NNPP chieftain Ajadi commends Supreme Court over judgement on Kano Gov poll

A chieftain of the New Nigeria People’s Party, (NNPP) Amb. Olufemi Ajadi has commended the Supreme Court for upholding justice, saying the judgement on Kano Governorship poll has saved the country’s democracy.

He felicitated with Governor Abba Yusuf on his victory, noting it is well deserved and good development for Kano State.

The Supreme Court on Friday affirmed the election of Abba Yusuf as Kano Governor.

A five-member panel of the apex court held that the tribunal and the Court of Appeal erred by sacking Yusuf, candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) as Governor.

A statement by Ajadi after the judgement stated that the Supreme Court with its decision has saved democracy.

According to him: “We know all along that the wishes of millions of Kano voters will be upheld. I thanked our supporters nationwide for their peaceful conducts in the face of provocation by the All Progressives Congress, (APC) which wanted to take victory through the backdoor.”

“I now call on Governor Abba Yusuf to continue his good work for the progress of Kano State. I also felicitate our leaders led by Alhaji Rabiu Kwankwaso for their maturity, and peaceful conduct while the  case lasted, we thank God for the victory and NNPP will from now on go from leap to leaps.”

In March 2023, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Yusuf as the winner of the Kano governorship election.

The Kano Governor scored 1,019,602 votes to defeat Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who polled 890,705 votes.

In September, the Kano governorship election petition tribunal sacked Yusuf as Governor.

The tribunal deducted 165,663 votes from the 1,019,602 recorded for Yusuf because the ballot papers were not stamped, signed and dated as required by law.

The tribunal declared Gawuna a winner of the election.

Displeased with the verdict, the NNPP and its candidate challenged the judgment at the appellate court.

On November 17, 2023, the court of appeal upheld the tribunal’s verdict and added that Yusuf was not a member of the NNPP when he contested the election.

However, controversy trailed the verdict days later when an alleged Certified True Copy (CTC) of the Appeal Court judgment surfaced, contradicting the November 17 ruling.

The copy of the judgment ruled against and in favour of the NNPP candidate simultaneously, eliciting outrage on social media platforms and the streets.

The appeal court issued a statement blaming “clerical error” for the contradictions and discrepancies.

  • Wike angry over poor state of Abuja Metro rail

Wike angry over poor state of Abuja Metro rail

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, yesterday expressed shock over the state of the Central Metro Rail Station and the Kukwaba stations.

Wike warned that he will not tolerate excuses from the contractor, Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC).

He gave the warning when he inspected the Metro Train Station in the Central Business District, and the Kukwaba II station in the Piwoyi district alongside top officials of the FCT Administration.

Wike also expressed shock over the state of insecurity at the Central station and the engineering design of the Kukwaba station.

He said the contractor will have to work round the clock to be able to ensure the delivery of the project by the given deadline of May 24.

Wike had promised that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would ride on the train and Commission it May 29 to mark his one year in office.

He said: “When we first visited the Metro station, I discovered that there were many security lapses, and I remember when I first came after our inauguration, I did say that we have to work on the issue of security by putting up the fence around the Metro Station, to ward off criminals, but unfortunately, that has not been done. To my surprise, it was discovered that the contract was not even awarded to CCECC, it is a different contract awarded by the FCT, and this is my first time hearing that and we are going to take it up immediately, to see that it is being put in place.

“We must also talk about the kind of vandalization and stealing that is going on there. We have security companies that were awarded contracts to secure those areas, yet things are happening. Excuses are being given on how security agencies release those that are caught but for me, that is not enough, and we are going to make sure that we have a different method to be adopted, to see that we can’t continue to give excuses every day.

I have also directed that all the stations must be cleaned and also all the necessary things there must be provided. There’s no room for excuses at all”.

On whether the state of work at the stations could affect the May 24 deadline, the Minister said he was not a pessimist, and expressed hope that the project will be ready before May.

He added that companies handling the projects must speed up work.

“This is one project that I’m so passionate about, and you know that Mr. President gave me a directive that must not be taken for granted. Therefore, we must come and make sure that things are in good shape. So, I’m not happy, the company must speed up, and those who are doing the access roads must also speed up. Here we are standing, and we have been assured that this road will be completed before May, we just hope so and this is the best I can tell you now. I’m not a pessimist, but also, I doubt. But by putting all our energies together, we might achieve it”, he stated.

Minister pushes for restructure of World Bank scale up project

The Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has called for the restructuring of the World Bank, Nigeria for Women Program Scale Up (NFWP-SU).

The $500 million five years, World Bank programme which began last year is aimed at supporting the government to invest in improving the livelihoods of women in Nigeria.

The NFWP-SU is expected to help ensure better economic opportunities for women which is essential for addressing gender inequality; guaranteeing better education, health, and nutrition outcomes for families; and building women’s and communities’ resilience to climate change.

Kennedy-Ohanenye said her push for restructure does not condemn the work being done by the World Bank but is aimed at ensuring that women in communities have access to what they truly need through the project.

The Minister said this yesterday in Abuja at a stakeholder meeting on restructuring of the NFWP-SU project with the World Bank, UNICEF and other government Ministries and Institutions.

She said the government of President Bola Tinubu through the renewed hope agenda want the best for women in communities and want to ensure that the right things are channelled to the people in rural communities as they truly need.

She said: “The project has been on for five years; it’s called Nigeria for Woman project where the World Bank lends the money to the Federal and State governments.

“Coming in as the Minister of Women Affairs, I felt our women deserve better than what they were getting. It’s not like I am condemning what they were getting before but I just want them to get the best out if it by enhancing it…

“The new structure that we want put in place is what we came here to discuss. The World Bank has asked me to draw up a letter, I already did a letter to the President and he has approved the memo for the new restructuring and we have discussed what we want, we have equally gone to the National Assembly and they have approved the loan based on the new structure, so all we need now is to do the needful because the new structure would get them more profit and the women in such rural communities would benefit more and suffer less.”

Representative the Country Director of the World Bank Nigeria and Director Operations of the bank, Taimur Samad, said the World Bank simply responds to the needs of the people.

He said the structure of the project was drawn up and agreed upon by the government of Nigeria which signed to the details.

CSOs warn against attacks on Interior minister

The Civil Society and pro-democracy groups have condemned the recent attempt to drag the name of Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji Ojo in the ongoing accusation against the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu.

This was contained tn a statement by Ismail Ibrahim Bakori, the President of Arewa Voters Assembly (AVA) and Segun Adegoke of the Progressive Action for Justice Unity and Democracy (PAJUD).

They commended President Bola Tinubu for his prompt handling of the “EduGate in the best interest of the nation and by allowing the relevant agencies to investigate the matter to its logical conclusion devoid of interference from any quarters.”

A leaked document showed that New Planet Project Limited, a company founded by Tunji-Ojo, got a N438 million consultancy contract from the ministry.

Denying any wrongdoing, the minister said he resigned from the company in February 2019 when he was elected as a lawmaker in the House of Representatives.

The minister said he is no longer one of the directors of the company but admitted that he is still a shareholder.

The groups said: “Our attention has been drawn to the barrage of mischievous accusations being labeled against Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior by hirelings of mischief and failed politicians from the opposition party in their desperate attempt to link him with Edu Gate.”

The groups noted that in less than eight months that President Tinubu assumed office, Tunji-Ojo has come out with a well-defined mission, vision, blueprint and seriousness of purpose in the onerous task of addressing the multifarious problems and challenges confronting the ministry.

  • Onjeh commends Tinubu’s anti-corruption stance, seeks probe of distribution of FG palliatives

Onjeh commends Tinubu’s anti-corruption stance, seeks probe of distribution of FG palliatives

The All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial candidate of Benue South in the 2023 general elections, Comrade Daniel Onjeh, has applauded President Bola Tinubu for promptly suspending the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, over alleged corruption allegations.

He hailed him for also directing the chairman of the Economic Financial and Crimes Commission(EFCC) to conduct a thorough probe of all aspects of the financial transactions involving the ministry and its affected agencies.

In a statement on Thursday, Onjeh stated that President Tinubu had clearly demonstrated his government will not harbour any sacred cow in prosecuting the war against corruption.

He further stated that the expeditious investigation and prosecution of Edu case will go a long way in shoring-up public confidence in the current administration.

“It is truly very unfortunate that such humongous scandals are emanating from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, which is pivotal to providing short-term succour to the most impoverished members of the society, hence enabling the government to quickly win public trust, confidence, and support.

“Even Dr. Edu’s predecessor, Hajiya Sadiya Farouq, is currently being investigated by the EFCC over alleged laundering of N37billion under the tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari. These show that indeed, the ministry is a huge cesspool of corruption, which needs to be thoroughly sanitized,” Onjeh stated.

Onjeh further urged President Tinubu to remain resolute in ensuring that if found guilty, Edu and her predecessor, Hajiya Farouq, along with all their accomplices, are made to face the full wrath of the law.

“Betta Edu is the youngest member of President Tinubu’s cabinet. She’s just 37 years old. I think the scandal involving her and her ministry is not just an embarrassment, but a poor testimony of the younger generation, which has long been demanding fairer representation in Nigeria’s political space.

“Even the immediate past EFCC Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, was another very young man who grossly mismanaged a huge opportunity to project the Nigerian youths positively on the national and global stages. He was also removed from office for corruption,” Onjeh stated.

The former Chairman of the Governing Board of PRODA, Enugu also called on President Tinubu to direct a thorough investigation into the distribution of the palliatives released by the Federal Government to the states and National Assembly members during the last yuletide season.

“In line with the need to build public trust, I’m passionately appealing to President Tinubu to direct a comprehensive probe of the distribution of the palliatives released by the Federal Government to the various state governments, and especially the federal legislators, during the last festive season, to cushion the effects of the policy on fuel subsidy removal,” Onjeh stated.

Onjeh stated that his request was against the backdrop of a recent video that went viral online, wherein the House of Reps member representing Etsako Federal Constituency of Edo State, Hon. Dekeri Anamero, revealed that the Federal Government released four trailers load of rice to each House of Reps member, containing a total of 2,400 bags of rice to distribute to their constituents during the yuletide season, and the fact that in most federal constituencies across the country, the palliatives were nowhere to be found.

“It is obvious that the Federal Government had put good measures in place to mitigate the hardship imposed on poor Nigerians by the policy on fuel subsidy removal, but the handlers of these measures are sabotaging the government. If each House of Reps member got four trailers load of rice as palliatives, then it’s most likely that the senators got more. Unfortunately, no senator has come out clearly to tell us what the federal government gave to them. It is very important for the federal legislators to explain in detail, how they distributed these palliatives,” stated Onjeh

The former President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), expressed the view that some state governors may have embarked on misplaced priorities with the financial support they received from the federal government to mitigate the effects of the policy on fuel subsidy removal.

“Upon investigation, we may stumble across some of these palliatives in warehouses. I have strong cause to believe that some state governors and federal legislators may be hoarding the palliatives, with intent to use them to sway votes in the next election. Others may have even diverted and sold theirs.

“In my Senatorial District of Benue South for instance, I wish to particularly charge the citizens to demand what is truly theirs by holding their federal legislators to account on how they distributed the palliatives they received from the federal government during the last festive season. I suspect that our federal legislators have done a lot of disservice to my people,” Onjeh stated.

Onjeh argued that if all the palliatives released by the Federal Government to the State Government and federal legislators had been fairly and equitably distributed to the poor and needy in the society, it would have gone a long way in mitigating the economic hardship in the country occasioned by the policy on fuel subsidy removal.

He further stated that Tinubu had done what was best for the country by courageously implementing the policy of fuel subsidy removal, which was long overdue, and further putting adequate measures in place to cushion the adverse effects of the policy.

“It is now up to us, the citizens, to ensure that the palliatives released by government are distributed fairly and equitably in the society, so that the hardship which attended the fuel subsidy removal can be minimized, and the government can be focused. Otherwise, some disgruntled politicians will continue to latch onto the economic hardship in the country to incite the public against the government. Government needs the cooperation of every citizen, and the citizens must be patriotic enough to contribute enthusiastically to national development. But if they are being misinformed and misled about the federal government, it could stifle our national growth,” Onjeh observed.

Onjeh maintained that the war against corruption was not about targeting or shielding members of any political party but about fostering the unity, growth and development of the country.

He said found guilty of corruption should be dealt with in accordance with the law to serve as a deterrence to others.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Gombe State yesterday said it has recovery of the sum of N200 million for residents of the state in various cases handled by the corps last year.

This is coming on the heels of a warning by the corps of a potential explosion in contracting HIV in the state if a proactive measure is not taking to mitigate the risk.

Commandant of the Corps Mohammed Bello Muhktar, said the recovery of such a huge amount of money has boosted the confidence of residents in the corps.

Muktar said in 2023, the command received a total of 4158 cases from the general public, out of which, 3011 have been treated and concluded, with 1147 still ongoing.

“I assure you and I can beat my chest to say, of all these monies recovered, not a single kobo was collected from anyone…maybe that is why the general public is now focusing their attention to the Civil Defence,” he said.

He added that the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) desk office of the NSCDC played a pivotal role in handling 201 cases, concluding 157 and keeping 44 ongoing.

“During the review period, N44.23 million was realized, further underscoring the command’s dedication to tackling corruption,” he said.

He said the corps has filed 281 cases out of which 187 cases have been prosecuted, and 371 convictions have been obtained.

“We do not just arrest people but we try our best to secure convictions, and make sure we meet the demand of Justice for the general public. We do not collect a kobo from either complainant or suspect,” he said.

Muktar said Gombe State government employed the services of the NSCDC to deploy it’s agro rangers to farms so as to ensure a hitch free harvesting season.

“For over 20 years, Gombe state has never witnessed (a more) peaceful harvest season than in 2023 and that is because of the agro rangers. We have ensured the confidence of the farmers and that of the herders and we will continue in these efforts to ensure smooth and trouble-free dry season farming,” he said.
