  • Minister Sulaiman Ibrahim’s love for Nasarawa people

Minister Sulaiman Ibrahim’s love for Nasarawa people

    By Yusuf Abdulkadri

Throughout history, women have played vital roles in holding their communities together, often carrying the weight of responsibility on their shoulders.

Despite facing numerous challenges and obstacles, these women have demonstrated unwavering strength, resilience, and dedication to the well-being of those around them.

One such woman is the Honourable Minister of Police Affairs, State, Hon Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim who represents the good people of Nasarawa in the cabinet of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

As a minister, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim has been delivering her mandate which has reflected on the goodwill enjoyed by Mr President as the first female Police minister.

Apart from her deliverables, the Minister is always at the beck and call of her people in the state knowing fully that sovereignty and legitimacy emanate from the people.

    Some of the key contributions to her communities since taking an appointive position in government include the following;

*Provided scholarship opportunities to indigenes of the State for both local and international graduate and postgraduate studies.

*Created employment opportunities for women and youth at federal government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies

*Support the enlistment of Nasarawa State indigenes into the Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil in Kano State

*Empowerment of over 500 women and youth in skill acquisition in Nasarawa State for self-reliance.

Other recent achievements in the last 1 year in her Policy leadership role as the Minister of State for Police Affairs include:

    * leading an ambitious Renewed Hope Police Reform program, to strengthen internal security in Nigeria.

*Supporting a fast-tracked delivery of the National Criminal Data Fusion Center (NCDFC) for the Nigeria Police Force, which is at an advanced stage of completion

*Championing a strategic shift towards community policing to improve the overall safety and security of our communities.

*Secured commitment to technical assistance and funding from various partners locally and internationally for strengthening the NPF.

*Launched the Young and Secure Project in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, to build trust and promote the relationship between the youth and the Police.

Minister Imaan has demonstrated unwavering commitment, compassion, and kindness, inspiring countless individuals and transforming lives.

Her selflessness is evident in her tireless efforts to support the less privileged, promote education, and foster community development.

Her door is always open, offering a listening ear and a helping hand to those in need.

Her leadership has brought people together, bridging gaps and promoting unity.

Through her initiatives, she has empowered young minds, supported families, and uplifted the community’s spirit.

Her selflessness is a beacon of hope, reminding us that one person can make a difference.

There are plans for more empowerment in Nasarawa Eggon, Keffi, NASARAWA, Lafia, among others.

The people have always felt the kindness of this great woman and hardly will she turn anyone down as long as your requests are genuine and within the ambit of what she can do.

Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim’s position as Minister of State, Police Affairs also limits what she can do in terms of publicity. As a trained security and Human Resources personnel, the majority of her exchanges with the people are discreet just as she is bound by her office to be diplomatic, especially on matters of security.

But she has consistently lifted many especially women and youths from the state and has on many occasions assisted them to be self-sufficient.

Not much can be captured in this piece because of confidentiality but the individual guests, groups that daily throng her office and the number of appreciation plaques that decorates her office are testament to the fact that her kind gestures are appreciated by the people.

As a minister, just last week, Nasarawa had the privilege of hosting the second edition of the nationwide community policing town hall meeting which was widely attended. The occasion was also preceded by a huge empowerment of the people by the Honourable Minister with the communities dancing and praising her for uplifting them.

Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim is a strong advocate of fostering inclusivity and diversity. She encourages representation, participation, and equal opportunities for all segments of the community. She builds relationships, listens to concerns, and responds to needs, ensuring that the community feels heard and valued.

And she will do more for her people and her larger constituents, Nigeria by implementing policy frameworks that will position the Nigerian Police Force as the best in Africa.

  • Yobe sets pace, votes 5%of budget for IDPs

Yobe sets pace, votes 5%of budget for IDPs

    …receives applause from international community

The Yobe state government has launched its inaugural policy dedicated to internally displaced persons (IDPs), marking a significant milestone in addressing their needs within the state.

The policy commits 5 percent of the state budget to tackle the challenges confronting IDPs and their host communities.

Built upon humanitarian principles of humanity, neutrality, and independence, the policy outlines strategic goals aimed at safeguarding, providing essential services, and promoting sustainable solutions for displaced individuals in the state.

It also underscores the rights of all displaced persons, with a special emphasis on women, children, and other vulnerable groups, ensuring their active participation in decision-making processes.

During the launch in Abuja on Thursday, July 4, Governor Mai Mala Buni highlighted the policy’s significance in addressing the complex challenges posed by the Boko Haram insurgency and natural disasters, which have devastated infrastructure, healthcare, education, and livelihoods in the region.

He said the crisis has also forced thousands of the States’ citizens to flee their homes, creating a massive humanitarian crisis that demands an organized and strategic response to provide support to the affected persons and communities.

He, however, noted that the policy was the result of extensive consultations with various stakeholders, including UN agencies, the World Bank, the Federal Government of Nigeria, local communities, non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, traditional rulers, and the displaced persons themselves.

He said: “This policy embodies our collective determination to protect the rights and dignity of IDPs, offering them a pathway to regain their stability and rebuild their lives towards a durable solution.

“By prioritising the holistic wellbeing of IDPs, we aim to foster sustainable development and promote peace and stability within our state and across Nigeria”.

The governor assured stakeholders of transparency and accountability throughout the policy’s implementation, saying, “We recognize that the success of this policy hinges on the concerted efforts of all sectors of society, including government agencies, civil society, the private sector, and international partners”.

The policy’s launch was met with commendations from development partners, including the World Bank and the North East Ambassador, among others

Cynthia Rowe, Chair of the North-East Ambassadors Group and Head of Development Cooperation for the United Kingdom in Nigeria commended Yobe for its inclusive approach and commitment to voluntary and informed relocation of IDPs.

“It honors people’s rights, it honors their dignity, and it gives them a better chance of restarting their lives with the support of the communities around them.

“Yobe is leading the way in support for internationally displaced persons on that. So Yobe was the first state to domesticate the national policy, tailoring the policy to its own context and communities.

“And as a group, we just want to strongly commend the inclusivity of your approach across IDPs to host communities, to civil society, and alongside government agencies as well,” she added

Rowe assured continued support from the international community, emphasizing the importance of partnerships in mobilizing resources and expertise to effectively implement the policy.

“We will continue with our technical assistance, cooperate on security, and support life-saving humanitarian and development objectives,” she said.

SOLID Project Coordinator, Suleiman Dauda presented an overview of the policy document, explaining its focus on protecting citizens from displacement and providing assistance during rehabilitation, return, reintegration, and relocation.

He highlighted that the policy aligns with national and international laws on internal displacement, using a human rights-based approach.

The policy aims to protect, assist, and reintegrate IDPs in compliance with national and international standards.

It includes principles such as protecting IDPs’ dignity and rights, supporting their involvement in decision-making, and ensuring their access to basic needs like shelter, food, water, healthcare, and education.

While presenting an overview of the policy document, the Project Coordinator, Suleiman Dauda said the policy framework and scope examined displacement stages from pre-emergency to recovery (rehabilitation, reintegration, return, and relocation) for durable solutions, thereby emphasising Yobe State Commitment to protect citizens from displacement and provide assistance during their rehabilitation, return, reintegration, and relocation.

On the commitment of more funds to the IDPs’ issues, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Baba Mallam Wali said the State government is committing 5% of its budget to the IDPs, separate from the statutory budgetary provisions for the fiscal year.

This is also without prejudice to the statutory budgetary allocations to infrastructure development and expansion, rural construction, education, health, water supply, and other infrastructure facilities, he noted.

“This has shown the determination and commitment to the ownership of the Policy by the State government which was the reason for committing a lot of money to that cause.

“Having been convinced by the direction of the government, our State’s Legislature as well as our development partners and international agencies have all committed to support the Policy as indicated earlier by them,” he added.

Group tasks House on passage of shippers regulatory bill

The Coalition for Good Governance and Leadership (CGGL) has appealed to the House of Representatives to ensure the speedy passage of the proposed repeal and re-enactment of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council and Economic Regulatory Bill.

In a statement by its president, Dr Ogunbiyi Oguntola, the CSO said this will promote economic growth, strengthen the regulatory framework for the maritime industry, and enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council.

Oguntola commended the Hon. Abdussamad Dasuki-led committee on Shipping Services for a job well done during the public hearing which accommodated all shades of opinion leaders and critical stakeholders to make inputs into the bill.

“The new bill seeks to repeal the existing Nigerian Shippers’ Council Act and enact a new Shippers’ Council and Economic Regulatory Act, which aims to strengthen the regulatory framework for the maritime industry, promote economic growth, and protect the rights of shippers and other stakeholders,” he added.

“The passage of this bill is critical to the growth and development of the maritime industry and the nation’s economy. The bill’s benefits include enhanced efficiency and effectiveness of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, leading to improved regulation and oversight of the maritime industry.

“It will also promote competition and innovation in the maritime industry, leading to reduced costs and improved services for shippers and other stakeholders.

“Additionally, it will protect the rights of shippers and other stakeholders, leading to increased confidence and investment in the maritime industry.

“Furthermore, it will increase revenue generation for the government, leading to improved funding for infrastructure development and other public services, and create jobs and economic opportunities for Nigerians, leading to improved economic growth and development.

“The bill will address the current challenges facing the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, including the lack of an enabling law to back up its status as a Port Economic Regulator. This has hindered the agency’s ability to enforce sanctions on ports and shipping stakeholders in the nation’s maritime sector.”

The CSO urged the House to expedite the passage of this bill, which it says is critical to the growth and development of the maritime industry and the nation’s economy.
