    Benue governor suspends Assembly’s by-election

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia yesterday suspended the House of Assembly primary in  Guma Constituency scheduled for Guma local government area.

The governor said the exercise was suspended because of the unruly behaviour of  some National Assembly caucus members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who threatened to hijack the process.

He said in a statement that although these unnamed federal legislators were not from the constituency and local government,  they intruded and wanted to shift the venue to an unknown destination.

The governor alleged that these intruders wanted to perpetrate some irregularities, thereby going against the pattern of the rule of law set by the governor.

Speaking with reporters at the Old Banquet Hall of Government House, Makurdi, Alia said  he put the primary on hold to avoid crisis in the state.

He lamented that certain individuals had planned to truncate the shadow poll deny the stakeholders and delegates the freedom to exercise their franchise.

Fr. Alia said: “This posses some security threats in Guma local government and it became imperative for me to calm the nerves of all the party stakeholders, and delegates for the by-election primary down, who were feeling disenfranchised.

“In the last seven months, and counting, we have been experiencing relative peace, and efforts are being made by all the security agencies in the state that peace returns to the state permanently.

“So, I wouldn’t want all those efforts we have put in place to be in vein. I wouldn’t want anything that would resemble or even trigger non peace and insecurity at any corner, not only in Guma local government, but the entire state. And this is why I suspend the delegate primary election that is expected to be in place today (Saturday 6 January, 2024).

“Sad enough, the party faithfuls came out to exercise their franchise but were stopped at the gate. Some people that do not belong to the local government at all. Some big politicians from other locals governments, came and hijacked the process and even the officials that came in to do the elections, locked all the stakeholders out and then the youths were becoming quite emotional about the disenfranchisement and then I have to come in.

“Please, dear party faithfuls, you must assist me and all our security agencies to keep peace in the state. People are saying peace is returning to the state and it remains my prerogative to return even the IDPs back to their ancestral homes and farmlands.

“The same Guma local government where we are expected to hold this election, is the most vulnerable local government in the state and if I don’t come in immediately to arrest thea situation, a number of things can come in to take place. I wouldn’t want any bloodshed. People get quite sensitive and sentimental on issues of politics. So it remains my prerogative to maintain peace and security in the state.

“I have charged the security heads in the state to ensure that their is peace and calm in the local government just like any other local government in the state. I am working for you, and we are all working for the development of Benue State. That is my priority is your Governor.”

A statement by the governor’s aide, Donald Kumun, said the chairman of the primary election committee, Prof. Kabiru Ibrahim, had requested that screened aspirants and elected delegates for the conduct of the primary to converge at Avine Agbom Hotel Daudu, in Guma local government area, by 8:am before some people invaded the venue.

In his contribution, another member of Kano Emirate Council, Dan Malikin Kano, Ambassador Ahmad Umar expressed disappointment that some evil-minded people were abducting and selling northern minors and getting them sold in the south.

He emphasised that the tenacity of leaders which made Kano the home of other ethnic groups and nationalities must not be misconstrued as an avenue to inflict harm on the community.

Umar, who reviewed the steady rise in drug addiction among youth and its resultant effects, warned that this trend is not acceptable to the Emirate Council.

Convener and Chairman, Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Dr Farouk Umar called on traditional institutions to significantly mobilise their subjects to end child theft, drug abuse and all social vices.

Plateau killings: IAWPA African Director urges Tinubu to sign NHFSS Bill into law

The African Director, International Association of World Peace Advocates (IAWPA), Dr. John Metchie, has urged President Bola Tinubu to give assent to the Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Service (NHFSS) Bill, to empower and embolden Officers and Men of the Service fight crimes and criminalities carried within forests across the country.

The NHFSS Bill has been passed by the Senate and the House of Representatives, waiting for the President’s assent.

Metchie, who is also the Deputy Commander General of NHFSS in charge of Technical Services, made the appeal to President Tinubu in a statement on Sunday while reacting to the Christmas Eve attacks on some communities in Plateau state as well as similar assaults in other parts of the North Central.

While commending the President, Army, the Police and other security agencies for their response and control of the situation in Plateau and other affected areas, Metchie said a permanent solution is needed to ensure that criminals like bandits, terrorists, kidnappers, cattle rustlers and ritualists, among others, are denied access to forests and farms where they hide before and after carrying out their nefarious activities.

Metchie, who also serves as the Prime Minister, Anambra State Association of Town Union (ASATU), said although signing the NHFSS Bill into law would attract additional financial burden to government, the cost cannot be compared to the unquantifiable loss of human lives, burning of communities and destruction of their ways and means of livelihood caused by the attacks, year in, year out.

He pointed out the effect of insecurity is the primary cause of investor flight with serious consequence on the nation’s economy.

According to Metchie, the solution to banditry and other crimes and criminalities committed within forests is permanent deployment of well-trained professional hunters and forest security operatives across the country, to work with the Police, Army, DSS and other security agencies, especially in the area of intelligence gathering and sharing as well as apprehension of criminals.

According to him: “My first reaction to the Christmas Eve killing is some communities in Plateau State is to condemn the act, not only as a Nigerian and for our collective humanity, but as someone who was directly affected.

“This is because Plateau is my second home. My family has a long history with Plateau and especially Jos where I grew up. As I speak with you, I have a home in Jos and my wife is from the state. So, you can imagine how directedly affected that I am.

“As the African Director, IAWPA, I have been working round the clock, alongside of regional and national leaders of the global body, preaching peace and violence- free world across Africa and Nigeria in particular. Therefore, an act of violence in any form is an affront to our vision of a crime free world.

“Having said that, I wish to once again, urge our President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu, GCFR, to give assent to the NHFSS Bill so that it can become law.

“Already, with the support and endorsement of some state governors, NHFSS operatives are working with the Police, Army, DSS and other security agencies in the war against crimes and criminalities, especially in terms of intelligence gathering and distribution. NHFSS officials have been playing pivotal roles in the apprehension of criminals and prevention of crimes.

“What is needed now, and urgently too, is for the President to assent to the Bill, so that NHFSS operatives would have the boldness to discharge their duties without fear or favour as this would go a long way in curbing incidences of terrorism, kidnapping for ransom, banditry, ritual killing and other similar crimes in the country.”

Ex-NAHCON chair to professionals: be active in politics

The immediate past Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Alhaji Zikrullah Kunle Hassan, has enjoined Muslim professionals to show more interest in politics.

As professionals, Alhaji Hassan said, they have more to contribute to the nation in politics than their various professional fields.

He said the situation in the southwest shows Muslims are retrogressing on the political scene.

Alhaji Hassan spoke during the 10th Annual Convention of the Guild of Muslim Professionals (GMP).

While noting that he doesn’t buy the notion of playing religious politics over competence, the former NAHCON boss emphasised that there are competent Muslims who need the support of the Ummah and are capable to occupy and run many offices successfully.

He challenged leadership of GMP to produce politically-conscious Muslims that would vie for electoral positions in subsequent elections.

Also speaking at the event, the Managing Director of Lagos State Water Corporation, Mukhtar Tijani, described the GMP convention as a great platform where Muslim representation in politics can be increased.

Tijani, an engineer, urged Muslim professionals to follow their thoughts around varying issues of interest with a firm action plan.

According to him, the GMP convention should be a step to having more representation of Muslims in politics

“The first step to having more representation for Muslims in politics is organising this kind of discussion and encouraging fellow Muslims. We should encourage each other, fund ourselves and pick amongst ourselves. But honestly speaking, for me, I’ve not drawn a line between any religion in politics. Most people I deal with, I don’t consider their religion. And I’ve never really had a reason to compare Muslim representation,” Tijani said.

“I guess because of my political movement, I hear a lot of things people say about Muslim candidates or non-Muslim candidates. So, I think this is a great platform where people can meet and discuss and create some thoughts around these issues. I think the next thing that should follow this is actual action. As one of the speakers said, you join a registered party before you create your own party. And then you can now raise funds and directly promote or support candidates.”

He enjoined Muslims to be righteous wherever they find themselves.

“Encourage people to do what is right. What religion preaches is righteousness. Do the right thing for the community and not just yourself,” he added.

Another guest lecturer, Chief Financial Officer of MTN Nigeria, Mr Modupe Kadiri, said it was about time Muslim professionals set actions in motion.

“This is not going to be a journey of a short number of years. It might be a medium to long-term plan. But definitely, we need a strategic blueprint on how we are going to actualise and concretise the discussions we have been having over the past years,” he said.

Kadiri charged Muslim professionals to think differently by finding solutions instead of focusing on the challenges.

He said: “Opportunity happens when people take advantage of those things that we see that are not working. You are not going to have a situation where everything is going to be perfect. In this uncertainty or hard times, some people are making it. Why are they making it? They can think differently.

“Rather than focus on the problem, focus on how to create a solution to the problem. The economic circumstances that we face today, every other person faces it anyway. But how come some can thrive? My encouragement is for people to use the situation to think differently.”
