  • MRO facility to boost conservation of foreign exchange, says Keyamo

MRO facility to boost conservation of foreign exchange, says Keyamo

Minster of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN has said the Maintenance, Repairs and Overhaul, MRO, facility at the Victor Attah International Airport in Akwa Ibom State would help to conserve foreign exchange to be able to meet international obligations.

He stated this during an inspection of facilities at the airport. They included, the new International Terminal Building constructed by VKS Engineering Nigeria Limited and  MRO facility.

He said: “One of the problems hampering the operation of the aviation sector in Nigeria has always been the lack of facilities such as this[MRO]. Our aircraft will go out of the country for maintenance and may be there for months. But with this facility, we can conserve foreign exchange so they may meet their international obligations.”

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, accompanied by members of the State Executive Council, the Managing Director of Ibom Air, Captain Mfon Udom, the Chief Operating Officer of the airline, George Uriesi, the Director-General of the Campaign Organisation,Assam Assam, SAN and other stakeholders,  thanked Keyamo  for paying a working visit to the state.

The governor said the state has an aviation ecosystem  that Nigeria can work with and compete with the rest of Africa  and  the world.

He thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for being a great father of the nation, adding that the state remains  dedicated to supporting  and showing loyalty  to his government.

Keyamo praised the state for the facilities, adding that “the potentials of this place are huge. It’s about 90-95 percent complete and by the time it becomes fully operational, I am very certain it will capture the whole of the markets in West and Central Africa and even up to North Africa and that’s what we have been looking for.”

The Minister said the International Terminal has met all the standards to be certified an international airport. He promised to mobilise all  agencies and regulatory bodies  in the Ministry,  to support the state.

He expressed confidence that the state would keep to international standards, while thanking Eno for the passion he has shown towards the project since he assumed office.

“There are two projects currently ongoing here:  The new International Terminal Building and of course the MRO. It’s not just a terminal building, what I am seeing here is a hub. It’s a proper hub where we can process international passengers and transfer them from one section to the ether for them to catch their international flights. What we have here is a hidden jewel, but it’s all for the good of our dear nation,” Keyamo said.

Arewa condemns call for suspension of army chief

The leadership of Arewa Youth Assembly for Good Leadership (AYAGL) has described as “unpatriotic” the call by the Arewa Economic Forum and Arewa Youth Consultative Forum for the suspension of Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa and other appointees in the security architecture.

In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Amb Abdul Danbature, the youths noted that the call was in bad faith, stating that the group calling for the suspension are sponsored by agents of darkness to denigrate the effort of  the Nigerian Armed Forces, knowing that they have been working round the clock to restore sanity to the country.

He said: “They are paid agents and their views on national matters cannot be taken seriously. The Armed forces under the leadership of General Musa, has been tackling security challenges in the country. Notorious criminals and armed bandits have been arrested all over. Calling for their sack or suspension is needless, unpatriotic and  not necessary”.

“Nigeria now has a President who is committed to fighting corruption and vigorously pursuing the renewed hope agenda. We must use to opportunity to purge our country of corrupt and inefficient leaders who are only after looting our commonwealth.

“We also call for the suspension and subject the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Abel Olumuyiwa Enitan to thorough probe.

“It is not possible for the Permanent Secretary to be uninvolved or unaware of the sleaze that happened in a ministry where he is the Chief Accounting Officer and highest ranking Civil Servant. He, therefore, cannot be absolved without a deliberate scrutiny to his less than impressive roles.

  • NAHCON signs agreement with Saudi’s hajj services

NAHCON signs agreement with Saudi’s hajj services

The Chairman of National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Malam Jalal Arabi, on Sunday signed Hajj 2024 agreement with Ithraa Al Khair Company at the Hilton Convention Hotel, Jabal Umar, Makkah.

This agreement contains details of service delivery expected from the group and the cost of each service along with penalties in case of violation by any party.

Signing of this agreement followed careful survey of packages offered by other Mutawwif companies that met with the NAHCON team and others during the just concluded Hajj and Umrah exhibition.

Chairman of the Ithraa Mutawwif Company, Dr Ahmad Sindhi and Malam Arabi cautioned officials of the company to discharge their responsibilities to the pilgrims with all sincerity as contained in the pact.

Dr Sindhi emphasised that NAHCON will be involved fully in monitoring service provision from implementation of agreement to the end of execution.

The NAHCON helmsman expressed that this is time to start the relationship afresh between NAHCON and the Mutawwif Company, on fresh terms built on trust.

He urged Dr Sindhi to make sure the errors that happened in the past do not happen again.

Dr Sindhi promised to continue with an open line of communication to fix any problem immediately before it escalated.

He assured of the Company’s readiness for teamwork with the singular objective of serving pilgrims well.

He explained that working with NAHCON along the years has made them smarter and better that put them in a position to always improve.

In another development, countries with large number of pilgrims have been mandated to sign the Tafweej (group movement) Memorandum of Understanding.

The MoU provides a framework that each country must align itself with on Saudi Arabia’s system of moving pilgrims in groups especially during the five Hajj days.

Secretary to the Commission, Dr Rabi’u Abdullahi Kontagora, signed the Mou on behalf of the commission.

It would be recalled that the NAHCON Chairman, Malam Ahmad Arabi had earlier advised private Hajj managers present in the Kingdom to utilize the opportunity offered by the recently concluded Hajj and Umrah Exhibition to identify alternative service providers.

  • Wike orders arrest of street lights vandals

Wike orders arrest of street lights vandals

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has directed security agencies to clampdown on criminals vandalising street lights in the federal capital, Abuja.

Secretary, Command and Control Centre, Department of Security, Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Dr Peter Olumuji, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Abuja yesterday.

Wike had on assumption of duty as FCT Minister, identified the restoration of street lights as one of his cardinal agenda to light up the city, as part of efforts to make Abuja a befitting capital city.

However, while efforts were ongoing to restore and make all streetlights functional across the city, some miscreants resorted to vandalising the facilities, particularly the solar-powered ones in some parts of the city.

While noting that street lighting of the FCT had improved drastically in line with the directive of the FCT Minister, Olumuji acknowledged the ongoing sabotage by unidentified criminals.

He said that the FCTA Department of Security Service had received reports on the vandalisation of the streetlights, taking place mostly in the middle of the night.

He said the reports indicated that the miscreants target the solar-powered streetlights, their batteries, solar panels, and the lightning mechanisms, including the poles.

“The streetlights were bought with taxpayers’ money and installed to brighten the city at night and ensure that FCT is secured, but sadly, some criminal elements among us are vandalising them. This is sad,” he said.

He said the FCT Minister had directed the Police Commissioner, FCT Command, in charge of internal security to clampdown on the criminals sabotaging ongoing efforts to light up the city.

He added that the officer in charge of critical infrastructure and national assets at the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) was equally asked to work with the police to track and arrest the culprits.

“The minister had directed the security agencies to ensure that all the miscreants that go about vandalising streetlights are apprehended and prosecuted to end the wicked act.

“They are making progress and soon, some of the vandals apprehended would be paraded and taken to court for prosecution. The streetlights were installed for the benefit of all residents and to enable people to move freely within the city at night.

“However, you cannot vandalise the streetlights and still complain that the government is not doing anything,” he said.

Olumuji said that while there are plans to replace the vandalised streetlights, residents should learn to take ownership of facilities installed in their areas by reporting any suspicious movement to security agencies.

He explained that good illumination improves security within the city because no criminal element wants to operate under the glare of light.

“They always carry out their trade under darkness. So, when you have all the streetlights working, it improves and aids better security of lives and properties,” he added.

  • Workers march on Abuja over posting of Perm Sec

Workers march on Abuja over posting of Perm Sec

There was tension in Abuja as workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), under the Joint Unions Action Committee (JUAC), protested the deployment of a Permanent Secretary (PS) for the FCTA, by the Head of Service of the Federation.

The protesting workers also called for the full implementation of the FCT Civil Service Commission (CSC) Law, 2018, which provided for the appointment of PS from the FCTA.

The Office of the Head of Service of the Federation had announced President Bola Tinubu’s approval for posting of 24 Permanent Secretaries in Federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDA).

Among the affected PSs is Dr. Magdalene Ajani, who was redeployed from the Transportation Ministry to the FCTA to replace the current PS, Olusade Adesola, who would retire on January 29.

JUAC President, Matilukuro Korede, who spoke on behalf of the workers in Abuja yesterday, challenged the deployment, which he described as an aberration of the FCT CSC Law.

Korede said the Federal Executive Council had in October 2023, approved the implementation of the law establishing a CSC for FCT.

The president said by this development, the Head of Service of the Federation, Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan, did not have power to appoint a Permanent Secretary for the FCT.

The Nation recalled that the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike had in October 2023, announced President Tinubu’s approval for the establishment of CSC for the FCT.

Wike had explained that the development would allow career progression for civil servants in the FCT Administration to become permanent secretaries, who before now could only get to the position of a director.

He explained that the directors could not get to the peak of their careers because there was no CSC for FCT.

JUAC president, therefore, described the action of the Head of Service as faulty, and called for the full implementation of the FCT CSC Law.

“On Thursday, we heard that the head of service has announced that she has gotten approval from President Tinubu to deploy another Permanent Secretary to FCT.

“We felt aggrieved because it is an aberration. As we speak now, the FCT CSC Law has been gazetted since 2018,” he said.

He said that since 2004, the staff of FCTA had been deprived of becoming permanent secretaries, adding that the law to make it possible was signed in 2018 but implementation became a problem.

He said that Wike took the issue and within a month, secured President Tinubu’s approval for the implementation of the law.

“But to our surprise, the Head of Service decided to include a name for appointment as permanent secretary for the FCT. As far as FCT is concerned, the permanent secretary should be appointed among the qualified directors in the FCTA and not from outside.

“This will provide an opportunity for the staff of FCTA to get to the peak of their career by becoming a permanent secretary.

“Our demand, therefore, is that the appointment of a permanent secretary outside the FCTA is an aberration and an anomaly that should be corrected. We are waiting for the implementation of the FCT Civil Service Commission,” he said.

He added that if the Head of Service insists on appointing a permanent secretary from outside the FCTA, then she has to wait for the law to be amended and be given the power to do so.

“But between now and then, the law must be obeyed and what we know is that FCT CSC has come to stay,” he added.

Korede equally announced to the protesting workers that Wike had reached out to the leadership of JUAC and asked them to be calm.

He said that the minister promised to meet with President Tinubu over the issue and would get back to them.

He, therefore, asked the workers to shield the sword and return to work, while awaiting feedback from the minister, which would determine the next line of action.

  • The Importance of History, the Bloody Coup of January 15th 1966 and a Tribute to Our Heroes Past

The Importance of History, the Bloody Coup of January 15th 1966 and a Tribute to Our Heroes Past

Nigeria is the only country in the world in which history is not taught.

This policy has done us much harm and represents perhaps the greatest, most savage, most brutal and most destructive blow to the pysche, confidence, knowledge, intellectual acumen and mental health of our people.

The consequence of this egregious and unbelievable error and grave oversight is the fact that we are now having to contend with a vast population of over 220 million people who are essentially ignorant of their own past, that have no knowledge of their noble historical heritage and that predicate and rationalise their nation’s existence on lies, misinformation, disinformation, falsehood, folklore, fairy tales, fantasy, self-serving and selective clap trap and a more than heavy dose of intellectual distortion and historical revisionism.

This is precisely why we are, in the main, essentially a conflicted and confused people who have no idea where we are coming from, where we are today or where we are going tomorrow.

This is why we, more often than not, view, discuss and debate our nation’s history with an emotional bent and from a thoroughly subjective, unintelligent and unintellectual prism rather than an objective, plausible, logical, level- headed, factual and intelligent one with strong primary sources and unassailable empirical evidence.

We have little or no regard or appreciation of the heroic deeds, monumental struggles, historical achievements and extraordinary sacrifices that our forefathers made in the struggle against British colonial rule, the fight for independence, the struggle against military rule and the challenges and obstacles that our politicians from the First, Second and Third republics faced, surmounted and overcame to get us to where we are.

This is our reality and frankly it is pitiful.

I say pitiful because without any knowledge of our history we are nothing.

Worse of all is the fact that, having learnt nothing from our past mistakes and numerous historical challenges because we have no idea about precisely what those mistakes and challenges were, it becomes inevitable for us to repeat them.

Permit me to tickle your collective fancies by asking the following questiins.

How many Nigerians know who Alafin Aole Arogangan, Sheik Usman Dan Fodio, Bishop Ajayi Crowther, Rev. Emmanuel Adelabi Kayode (my great grandfather), Herbert Macauly, Sapara Williams, Rev. Suberu Fanimokun, Isaac Boro, General Murtala Mohammed, Alhaji Ali Akilu, Alhaji Umaru Shinkafi, Colonel Gideon Orkar and Alhaji Waziri Ibrahim were?

How many know anything about Ernest Ikoli, Alhaji Aminu Kano, Chief Joseph Tarka, Owelle Nnamdi Azikiwe, Justice Daddy Onyeama, Chief Philip Asiodu, Chief Allison Ayida, Chief Hope Harriman, Chief Godfrey Amachree, Alhaji Adamu Attah, Alhaju Adamu Augie, Chief Solomon Lar, Alhaji Saleh Jambo, Alhaji Saleh Hassan, Oba Adesoji Aderemi and Alhaji Adamu Ciroma?

How many know much about General Hassan Katsina, General Ibrahim Babangida, General Shehu Musa Yar’adua, General TY Danjuma, General Sani Abacha, Colonel Abubakar Dangiwa Umar, Dr. Olusola Saraki, Chief KO Mbadiwe, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Sir Adetokunboh Ademola, Chief FRA Williams, Justice Atanda Fatayi-Williams, Oba Okunade Sijuwade and the Black Scorpion, Benjamin Adekunle?

How many know anything about the Black Victorians of the old Lagos colony or Sara Forbes Bonneta who was the god-daughter of Queen Victoria of Great Britain.

How many have ever heard about Sara’s distinguished and well to do husband, Captain James Pinson Labulo Davis, a wealthy  businessman and philanthropist from old Lagos.

How many know anything about the politics and history of Nigeria in the 1920’s, 1930’s, 1940’s, 1950’s, 1960’s, 1970’s, 1980’s and 1990’s?

How many knew that it was only in the 1950’s that Nigerians were allowed to live in the area of Lagos known as Ikoyi and that this came about only as a consequence of the long and bitter struggle and great and irresistible agitation of the proud and noble Nigerian leaders of the old Lagos colony of that day.

Up until then Ikoyi was a residential area that was the exclusive preserve of the European settlers and colonialists!

How many have heard about Justice Victor Adedapo Kayode, my Cambridge-University trained paternal grandfather who was one of the leading criminal lawyers of his generation, who was the third Nigerian to be appointed as a Magistrate (in those days all our judges were white) and who landed a dirty slap on the face of a British colonial officer in broad daylight outside the front door of the old Bristol Hotel in Lagos for his insolence, impertinence and overtly racist remarks!

The following day the matter was reported in the newspapers and it created quite a stir!

How many know about what really happened during our civil war and what led to it?

How many know about President  Shehu Shagari and the Second Republic and how many have any knowledge of Chief MKO Abiola in the third?

How many know about military rule in Nigeria and who the main players were and how many have any idea about the coups and attempted coups we have experienced since independence?

Sadly most Nigerians, particularly in the Gen Z generation, know NOTHING about their nations past and its major players and even when they do that knowledge is sparse, scanty, shallow and, more often than not, minimal, inconsequential and obscure.

It really is a tragedy and one of the reasons that yours truly has written this contribution about the relevance of January 15th in our calender is to at least attempt to enlighten those that are intelligent enough to appreciate the importance of history and that have no idea why we even have or celebrate an Armed Forces Remebrance Day or where our seemingly unending troubles and turmoil really started.

    Consider the following.

Today is Armed Forces Remembrance Day and it is a day that we are constrained to rembember our fallen heroes.

Many in the younger generation do not know why this particular day was chosen to commemorate those that fell and the tragic events that led to their brutal murder.

Permit me to enlighten those that know no better and to share the facts.

58 years ago today, on January 15th 1966, a bloody, vicious, merciless, unrelenting and violent mutiny took place in our Armed Forces in which many of our reverred, respected and beloved political leaders and senior military officers, together with some members of their respective families, were humiliated, tortured, mutilated and finally murdered in cold blood.

Those that were killed were Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, the Prime Minister, Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto and Premier of the old Northern Region, Chief S.L. Akintola, the Premier of the old Western Region, Brigadier Zakariya Maimalari, Colonel James Pam, Brigadier Samuel Ademulegun, Colonel Ralph Sodeinde, Chief Festus Okotie-Eboh, the Minister of Finance, Colonel Arthur Unegbe, Colonel Kur Mohammed, Lt. Colonel Abogo Largema, Mrs. Hafsatu Bello, the wife of the Sardauna of Sokoto, Zarumi, the bodyguard of the Sardauna of Sokoto, Mrs. Lateefat Ademulegun, the wife of Brigadier Ademulegun, Ahmed B. Musa, Ahmed Pategi, Sgt. Daramola Oyegoke, PC Yohana Garkawa, PC Musa Nimzo, PC Akpan Anduka, PC Hagai Lai and PC Philip Lewande.

Two others were also abducted by the mutineers from their homes that night and brutalised. Thankfully they both managed to escape with their lives.

The first was Chief Remilekun Adetokunboh Fani-Kayode KC, SAN, CON, the Balogun of Ile-Ife and the Deputy Premier of the old Western Region (my beloved father).

Read Also: Supreme Court verdict: Mammoth crowd welcomes Gov Yusuf in Kano

I personally witnessed some of the events of that night when, led by one Captain Emmanuel Nwobosi, they came to our home and official residence in Government House, Ibadan and abducted him.

Thankfully he was rescued later in the day by loyal troops led by Lt. Colonel Yakubu Gowon (as he then was), Captain Paul Chabri Tarfa (as he then was) and Lt. Takoda, who stormed the officers mess in Dodan Barracks, Lagos where he was taken and was being held by the mutineers and freed him after a prolonged and bloody gun battle which resulted in deaths on both sides.

The second was Sir Kashim Ibrahim, the Governor of the old Northern Region who was rescued and freed by loyalist forces in Kaduna.

Both of these men were delivered by divine providence and went on to live for many more years and make their contributions to national development.

The coup was led by Major Emmanuel Arinze Ifeajuna and Major Chukuwemeka Kaduna Nzeogwu and 90% of the officers involved were Igbo.

The allegation that it was an Igbo coup is accurate and factual regardless of all attempts to revise and re-write history, often by the murderers and mutineers themselves, in a futile attempt to make it look otherwise and portray themselves as patriots and heroes.

They were far from either of the two and the bitter truth is that they were nothing more than a bunch of  cowardly, treacherous, self-serving, ungrateful, over ambitious, power- hungry homicidal maniacs and murderous butchers who attempted to take power through the barrel of the gun and impose an ethnic and religious agenda.

The assertion that it was not an Igbo coup is patently false and we owe it to those that lost their lives on that terrible night to at least speak the truth about what happened and who killed them.

I commend the historians, commentators and writers, including individuals like @renoomokri, who have collectively continued to pronounce and enunciate this sacred truth despite the insults and threats which they are often subjected to by those who are blind to the reality, who have no knowledge of history and who have been misguided and brainwashed into believing otherwise.

The cycle of violence that the unprecedented amount of violence and bloodshed that took place that terrible night unleashed was horrendous and not only did it lead directly to what has rightly been described by historians as the “Northern officers revenge coup” 6 months later in July 1966 in which 300 Igbo officers and the Igbo Head of State, General Aguiyi-Ironsi, was murdered but also to the infamous pogroms in the North where up to 100,000 Igbos were murdered by angry mobs and finally the civil war in which up to 3 million Igbo civilians and Biafran soldiers (including 1 million Igbo children) were butchered alongside hundreds of thousands of Nigerian civilians and gallant Army officers.

My prayer is that we never witness or experience such bloody events in our history again but if anyone is interested in knowing where, how and why this terrible series of events and cycle of brutality started they must consider the events of January 15th 1966 when the murderous barbarians that called themselves young Army officers unleashed mayhem on our leaders and killed so many of them in the most beastly and cowardly fashion.

History records all those that were murdered that night as heroes and we shall never belittle, forget or undermine the supreme sacrifice that they made for our beloved nation.

They live on in our hearts and we resolve to soldier on regardless and make Nigeria an even greater and better country than they sought to make it and to honour their memory by building on their great and noble heritage and legacy.

May their precious souls continue to rest in peace, may the Lord continue to protect, comfort and bless those they left behind including their families and loved ones and may God continue to guide and lead our great nation Nigeria.

    Happy Armed Forces Remembrance Day!

Yahaya suspends MD of state-owned micro finance bank

Gombe State Governor Inuwa Yahaya has approved the dissolution of the Board of Directors of the state-owned Bubayaro Micro Finance Bank.

Secretary to the State government, Prof Ibrahim Njodi, who conveyed the approval, said Governor Yahaya also suspended the bank’s Managing Director, Mr Mohammed Amtai.

The governor’s media aide, Mr Ismaila Uba-Misilli, made the board dissolution and suspension of the managing director known in a statement he issued in Gombe on Saturday.

He quoted Njodi as saying the governor’s decision followed the findings of a forensic audit into the financial activities of the bank.

He added that the decision was also based on recommendations made by appointed financial consultants and an audit report by the CBN.

“The managing director is to hand over responsibilities to the most senior official in the bank.

“All suspended board members and members of management are instructed to promptly hand over all official assets in their possession,’’ Njodi said.

He said an interim management had been established for the bank and would report to Mr Abubakar Dauda, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance and Economic Development for further directives.

“The directives are aimed at ensuring transparency, accountability and the safeguarding of the bank’s integrity and maintaining public trust in the system,” Njodi added.
