  • Kano converts Sa’adatu Rimi varsity to degree-awarding COE

Kano converts Sa’adatu Rimi varsity to degree-awarding COE

The Kano State Executive Council (SEC) has approved the conversion of Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education, Kumbotso, into Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, now a degree-awarding institution.

In line with this decision, Governor Abba Yusuf dissolved the university’s management, instructing the Vice Chancellor to transfer responsibilities to the most senior deputy.

The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Baba Dantiye, revealed that the conversion followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders.

According to him, “the decision aims at enhancing educational quality and maintaining effective management.”

He said SEC acted on the recommendation of a high-powered committee appointed by the State Government which looked into the status of the university and charted the way to enhance its academic quality.

“The committee’s findings highlighted concerns from the academic and non-academic communities and other stakeholders regarding the potential negative impact of the transition to university status.

“Especially that the college is serving multiple kinds of students from non-metropolitan areas due to its strategic location and access,” he said.

According to the commissioner, the concerns include the risk of losing experienced lecturers, salary-related conflicts, and administrative challenges that could hinder the institution’s operational efficiency.

It was gathered that SEC had reasoned that several similar institutions in Nigeria have successfully operated as colleges of education while offering a variety of degree programmes without transforming into university status, under the “Dual Mode” introduced by the NCE-regulated body.

“The conversion is expected to have no adverse effects on students, as the current undergraduates in the College will continue with their studies.

“Also, the certificate of the University will be safely kept for future use. Moreover, the institution will continue to offer both its traditional courses and additional degree programmes in line with its new expanded academic mandate,” Dantiye was said to have been quoted

“This is what we have been clamouring for. I sponsored two Bills for the upgrade at the last assembly, but they were unsuccessful. But to the glory of God, it has come to fruition with Mr. President’s approval of the conversion.

“The upgrade/conversion of the two FCEs in Kano and Zaria would not only increase access to university education, but also enhance teachers’ education and the teaching profession in the country, which is the cornerstone for the development of all societies.

“This further confirms Mr. President’s special interest in the North West geopolitical zone, which needs special consideration given the challenges facing us in the region.

“The upgrade of the citadel of high learning is coming months after the establishment of the North West Development Commission (NWDC).

“On behalf of the entire people of Kano State and the North West geopolitical zone, I express our heartfelt appreciation to His Excellency for these interventions,” Barau said.

Senator Barau, who is also the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, congratulated the management, staff, students, and entire communities of the institutions, urging them to continue to uphold the highest academic excellence.

He expressed optimism that his bill for the conversion of the Federal College of Education (Technical), Bichi, to the Federal University of Education (Technical), Bichi, to provide the needed technical training to Nigerian youths would be given the same consideration.

“We are here to commiserate with the people of Bode Saadu and make sure that everybody is okay and look at the causes of the flood,” he told reporters on the sideline of the visit.

“We have realised that with the major work going on with the dualisation of the Ilorin-Mokwa Road by the Federal Ministry of Works, they have built a temporary bypass. Somehow, there are some challenges around the bypass, which experts will look into. That is the cause of the flooding. The Director of Highway Federal Ministry of Works and other experts are on their way here to find an immediate solution to the problem. We have also deployed the State Emergency Management Agency for some relief measures,” he said.

The Governor also appealed to residents to always steer clear of setbacks, adding: “One of the major challenges we have nationwide is people not observing setbacks. It is a major problem. Half of the buildings wouldn’t have been affected if they had observed the right setbacks.

“We will intensify our efforts to ensure that people observe setbacks for the safety of all.”

  • Clean Energy: ECOWAS targets production of 0.5 million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030

Clean Energy: ECOWAS targets production of 0.5 million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has set an ambitious target to produce 0.5 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030, aiming to drive clean energy production across the region.

This target was discussed during a capacity-building workshop for private sector stakeholders on green hydrogen, held on Thursday, September 19, at Nordic Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The Regional Coordinator for Renewable Energy and Green Hydrogen at the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL), Dr. Bruno Korgo, highlighted the region’s vast renewable energy potential, including solar, wind, and hydrogen.

He emphasised that these resources create a strong foundation for green hydrogen production, which is regarded as a key element in decarbonising sectors globally.

Dr. Korgo also underscored the significant potential for the region to produce, use, and export green hydrogen, which could position West Africa as a key player in the global clean energy market.

He said: “In the West African Green Hydrogen Policy, the target is for the West African region to be able to produce by 2030, 0.5 million tonnes of green hydrogen per year and by 2050, 10 million tonnes per year. This policy has been adopted by our heads of state.

“But the ministries of energy have to work to make it happen and that is why we are partnering with the government and private sector to join hands so that we may reach our goal.

“This unique energy is today perceived as the energy of the future. The opportunity to produce, use, and export green hydrogen to other demand centres appears like an opportunity for the West African region to start now to think about green hydrogen to harness its potential and also capture the future energy market that is coming with regard to green hydrogen demand.”

Speaking at the workshop, Temitope Dina, Assistant Director of Nigeria’s Ministry of Power, reiterated the federal government’s commitment to leveraging green hydrogen for economic growth, energy security, and environmental sustainability.

He emphasised the role of green hydrogen in reducing carbon emissions and diversifying energy sources.

According to Dina, the target has been marked by dedication, collaboration, and a clear understanding of the pivotal role green hydrogen will play in the energy future.

“In our region, with its abundant renewable energy resources, green hydrogen could be a game changer. This could stimulate our local economy, and industries, create jobs, and provide a significant boost to our economies across West Africa.

“This workshop represents a critical opportunity for us to deepen our understanding of the green hydrogen technology, explore best practices, and build the partnership necessary for the successful implementation of the green hydrogen policy and strategies.”

The workshop was seen as a critical step in advancing the understanding of green hydrogen technology and fostering partnerships necessary for the successful implementation of ECOWAS’ green hydrogen policies.

Tetra Pak promotes sustainability, innovation at Propak Nigeria 2024

The managing director of Tetra Pak West Africa, Haithem Debbiche, has expressed the company’s commitment to sustainability and investment in Nigeria’s packaging industry.

He spoke at the recently held Propak exhibition, where he highlighted how Tetra Pak aims to align its operations with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while addressing pressing issues such as food safety and waste reduction.

With over 50 years in Nigeria, Tetra Pak is not only showcasing its innovative packaging solutions but is also eager to engage with local stakeholders.

“Our vision is to make food safe and available everywhere. As a leader in food packaging, Tetra Pak is committed to using renewable, responsibly sourced materials,” Debbiche stated, noting the importance of environmentally friendly products that extend shelf life without refrigeration, thus benefiting local producers.

Debbiche also further addressed the alarming food waste issue in Nigeria, estimating that around 40% of agricultural production is lost annually.

Tetra Pak’s recent initiative to introduce smaller packaging sizes such as 50 ml containers for evaporated milk aims to tackle this problem by catering to consumer needs and reducing waste.

Debbiche noted that Tetra Pak is working on innovative packaging solutions, including a shift towards paper-based products that enhance recyclability. The company has partnered with local recycler Wecyclers to collect and process used cartons, ensuring they are recycled rather than discarded improperly.

Reflecting on the future, Debbiche expressed optimism about the African market, stating that while the continent may lag in sustainability initiatives, Tetra Pak is pioneering efforts that could lead to significant advancements.

He called for supportive government policies to foster investment and improve the value chain in the packaging industry.

  • Zamfara elders back Matawalle on military onslaught against bandits

Zamfara elders back Matawalle on military onslaught against bandits

…warn Gov Lawal against distracting defence minister

The group, under the auspices of Zamfara Elders Support for Peace and Development, has thrown its weight behind the minister of state for defence, Mohammed Bello Matawalle, over the ongoing military onslaught in Zamfara and the entire North West region.

This was as the elders urged the Zamfara state governor, Dauda Lawal, to concentrate on how to deliver good governance to his subjects and leave Matawalle, alone, arguing that, Governor Lawal could do better by building unity, development, and political cohesion in the state rather than creating unnecessary tension and overheating the polity.

Speaking on behalf of the group during a visit to some flood victims in Gummi, Talata Mafara, and Kaura Namoda local government areas of Zamfara state, Hon Aliyu Mammani Kaura, said corruption and bad governance allegations levelled against Matawalle by his successor were uncalled for.

According to Kaura, “We are aware there are large numbers of people, especially elites in the state, that are not happy with the kind of success recorded by the ongoing military operations against bandits, but we cannot deny the successes we have so far seen in the fight against banditry in our region.

“We, therefore, call on the Minister of State Defense, Chief of Defense Staff, and Service Chiefs not to relent on their oars. They should continue to destroy all bandits’ enclaves and those benefitting from their nefarious activities in Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina, and Kaduna states, respectively.

“While commending the efforts and foresight of President Tinubu on the leadership support given to the military to flush out these terrorists, we want to remind him of being careful with sycophants, especially those hiding under executive chairs to unleash venomous hatred and mischief.”

The group was reacting to what it called an “outburst” against the person of Matawalle by the governor on national television, describing it as nothing but mischievous intentions to divert the attention of Nigerians from ongoing success in the fight against banditry in his state.

So far, the group has donated foodstuffs, toiletries, cement, and roofing sheets, among other relief items worth millions of naira, to some victims of the flood disaster in Zamfara state.

He said: “To us, Matawalle’s era is much more transparent, beneficial, peaceful, and secure to the people of Zamfara compared to what we have now.

“Today, our people are suffering poor governance, escalation of insecurity challenges, poor social amenities, and destruction of Zamfara economy and social life because their governor abandoned his constitutional duty; always on the run either to Abuja or out of the country without commensurate results to the state,” Kaura decried.

He continued: “We were surprised how Peoples Democratic Party, PDP supporters in Zamfara are surviving with a truant political leader like Governor Dauda that have sacrificed their support for his luxury.

“We know that Yarima, Shinkafi, Yari, and Matawalle are not saints, but they are more reliable, trusted, and dedicated to the progress and development of Zamfara state than Gov Dauda.

“Government of Zamfara under present dispensation has turned into a more liability for the survival of an ordinary citizen of the state going about the escalation of insecurity that has destroyed social activities in the state capital and beyond.”

  • Senator Karimi’s military base project set for handover to Army

Senator Karimi’s military base project set for handover to Army

Kogi West Senator Sunday Karimi has informed Army authorities of his intention to handover the newly completed Military Forward Operating Base (FOB) in his Constituency.

The project, which ground breaking held in January 2024, is located at the intersection of Kwara/Kogi/Ekiti states boundary town in Egbe, Yagba West Local Council, Kogi State.

Eruku, an Okun speaking community in Kwara State, is a walking distance from Egbe.

Karimi, in the letter dated 14th September, 2024, scheduled the official commissioning of the project for Monday, October 14th, 2024.

The letter titled: “Handing over of newly constructed and furnished military base for the Nigerian Army in Egbe, Yagba West Local Government Area, Kogi State” to the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Ibadan, Oyo State, through the Brigade Commander,

12 Brigade (BDE), Nigerian Army, Lokoja, Kogi State, reads: “Sir, I hereby wish to inform you that I have completed the construction of a Military Base in the outskirts of Egbe, Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State at the border between Kwara and Kogi State for the Nigerian Army to improve Security in Kogi and Kwara States.

“The idea of the military base was conceived by me in January this year to assist the Nigerian Military and Security Agencies to ensure quick response in combating terrorists, kidnappers and criminals whose activities in recent times around the Border of Kogi and Kwara (where there is a great expanse of forests and fast becoming a fortress for criminals) has become an issue of national concern. It is also hoped that the presence of a standard military base will serve as a deterrence to these criminals and restore peace and security in the communities in Kogi and Kwara States”.

The lawmaker further stated that the urge to construct, furnish and handover the edifice to the Nigerian Army was borne out of his commitment to assisting the federal government in its fight against insecurity, protecting the lives of the citizenry and warding off criminals from the rural communities.

According to him, the newly completed military base has two hostels which have 85 bed spaces for soldiers. It is fully furnished with beds, beddings and all fittings for comfortable human habitation. There is a concrete armory and a moderately furnished office wing for the Commander of the Military Base.

The official residence of the Commander of the Military Base is a 3-bedroom apartment, fully furnished with allied fittings.

The FOB also features Officers Mess (a) and (b) for officers and soldiers in the Military Base. The armory building is a well-constructed Watch Tower with Surveillance camera for intelligence and security gathering.

The facility occupies an adequately fenced land on approximately 10,000 Square Metres, fitted with American Security Fence Wires with two iron gates provided.

There are 25KVA solar generating inverters provided for regular off-grid power supply and 22KVA standby generating set provided as alternative power source to ensure constant power supply.

Karimi reiterated his commitment to connecting the base to grid power supply (PHCN/IBEDC) immediately. Other features of the FOB are separate toilets and kitchen facilities, refrigerators, cookers and a cell for detention, among others.

“Having completed the project, it is my desire to hand over same to the Nigerian Army for the deployment of troops and for good use immediately.

“I hereby request that the hand over of the project to the Nigerian Army be scheduled/fixed for 12th October 2024 which shall coincide with the celebration of Egbe Township Day and we request your presence at the commissioning and handing over of the Military Base as part of events marking the celebration. Whilst appreciating you for your commitment to defending the Nigerian State from external aggression and suppressing armed insurrection of all kinds,” he said.

When he was interviewed former presidential aide, renowned media practitioner, Fellow of the Association of Nigerian Authors (FANA) and Adjunct Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Abuja, Dr Tunde Olusunle, conveyed the collective delight of the Okun country to this development.

Olusunle, who chairs the Yagba Action Group (YAG), said it is heartening that “All is set for the inauguration of the Forward Operating Base (FOB), initiated and wholly built by the Senator representing Kogi West District, Sunday Karimi. Karimi spent the 2023 yuletide with his constituents visiting communities and local government areas across the seven local government areas in his catchment.

“He was inundated with complaints and cries about how bandits, kidnappers and similar criminal elements, had made life unbearable for his people. The situation has badly impacted the agrarian economy of Kogi West, almost creating an existential and food security crisis.

“State and local government employees who work as teachers, agriculturists, among others vocations, have had to bank outside their domains, with attendant risks and inconveniences.

“Deadly robbers have repeatedly attacked banks and chased the First Bank, which had a brand in each of the seven Kogi West LGAs, and Access Bank, with Yagba federal constituency most affected.

“A dismayed Karimi prioritised a model FOB beginning from early this year, to mitigate the constant violation of the peace and security of his people by miscreants.

“Without awaiting the bureaucratese of raising the question of the helplessness of his people on the floor of the parliament, he chose to design and finance the initiative from his personal resources. This is a most exemplary and laudable precedent.”
