    Katsina stakeholders, residents dissociate selves from planned protests

    Critical stakeholders and residents of Katsina State, including: market women, civil society and interest groups have dissociated themselves from the planned August 1 nationwide protest.

    Katsina Acting Governor, Malam Faruq Lawal Jobe, announced this while briefing journalists after a meeting with civil society organisations, community leaders with heads of security agencies, members of the state executive council, lawmakers, the chairmen of the 34 local governments at the Katsina Government House.

    He said they have unanimously agreed that the protest would not proceed

    According to him: ”While recognising the constitutional right to peaceful assembly, the potential negative consequences of the protest including the risk of public property damage, loss of lives, and disruption of economic activities, cannot be ignored.

    “We understand the importance of citizens expressing their views, but we must also consider the potential impact on our state”

    ” We have a responsibility to protect lives and property, and we believe that dialogue and engagement are more effective ways to address these concerns”

    ”in place of the protest,we enjoined residents to join the state government’s annual thanksgiving ceremony, “Yaumus-Shukr,”,held every first of August of the year.”

    He further stated that this year’s event will hold hold at the People’s Square, Government House, Katsina.

    The Acting Governor urged residents to go about their usual businesses, assuring of government’s preparedness to continue ensuring the security of lives and properties across the state.

    Abdulrazaq flags off residents’ registration exercise

    Kwara Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq on Monday flagged off a residents’ registration exercise, an initiative he said would help to generate accurate database, guide government’s developmental plans, and provide relevant information that will enhance security of lives and properties.

    The Governor also said such a database will assist in allocation of resources, including citizens’ access to social protection services like health insurance and government’s supports across different demographics.

    The Governor presented himself for registration, conducted by the Acting General Manager of the Kwara State Residents’ Registration Agency (KWASRRA) Tajudeen Jimoh.

    Abdulrazaq in December 2021 launched the KWASSRA, calling it a response to the imperatives for accurate information about every single person who resides in the state and how to plan for their needs in every way conceivable.

    “What we are doing today marks the formal commencement of the registration exercise, which will capture relevant data of every resident of Kwara State,” he said at the launch on Monday.

    “The essence is to have a reliable data bank of everyone and use same for planning, allocation of resources, and security preparedness. With a reliable database, planning becomes easier and everyone living within our state is easily identified for purposes of planning, social protection programmes and other government services, and security.

    “With the right data, we can plan for today and make fair projections for the future. With reliable data, we will know who is employed and who is not, and further deploy resources to tackle other challenges of development.

    “My team and I are taking part in it today. I urge everyone to also make themselves available for the data capturing exercise at designated centres and time. When you do that, you are contributing your own quota to sustainable growth and development.”

    The exercise will include biometrics to generate a unique identity for each resident.

    A deep look at Abacha’s Abuja property matter

    The Federal Government, under President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration, revoked a landed property in Maitama, Abuja, belonging to the family of the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha. The approval was given in 1993 while the revocation occurred in February 2006 when Nasir El-Rufai was the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

    Five years later, precisely on May 25, 2011, ex-FCT Minister, Bala Mohammed, a former lawmaker, issued a Certificate of Occupancy (C-of-O) in favour of a company, Salamed Ventures Limited, even though a legal proceeding on the property was ongoing.

    The firm, according to available information, acquired the property at the cost of $1.3 million during the time the matter was pending at the Court of Appeal. Since then, the Abacha family and the authorities have locked horns in a fierce legal battle.

    The property was not in contravention of any law of the FCT or the Land Use Act, so taking a closer look at the revocation, it was neither done in the public interest nor carried out in contravention of the rules and regulations. The Abacha family continues to insist that the property was lawfully acquired.

    Mohammed Abacha and Dr. Maryam Abacha, acting as administrators of the estate, had approached a High Court in February 2006 under Justice I. M. Bukar. On June 30, 2009, Justice I. M. Bukar struck out the suit, saying the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the matter and that the appropriate court was the Federal High Court.

    The plaintiffs then proceeded to the Court of Appeal in Abuja, citing an infringement on their rights. Subsequently, on May 18, 2015, the court affirmed the verdict of the trial court and struck out the suit. The plaintiffs thereafter instituted the present litigation on May 25, 2015, following the judgement of the appellate court.

    On July 19, 2024, Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court dismissed the claims of Mohammed and Maryam Abacha. Justice Lifu ruled that the Abacha family lacked the locus standi to challenge the revocation nor demand an N500 million compensation. Counsel to the family, Reuben Atabo (SAN) said the trial court erred in the suit dismissal.

    Now, in the appeal which joined President Bola Tinubu, the FCT Minister, the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) and Salamed Ventures Ltd as respondents, the plaintiffs are asking the Court of Appeal to set aside the sale and transfer of the title to Plot 3119, Maitama, measuring 3 hectares of land to Salamed on February 25, 2011.

    The Abacha family also want the court to set aside the judgment of Justice Lifu of the Federal High Court, Abuja, which on July 19, 2024, dismissed their suit on the property. The family are further praying for the Appellate Court to invoke Section 15 of the Court of Appeal Act to take over their legal battle as a court of first instance.

    Speaking on the matter, an Abuja-based lawyer, Barrister Abdulsalam Nasiru, noted that the plaintiffs have the opportunity to present their case at the Federal High Court as ordered by the Court of Appeal, adding that it was wrong for the government to sell the land while the case is ongoing.

    “In my opinion, the revocation was a lack of respect for the law. Whatever made the former FCT Minister set such a precedent is questionable. On one side, the action appears like humiliating the ex-president’s family. On the other hand, it shows disregard for the Land Use Act, which the family followed to acquire the property.”

    Said Akintade Shittu, a public affairs analyst, also gave his opinion on the controversial legal tussle. “First, one can blame Sani Abacha for some misdoings, as in the cases of other past presidents, but there was legality in the way the land in dispute was acquired.

    “Second, whoever advised Nasir El-Rufai and Bala Mohammed to revoke and afterwards sell a property after revocation, while the same property is being disputed in court, got it wrong. Until court processes are exhausted, any action taken on a disputed landed property may look personal.”

    Arewa youth groups pull out of planned protest after Bichi’s intervention

    A coalition of about 10,000 Arewa youth groups have withdrawn from the planned August 1, protest after the intervention of Hon. Abubakar Bichi, a respected member of the House of Representatives and chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations.

    In a statement co-signed by Mallam Abdullahi Muazu and Pastor Kyune Bibi, the groups said they would rather hold prayers in mosques and churches across the 19 northern states.

    The group believes that protests often lead to violence and destruction, which can hinder the progress of the north hence their decision to seek divine guidance and wisdom for the country’s leaders.

    According to the statement, Hon. Bichi’s support for President Bola Tinubu‘s administration was instrumental in this decision.

    “Hon. Bichi has shown that there are leaders who genuinely care about the welfare of their people, his efforts have inspired us to adopt a more constructive approach, focusing on prayer and dialogue to address our challenges,” the groups said. 

    “We are grateful for Bichi’s mentorship and vision, which have earned him the respect and admiration of the Arewa youths. He has made us understand the policies of President Tinubu better. 

    “President Tinubu’s leadership has been a masterclass in visionary governance, akin to a skilled architect crafting a magnificent edifice. He has laid the foundation for a prosperous Nigeria, building bridges of unity and progress that span the length and breadth of our great nation. With each stroke of his policy brush, he paints a vibrant picture of hope and opportunity, transforming the canvas of our collective future.

    “His innovative policies have blossomed into a lush harvest of prosperity, yielding fruits of economic growth, social justice, and infrastructure development. As we bask in the warmth of his leadership, we reap the rewards of his tireless labour, our lives enriched by the abundance of his vision.

    “We firmly believe that prayer is a more effective and sustainable approach to addressing our challenges. Protests often lead to division, violence, and destruction, which can hinder the progress of our region. In contrast, prayer has the power to unite us, bring us closer to God, and inspire positive change. By seeking divine guidance and wisdom, we can find solutions to our problems that are peaceful, constructive, and beneficial to all.

    “Through prayer, we can tap into the power of faith and hope, which can move mountains and overcome even the most daunting challenges. As the Quran says, ‘And your Lord says, Call upon Me; I will respond to you.” (Quran 40:60) and the Bible states ‘This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.’ (1 John 5:14) Let us therefore choose the path of prayer and supplication, and trust that God will answer our prayers and bring prosperity and peace to our region.

    “We urge all Arewa youths to join us in this journey of prayer and supplication. Let us come together in our churches and mosques, putting aside our differences and uniting in our quest for divine guidance and wisdom. Let us pray for our leaders, for our region, and our nation. Let us seek God’s face and ask for His blessings and protection.

    “By doing so, we can create a wave of positive change that will transform our region and bring peace, prosperity, and development to our people. Let us rise and take our rightful place as the future leaders of our nation, and let us start by getting on our knees and seeking God’s face.”

    The groups, therefore, reiterated their unwavering support for President Tinubu and his administration.

    “Let us put aside our differences and work together towards a common purpose. Let us give the President our full backing as he strives to address the challenges facing our nation.  We advise all youths to shun protests and instead seek the face of God.”

    Stakeholders urge Tinubu to resolve Dangote refinery dispute for economic stability

    In a crucial appeal, an advocacy group Association of Stakeholders against Crude Oil Decline to Dangote, has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the ongoing disputes surrounding the Dangote refinery and find an amicable resolution for all parties.

    The call emphasises the importance of protecting Dangote refinery for the economic development of both the Southwest region and Nigeria as a whole.

    “We call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a true progressive leader, to ensure the success of the Dangote refinery, which is critical for Nigeria’s economic stability,” they appealed.

    The stakeholders group comprises the Lagos Advocacy Group; the Unemployment Youth Association of Nigeria; the Lagos State Youths Parliament, the Ibeju Lekki Chapter; The Empire Advocacy for Human Rights, and the Ibeju Lekki People’s Forum.

    Speaking at the joint press conference in Lagos, the convener, Yakubu Eleto, warned: “Should the refinery face frustration, the nation would experience increased costs, job losses, a decline in revenue, dependence on imports, and significant national security concerns,”

    The stakeholders advocate for a peaceful resolution between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Dangote refinery’s management.

    “We demand transparency in the refinery’s operations and government regulations,” they stated, stressing the need for accountability from the government regarding its actions and claims against the refinery.

    The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) and other stakeholders have criticised Dangote’s pricing strategy, arguing that the higher cost of Dangote’s diesel discourages local purchases.

    IPMAN President, Abubakar Maigandi suggested: “Price reductions could help Dangote capture more of the domestic market.”

    The monumental Dangote Petroleum Refinery was envisioned to revolutionise Nigeria’s oil refining capabilities by meeting domestic fuel needs, reducing fuel scarcity, conserving foreign exchange, reducing unemployment, and aiding economic growth. However, the refinery has faced numerous challenges, including accusations of monopolistic practices, licensing issues, and oil supply problems.

    Aliko Dangote defended his business practices, saying: “My refinery adds value by using local raw materials to produce high-quality products. Our diesel, with a sulfur content of 87.6 ppm, is superior to imported diesel.

    He also denied accusations of monopolistic practices: “There are other refineries in Nigeria, so we cannot be a monopoly.”

    The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri, has intervened in the dispute, meeting with Dangote and other stakeholders to resolve the issues.

    Lokpobiri emphasised the importance of cooperation among stakeholders to ensure the success of the oil and gas sector, which is critical to Nigeria’s economic growth and energy security.

    The stakeholders urged the government not to hinder the project but to ensure it operates for the benefit of the Nigerian people.

    “Considering the public’s interest, it is imperative that the refinery’s operations positively impact the community,” they added.

    They also called for continuous roundtable discussions between the government and Dangote’s management to facilitate mutually beneficial solutions.

    A significant part of the stakeholders’ plea is for collaborative agreements between Dangote and independent marketers to address market and pricing challenges.

    “Facilitating direct sales and distribution channels could stabilize prices and ensure wider market access for Dangote’s refined products,” they noted. This, they believe, would mitigate the impact of international market fluctuations, providing more stability for consumers and businesses alike.

    They emphasised the role of the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) in prioritizing domestic crude allocations to local refineries, including Dangote’s, to enhance the country’s energy security and economic stability.

    “We urge the Federal Government to reassess the licensing and regulatory framework to prevent the importation of substandard fuels and support local refining initiatives,”

    The stakeholders also appealed to traditional rulers, including the Ooni of Ife, Awujale of Ijebuland, Alake of Egbaland, Owa Obokun of Ijesha Kingdom, Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba of Lagos, and the Deji of Akure, to rally around the refinery.

    They stress that the refinery, located in Yoruba land, is a significant investment that should not be allowed to fail, warning that posterity will judge them if they fail to act.

    The stakeholders concluded that resolving the issues with Dangote amicably would enhance Nigeria’s image as a country supportive of indigenous investors, thus restoring government integrity and attracting international investment.

    The Plateau Police Command has nabbed a suspect who released a video calling for violence and mayhem ahead of the planned August 1 protest.

    Suleiman Yakubu, 34, a resident of Jos North, Plateau State was seen in a TikTok video inciting the public to attack security operatives and burn down critical State and private infrastructure in Plateau State.

    The suspect in the video was seen addressing those he referred to as “guys ” on how it will be executed. 

    He said: “I think we should begin by the burning the useless filing stations in Jos North, Jos South, Jos East, Jos west then the following day we should move to the bigger markets”.

    Following the release of a TikTok video which was laced with specific messages encouraging violence, the Plateau Police Command trailed and arrested the author on Sunday.

    While in police custody, the suspect confessed to being the one in the video linked to a Tik Tok account, identified as “Dam-Mallam68”.

    A statement by Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) DSP Alfred Alabo confirmed the suspect has made useful and thought provocating confessions while investigation is ongoing.

    He reminded citizens the Police will seriously resist any attempt by mischief makers to plunge the State into chaos.

    Part of the statement reads: “Following the release of a TikTok video that occupied the social media space, stimulating violence in connection with the planned nationwide protest, the Plateau State Police Command has trailed and arrested the author of the inciting video. 

    “On 27/07/2024, the attention of the Command was drawn to the video putatively emanating from a Tik Tok account, identified as “Dam-Mallam68.

    “The suspect in the video was seen assertively inciting the public  to attack security operatives and burn down critical State and private infrastructures in Plateau State as part of the activities for the protest.

    “Based on the strength of the information, the Plateau State Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Olugbemiga Adesina,  sets tactical assets of the Command on motion to trace and apprehend the source of the mischievous video.

    “Consequently, on 28/07/2024 around 11:30 AM, one Suleiman Yakubu (male, aged 34 years) of Jos North, Plateau State who appeared in the viral video was picked at Ahmadu Bello Way, Jos through an impeccable informant. 

    “While in our custody, the suspect confessed to being the one in the video. Meanwhile, investigation is still ongoing.”

    Niger governor begins payment of gratuities to pensioners

    Niger state governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has officially flagged off the payment of N25 billion in gratuities to the first batch of 335 retirees in the state.

    The governor during the flag-off which took place at the premises of the Niger State Pension Board in Minna said that the release of the gratuities was due to the government’s commitment to the welfare of the state’s retired civil servants who had served the state diligently.

    The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Comrade Yakubu Garba, explained that the large sum being earmarked for the payment of the gratuities was due to the non-payment of gratuities by the previous government.

    “The state government in its determination to address all issues affecting pensioners at the state and local government levels has approved and released the sum of N25 billion to clear all outstanding entitlements.

    “It will be recalled that pensions had not been paid in the state for over 9 years leading to a backlog and a substantial financial burden on the government.

    “Hence, the current administration will ensure timely pension payments to prevent such a backlog in the future, and to alleviate the hardships faced by retirees and their families in the past”, he stated.

    The governor also warned against any attempt to tamper with the serial numbers and files of the beneficiaries, stating that anyone caught doing so would be dealt with decisively.

    He noted that the payment process will continue in batches, with the retirees from the local government areas set to receive their cheques starting from July 26th.

    The director-general of the state Pension Board, Alhaji Nasiru Sa’idu Namaska appreciated Governor Bago for introducing the Niger State Pension Administration System (NSPAS), which has paved the way for the commencement of these payments.

    He assured that due process would be followed in the processing of the gratuities adding that everyone who is entitled to their gratuity would receive it.

    On behalf of the retirees, Mr. Idris Zitta expressed heartfelt appreciation to the state government for taking this important step, acknowledging the long-awaited relief it will bring to the lives of the retired civil servants.

    INTERPOL’s recent report amounts to chasing shadows – Group

    A group, South-South Professional & Transparency Initiatives (SSPTI), has faulted the recent viral video released by INTERPOL where individuals and groups in Nigeria were tagged the most active in internet fraud and human trafficking globally, insisting the report was false, baseless and unfounded.

    The body noted that by indicting Black Axe Confraternity (now a non-existing group in Nigeria) in the report shows the desperation of INTERPOL to justify the huge sum of money allocated to it in the ongoing war against cyber crimes and human trafficking, adding that the issue of internet fraud should not be narrowed down to any group, as it cut across all races in the world.

    Making its stand on the INTERPOL report known in a statement, SSPTI, noted that the bias of security outfit against Nigerians was clearly demonstrated in the report as it was targeted at damaging the image of the country, especially the Nigeria Police Force (adjudged the best in the continent) before the international community.

    It further stated that after a thorough analysis of the said report, it had been established that INTERPOL based its findings on assumptions and street gossips, as it could not give a name or show the face of any member of the group that was arrested in connection to the crimes it purportedly lay claims to in the viral video.

    The statement by Dr. Ugochukwu Alozie and Engr. Kayode Ayomide, Chairman and Secretary respectively, the body urged the members of international community to disregard the said report, describing it as the figment of imagination of the  security organization who could not substantiate its claim against the group it mentioned in the viral video released recently.

    SSPTI statement reads in part: “The attention of the above named group has been drawn to the report of a viral video released by INTERPOL where it fingered Nigerians and members of Black Axe Confraternity (A non-existing group) as being responsible for the series of internet fraud and human trafficking recorded across the globe in recent time”.

    “After a careful analysis of the said viral video, we have come to realize that report was false, baseless and unfounded as it was hinged purely on assumptions and third party street gossips to discredit the nation, mostly the Nigeria Police Force (that had been exceptional in crime fighting) before the international community and we want to urged everyone to discountenance the allegations made by the security outfit”.

    “We have every course to believe that the report was fabricated out of desperation by INTERPOL to justify the huge allocation made available as security votes to prosecute the ongoing war against internet fraud and other violent crimes globally”.

    “Is it not laughable that in the entire video where such an allegation against a Confraternity that does no longer exist, as none of its members were paraded to have been arrested rather they are using images of foreigners, mostly women as those arrested even outside the shores of our country”.

    “it is absurd for anyone to want to narrow down those perpetrating cyber crimes and other related offenses to a particular nation and a group, knowing fully well that it’s a global phenomenon involving all the races on the face of the universe and it is even worse off in advanced world as against the developing nations”.

    This collaboration, under the Project TutorED program, aims to provide these children with essential academic and vocational skills, thereby improving their chances for a better and more fulfilling life.

    Now in its 8th year, Project TutorED has consistently demonstrated resilience in its mission to uplift the lives of children in IDP camps, who have been displaced by insecurity, insurgency, and poverty across Nigeria.

    Since its inception, over 700 children have been equipped with profitable skills to support themselves while also attending to their academic needs.

    Commenting on the partnership, the Chairman of Evergreen Initiative, Alli-Bob Cinwon, remarked, “It is difficult and almost impossible to do what we do at Project TutorED and at Evergreen Initiative in general without reliable partners, volunteers, and sponsors.     The Arewa Youth Assembly (AYA) has urged billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote to respect and obey Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) as the country’s regulatory body.

    The group reminded Dangote that before the establishment of his refinery, the NNPCL, NUPRC and NMDPRA had been existing as regulatory bodies.

    “It will be very selfish for Dangote to make them bend protocols to serve his personal interest,” Arewa youth said in a briefing by its Speaker, Mohammed Salihu Danlami in Abuja on Sunday.

    According to the youth group, the billionaire businessman should know these are sectors dealing with regulations and should try to stand by the rules and nothing more.

    “Even the Dangote Group, he heads has its own rules and regulations and all stakeholders must adhere to them.

    “Dangote from our findings wants to detect the Prices crude should be sold to him which is against the principle of world best practice. He wants the Bonny Light crude to be given to him at a rate he wants and wants the NUPRC to selfishly comply with his selfish agenda to force the IOCs to be giving him all the Bonny Light crude oil forgetting it’s a willing buyer-willing-seller relationship.

    “More of our findings show he wants NMDPRA not to license anyone else to bring in product. They said no! He blackmails them and is trying to incite Nigerians against NMDPRA, that they are giving license to marketers who bring in substandard products into the country.

    “We are calling on the National Assembly to make public the Laboratory results from his own refinery to the public because information we are getting from different quarters shows the Product is substandard.
