Rights group slams amnesty call for Boko Haram, ISWAP

    •’Warns against ‘rewarding terrorism’

The International Society for Social Justice and Human Rights (ISSJHR) has condemned calls by some religious and community leaders in the North advocating amnesty for terrorist and bandit groups, including Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), describing such appeals as a “moral, legal and generational failure.”

In a statement, its Chancellor, Dr. Omenazu Jackson, said the organisation expressed grave concern over attempts to equate terrorist violence with the Niger Delta struggle for environmental and economic justice, insisting that the comparison is “morally indefensible, legally untenable and historically dishonest.”

ISSJHR noted that more than a decade of insurgency in the North has resulted in tens of thousands of civilian deaths, the displacement of millions, and the destruction of entire communities.

According to the group, churches, mosques, schools and markets have been targeted, leaving humanitarian and social scars across the region.

The organisation cited reports by international and local human rights bodies, including United Nations-affiliated agencies, documenting mass killings of civilians, widespread kidnappings of schoolchildren, systematic sexual violence, and forced displacement that has created one of Africa’s worst humanitarian crises.

“These atrocities have drawn global outrage and repeatedly placed Nigeria before the United Nations Security Council, the Human Rights Council and international humanitarian agencies,” the statement said.

Ex-FCTA director backs Kefas’ alignment with APC

A retired Director with the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Mukhtar Galadima, has described the alignment of Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a move that will bring more projects and dividends of democracy to the state.

Galadima made the statement at a briefing, where he described Kefas as a smart and dynamic leader who is focused on innovation and development for the people of Taraba State.

According to him, the governor’s decision to work with the Federal Government demonstrates that he has the interest of the people at heart and is determined to attract more development to the state.

The former director, who is aspiring to represent Wukari/Ibi Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, said his decision to contest was informed by the lack of participatory democracy in the constituency.

He noted that elected representatives must carry the people along in governance.

Galadima lamented that while other states were benefiting from constituency projects, Wukari/Ibi Federal Constituency had been left out.

  • Kaduna: Uba Sani commissions the longest road in 20 years

Kaduna: Uba Sani commissions the longest road in 20 years

Governor Uba Sani has commissioned the longest road that has been constructed in the last two decades, cutting across three local governments and linking more than 76 farming communities in Kaduna State.

He said that the road, which stretches from Igabi to Kajuru and Chikun local governments, includes a 130-metre bridge over the River Kaduna, which serves several rural communities.

The Governor said that the 35-kilometre asphaltic road linking Gadan Gayan through Gwaraji to Kujama Junction will transform mobility, agriculture, and rural economies in those communities.

Speaking at the commissioning on Monday, he described the project as a historic milestone in the state’s infrastructure development, adding that it reflects his administration’s inclusive and people-centred development model.

Governor Uba Sani recalled that when the project was flagged off in January 2024, his administration had pledged to deliver a durable and efficient transport corridor.

The governor maintained that ‘’through disciplined planning, professional execution, and collective commitment, that promise has been fulfilled.’’

He explained that the road provides an alternative route that reduces reliance on the often-congested Kaduna metropolis, thereby cutting travel time and transportation costs for commuters and traders.

“Emergency services will be able to respond faster, schoolchildren will reach their classrooms with greater ease, and families will enjoy improved access to healthcare, markets, and social services,” he noted.

The Governor also emphasized the road’s agricultural importance, stressing that agriculture remains the leading contributor to Kaduna State’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth.

“By traversing agriculturally productive rural communities across three local government areas, this road directly links farms to markets, aggregation centres, processing facilities, and urban consumption hubs,” he said, adding that it   would reduce post-harvest losses and strengthen agricultural value chains.”

Governor Uba Sani said early signs of economic revival are already visible along the corridor, with new filling stations, markets, and small businesses emerging. “This is the quiet but powerful multiplier effect of well-planned infrastructure,” he remarked.

The Governor said the project also addresses long-standing inequities in public investment, especially in Kajuru Local Government Area, one of the 12 Area Councils that had not benefited from a road project for more than 12 years.

“This prolonged neglect constrained economic activity, and that reality was unacceptable,” he said, pledging that his administration is ‘’reversing decades of under-investment.’’

The Governor explained that the commissioned road is part of a broader programme that includes 140 road projects, covering 1,335 kilometres across Kaduna State.

Governor Uba Sani said that 66 of the roads that his administration initiated have already been completed, while others are between 60 and 75 per cent completed.

  • Govs absent as NWDC holds inaugural Northwest Development Summit in Kaduna

Govs absent as NWDC holds inaugural Northwest Development Summit in Kaduna

    • Barau, Hussaini push coordinated rescue for troubled Northwest

The North West Development Commission (NWDC) yesterday  convened its first stakeholders’ development summit at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Conference Centre, Kaduna, bringing together federal actors, development partners and regional stakeholders to chart a coordinated development path for the zone.

But none of the seven governors from the North-West states attended the summit in person. The governors were represented variously by their deputies, Secretaries to State Governments and commissioners.

The absence drew concern from participants, including Dr. Hakeem Baba Ahmed, Protem Chairman of the Northern Reconciliation Group, who described the development as disappointing given the significance of the summit to the region’s future.

He said it was regrettable that no governor from the zone deemed it necessary to attend personally, noting that only representatives were present despite the strategic importance of the meeting.

According to him, the summit was designed to advance a coordinated, inclusive and sustainable development agenda for the North-West through legislative leadership, state political commitment, stakeholder collaboration and alignment of development interventions.

Baba Ahmed explained that the objectives included providing a high-level platform for dialogue among federal and state actors, development partners and other critical stakeholders on priority issues affecting the region.

He added that the forum was also intended to strengthen coordination between the National Assembly, state governments, the NWDC and relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in planning and implementing development initiatives.

The summit, he said, was equally aimed at supporting the operational readiness of the NWDC and enhancing the effective delivery of its mandate through shared commitments and improved coordination structures.

He noted that discussions at the forum focused on integrated and cross-sectoral approaches to tackling key challenges such as infrastructure deficit, insecurity, agriculture, climate resilience, human capital development and economic inclusion.

Encouraging private sector participation and development partner support in financing sustainable development projects, he added, was also a major focus of the summit.

Baba Ahmed further stated that the meeting was expected to produce a practical, action-oriented communiqué to guide policy alignment, legislative backing and coordinated implementation for sustainable outcomes in the region.

Describing Kaduna as the “heart of the North,” he said it was concerning that, despite hosting such a crucial meeting on North-West development, none of the governors from the zone attended in person.

“As stakeholders, we are here to offer our support out of love for the region. Leadership is a responsibility given to deliver results. When you do well, the people will appreciate you, but when you fail, you will also be held accountable,” he said.

He, however, commended participants who attended physically and contributed meaningfully to the deliberations.

Senior lawmakers, development experts and stakeholders who graced the summit made a strong call for a coordinated economic rescue of the North West.

The summit, themed “Advancing a Coordinated Regional Development for North West Nigeria,” became a rallying point for confronting what speakers described as the region’s real problem — not lack of resources, but lack of coordination.

Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, declared that the North West must deliberately reposition itself to shape Nigeria’s economic direction through strong regional institutions rather than fragmented interventions.

Barau said the creation of the North West Development Commission (NWDC) was a strategic response to decades of disjointed development efforts that failed to produce systemic impact across states.

According to him, while the region remains Nigeria’s largest agricultural belt and home to tens of millions of citizens, it continues to battle insecurity, infrastructure deficits, youth unemployment, climate stress and weak access to social services.

“These challenges do not respect state boundaries; therefore, our solutions must rise above them,” he said, stressing that the summit was a call to political coordination and policy coherence.

He assured that the National Assembly would provide the legislative backing and oversight needed for the NWDC to succeed under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Amb. John Metchie hails Kawule’s appointment

The appointment of Rt. Hon. Danlami Ahmed Kawule as Commander-in-Chief of the Bauchi State Forest Guard has been warmly welcomed by security stakeholders, with glowing commendations pouring in for a leader widely regarded as disciplined, experienced, and mission-focused.

Leading the tributes is Ambassador Dr. John Metchie, who described Hon. Kawule’s emergence as “a strategic and timely decision that strengthens Bauchi State’s environmental and internal security architecture.”

Amb. Metchie, himself a passionate security professional, noted that Hon. Kawule brings to the role a rare blend of doggedness, operational intelligence, and administrative depth, shaped by years of public and community service and hands-on leadership.

According to him, these qualities are critical at a time when forest security, environmental protection, and community safety are increasingly intertwined.

“Rt. Hon. Kawule is not just another Commander; he is a professional who understands security as a system, rooted in training, discipline, intelligence gathering, and community collaboration,” Amb. Metchie said.

He particularly commended the new Bauchi Commander-in-Chief’s professional approach to operations and training, stressing that effective forestry security goes beyond enforcement to include capacity building, ethical conduct, and sustained engagement with local communities.

Amb. Metchie expressed confidence that under Hon. Kawule’s leadership, the Forest Guard will evolve into a more responsive, intelligence-driven, and professionally trained outfit in Bauchi State, where he is also Commissioner of Housing and Environment.

Amb. Metchie further described the appointment as a strong signal of the Bauchi State Government’s resolve for security and to protect forest resources in line with the drive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government, efficiently being delivered by the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.

This will curb criminality, including kidnapping and banditry, and institutionalize security best practices across the State, especially in forested areas.

As felicitations continue to pour in, observers say Rt. Hon. Kawule’s leadership is expected to set a new tone for forestry and environmental security in Bauchi, one defined by discipline, professionalism, and good results.

For Amb. Metchie and many others in the security ecosystem, this appointment is not just a promotion, but a call to service, and one they believe that Rt. Hon Kawule, FCFA Barden Arewan Bauchi, is exceptionally prepared to answer.

“I was informed about the plan to host me at a grand dinner, but time did not permit it. It was not deliberate; it was due to the tight schedule at my office.

“Everywhere, people are following what my government is doing. Like I always say, we are very transparent and accountable.

“I came into office with a clear agenda. My six-point manifesto puts security first. We are achieving a lot across all six areas that I pledged to address during the campaign.

“We have to do what we are doing to open up the state for investors. Insha Allah, in the next few months, our international airport will be ready.

“There is no local government in Zamfara where I haven’t invested over 20 billion naira in projects. Visit the local governments to see the ongoing work. We are accomplishing a lot. We are seeing steady improvements in the state’s security. Additionally, our internally generated revenue has risen from 80 million to over five billion naira.”

Earlier, Muhammad Bello Umar, Chairman of the Zamfara State Retired Permanent Secretaries Association, said the honour is to commend Governor Lawal for the notable achievements of his administration since it began in 2023.

“At our Annual General Meeting, when you were barely 6 months in office, we requested payment of outstanding gratuities, which this government obliged and settled. All pending payments, totalling over 13 billion, were paid. Thank you for that.

“The history of Zamfara will remember you with honour. I appreciate your generosity towards our members, especially during medical emergencies.”
