  • Nigeria can become Halal hub of Africa, says UNIABUJA don

Nigeria can become Halal hub of Africa, says UNIABUJA don

…urges Fed Govt to revisit halal roadmap report

A professor of Islamic Jurisprudence at the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), Luqman Zakariyah, has said that Nigeria is in a position to be the halal hub of Africa.

This, he said, could be achieved if the federal government works with major stakeholders to increase halal certification.

The Professor of Islamic Jurisprudence stressed that halal industry would boost the economy.

He called on the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Doris Nkiruka Uzoka-Anite, to revisit the report and activities of the Technical Committee on the Development of a Roadmap and Operational Framework for Halal Certification in Nigeria.

The don said the revisit becomes necessary as Nigeria’s halal industry continues to evolve significantly, gaining acceptance from both Muslims and non-Muslims for its effectiveness and wide range of benefits.

Prof Zakariyah made this statement during the International Halal Seminar organised by the Halal Certification Authority (HCA) at Radisson Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos.

He lamented that the lack of full government intervention in regulating and authenticating the halal industry in Nigeria has left many local manufacturers with no clear directions, especially in terms of certifying their products with halal authorization.

The university lecturer said former Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Ambassador Mariam Yalwaji Katagum, commissioned the technical committee to harness the immense opportunities in the global halal market for Nigeria.

“There are more efforts expected from the Federal Government on standardization of the halal industry. This issue has gone beyond religious stride. It has become an economic, social, and wellness affair. The effort of the Technical Committee established by the former Minister of State for Industry, Trade, and Investment needs to be revisited and implemented. Such effort should not go in vain,” he said.

Earlier in his address, the Chairman Management Team, of Halal Certification Authority (HCA), Prof. Ibrahim Oreagba, said: “The global halal industry is estimated to be worth around $2.47 trillion (excluding Islamic finance) and is now one of the fastest-growing markets.

“Similarly, the halal industry is no longer confined to food and food-related products but rather includes pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, health products, toiletries, and medical devices as well as service sector components such as hospitality, logistics, marketing, print and electronic media, packaging, branding, and financing.

Rite Foods Limited Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Seleem Adegunwa, commended HCA for championing the entrenchment of product quality in line with Shari’a and international standards, noting that it has contributed greatly to the growth of the halal market in Nigeria.

“As a key stakeholder in the Nigerian food and beverages industry, Rite Foods Ltd. is poised to support any genuine attempts at enhancing quality assurance and development of the Halal market in Nigeria and it is important to mention that Rite Foods Ltd. got Halal certification on the 7th of February 2022. We assure you of our support towards the actualisation of your lofty aims which are aimed at developing and establishing halal product standards in conformity with Islamic Law and international standards.”

A lecturer at Bayero University, Kano (BUK), Dr. Dahiru Adamu, asserted that Nigeria still has a long way to go in terms of certification in the Halal industry.

He said: “Nigeria’s fair share in the global Halal market is infinitesimal. We are not where we are supposed to be and that is because there is no infrastructure for Halal Certification within the country. We have facilities for every other thing; we have little or no resources and facilities for Halal Certification.

“If you consider what we are endowed with in Nigeria, it is really enormous, so, if we can get things right, in respect to the Halal industry, it is going to be a plus for us. Our government needs to provide the Halal industry with infrastructural facilities.

“When we say Halal Certification infrastructure, we are talking about the technical policies and laws put together to regulate the industry, ensure harmony, and prevent conflict. It also involves conformity, training of assessors, and standards on which certification will be based. We should also collaborate to ensure the attainment of set goals. All these put together translate to infrastructure in this context.”

Kwara reiterates committment to decent living for workers, retirees

Kwara State Government said it is committed to improving the well-being of its workforce and creating an atmosphere for them to live a decent life after retirement.

Declaring its support for the realisation of the Seventeen World Sustainable Development Goals, the government said part of these goals centre around ensuring decent work for people and growing the economy.

“The era where Kwara civil servants retire and have nothing to do has passed. What the administration is trying to focus on is to make sure that after you retire you have something to fall back onto,” Deputy Governor Kayode Alabi told reporters in Ilorin during the maiden Kwara SDGs Convention (1st Kw-SDGs).

Alabi urged participants to see the convention as an opportunity to make necessary inquiries and network towards building a solid foundation for a better tomorrow.

Organised by the office of the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on SDGs, Hon. Mariam Nnafatima Imam, the Convention featured lectures and panel discussion.

It was attended by some government officials, Permanent Secretaries,

and other top civil servants on Grade Level 15 to 17, including Commissioner for Finance, Dr Hauwa Nuru; and Commissioner for Business Innovation and Technology Hon. Damilola Yusuf-Adelodun.

Among the Speakers were the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Digital Innovation Ishola Kayode; founder, Tamirah Entrepreneurship Center (TEC), Rukayat Yahaya; a serial entrepreneur with focus on Water, Education and Agriculture, Gegele Yahya Olushola; Managing Director, CNN Limited, Nelson Daramola; and an associate Professor of Enterprise Creation, Incubation and Development (ECID) at the Kwara State University (KWASU), Dr Rahman Oladimeji Mustapha.

“The state government is in support of the SDGs which is a blueprint for the global future. We are creating an atmosphere where an average retiree can say ‘yes it paid me when I was working with the government and I have something meaningful to be doing afterwards’,” the Deputy Governor said.

He was represented by the Commissioner for Communication Bola Olukoju.

SSA to the Governor on SDGs and convener of 1st Kwara SDGs Convention, Nnafatima, said they organized the programme to equip participants with relevant skills and strategies needed to harness opportunities and thrive in agriculture, entrepreneurship and ICT.

“Our goal is to explore vital topics that will not only help us navigate the present but also ensure a prosperous and secure future for everyone, especially those approaching retirement in the Civil Service,” she said.

“We aim to equip participants with the knowledge and strategies needed to harness opportunities in agriculture, information and communication technology, entrepreneurship, and other related fields of endeavor, so you can thrive both professionally and personally which is in line with SDG Goal 8, 9, 11 and 12.”

She said they conducted surveys and realized that many civil servants usually develop phobia when going for retirement, adding that they need enlightenment on how to cope after leaving the Service.

“We are focusing on civil servants because after conducting surveys we realized some sorts of retirement syndrome that come up when civil servants are about to retire,” she said.

“From the survey we are able to find out that they need an enlightenment programme like this so that they don’t have a phobia and they can move on even after retirement. Let it be an incubation period for them to carry on smoothly.”

She said the training will be a continuous exercise, adding that the plan includes introducing how the trainees can access loans, international grants and other skills for them to grow.

Ishola, in his lecture, spoke on some of the opportunities in digital innovation, including how it enables the government and participants to diversify the economy.

He said the digital world offers a lot of opportunities that the retirees can leverage to network their businesses and meet their economic needs.

“For us to be able to bring life into Sustainable Development Goals in our state and in our country, we have to leverage digital innovation. In the hall, we have retirees, government officials, people from the civil society groups speaking on collaboration, accountability and transparency. These are key things that can only be driven through adoption of digital innovation,” he said.

Olushola Gegele, whose lecture was titled “Agricultures: Sustainable Practices and Opportunities for Retirees”, dwelled on how participants can harness the potentials of organic waste to create wealth and become self-sufficient.

He said sawdust and rice shafts, after burning and left for a period of time in a container, can generate mushrooms, whose waste he said can be used as manure for farming.

“Let’s go for waste management if we want to harness the future. Using what we have locally to create economic prosperity. This is where the World is going. Retirees can look at what they see as waste around them and strive to turn it into what can give them income,” he said.

SON calls for strong regulations to address building collapse

The director general of the Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON), Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, has emphasised the need for a comprehensive approach to preventing the recurrence of building collapses in the country.

He highlighted the importance of ensuring the safety and integrity of structures in Nigeria by adhering to Specifications and Codes of Practice standards.

He added that compliance by regulators and service providers is crucial in restoring public confidence in the Nigerian building industry.

A statement signed by the director of press, Mrs. Foluso Bolaji, revealed that SON’s investigations into the frequent building collapses identified causes such as poor structural designs, quackery, unprofessionalism, and inadequate or absent soil testing.

The statement said: “Other causes include poor construction practices and procedures, unapproved construction, wrong demolition process, lack of maintenance, negligence, use of substandard materials, steel reinforcement bars as well as poor drainage around the collapsed buildings.

“The organisation on its part has produced 168 Standards and Codes of Practice for the building and construction industry since 2004 for contractors to implement during construction. These standards are, Nigerian Industrial Standard (NIS) 117, 2004 Specification for Steel Bars for the Reinforcement of Concrete, Nigerian Industrial Standard (NIS) 499, 2004 Standard for Iron and Steel, Nigerian Industrial Standard (NIS) 588, 2007 Testing Hardened Concrete Part 1, Method for Determination of the Compressive Strength of Concrete Cores, Nigerian Industrial Standard (NIS) 585, 2007 Standard for Concrete Admixtures – Part 1 – Specification for Accelerating Admixtures, Retarding Admixtures and Water Reducing Admixtures, Nigerian Industrial Standard (NIS) 156, 1982 Standard Method for Testing Fresh Concrete and Nigerian Industrial Standard (NIS) ISO 41001, 2020 Facility Management System Standard amongst others.”

Dr. Okeke said that the organization, empowered by the SON Act, has implemented regulatory measures to ensure the quality of both locally manufactured products and imported goods.

He added that this was achieved through the Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme (MANCAP) for local products and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria Conformity Assessment Programme (SONCAP) for pre-shipment verification of imported goods.

Demolition may further push Nigeria’s 20m housing deficit upwards, group warns

The Executive Director, HipCity Innovation Centre, Bassey Bassey has warned that Nigeria’s housing deficit estimated at 20m may further go up if incessant demolitions of houses by governments were not addressed.

Bassey said constant demolitions and evictions have rendered thousands of families homeless, worsening Nigeria’s housing deficit crisis.

He spoke during the launch of an app to track demolition and the causes in Abuja.

The executive director of HipCity Innovation Centre called on the Federal and State governments to put measures in place to end the widespread demolitions of houses in Abuja, Lagos, and other parts of the country.

According to him, eviction and demolition should be the last resort of the government if temporary accommodation would not be provided for victims.

According to the centre’s Executive Director, Bassey Bassey, at the launch of an app to track demolition and the causes, yesterday, in Abuja, over

Bassey said the low cost housing units pegged at N39 million by the Federal Government was beyond the reach of ordinary civil servants.

He called for adoption of inclusive urban planning, strengthened legal protections against arbitrary evictions, enhanced social safety nets, and fair notice and compensation for affected residents.

He also advocates for a holistic approach to urban development that respects the rights of all citizens, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

To track, report, and engage the government on the issue, Bassey said HipCity, in collaboration with the Heinrich Boell Foundation, launched Nigeria’s first web-based eviction and demolition reporting platform.

The platform, according to him, aims to track and report evictions and demolitions nationwide, providing a critical channel for stakeholders to document, engage, and address the issues.

“The platform will also offer empirical data to evaluate the legality and motives behind such actions.

“As the housing crisis continues to unfold, this new platform represents a significant step towards ensuring transparency and accountability in urban development practices. Stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society organisations, and the private sector, are urged to collaborate in addressing these critical issues to build a more inclusive and just society.” Bassey added.

Meanwhile, he said the Know Your Area Council (KYAC) initiative “aims to bridge the gap between councils and citizens by providing FCT residents with the information they need to hold their elected leaders accountable, advocate basic services, and assess the impact of council projects.”

He added: “KYAC will produce and disseminate performance scorecards for chairmen and councillors, evaluate the impact of council projects on local communities, and offer platforms for council executives to report on their activities.

“Additionally, KYAC will document the history, challenges, and achievements of councils while fostering civic engagement among potential candidates for the 2026 council elections.”

Olofa, ODU hail Kwara Gov, seek support for expansion works on Ibrahim Taiwo Road

The Olofa of Offa Oba Mufutau Esuwoye 11 has hailed Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq’s passion for infrastructural and rural urban development.

He called on the people of the community to support the expansion and rehabilitation works recently approved for the popular Ibrahim Taiwo road.

The Olofa spoke at his palace during a sensitisation visit by the Kwara Commissioner for Works Engr. Abdulquawiy Olododo, where he sought public support for the extensive construction works.

On the Commissioner’s entourage were the Executive Chairman, Kwara State Geographical Information Service Alhaji Abdulkareem Suleiman; Chief Press Secretary to Governor Rafiu Ajakaye; Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Infrastructure Engr. Ladi Yusuf; and some senior bureaucrats.

The team was received at the Palace by Olofa of Offa with many High Chiefs and the leadership of the Offa Descendants’ Union (ODU).

The Olofa commended Governor AbdulRazaq for the project and how his government continues to prioritise the welfare of the people of the state, including Offa community.

The monarch said his subjects are lovers of development and are ready to cooperate with the government and the contractors.

“We are happy for what brought you here today. We thank His Excellency for always being with us. His Excellency has always shown us that Offa is his second home,” Olofa of Offa said.

“We are always in support of his good works and laudable projects, and we pray Almighty Allah to be with him in all ramifications.

“I am sending out my chiefs and representatives to inform the people of the need to support this huge development. Nobody should disturb the contractor under any guise. If you have anything obstructing government’s setbacks, please remove it. This is in our interest.”

Abdulquawiy said the team visited the First Class monarch to seek his support, especially with a view to educating persons whose temporary structures have taken over road setbacks to give way.

“We are here in Offa to meet the Olofa of Offa, Oba Mufutau Gbadamosi Esuwoye II and the Offa Descendants Union (ODU) and to intimate them and the entire Offa community about the reconstruction of Ibrahim Taiwo road,” he said.

“For us to reconstruct and expand this road, we will need to claim the government setback where we have some temporary structures. So we need their cooperation.

“As you all know, this government of Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq is about the people. There is the need for us to communicate and engage with the community for them to be aware of exactly what our intentions are and what we are doing. We are glad about the reception by the Olofa and the ODU.”

The Commissioner said the contractors are now on site to proceed with the work, which will last about four months.

The road will be supported with concrete drainage, solar street lights, and walkways, he added.

National Vice President for ODU, Alhaji Tajudeen Bello, commended the administration for the road project, which he said reflects its commitment to infrastructural growth across the state.

He urged residents to always respect road setbacks when erecting any structures, saying road setbacks are meant for public advantage.

“We want everybody to key into what the government is doing. The government is not doing anything that is bad. It is the right thing to maintain the setbacks while building anything. So, the road setbacks belong to the government, and that is what the government is claiming for the good of our community,” he said.

The Commissioner also inspected the Flyover at Unity, which he said is now 65% done.

“We are very satisfied with the quality of work done on this project.

Just a few days ago, a delegation from Nigerian Institute of Civil Engineers was on this site, and they equally issued a statement that the quality that is being done is very satisfactory,” he said.

“The project is moving at a good pace that we are very happy with. As you can see, we are already standing on the bridge.”

The Public Relations Officer of the university, Abdullahi Abdullahi, who spoke to The Nation on phone yesterday said: “Let me clear one impression, our students kidnapped in Otukpo, Benue State are 12, not 20 that was widely reported in the media.

“Among the 12 are 11 medical students and one graduate in Housemanship, making it 12.

“I can confirm that out of the 12 victims in captivity, 11 of them are our students and the 12th is a graduate of Housemanship.’’

It was reported that no fewer than 20 medical students from the UNIJOS were kidnapped in Otukpo last Thursday evening while on their way to Enugu State.

Palliatives: Senator Natasha distributes 2,400 bags of fertilisers to constituents

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, distributed four truckloads of fertilisers to farmers on Saturday.

The fertilisers, provided by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, are part of ongoing efforts to enhance food security and boost agriculture in her constituency.

The distribution event took place at her residence in Ihima, Okehi, Kogi State, and was attended by farmers’ unions from the district’s five local government areas, Ebira farmers’ unions from neighbouring states, the Ebira Peoples Association (EPA), and members of the Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo communities in Kogi Central. The four trucks contained 2,400 bags of NPK and Urea fertilisers.

In a statement released by her media aide, Arogbonlo Israel, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan urged farmers to register with unions in their respective areas to better access federal government interventions.

She stressed the importance of maintaining accurate and verifiable records to obtain reliable data on farmers and their needs.

She disclosed that the intervention was brought by the Federal Government to support farmers.

“These fertilisers were given to the good people of Kogi Central by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He thought it wise to support the farmers of Kogi Central, and he provided us with four trailers.

“I have brought all four trailers down here. We have also devised a means of distribution that will take into consideration farmers who farm in Kogi Central and those who farm in other states.

“We have many Ebira farmers in Ondo, Ekiti, Edo, and Nasarawa states. So, we will allocate a portion of the fertilizers to them, but the larger part will go to our farmers who cultivate our soil here.

“We have also considered our people who are indigenes of other tribes but are residents here, such as the Hausa/Fulani, Yoruba, and Igbo communities.

“They will all take part in this fertiliser distribution because we understand how difficult times are, and we all need interventions and palliatives.

“The 2,400 bags of NPK (Nitrogen, Potassium, Calcium) and Urea fertilisers will be distributed today. This is not the only support that farmers in Kogi Central will receive, but I urge you all to register with your various Farmers’ Associations in your local government areas, as we will rely on this data moving forward.

“The farmers’ register is necessary because we need to know the capacity of every farm and what is being planted. We need to identify farmers based on the crops they plant and the size of their farmland, as this will determine the kind of intervention and support they receive,” she said.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Muhammed Bashir Yusuf expressed appreciation for the gesture, assuring that the farmers would put the fertilisers to good use.

The Secretary General of the Ebira Peoples Association (EPA), Baba Abdulrazaq, representing the President General of the association, praised Senator Natasha’s unprecedented efforts, adding that democracy is finding its true meaning under her leadership.

“On behalf of the Ebira people, I appreciate Senator Natasha. We couldn’t have expected less from you. The difference in political representation is clear, and I call on other political representatives to follow in her footsteps,” he said.

He urged the farmers to use the fertilizers for their intended purpose and further encouraged them to register with their local unions.

He seized the opportunity to appreciate the developmental strides of the lawmaker including her efforts for Ajaokuta Steel to be fully operational, adding that people should not pay attention to the ongoing misinformation about the Ajaokuta Steel investigation.
