AbdulRazaq begins assessment tours to large rice/maize farms in Edu, Patigi, Kaiama, others

Kwara Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq carried out extensive tour of rice plantations in communities in Edu and Patigi local government areas at the weekend to assess the impacts of seedlings, fertilisers, and other inputs they recently received from the state government.

The Governor was represented on the tour by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Toyosi Thomas-Adebayo, who was accompanied by Director of Personnel Finance and Supply in the Ministry Mayaki Babadzuko Ma’adu.

The visit to Edu and Patigi will be followed by another ‘feedback mission’ to Kaiama and other parts of the state to inspect maize and soya beans farmlands, among others.

Last week, the Governor personally inspected the Kwara Youths Farm in Malete (Moro LG), where at least 1500 hectares of land are being cultivated for soyabeans production this farming season.

The government had recently launched the distribution of seedlings, fertilizers, and other farm inputs to support 10,000 farmers across the sixteen local governments. It is to ensure bumper harvest and promote food security, the Governor had said.

Speaking to reporters in Edu on Saturday, the Governor said: “Today, we are here for a monitoring exercise to meet (rice) farmers, who benefitted from the government’s interventions, and check their farms to make sure that what they have been given were put to use. That is the main purpose of the exercise.

“One of the things we do as a government to improve food security is to improve productivity. One of the ways we do that is to give timely and quality inputs to our farmers.”

The rice farms visited were in Lafiagi Ward 1 and 2 of Edu; Lade, Sakpefu-lade, Sheshi and Rogun in Kpada Ward 2 of Patigi local government.

At least 20,000 hectares of land are being cultivated for rice production in the areas covered, according to locals.

AbdulRazaq expressed satisfaction with the happenings on the farms and commended the farmers for their commitment to the food security drive of the government.

“I am very happy about what I have seen. Clearly, the farmers have put to use what they got. We have been able to motivate our farmers to do more. We also have a number of farmers waiting to get support from the government and they will get in due course,” he added.

“We have carried out three interventions this year. We started with free input to 3,400 rice farmers and we did another one under the NG-CARES FADAMA for 600,000 farmers which included assets like boats for fishermen and the recently concluded intervention (Agro chemicals, fertilizers and seeds for 10,000 farmers). Even with all these, we still have more farmers seeking the support of the state government. So, we are going to support more farmers.”

Most of the farmers, who spoke with reporters, took turns to eulogise the Governor’s support to boost farming activities in Edu and Patigi local governments of the state, and solicited for more.

Bala Sa’adu from Lade Community said farmers under Dukulade Irrigation Scheme have benefitted immensely from the present administration, particularly with the regular provision of farm inputs and desilting of blocked canals, where they source water for their farms.

“About two years ago, when the entire canal was filled up with sand, we appealed to the Governor to help us desilt it. The government supported us with about N7million to rectify the problem. And everybody had a bumper harvest last year. The canal served us so well until recently that it was blocked again,” he said.

“The government has also provided us with fertilizers, chemicals, and rice seeds free of charge. We all know how much a bag of fertilizer costs now. So, all these interventions are very commendable because it will reduce the cost of production.”

Sa’adu requested the government to also assist in fixing their blocked canal.

Alhaji Muhammad, Secretary of Sakpefu community who praised the government for various support for rice farmers, appealed for an extension of their farmland to increase their yields.

Muhammadu Kudu Yakub, who spoke for rice farmers in Lafiagi, appreciated the government’s support which he said has assisted their farming activities a lot.

“We are predominantly farmers from the Lafiagi community. We are into crop production such as rice, maize, groundnuts, beans, potatoes, and cassava. We really thank the government for every support to strengthen our occupation. It has really assisted us. But it has not gone round. We need more support, especially pumping machines so that we can access adequate water to improve our production,” he said.

The Ministry had earlier visited other local government areas on the same mission, including Asa and Ilorin East.

Onjeh, a former Chairman of the Governing Board of PRODA Enugu, urged the new chairman of BSIEC to build on this momentum and work tirelessly to ensure that the commission discharges its duties with integrity, professionalism, and impartiality.

  • No more protests in Northern Nigeria – Arewa Youth Groups

No more protests in Northern Nigeria – Arewa Youth Groups

Some Arewa youth groups have announced a ban on all forms of protests in Northern Nigeria for the next year.

A statement signed by Comrade Mustapha Alkali said the decision was made after an assessment of the events that unfolded on August 1 during the protests against the Federal Government.

According to the groups, the protests were hijacked by criminal elements who used the opportunity to wreak havoc on communities in the North.

The groups condemned the violence, arson, and criminal activities that took place during the protests, stating that they were unacceptable and threatened the fabric of society.

According to Alkali, the actions of those behind the protests are a clear indication that they want to destroy the North, adding that “they have no regard for our values, our culture, and our way of life” and have already “caused significant economic losses to the people, and we cannot afford to continue on this path.”

He added: “After careful assessment of the events that unfolded on August 1 during the protests against the Federal Government, we have resolved to place a ban on all forms of protests in Northern Nigeria for the next year.

“This decision was not taken lightly, but it has become necessary to protect the interests and well-being of our people. The events of August 1, were a clear indication that those behind the protests had ulterior motives that were detrimental to the North. The level of violence, arson, and criminal activities that took place during the protests were unprecedented and unacceptable.

“We condemn in the strongest terms the destruction of properties, the attack on innocent citizens, and the disruption of peace and order in our region. These actions are not only unhelpful but also threaten the very fabric of our society.

“The protests were characterized by wanton destruction of public and private properties, looting, and maiming of innocent citizens. This is not what we expect from a peaceful protest.

“Furthermore, the protests were hijacked by criminal elements who used the opportunity to wreak havoc on our communities. We cannot fold our arms and watch as our region is being destroyed by those who do not have our interests at heart.

“The protests have also caused significant economic losses to our people, and we cannot afford to continue on this path. We urge our youths to be vigilant and not allow themselves to be used as tools for destruction.

“The actions of those behind the protests are a clear indication that they want to destroy the North. They have no regard for our values, our culture, and our way of life. We will not stand idly by while our region is being destroyed. We will work with the security agencies to ensure that those who breach the peace are brought to justice.”

The Arewa youth groups also commended the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, and the Minister of Agriculture and Sanitation, Prof Joseph Utsev, for their stance against violence and their commitment to maintaining peace and order in the North.

“Their leadership and vision are what our region needs at this critical time. They have shown that they are committed to the well-being of our people, and we urge them to continue on this path,” the statement added.

“The efforts of the Ministers ensured that the protests did not get out of hand, preventing further destruction and loss of life. We urge them to continue to work tirelessly to ensure that our region is safe and secure.”

The groups, however, warned troublemakers to stay away from the North and declared their support for President Bola Tinubu and his administration.

Alkali said: “We will not tolerate any form of violence or destruction in our region. We will work with the security agencies to ensure that those who breach the peace are brought to justice. We will not allow our region to be destroyed by those who do not have our interests at heart.

“Finally, we declare our support for President Bola Tinubu and his administration. We believe in his vision for a united and prosperous Nigeria, and we will work with him to achieve this goal. We urge all our members and supporters to remain calm and peaceful, and to work towards building a better future for our region and our country.”

Yari urges Zamfara residents to avoid nationwide protests

Senator Abdulaziz Yari (Zamfara West) has appealed to residents of the State not to join the nationwide protests.

He spoke on Wednesday to supporters drawn from the 14 local government councils of Zamfara and neighbouring States.

In his speech, he underscored the commitment of northern senators to the welfare of the people and the development of various sectors such as agriculture, industry, and public infrastructure. He emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence and the resolution of conflicts through dialogue and cooperation.

He warned against the dangers of participating in protests that could potentially lead to violence and chaos, citing examples from other countries where similar actions had dire consequences.

He warned against succumbing to the influence of shadowy actors seeking to sow discord and destabilize the country for their own gain. Yari urged the people to exercise restraint, engage with the government constructively, and avoid actions that could lead to further conflict and unrest.

The Senator reminded the crowd of the need to trust in the government and to avoid unnecessary confrontations that could escalate into wider conflicts.

He cautioned against falling prey to divisive agendas and urged the people to remain vigilant against the forces that seek to destabilize the nation. Yari highlighted the need for strategic planning and thoughtful consideration in addressing challenges, rather than resorting to hasty and potentially damaging actions.

The senator’s message struck a chord with the crowd, who dispersed with a sense of reassurance and unity.

Yari’s call for patience, cooperation, and discernment resonated with the audience, reminding them of the importance of safeguarding the nation’s stability and future. His words served as a timely reminder of the dangers of blindly following divisive agendas and the need to remain vigilant against external forces seeking to exploit internal tensions.

Salihu Sulaiman, Chairman of the Northern Awareness Network (NAN), commended Senator Yari for his leadership in persuading the people of Zamfara State to distance themselves from the protest.

Sulaiman, in a statement, noted that Senator Yari’s call for the people to trust in the government, exercise restraint, and avoid unnecessary confrontations resonated with the massive crowd gathered in Gusau. His message of patience, cooperation, and unity left the crowd with a sense of reassurance and a reminder of the importance of safeguarding the nation’s stability and future.

“Leaders like Senator Abdulaziz Yari play a crucial role in guiding the way forward and fostering a spirit of unity and resilience among the people. • Senator Plang confident of better future for Nigerians

Senator Plang confident of better future for Nigerians

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Labour, Employment, and Productivity, Senator Diket Plang, has expressed confidence in the administration to reposition the country for the good of citizens.

Plang in a statement in Abuja said the president and his team are not resting on their oars as it was working hard towards this objective.

“The President and his are working towards repositioning the country and making life better for ordinary Nigerians.

“We also have to take cognizance of the fact that the president took over amidst a mounting economic downturn, which requires systemic reform and understanding of the people.

“Mr President is gradually fixing things; the processes have started, and he is not unmindful of the hardship in the country, hence the palliatives being rolled out to cushion the hardship.

“The president needs understanding, not protest. Protest cannot fix the challenges; it can only aggravate the problems facing the country.

“Let’s cooperate with our leaders, especially the president, governors, and those elected at various levels. They need our prayers and understanding at this crucial moment.

“We have no other country. We must be united in tackling the prevailing economic hardship in the country. We shouldn’t indulge in any act that will worsen the situation,” he said.

Senator representing Plateau Central Senatorial District of Plateau State urged the youths behind the planned protest to shelve the idea.

He said though people have a right to protest, any attempt to embark on such might disrupt the fragile peace being experienced at the moment.

He added there is the likelihood of it being hijacked by some undesirable elements to foment trouble.

Plang urged youths to listen to the voice of reason and appeals by various leaders, and embrace dialogue as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu meant well for Nigeria.

Senator Plang recently rolled out some palliative measures, such as the distribution of 10 trucks of fertilisers to boost agriculture towards food sufficiency.

He also embarked on empowerment programmes such distribution of sewing machines, grinding machines, distribution of several bags of assorted grains and training, perimeter fencing, solar lighting of public schools, and sinking of several boreholes, among others, to empower people in his constituency.

  • Kano holds solidarity rally against planned nationwide protest

Kano holds solidarity rally against planned nationwide protest

Hundreds of Kano residents on Wednesday, July 31, held a peaceful solidarity rally against the planned nationwide protest.

The rally, held at the vast premises of Meena Event Centre, was organised by the Ja’oji Organisation in support of President Bola Tinubu, for the Renewed Hope Agenda of his administration.

Nasiru Bala Aminu, a member of the Governing Council, Federal College of Education, Patiskum, who sensitised the gathering on the dangers of protests, said there was a hidden agenda to the planned protest because there are no clear-cut organisers.

“We totally reject it. We are not supporting any protest at this critical period of national development and cohesion.

“While registering worries about particular policies of any government is democratic, planning to cause a crisis of any nature, under whatever name should be condemned by right-thinking citizens,” Aminu said.

He reminded us that the many hardships being experienced in the country did not start with the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

“While acknowledging the hardship being faced by Nigerians, President Tinubu assured adjustments in some of his administration’s policies. As a listening leader, President Tinubu assured Nigerians that things would change for the better.

“On behalf of all the people who gathered here, particularly our mothers and sisters, women, we are not supporting any protest.

“I met and discussed with many women groups on this planned protest. Their message is very clear, that, they are not part of it, they don’t support it and they warned their children not to support it. They need peace in Nigeria at any cost,” he said.

Aminu explained that some African countries, including Libya (in 2011), Somalia (1991), DR Congo (1996), and Sudan (2020), among others, are still in crisis because of similar protests that were hijacked by hoodlums and unpatriotic elements.

While calling for patience, Aminu explained that since Nigerians made their worries known, President Tinubu has been meeting with stakeholders of the Nigerian project to chart a new course for all-inclusive national development.

He added: “Nigeria is the only country we have. As such we must all join hands together to promote its unity and peaceful coexistence.”

  • Abdulrazaq’s achievements breathtaking:, says Progressive Governors’ Forum

Abdulrazaq’s achievements breathtaking:, says Progressive Governors’ Forum

Kwara Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq is a star progressive Governor in Nigeria whose excellent performances in many key sectors are amazingly breathtaking, Director General of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) Folorunsho Aluko said at the weekend.

Aluko, who led a five-person media team of the Forum on a two-day working visit to the State, said he could not believe that Kwara has achieved so much under AbdulRazaq, including in the areas of physical infrastructure and social support programme, civil service welfare, youth development, gender inclusion, agriculture and sports.

Aluko said they visited the State to inspect and document legacy projects of the administration, as they have also been doing to other APC-controlled states, noting it is easy to forget good legacies when they are not archived.

“I came to Kwara State with my team on a mission. On getting here, I am proud. The signature projects of His Excellency AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the Governor of Kwara State, are breathtaking. From the social support programme, infrastructure, civil service welfare, youth, gender empowerment, business, innovation and technology, to sports, we are really impressed with what we saw,” he told reporters on Friday after concluding the facility tour in the capital city.

“In terms of sports specifically, we saw the squash court that has ten courts identifiable by different colours and that accommodate both the youth and old, even those with special needs. This is the first of its kind in Nigeria to have ten courts domiciled within the same arena.

“The table tennis arena is also outstanding. This is also one of the best you can find anywhere in Nigeria…. The massive renovation of the main bowl and the indoor sports hall is also very wonderful.

“We have also visited the garment factory, innovation hub, visuals arts centre, film factory, and others. On the whole, I would tell you that no one would have believed that Kwara State has been able to achieve these in the last five years.”

The delegation paid courtesy visits to Government House and some other offices, where they got briefings on some of the legacy projects of the administration, ahead of touring some of their locations on Friday for firsthand information.

Some of the projects visited include the Garment factory; Ilorin International Conference Centre; Innovation Hub; under remodeling Kwara Hotel; 12-storey ultramodern Revenue House; Centre for Contemporary Arts and Films; Sugar film factory; the Squash Court which is located inside the State Stadium Complex; and Flower Garden; among others.

They were variously received by the Special Adviser and Counsellor to the Governor Alhaji Sa’adu Salau; Special Adviser on Media, Bashir Adigun; Commissioner for Communication Bola Olukoju; Commissioner for Business, Innovation and Technology Damilola Yusuf-Adelodun; Commissioner for Works and Transport Engr. Abdulquawiy Olododo; Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Oloruntoyosi Thomas; and Executive Chairman, Kwara State Sports Commission Coach Bola Magaji; and the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor Rafiu Ajakaye.

Aluko said their visit also serves to checkmate negative reporting, which he noted undermines the positives in the country, especially in APC controlled states.

He said it was unfair that negatives are allowed to dominate the media space, thereby discrediting many outstanding public officers in the society.

He said they will continue to utilize their publications — the PGF Weekly Pulse, PGF Monthly e-bulletin, and the newly-launched Legacy Documentation and Preservation Initiative — as fundamental tools to achieve their objectives.

He commended AbdulRazaq on his 10-year Agriculture Transformation Plan that focuses on promoting food security through support for farmers and better approaches in addressing the farmers-herders conflict across agrarian communities.

“I would like to advise politicians to always be prepared and come into power with enough knowledge and experience like we have in the Governor of Kwara state. And I won’t tell you lies: Governor Abdulrazaq and other progressive governors are a blessing to Nigeria,” he said.

“Like I said, all the progressive governors are actually performing governors. But with our visit, we have seen again beyond what we imagine was happening. So, for Kwara State, we are convinced in terms of good governance and innovative and transformative leadership. The Governor of Kwara is qualified to be called a star progressive governor.”

Salau, for his part, thanked the media team for the visit and encouraged them to focus on producing their publications in at least three popular local languages for wider coverage.

“The things people look for in government are good governance, justice, fairness, transparency and accountability, and on several occasions, the Governor has received awards on all these qualities that people look for all over the World,” he said.

Olukoju said most of the projects the administration embarked upon were popular choices of the youth whose affairs she noted occupy the heart of the Governor.

She said the government often interfaces with the people to harvest the views and needs of the populace before formulating policies to impact their lives.

“The Governor is really concerned about youth development in the state. And going by statistics, Kwara has a teeming youth population, and we decided on how we can engage them productively,” she said.

Adigun said the Governor is doing a lot to strengthen key infrastructure, which he noted had mostly collapsed in the past.

Olododo said not less than 170 roads have been constructed by the administration within just one year of its second term, adding that the Governor also facilitated the construction of at least 284 kilometers of federal road projects across the state.

Yusuf-Adelodun said the government is building the capacity of at least three thousand youths in textile production through the garment factory, with a view to boosting Nigeria’s textile industry.

This training will allow different companies across the World to see Kwara as a destination for garment production, she said.

Agric Commissioner Oloruntoyosi said the government is offering massive support for farmers and building the capacity of agric extension agents for knowledge transfer to increase farm yields.

“For us in Kwara, the 10-year Agric Transformation Plan has been an important document and a roadmap to achieve food security. Yes, we are blessed with land, but it is not just about crop production. It is about how we can improve our productivity in quantity and quality,” she said.

Coach Magaji said Kwara is taking a lead in many sporting events, especially in Squash Court game and table tennis, adding that the state has produced national champions in the under-10, under-13, and under-16 categories in the last four years.

This is due to the support the sports sector enjoys from the government, Magaji said.

He said the administration has renovated a lot of sporting facilities in the state stadium, including the Olympic-size swimming pool, outdoor basketball, outdoor volleyball, and squash court, with eight of them additionally built.

He said the indoor sports hall is also being fixed in a way not seen before since it was constructed in the 1970s.
