NUJ FCT seeks Wike’s intervention on deplorable infrastructure at Council Secretariat

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has appealed to the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, to urgently intervene in addressing the dilapidated state of infrastructure at the Council Secretariat in Utako, Abuja.

The appeal formed a major resolution at the second Congress of the NUJ FCT Council held on Saturday, 12th April 2025.

Delegates at the meeting lamented the poor condition of the facility currently used for Congresses, describing it as unfit for a professional body of journalists operating within the nation’s capital

These were contained in a communiqué signed by the Chairman, Communiqué Committee,  Odigie Ehidiamen Kelvin and two members,Kehinde Ayanfe and, Ebriku John.

Congress called on the Minister, fondly referred to as Mr Project for his visible development strides across the FCT, to extend similar attention to the NUJ FCT Council Secretariat.

The Union also appealed to him to come to its aid in the completion of the long-delayed NUJ Pentagon, a building envisioned to serve as a landmark edifice for journalists in Abuja.

“The current state of our secretariat is appalling. We are earnestly appealing to the Honourable Minister to undertake a facility tour and see for himself the infrastructural decay we contend with. We believe that under his leadership, the Secretariat and Pentagon project can finally be transformed into a lasting legacy,” the Congress resolved.

In addition to the infrastructure concerns, the NUJ FCT Council used the platform to draw attention to broader socio-economic issues confronting residents of the capital and Nigerians at large.

Congress decried the persistent power outages across the FCT, attributing the problem to the inefficiencies of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC). It warned that the poor electricity supply was stifling productivity and negatively impacting quality of life.

Similarly, members criticised the rising cost of telecommunications and internet data, describing it as a heavy financial burden on citizens. They urged the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to investigate billing practices and introduce measures that ensure affordability and consumer protection.

The Congress also expressed grave concern over the increasing rate of maternal mortality, which it linked to worsening economic conditions and inflation.

It called on the Federal Government to provide free maternal healthcare services, including pre-natal, ante-natal, and post-natal care, to alleviate the burden on expectant mothers and reduce preventable deaths.

In conclusion, the Congress reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the welfare of journalists and the general public, pledging continued engagement with relevant authorities to address these pressing challenges.

  • Kwara Garment Factory MD commends AbdulRazaq’s vision

Kwara Garment Factory MD commends AbdulRazaq’s vision

The Managing Director of the Kwara Garment Factory, Hajia Bukola Adedeji, has commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for visionary leadership and commitment to economic development, industrialisation and job creation in the state.

Speaking during a special feature on Radio Kwara, Midland 99.1 FM, Adedeji described the Kwara Garment Factory as a flagship legacy project of Governor AbdulRazaq’s administration, purposefully established to boost the State’s internally generated revenue (IGR) and create sustainable employment opportunities, especially for women and youths.

“The factory stands today as a testament to Governor AbdulRazaq’s foresight and genuine passion for empowering the people of Kwara,” she stated. “Through his support, we have not only created a thriving manufacturing hub but also opened doors of opportunities for hundreds of Kwarans.”

She stated although the factory is yet to be officially commissioned, it has commenced full operations, employing over 245 trained workers, with plans to expand to 4,000 employees at full capacity.

She noted that the factory is poised to producing approximately 6,000 garments daily, thereby contributing significantly to the State’s economy.

Equipped with state-of-the-art machinery, including the Oshima Cutting Machine — the only one of its kind in West Africa — and advanced embroidery and direct printing machines, the Kwara Garment Factory is fast becoming a leading name in garment manufacturing both in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa.

The MD highlighted the impressive catalogue of projects successfully executed by the factory under Governor AbdulRazaq’s leadership, such as:high-quality sportswear for the Kwara contingent at the National Youth Games in Asaba, customized apparel for the Kwara Diocese 50th Anniversary, Chapel Secondary School, Quest College Ibadan; and the production of factory wears for TASCON, Ilorin.

Others include the production of over 25,000 tote bags for a major organisation in Abuja, souvenirs for the visit of the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, OON, premium uniforms for the Young Farmers Club and Women Agricultural Support Programme Initiative under the Renewed Hope Initiative.

She further announced that following the successful production of souvenirs for the First Lady’s visit, the factory secured an order from the Nigerian Air Force for aso-oke souvenir bags for the African Armed Forces Week. In addition, the Nigerian Police Trust Fund (NPTF) has expressed interest in partnering with the factory for the production of police uniforms after an impressive assessment of the facility.

Adedeji emphasised that the milestones are the direct results of the enabling environment created by the State government, adding that the administration’s support has positioned the factory to take full advantage of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) to expand its reach across Africa.

“We remain deeply grateful to His Excellency, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, for his visionary leadership and steadfast support. The Kwara Garment Factory is not just about garments; it is about transforming lives, driving industrialization, and building a legacy of prosperity for generations to come,” she concluded.

  • ACF to politicians: Face governance, it’s too early to campaign for 2027

ACF to politicians: Face governance, it’s too early to campaign for 2027

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has told politicians who are already campaigning for the 2027 general elections to stop, saying it is too early, considering the ranging hunger and socioeconomic hardship in the country that are not yet addressed.

In his remarks at the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting at its headquarters in Kaduna on Thursday, the ACF chairman, Mamman Mike Osuman SAN urged political leaders to address the needs of the people ahead of the next general elections rather than to be too committed to an election campaign whose time has not come.

According to the ACF Chairman, “Individual utterances and media exposés relating to the upcoming 2027 elections are already hitting the airwaves. This momentum, in my humble view, should take the back burner while emphasis should be earnestly placed on governance that will truly address the biting needs of our people who are daily subjected to sufferings as a result of brigandage, terrorism, kidnapping, mass murders, hunger, and diseases.

“While genuine desires to serve are welcome, concerted efforts that prioritize the safety and well-being of Nigerians should be uppermost in the minds of our leaders. Notwithstanding our political allegiance to individual politicians, groups, or ideologies.

“I humbly urge that we, as ACF, should in practical terms manifest and espouse ourselves as beacons of hope for our people by altruistically, openly and courageously preaching truth to power in the manner done by the late Martin Luther King Jr., Indira Gandhi and Nelson Mandela”. Osuman said.

ACF also expressed bitterness over recent killings in some parts of Northern region, saying, “Only recently, we were rudely astounded with the sad news of the resurgence of the debilitating terror attacks and loss of lives and property in Bokkos – Plateau State, the gruesome assassination of northerners in Uromi, Edo State and the resurgence of Boko Haram in Borno State. The resurgence of these monstrous, blood-thirsty psychopaths is an issue of grave concern to us all in ACF.

“Only a few days ago, I watched the Governors of both Plateau and Borno States on Television lament about the phenomenal harm occasioned on their citizens. While the cruel, murderous attacks on the Bokkos peasant farmers and peace-loving petty traders are said to be undergoing investigations, the recent resumption of Boko Haram merchants of evil on families in the North East lacks a conceivable explanation, bearing in mind the federal government’s assurance of the region’s return to normalcy.

“ACF’s pain and concern are aggravating as it derives from our knowledge of the recent horrendous flood that destroyed lives and property in Maiduguri town and its environs.

“It is my hope that ACF’s recently constituted Security Committee will, before long, assist ACF in appreciating the raison d’être of the variant criminal attacks on our region. These insecurities have substantially interfered with the peaceful coexistence of our people. Farm lands are evacuated, schools are closed, petty trading is discontinued, and livelihood is impaired. The ugly situations have been accentuated by recession, high cost of living, poor health care, and the high cost of transportation.

The Forum equally expressed worry about the land dispute between Kogi State and Enugu State and called on the chairman of the National Boundary Commission (NBC), the Vice President, Shettima, to direct the Commission to complete its assignments by erecting appropriate pillars demarcating the exact State Boundary between Enugu and Kogi

“The Ette Community is an integral part of the North. It is in Kogi State, peopled by highly educated, skilled, and peace-loving people. The determination by Enugu State to illegally grab a portion of Ette land where rich mineral deposits abound has, for years, been resisted by our Ette brothers and sisters.

“Notwithstanding the favourable official records in favour of the fact that the contested borderline land belongs to the Ette Community, Enugu State has not only attacked, conflagrated and killed our people on the land but has sustained inordinate pressure towards annexing the land.

“ACF is reaching out to the Director General (DG) National Boundary Commission and the Director in charge of inter-State Boundaries of the commission to expedite action on erecting appropriate pillars to demarcate the boundary of the two States”, the ACF Chairman said.

  • We will ensure Nigerians get value for their money, Reps panel pledges

We will ensure Nigerians get value for their money, Reps panel pledges

Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Ancillary Matters, Hon Fred Agbedi, has pledged to ensure Nigerians get value for their money by making sure projects for the benefit of the people meet the required standard and delivered timely.

Agbedi said this when he led members of the Committee on oversight of three road projects in the FCT handled by the Satellite Towns Development Department (STDD) of the FCT.

Speaking at the site of one the projects, the upgrading of the War College Army Checkpoint and other ancillary roads in Ushafa, Bwari Area Council, Agbedi said the Committee would work hard to ensure service is delivered to the people.

He said the Committee also took note of the challenges of the projects and would ensure they are addressed so the roads can meet the completion date of May this year.

“Work is in progress. The ministry has come with quite a good service delivery to the people of Ushafa and neighbouring communities. This road will open up the entire area and we can see that the contractor is doing his best. What we are here for is to ensure that there’s value for money as appropriated.

“And then we’re also encouraging the contractor to ensure that he keeps the contract terms and ensures that a quality project is delivered.

“And at this point that we have come to see, we are happy that he’s working hard, but he has to do more based on what he said that this road is targeted to be commissioned sometime in May this year on the second anniversary of Mr President.

“We as parliament, we are ready to work with the ministry to ensure that funds are made available, and appropriated to

give service, deliver service to our people. I think that the road is impressive and we believe that the contractor will do his best to give quality roads to our people.

“Of course, there is no project that as you go to supervise you see everything perfect. There are issues that we have raised. They have also raised issues as to the challenges they have, structures and all that need to be removed. And so we think that between now and completion, we are still going to come back again.

“We will also interface with the STDD to ensure that all those circumstances that impede the progress of work are dealt with. We have also identified some hazardous situations, particularly when you do a drainage that has some reduced element of safety.

“It is possible that the lives of road users could also be endangered, particularly pedestrians along the walkway that is beside the drainage. And so we have said all that should be taken into consideration,” the Committee Chairman said.

Coordinator of the STDD, Abdulkadir Kiflu, lauded the Committee for its commitment to ensuring quality life for Nigerians.

He promised that all the projects would be delivered within the deadline in good quality.

Also as the Committee’s oversight took them to Pai in Kwali Area Council, the Committee raised concerns over engineering designs of some road intervention projects in the area.

The Committee, during its oversight visit to the 15 kilometre A2-Pai road, and the 11 kilometre Yangoji-Sukuku road, all in the Kwali Area Council of the FCT, being executed by the STDD.

Resident Engineer of the STDD, Engr. Ibrahim Isa Kangiwa had informed the committee that the design of the A2-Pai road was jointly done by the department’s experts and those of the contractor; ZEBERCED Construction Limited,.

He explained further that the agreement was for a one-year maintenance, after which the Area Councils will take over.

He also noted that the project estimated at N30 billion total cost will have solar powered street lights installed.

The committee was however not satisfied with oral explanations on the engineering design, insisting that the agency supply the paper work to its secretariat by next Monday.

It also expressed fears on the safety of the planned street lights, as substantial portions of the 15-kilometre road were yet unoccupied.

Addressing journalists, after Agbedi said “We’ve been on oversight since yesterday, oversighting the FCT Satellite Towns Development Department’s projects. We have seen a number of roads, today we started from the Pai road and now we are at Sukuku, and I think development has gotten closer to our people.

“We will say that they have done well, the leaders of the ministry have done well. No one is perfect but we need to get certain things done right so that we should be able to know budget subheads, costs of projects, extensive design of projects and then the implementation.

“Because if you don’t have an extensive design of a project, you wouldn’t know to the extent which a contractor is completing the project . These observations, we will take home as a committee and later interface with the ministry of the FCT and the department to make sure that we render good services to the people of the FCT.”

  • Plateau, NRC sign MoU to revive Jos–Kuru rail corridor

Plateau, NRC sign MoU to revive Jos–Kuru rail corridor

In a landmark step to revamp Nigeria’s rail infrastructure and improve regional connectivity, the Plateau State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) to restore and operate the historic Jos–Kuru rail corridor.

The MoU was signed at the NRC headquarters in Lagos by Plateau State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Jatau Davou, and NRC Managing Director, Dr. Kayode Opeifa.

According to a statement issued by The NRC media team, the agreement represents a major milestone in efforts to stimulate economic growth, reduce transportation costs, and enhance mobility within Plateau State and its surrounding regions.

At the official signing ceremony, Davou expressed deep appreciation to the Honourable Minister of Transportation, Hon. Said Ahmed Alkali, and Dr. Opeifa for their steadfast support in pushing the project forward despite various hurdles.

“This is not just about rail transportation; it is about restoring hope and economic prosperity to our people,” Davou noted, adding that; “we appreciate the United Nations for debunking negative narratives about our dear state and reaffirming our commitment to national development.”

The Jos–Kuru line, a segment of the historic Kafanchan–Kuru route linking the National Western from Lagos to Kano and the Eastern line from PH to Maiduguri, will serve as a vital link between the Western and Eastern rail corridors.

It will connect local communities, support farmers and traders with efficient cargo movement, and ultimately drive down the cost and duration of travel within the state. While the service will initially operate on the existing narrow gauge, plans are underway to expand to modern standard gauge networks as part of a broader national railway modernisation programme.

In his remarks, Opeifa emphasized the importance of federal-state cooperation in infrastructure development, lauding the Plateau State government’s proactive role in partnering through the NRC-Railing with the States and the PSG Railway on the Plateau.

“This partnership demonstrates how government at all levels can collaborate beyond politics, to deliver tangible benefits to Nigerians.

We’re not just bringing trains; we’re bringing back dignity, economic empowerment, and national integration,” Opeifa added.

He also clarified that recent reports of railway coaches were being stolen were misinformed. “Those coaches were not stolen. They were redeployed to Plateau where they are now being put to productive use”.

The project is expected to generate jobs, stimulate local businesses, and offer new opportunities through train services.

He disclosed that the Minister of Transportation, Hon. Said Alkali, threw his full weight behind this project, reaffirming President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and pledging the full support of the federal government in ensuring that it delivered full dividends of rail services to the average Nigerians who badly needed these services.

“We will continue to rail across Nigeria—from Jos to Borno, from Aba to Port Harcourt, and everywhere in between. This is a new dawn for Nigerian rail.”

He said he looked forward to the commencement of commercial operation on the corridor anytime soon, in order to assure the people of the Plateau of the commitment of the federal government under the Tinubu administration to take rail transportation to all nooks and crannies of the country.

  • Onjeh urges Benue indigenes to unite against insecurity

Onjeh urges Benue indigenes to unite against insecurity

Former All Progressives Congress (APC) Benue South senatorial candidate Comrade Daniel Onjeh has urged residents and indigenes to unite against rising insecurity and support Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration.

Emphasizing that insecurity thrives in division, Onjeh urged the people of Benue, especially the Idomas, to remain steadfast in their support for the Alia administration.

In a statement at the weekend, Onjeh expressed deep concern over the recent escalation of violent crimes, including kidnappings and killings, across Benue communities.

He described the attacks as well-coordinated operations involving both external criminal elements and local collaborators.

Onjeh, a former Chairman of the Governing Board of the Project Development Institute (PRODA) Enugu, cited what he described as the disturbing evidence of collusion between marauding herdsmen and unscrupulous elements within Benue communities.

“The testimony of a recent kidnapping victim reveals the chilling reality: ‘his abductors were a mix of Fulani herdsmen and Idoma youths who brazenly seized him from his home in front of his family,” he stated.

The APC stalwart pointed to the brutal murder of retired Immigration Comptroller Akatu Onche in Otukpo as particularly troubling.

“This respected community leader was killed shortly after courageously urging his people to defend themselves against insecurity. We must ask: why was he specifically targeted? Who betrayed him?” he questioned, suggesting the likelihood of informants within communities working with networks of criminal herdsmen.

He lamented the fact that despite the Idoma people accommodating herdsmen in their communities for decades, the herdsmen perpetrate heinous crimes against their kind host.

“We least expect this from them,” he stated. “It’s akin to welcoming a guest, providing shelter, and having them betray your hospitality by setting your house ablaze,” he stated.

He cautioned the people of Benue State not to rush to hasty conclusions and apportion blame without thoroughly studying the nature and dimensions of the security situation in the state.

Read Also: Tinubu’s vision driving towards prosperity, says Shettima

“The issue is multidimensional and multifaceted. Though each community affected by this menace across the nation has its own peculiarities, there is a general trend. Some weeks ago in Manchok (Kaura LGA of Kaduna), two young men were arrested for conspiring with bandits to kidnap their kinsmen, a crime they confessed they committed. These collaborators and informants abound in many communities across the country. It happens in Benue as well,” Onjeh stated.

He warned against pointing the searchlight on only criminal herdsmen and allowing their local collaborators to remain in the anonymity of darkness.

Doing so, he warned, would embolden these miscreants to continue terrorizing their communities without fear of retribution.

“If full attention is given to local collaborators and efforts made to fish them out of the community, they will know society is aware of their treachery. This knowledge, and the fear that they will not be spared when they are caught, will drive them into retracing their steps, amending their evil ways, and becoming law-abiding members of their communities,” Onjeh said.

Further dissecting insecurity in Benue State, especially in Idoma land, Onjeh stated: “Now that these herdsmen know they can be easily identified when they mix with the community, it appears they have resorted to attacking through proxies. The pervasive poverty in the land enables them to easily entice local miscreants into becoming their informants for the promise of a cut of the ransom they would extort from the families of the people they kidnap.”

He urged the Idoma nation to rise up and speak against the evil that has befallen its land, warning that failure to do so could cause the fall of Otukpo, the sociopolitical nerve centre of Idoma land, which is currently targeted by criminal kidnappers.

He applauded Governor Alia’s tireless, behind-the-scenes work with federal security agencies and other stakeholders to dismantle criminal networks in the state, including marauding herdsmen and their local collaborators.

Onjeh, an advocate for good governance and an opinion leader who has consistently championed security and development issues in his state, urged Benue residents to enhance community vigilance, stating “Security begins with us. We must establish robust neighbourhood watch systems and promptly report suspicious activities.”

He implored the people of Benue to reject divisive politics. He also called all residents of Benue State to support the efforts of the Alia administration to bring peace and development to the state.

“Governor Alia needs the people’s backing to implement comprehensive security solutions. This is not the time for destructive criticism and ill-informed street protests that do more harm than good,” he said.

  • Plateau killings: ACF calls for state of emergency on vulnerable, banditry-prone communities

Plateau killings: ACF calls for state of emergency on vulnerable, banditry-prone communities

…as Northern CAN, AYCF seek end to senseless killings, compensation for victims families

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has condemned the renewed wave of killings in Plateau State, urging the Federal Government to declare a state of security emergency in vulnerable and banditry-ravaged communities across Northern Nigeria and beyond.

In a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Prof. Tukur Muhammad Baba, the ACF expressed deep sorrow over the March 28th attacks on defenceless communities in Plateau, which led to the tragic loss of scores of lives, including children.

“The ACF is ineffably saddened at the disheartening and frightening attacks by terror gangs, which have added to the already grim toll of deaths, injuries, and destruction suffered by communities in recent years,” the statement read.

The forum extended condolences to the affected communities, the government and people of Plateau State, and prayed for the souls of the deceased and quick recovery for the injured.

The ACF also drew attention to what it described as a continued deterioration of security in Arewa and other parts of the country, stressing that every fresh attack is one too many.

Similarly, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern states and Abuja, along with the Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF), condemned the violence and called for immediate compensation for victims’ families and urgent steps to end what they described as senseless killings in the region.

“Clearly, the people are in great pains, with their situation compounded by existential economic challenges. The killing spree on the Plateau must be stopped immediately and peace must return to the State,” it said.

    The Forum however called on the federal government to “declare a state of security emergency on vulnerable and banditry-prone communities and to initiate effective early-warning and early-response strategies that incorporate the participation of community members;

“To intensify efforts in actionable intelligence gathering, processing and deployment by relevant all security agencies so as to establish the immediate and remote causes of the latest skirmishes, investigate, identify, arrest and prosecute perpetrators and enablers of the attacks.”

It also called in the Federal Government to fully compensate families of the victims for the lives lost and extend relief to those injured.

    “FGN and Plateau State Government to empower community leaders, elders, clergy, traditional leaders, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to embark on community dialogue for conflict resolution, reconciliation and cooperation. All must intensify conflict resolution efforts;

“citizens should avail the security agencies with credible information on the activities of insurgents and criminals; and

“Members of the National Assembly to do more to hold the FGN and the National Security Agencies to account and to demand concrete evidence of a firm resolve to exterminate the current terror on citizens,” ACF asked.

While, reiterating its unalloyed support for the Federal, the Plateau State Government and all National Security Agencies in the fight against insecurity in Nigeria, ACF called on all to up the ante in the fight against threats to the wellbeing of all Nigerian citizens.

In its own statement signed by its Chairman, Rev John John Hayab, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19-Northern states and the FCT expressed deep sorrow and condolences to the Governor of Plateau State, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, and the entire people of the State over the tragic and ‘senseless’ killings of innocent citizens in Bokkos Local Government Area.

Rev. Hayab said “We are deeply pained by the latest wave of violence that has claimed the lives of over 50 persons across communities such as Mangor, Tamiso, Daffo, Manguna, Hurti, and Tadai. This pattern of carnage, sadly becoming a recurring decimal in Plateau and other parts of Northern Nigeria, is not only barbaric but also an indictment on our collective humanity.

“Northern CAN condemns, in the strongest possible terms, this strange and evil culture of killing that is fast gaining roots in our society. It is heartbreaking that people now hide under the cover of religion or tribal sentiments to commit atrocities against fellow human beings. The value for human life in our society has dangerously diminished and that is completely unacceptable,” he said.

The Northern CAN Chairman however called on the security agencies to act swiftly, professionally and without bias and apprehend the perpetrators of the heinous crimes, adding that, justice must not only be served but must be seen to be served by all.

Hayab added that, the continued cycle of bloodshed and mass burials must be broken through decisive action, improved intelligence, and proactive security presence in vulnerable communities.

“We equally call on all Nigerians irrespective of religion, ethnicity, or political leaning to unite against this madness. This is not just a Plateau problem; it is a national tragedy. Religious leaders, traditional institutions, and community stakeholders must reinforce the message of peace, coexistence, and collective responsibility.

“Once again, we say: Enough is Enough. Nigeria must not be a land where blood flows more than water,” he said.

In a related development, Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) condemned the recent brutal killings of innocent citizens, describing it an act of senseless violence that has left numerous lives lost and entire communities devastated.

AYCF President-General, Alhaji Yerima Shettima said, the tragic incident is not only a profound violation of human rights but also a stark reminder of the escalating insecurity in various parts of Nigeria.

According to AYCF President-General, the perpetrators of the heinous acts must be brought to justice, just as it is imperative that the government takes immediate and decisive action to prevent further bloodshed.

“We at AYCF express our deepest sympathy to the families of the victims and the affected communities who have suffered irreparable losses. The pain and trauma caused by such violence cannot be understated, and it is a reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive security reforms.

“Furthermore, in the wake of this tragedy, we call for adequate compensation to be provided to the victims’ families. The loss of life, property, and livelihood cannot be compensated fully, but financial support is essential for the survivors to rebuild their lives,” he said.

AYCF however called on the government to establish a dedicated funding to support the victims, including medical aid, psychological support, and financial compensation for the families who have lost loved ones.

It argued, “This is not just a call for justice; it is a call for compassion, accountability, and a collective commitment to ensuring that such atrocities do not continue to plague our nation.

“We stand in solidarity with the people of Plateau State and all victims of violence, and we demand action that prioritizes the safety and dignity of every Nigerian citizen. AYCF commiserated with the Governor of Plateau State, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, and the entire people of the state over what it described as yet another senseless bloodshed,” AYCF said.

Wade into killings, unrest in Benue, group appeals to Tinubu

The Coalition for Good Governance and Transparency in Nigeria (CGGTN) has raised the alarm over what it described as politically motivated killings in Benue State, urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene urgently.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Sunday, the coalition’s leader, Comrade Igwe Ude-Umanta, decried the rising wave of violence in the state, particularly following the recent judgment of the Benue State Local Government Election Tribunal in favour of elected councillors from the seven LGAs in Benue North West Senatorial District.

The group, in partnership with the Advocates of Social Justice (ASJ), alleged that certain National Assembly members—described as “enemies of Benue State”—are behind the unrest.

They called on President Tinubu to act swiftly to neutralize what they termed “powers in Abuja backing civil unrest” in the state, lamenting that individuals elected to serve the people are instead allegedly fueling chaos for political gain.

“What will the people gain if they continue to loose their loved ones because you want a state of emergency declared in your own State. These rascals must be stopped. Do they think that Nigerians would fold their arms and watch these few elements pull down the Country?” they queried.

The group then called on the security agencies to immediately go after the serial killers in Benue state.

Expressing concern at the rising wave of killings in the state, the group alleged that street and campus cults are being used to perpetuate evil and in return blamed the crisis on the State Governo, accusing him of failing to provide security even when he does not have control over security apparatus in the state.

The group also accused some disgruntled persons in the State of being the mastermind of a plan to cause chaos and destabilised the state.

They claimed to have unearthed plans by these elements to mobilise more than 20,000 people for a protest march in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja in a bid to cause another chaos in the country.

According to Ude-Umanta, “We urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to watch his back as the people in question are around the government and they have access to funds and could do anything just to prove a point.

“Mr President sir, your enemies are within you but you shall overcome all animosity. They are people who have access to security and huge stolen funds that could be used against anyone or authority. Mr. President must know that his government is being attacked by the same people he appointed into sensitive positions, in the guise of getting at the Executive Governor of Benue State, the working governor.

“We know and they know, that the only thing they could do is to cause civil unrest and cause more death and hardship on Benue communities and Nigeria at large just to give the government a bad image. The Inspector General of Police must not take this information for granted as the days are near. The Police must be seen working just like the Honourable Chief Justice of Nigeria is working.”
