at home and across the world which in turn affects the government’s drive to attract investors for the hundreds of solid mineral deposits and other opportunities in the country.

“Aside from the above, the NHFSS is a potential source of massive employment of the teaming army of unemployed young people in the country. With the President’s assurances that opportunities would be opened to employ millions of youths by his administration, the NHFSS provides the government the wide window to achieve that, also knowing that employment of young people is one of the surest ways to tackle insecurity by keeping them positively engaged and therefore off ‘the streets.”

Group hails Tinubu on pipeline contract renewal

The National Probity and Value for Nation Building Organisation has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the renewal of the pipeline surveillance contract of TANTITA Security Company.

The group through its spokesperson, Adewale Balogun, appraised the work done so far in the fight against crude oil theft in the last year.

Balogun lauded the arrest of the vessel MT KALI and its crew by TANTITA Security Company owned by High Chief Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo alias Tompolo and men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) at the Pennington Oil Field in Bayelsa State.
