Lawmaker pays N38m tuition fees for 512 students

Member representing Fagge Federal Constituency, Kano, at the House of Representatives, Mohammed Bello Shehu, has settled N38 million tuition fees for 512 students from his constituency.

The beneficiaries are students of Ahmadu Bello  University (ABU), Zaria; Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto;  Federal University, Dutse, Jigawa state; and School of Hygiene, Kano, which has the highest number of beneficiaries.

Shehu, the philanthropist, told reporters during an interactive session in Kano that the gesture will be sustained throughout his stay at the National Assembly.

He said he will also build a primary school at Rijjyar Lemo area which has existed without a primary school over the years.

“Rijjyar Lemo does not have a single primary school. We took note of this; and already, I have secured a location for the building of modern primary school within the area.

“We have earmarked  N50 million for the commencement of the project,” he said.

Taking cognizance of the fact that Fagge in Kano is known for tailoring business, Bar. Shehu has also commenced sponsorship of cluster tailoring outfits within his constituency for major contracts.

“Arrangements have been concluded to register them with Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), so that they can get contracts to sow uniforms for schools, military and Para-military agencies.

“We are also lobbying the sowing of prison uniforms and other uniforms by our trained and empowered tailors in Fagge,” he said.

The lawyer said his office is not keeping blind eyes on the issue of flooding and erosion that have continued to devastate Fagge Constituency, as he has already commenced moves to access ecological funds from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

Shehu disclosed he has come up with a budget to rehabilitate, at least, two roads within Sabon Gari, an area dominated by non-indigenes.

Killings: Northern governors laud Tinubu’s steps to curb recurrence

The Northern Governors’ Forum has praised President Bola Tinubu for making efforts to probe the security crises in Plateau and Kaduna states in order to prevent a reoccurrence.

Chairman of the forum and Gombe State Governor Inuwa Yahaya, who gave the commendation in Hausa language on behalf of the body, also thanked the President for supporting the survivors and victims of other crises.

Yahaya addressed reporters at the Presidential Villa in Abuja after a meeting with President Tinubu.

“In my capacity as the Chairman of Northern Governors’ Forum, I praise the steps taken by the President in order to get to the root of what happened in these two states and the pledge he made that the right action would be taken to prevent future occurrence of these incidents. A bove all, I am thanking him for the support given to victims or survivors,” he said.

Commenting on Plateau killings, the governor noted that it was not a new thing, but said there was need for a review of the immediate and remote causes to find a lasting solution.

“Despite the fact that this matter has been there for long, it is time for stakeholders to have a round table and tell each other the truth and then take deliberate steps toward loving each other. Before now, the people were living in peace and going about their normal businesses.

“Some of the major issues that seem to allow the problem to persist include issues like farmer-herder clashes, the clamour for indigenes versus settlers. But the world over, if any society or country doesn’t welcome visitors, such a nation will not progress. After all, we here are one and the same family,” Yahaya said.

Kano Govt releases N1b to victims of demolition

    • Victims: We’ve lost over 30 persons

Leaders of Masallacin Eid Shop Owners and Traders Association, yesterday, said over 30 people lost their lives during and after the demolition of shops at Eid Ground by Kano state government.

Legal counsel to the traders, Ma’aruf Muhammad Yakasai, said the state government has paid the sum of N1 billion for the demolition of his clients’ properties but insisted justice must be done to those who died or suffered injuries as a result of the demolition.

The victims said they also want the “criminal aspect of the demolition” investigated and the culprits punished according to the law.

The association had dragged Kano state government to court, claiming damages of N250 billion. But the court ordered the state government to pay N30 billion as compensation for the demolition of more than 6,000 of their shops at the Eid Ground.

However, through out-of-court settlement, an agreement was reached that the state government will pay N3 billion in three tranches.

Briefing journalists at Kano Press Centre, lawyer to the victims Yakasai, said: “We have already received alert of N1 billion for the demolition, but justice must be done to their members who died as a result of the demolition, including those who sustained varying degrees of injuries.”

Yakasai said he has written the Kano State Commissioner of Police asking him to treat the case as criminal conspiracy, theft, misappropriation and mischief, contrary to sections 97, 286, 308 and 326 against Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso and others.

Part of the letter to the police reads: “We are only known as peaceful traders who only carry out lawful businesses within the area curved out from the Kofar Mata Eid-ground by Kano State Government and allocated to various individuals for commercial purpose.

“Shortly before the 2023 Governorship election, some people were heard and seen physically and over the media repeatedly, stating unequivocally, that if his party wins the election, they would demolish all the structures/shops (own by our members) at the Kofar Mata Eid-ground.

“Subsequently, NNPP emerged as the winner of the election, and Governor Abba Kabir Yusif, was sworn in. Unfortunately, even before cabinet members were nominated and appointed, Governor Yusif formed a committee with the sole responsibility of carrying out the demolition exercise. Our shops were demolished. Some criminal minds were also encouraged by the government to loot our properties as the demolishing was on going. They described our hard own properties as public properties and declared same as free for all.

“Consequently, the suspects succeeded in destroying all the structures; goods and monies (cash) kept in shops were stolen. Some of the victims lost their lives, some are now patients with different sickness, including the killer ‘stroke.’

“The victims’ orphans and children are left with no parental care and attention, many are rendered homeless. The total estimated value of the properties lost and destroyed is N260 billion…”

The Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umar Bago, has affirmed the readiness of his state to compliment the federal government’s agricultural drive by presenting itself for the pilot of 500,000 hectares 2024 dry season farming.

Governor Bago stated this yesterday while speaking to journalists at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu.

“Niger State is now the leading state in terms of the Food Security Initiative of Mr. President and there are some initiatives we have started, we’re about to do a 250,000 hectares dry season farming, which we’ve already signed an agreement with some companies for off-take and just to keep him up to speed about what we’re doing in agriculture.

“If you listened carefully to Mr. President’s New Year’s speech, you would have seen the emphasis on agriculture and also the 500,000 hectares that the government is planning to farm this 2024 and Niger State has already presented itself as a pilot state for that project and that we are also ambitious to also match with the federal government 500 for 500”, he said.

The governor said that President Tinubu is positive about the agric-project in Niger State while also encouraging the State to sustain the initiatives.

  • Orphans, widows pray for Tinubu, Alia as Onjeh distributes palliatives

Orphans, widows pray for Tinubu, Alia as Onjeh distributes palliatives

In continuation of his supervision of the distribution of palliatives in Benue South by the Benue State Government, the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial candidate for Benue South in 2023, Comrade Daniel Onjeh has visited and delivered palliatives to widows and two orphanages in Otukpo, the administrative capital of Benue South.

Onjeh met with the widows under the auspices of their various widows’ associations and visited orphans at the Children of Mary Orphanage and Motherless Babies Home at the GRA, and the Restorer Of Paths Care Foundation Orphanage/Rehabilitation Home located at Otada.

Speaking during the visits, Onjeh informed that he was merely a messenger as the gesture was an initiative of the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government to support the needy, less privileged and the poorest of the poor in the society in coping with the prevailing harsh economy, which is compounded by the short-term effects of the  policy on fuel subsidy removal.

The APC chieftain also stated Benue Governor, Dr. Hyacinth Alia, has honestly and diligently implemented the policy  to the latter in Benue State by fairly and equitably distributing all the palliatives he received from the Federal Government across the three senatorial districts of the state, to the benefit of the teeming masses.

Onjeh further stated that he opted to lead the visit to the widows and orphans to ensure that all the relief materials earmarked for them actually get to them, as they constitute a very special and dear category of the needy in any society.

The former Chairman of the Governing Board of PRODA, Enugu offered words of encouragement to the beneficiaries, stating that the current economic situation in the country will improve sooner than expected, having a firm belief that the policy direction of the current administration of President Tinubu holds great promise which will soon be delivered to Nigerians.

Onjeh argued the policy on fuel subsidy removal will favour all Nigerians in the mid and long terms, as hitherto under the subsidy regime, only a few individuals and cabals in the oil industry were benefitting stupendously at the expense of the generality of Nigerians.

Speaking to journalists during the visits,  he appealed to all State actors, well-to-do individuals and corporate organisations to extend some support to the needy, vulnerable and less privileged in the society, to enable them cope with the current economic hardship in the country occasioned by the declining global economy and exacerbated by the hike in fuel price due to the immediate effects of the policy on withdrawal of fuel subsidy.

The palliatives delivered by Onjeh to the widows and orphans were several 50kg bags of rice and corn, along with cash tokens.

Receiving the relief materials on behalf of one of the widows’ associations, the Founder of Daughters of Zion Widows Organization, Mrs. Janet Ada Onoja, expressed deep gratitude to President Tinubu and Governor Alia, for reaching out to them with the much desired relief at these critical times. She also prayed for the success of the APC Administrations at both the Federal and the Benue State levels.

Speaking on behalf of the orphans, the Founder of Restorer of Paths Care Foundation Orphanage/Rehabilitation Home, Mrs. Enuwa Efada Soo, said the palliatives delivered to them will go a long way in supporting the health, nutrition and general wellbeing of the children, while thanking Com. Daniel Onjeh for availing himself to render the selfless service to his people.

One of the children at her orphanage, Master Emmanuel from Agatu, offered copious prayers for long life and divine blessings upon both President Tinubu and Governor Alia. While he prayed for more palliatives to come from the Federal Government, he equally asked God to grant President Tinubu the wisdom to change Nigeria for good, and that a new Nigeria should be birthed under President Tinubu.

Onjeh has been supervising the distribution of FG’s palliatives in Benue South since January 1 on the directive of Alia.

The central distribution took place on New Year’s day at the Ahmadu Bello Way, Otukpo. Onjeh said he’s personally going round the orphanages and widows’ associations in Otukpo, to ensure that he delivers all the palliatives earmarked for them.

    • Bandits injure two policemen, kidnap Bwari residents

Residents of Garam, a community in Tafa Local Government of Niger State, are still under tension, following persistent attacks.

Many residents of the area, which shares a boundary with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), are now being displaced as they fled their homes, seeking refuge in urban centres.

Garam, which also shares a boundary with Kuduru, another troubled community in Bwari Area Council of the FCT, has been under severe attacks from bandits since December 24, 2023.

The raging attacks yesterday also spread to Zuma community in Bwari Area Council.

On December 24 last year, bandits invaded Garam community, which is very near Bwari in the FCT, killing a pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, while kidnapping 13 others.

On December 28, bandits again invaded Kuduru in FCT, kidnapping 18 persons.

Similarly, on December 29, bandits invaded Azu in Niger State, killing three people and kidnapping eight others.

However, following the ceaseless attacks, residents of Garam decided against observing watchnight or crossover service on December 31, 2023.

A resident of the community, who pleaded anonymity, said most churches in the area observed the crossover service between 5pm and 8pm, while a handful of churches with adequate security observed the crossover service between 10pm and 4am.

The source said the bandits returned on January 2, 2024, kidnapping a whole family, adding that the soldiers stationed in Azu, a neighbouring community, only arrived after the bandits had left.

He said: “Due to the fear of bandits, most churches did not observe crossover service on December 31. Some churches observed the service between 5pm and 8pm. It was only MFM that observed the service from 11pm to 4am.

“Though soldiers patrol the community during the day, it did not stop bandits from attacking the people at night.

“On January 2, an Igala man was attacked, and the bandits kidnapped the whole family. They came with their tools to force the gate of the house open. They operated for two to three hours. The sound of their guns forced the ‘vigilante’ team to flee. The soldiers arrived after they had left.”

Another resident said people were moving out of Garam in droves, while those who built houses there had sought refuge in other places.

He said the sprawling community is now being deserted, as the military appears to have run out of ideas to tame the bandits.

The source added that it appears the bandits are targeting those with cars who can easily muster ransom payments if kidnapped.

It was gathered that the bandits again entered Garam on Monday night and operated into the early hours of Tuesday, where they reportedly abducted three persons.

“The man who most residents described as NEPA staff, i.e., Abuja Electricity Distribution Company worker, was unlucky as bandits broke into his house, forcefully kidnapped him, his wife and his nephew, and escaped with them on motorcycles into the bush.”

Yesterday’s early morning attack on Zuma reportedly led to the shooting of two security personnel who were said to be receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital, while a yet-to-be-ascertained number of people were abducted.

The morning attack would be the fifth in the series since the attacks began on Christmas Eve, with residents putting the estimates of kidnapped people at over 55.

Although three persons were killed in the series, a fourth was reported to have died based on the traumatic experience of losing her husband to the kidnappers.

“The fourth person who died was the wife of the Redeemed Christian Church of God Pastor, who was earlier killed in the presence of his family.

“She was recovering when the bandits called her line to place a ransom on her two kidnapped children, who are in the bandits’ camp. Having heard the demands, the woman, who could not bear the grief of the loss of her husband and agony of her two tender children, who are within the ages of seven and nine, slumped, reportedly went into a coma, and later died on Tuesday,” said a community source.

Efforts to get the reaction and confirmation on some of the incidents were futile, as the FCT police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, did not pick her calls or respond to text messages.

Kano announces wage awards for workers, pensioners

Workers and retirees on the payroll of the Kano State government are to enjoy N20,000 and N15,000 respectively as wage respectively.

The news came yesterday after the government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC).

The agreement to pay wage award was part of efforts to offer palliative, aimed at alleviating the economic challenges experienced by civil servants in the state, following the removal of the fuel subsidy.

The civil servants and the pensioners will be receiving the amounts monthly, effective from last month, it was learnt.

Kano State Chairman of TUC, Mubarak Buba Yarima, who broke the news to reporters, said the MoU was possible because of the role played by Labour unions during the negotiation with the government.

A statement by the union’s Secretary, Abdu Usman Yalo, said the pact was reached after thorough discussions with the committee set up by Governor Abba Yusuf on the issue.

The statement reads: “The agreement for the palliative emerged following a joint plea submitted to the Kano State Government in October last year by the NLC and the TUC, seeking intervention amid prevailing economic difficulties.

“In a prompt response, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf promptly set up a special committee to assess the situation.

“The committee’s findings led to the consensus that a N20, 000 palliative would commence from December 2023 for all civil servants at both state and local government levels.”

According to Yarima, the palliative would continue until a comprehensive review of the minimum wage is undertaken within the next six months.

He added: “Additionally, pensioners would receive a monthly palliative of N15, 000 for three months, along with arrears for the missed December 2023 allowance.

“We believe this will significantly assist many people and enhance workers’ morale.”

  • Court gives Kano Govt seven days to respond to claims by councils

Court gives Kano Govt seven days to respond to claims by councils

A Federal High Court, Abuja, yesterday, gave Kano State government seven-day ultimatum to show cause why the ex-parte orders sought by the 44 local government areas (LGAs) of the state should not be granted.

Justice Donatus Okorowo gave the order, in a ruling, shortly after counsel for the plaintiffs and lawyers to the defendants presented their arguments for and against the application.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Justice Okorowo had, on December 28, declined to grant the application seeking to bar Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State from disbursing or spending funds and allocations belonging to the 44 LGGs.

The judge, rather, ordered the defendants to appear before him on January 3 to show cause why the restraining orders should not be granted.

He equally granted the plaintiffs’ plea for an order of substituted service on the defendants.

NAN reports that the ex-parte motion, marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1733/2023, was filed by the 44 LGAs and the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Kano State Chapter on December 27.

In the suit, Kano State government, the Kano State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice and the state’s Accountant-General were sued as 1st to 3rd defendants respectively

They had prayed the court for an order restraining the defendants/respondents from controling, managing, further administering, disbursing and spending the funds and allocations belonging to the 44 LGAs of Kano State in the Kano State Joint Local Account, pending the hearing and determination of the plaintiffs’ substantive suit.

Upon resumed hearing yesterday, the plaintiffs’ counsel, Ibrahim Nasarawa, informed the court that the matter was adjourned for the defendants to show cause why the interim orders should not be granted.

Nasarawa said the defendants were served in line with the court order but they had failed to file their processes to show cause within the three days prescribed by rule of the court.

The lawyer, therefore, prayed the court to grant the orders sought in their ex-parte motion in accordance with Order 26, Rule 11 of the FHC.

But Hafeez Matanmi, who appeared for the 1st and 2nd defendants, disagreed with Nasarawa’s submission.

He told the court that he was only briefed the previous day (Tuesday) by his clients and had filed a memorandum of conditional appearance today (Wednesday).

Matanmi, who said that Nasarawa was served with the application earlier in the morning, stated that he was yet to see all the plaintiffs’ processes in the matter

He argued that he could not have put up a defence in the case without seeing the processes filed, including the motion on notice and the orders.

He said there is no way he can show cause without seeing all the processes including the motion on notice as well as the orders.
