Ado Bayero: Tribute to my dad

Today is the tenth anniversary of the passing of the longest reigning monarch in the history of Kano emirate.

As a daughter words can’t describe how much I miss your warm smile, soft voice and gentle presence. A father is a daughter’s first love and the day he dies is her greatest sorrow.

As a little girl I never knew how powerful and adored you were by so many people I just knew I love to sit on Papa’s lap watching T.V while we shared a can of your favourite and my favourite soda 7UP.

Your love of documentaries was so frustrating to me back then i always thought why does dad watch boring documentary channels and CNN but today as grown woman it makes a great man had to be aware of the economic, political, social, scientific and business of the world around him.

Ado bayero was born to the sullubawa clan of the Dabo dynasty. A man of great pedigree. The young prince grew up to be a peacemaker and a great father in Nigeria’s history.

He made friends with a diverse groups of people of different nationalities and religious backgrounds.

As an emir he experienced several challenges and political foes but was always a class act.

The greatest test of he’s role as a Leader was keeping peace during the coup and counter coup of the 1960s in which he’s friendship with the late Chukwuemeka Ojukwu was instrumental in bringing peace in darkest time in Nigeria’s history.

From military regimes to the democratic era he’s reign was a lifetime of grace and dignity. Political, traditional and religious leaders sought he’s wisdom and he never faltered in he’s dedication to serving he’s people and Nigeria.

Today I hope people apply he’s glorious legacy.

  • Islamic scholar accuses Gov Yusuf, Kwankwaso of prioritising politics over governance

Islamic scholar accuses Gov Yusuf, Kwankwaso of prioritising politics over governance

A young Islamic scholar in Kano State, Mallam Isa Ibrahim, has alleged the duo of Governor Abba Yusuf and former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso is not interested in the governance of Kano State but politics.

The cleric claimed that Governor Yusuf is only running errands for Kwankwaso whom he alleged is bent on asserting vengeance on perceived political enemies at the expense of peace and development in Kano State.

Addressing his congregation recently in Tudun Wada, Kano, Mallam Ibrahim, noted that the dangerous politics that Governor Yusuf and his godfather Kwankwaso are playing has brought untold hardship to the state.

He said: “Recently, Kano people were made to watch from the sidelines as other state were celebrating the achievements of their Governors in the last one year. It’s unfortunate that the Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf and the power behind the throne, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have chose playing crass politics over provision of good governance,” he lamented.

“Despite the huge monthly allocation the current administration receives from the federal government, there is nothing on ground to show for it. Even the N5 billion palliative released to each state by the federal government to cushion the impact of the removal of the petrol subsidy is not felt by Kano people. Instead Governor Yusuf and his godfather used the resources meant for Kano people to enrich themselves, their cronies, and sponsor attacks on perceived political enemies.

“Even after one year in office, Governor Yusuf is still blaming the past administration for his failures. Whereas, he is the one who has failed to consolidate on the achievements of his predecessor, Abdullahi Ganduje. The poor standard of education, health care services, and infrastructural decay in Kano are pointers to that.

“Truth must be told, Governor Yusuf and his godfather Kwankwaso are not interested in the governance of Kano State but politics. Right from the inception of his administration, the governor has always demonstrated that. Immediately after assuming office, without looking at government records, he went ahead with the demolition of shops, businesses and people’s homes simply because most of the properties were developed during the administration of his predecessor, Ganduje.

“After failing in his bid to push the blame for his poor performance to his predecessor with baseless corruption allegations, Governor Yusuf has now resolved to stirring Emirship crisis in the state to distract citizens from his monumental failures as Governor.

“One of the popular sayings of Kano people right now is that Governor Yusuf is an errand boy to Kwankwaso. The Governor himself has proved that by appointing godfather’s children into his administration and taking directives from the former Governor. Governor Yusuf and Kwankwaso are leading Kano to hell. They have made life a living hell for Kano people. Should Kano people be made to suffer because Kwankwaso lost the 2023 presidential election to President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu? Is Kwankwaso’s political ambition worth the sufferings of millions of Kano citizens? Is governance all about political vendetta or provision of basic social amenities?

“Kano people have suffered enough in the hands of Governor Yusuf and his godfather Kwankwaso. Even their party, the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, has passed a vote of no confidence on Governor Yusuf. Governor Yusuf should retrace his steps and do the needful. Governance should be the number one priority or agenda on his table as far as Kano state is concerned. He should also remember that no government lasts forever.”

Adamawa targets self-sufficiency in food production, launches agric project

Adamawa state has rolled out an agricultural development initiative tailored at empowering farmers for greater productivity.

The state seeks by the project to reposition itself as the food basket of the North East, producing enough for its citizens and making surplus available to neighbouring states.

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, flagging off the distribution of agricultural inputs and machines to farmers as part of the incentives, said his government is committed to rejuvenating the agricultural sector for economic growth and welfare of the people.

Fintiri who was represented by his deputy, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta, stressed that the flag-off of the distribution of vital agricultural livelihood support provided by the state project coordination office of the Multisectoral Crisis Recovery Project (MCRP), is a significant milestone.

“Under the purview of the MCRP, my government has made substantial investment in revitalizing key agricultural infrastructure in the state,” Fintiri said, naming some projects that the government has or is executing in the revitalization process.

Also speaking during the agricultural livelihood intervention flag-off, the state project coordinator of the MCRP, Dr Maurice Vunobollki, said the agricultural input and equipment provided for distribution were

aimed at boosting agricultural production for 40,000 households through 1,000 cooperative societies.

Vunobolki explained that the distribution covers mini-mechanized farm tools as well as certified maize, rice, and soya bean seeds.

“The items and equipment to be distributed starting from today are more than just resources; they are symbols of hope and renewal for our farmers,” the project coordinator said, stressing that the project would empower the women and youths who are the backbone of agriculture but who have been affected by insurgency and other challenges to reclaim their livelihoods.

  • Idoma group reports Benue Gov to international community over alleged marginalisation

Idoma group reports Benue Gov to international community over alleged marginalisation

A group under the aegis of Idoma Proactive Diaspora Coalition (IPDC) said it has reported Benue Governor Hyacinth Alia to the international community over alleged continuous marginalisation of the Idoma ethnic group.

The group made this known in a statement by its President, Dr. Alechenu Amali, in Abuja, stating it believes only God or the international community can reverse the trend.

The group stated after Senator George Akume left office as Governor, all the positions that used to be reserved for the Idoma have gone to the Tiv ethnic group.

It lamented, despite the massive votes to Alia by Idoma people of Benue South, the Governor has given the minority ethnic groups the worst treatment ever meted to them.

“Unfortunately, Fr. Alia was voted massively by the Idoma people, thinking that as a clergyman he would be fair to the minority, but he has even become worse.

” The Idoma people have now given up and can only go back to God or cry to the International Community,” he said.

According to the group, Governor Alia has marginalised the Idoma people in terms of appointments and projects, as all major appointments and projects have gone to the Tiv ethnic group,  including rural roads which have awarded only in Tiv land.

Amali alleged choice offices like the  Secretary to the Benue State Government, SSG, Commissioner of Works, Commissioner of Education, Commissioner of Health and Human Services, Special Adviser to the Governor on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs were all Tiv people.

He also mentioned the Benue Investment and Property Company, (BIPC), Benue Internal Revenue Service(BIRS), Local Government Service Commission, Benue State Urban Development Board, Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Vice-Chancellor of Benue State University(BSU), Benue State Examination Board, Benue Links Nigerian Limited, Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project(RAAMP),  and a host of other juicy offices as those occupied by Tiv people under the Alia administration.

The group further alleged Alia was vigorously pursuing the ethnic persecution of Idoma people with the intention of relegating them to an unimportant or powerless position in the state.

It pointed out Dr. Nathaniel Oche, who was appointed as Rector of the Benue State Polytechnic, Ugbokolo, for a five- year tenure by the administration of Chief Samuel Ortom was removed by Governor Alia less than six months in office, a Tiv man, Engr. Dr. Emmanuel Barki, has been appointed as Rector in acting capacity, whereas Tiv people have already been appointed in substantive capacity in state institutions where a Tiv man was sacked.

Dr. Amali questioned why the Governor has allowed a Tiv man to continue in Acting capacity as Rector where an Idoma man was removed within six months in office but same Governor was quick to appoint a Tiv man in substantive capacity where a Tiv man was sacked.

The group appealed to Alia to purge himself of alleged ethnic chauvinism and favoritism, maintaining that, as a cleric, Alia ought to be fair to all without persecuting or marginalising any ethnic group.

Senator Natasha flags off construction of new schools in Kogi Central

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central senatorial district, on Sunday, June 2, flagged off the construction of new schools in Osara for the Hausa/Fulani community.

    A statement issued by her

Chief Press Secretary Arogbonlo IsraelIsrael, revealed that the senator equally flagged off the reconstruction and remodeling of Abdul Azeez Atta Memorial College, Okene (AAAMCO).

The senator mentioned that the reconstruction and remodeling of AAAMCO aims to elevate the school to one of the most advanced secondary schools in Nigeria.

The reconstruction project includes the complete renovation and upgrade of all deteriorated structures within the school. It also involves the construction of new facilities such as a Biology laboratory, Agronomy laboratory, Mechatronics laboratory, CBT centre, amphitheatre, music studio, art and craft studio, staff quartres, sports centre, as well as the provision of furniture and equipment for all the new facilities.

Additionally, a 0.7 km road network within the school premises, perimeter fencing, streetlights, water supply, and total rehabilitation of the hostels are part of the project. The school will also be upgraded to a smart school with electrified classrooms and digital learning devices for every student.

AAAMCO is one of the first secondary schools in Northern Nigeria established in 1927 as the Central School Okene before changing its name to Provincial Secondary School Okene, after which it became Government Secondary School Okene and lastly AAAMCO.

This institution schools President Ibrahim Babangida, Professor Jerry Gana, Professor Lai Mohammed, Alhaji Babagana Kingibe amongst many notable alumni.

The lawmaker also mentioned that similar attention would be given to other schools in the senatorial district in a bid to them into smart schools.

Furthermore, Sen. Akpoti-Uduaghan flagged off the construction of primary and secondary schools in Osara for the Hausa/Fulani community, fulfilling her campaign promises to them.

Once completed, the new schools in Osara will include blocks for primary and secondary schools, administrative buildings, libraries and laboratories, staff quarters, a clinic, sports facilities, and boreholes.

According to her, the reconstruction and the remodelling was approved by the federal government.

“Education is extremely important. I wouldn’t have been here if there was no school for my father to acquire an education and give me the best education I have.

She added that similar attention would be given to other schools in the senatorial district, promising to remodel them into smart schools.

In same vein, the senator said the flag off of primary and secondary schools in Osara for Hausa/Fulani community is a fulfilment of her campaign promises to them and an answer to their request when they met with her before the 2023 senatorial election.

Speaking on behalf of Hausa/Fulani community, the Youth leader, Miyetti Allah Kogi State chapter, Dr Nuhu Abubakar Jalido, said the gesture is an opportunity for Hausa/Fulani children to have access to quality education at their doorstep.

“This is the first time a senator in Kogi is building primary and secondary schools with the necessary facilities in a Hausa/Fulani camp. Your actions show you are different. This will change our people’s ideology and enable them to acquire quality education and contribute meaningfully to the country’s development,” he said.

  • Gov Yusuf using Bayero’s removal to cover up non-performance, says group

Gov Yusuf using Bayero’s removal to cover up non-performance, says group

The Arewa Truth and Justice Iniative has accused Kano Governor, Abba Yusuf of using the removal of Emir Ado Bayero to divert attention from what it described as his monumental failure in office for one year.

Yusuf sparked outrage after signing the Kano State Emirate Council Repeal Bill into law, abolishing the five emirates in the state and reinstating the former Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II.

In a statement  by its Coordinator, Comrade Momoh Idoko, Arewa Truth and Justice Iniative insisted that the controversial law was all a plot by the Governor to distract Kano people from his failure in office.

Comrade Idoko said Governor Yusuf attempted to insult the intelligence of Kano people by pulling such shenanigan.

He commended Kano people for not falling for the propaganda and also for rejecting the purported removal of the substantive Emir Ado Bayero.

The group urged the Governor to retrace his steps and start carrying out his duties of providing good governance to Kano people rather than relying on shenanigans to cover his failures.

The group said: “The Arewa Truth and Justice Initiative is saddened by Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf’s treacherous attempt to undermine the traditional institution in the state in a bid to cover his monumental failure in office as Governor for one year,” the statement said.

“We are not surprised at his woeful performance in Kano State, however, his decision to use the purported removal of Emir Ado Bayero to divert attention from his failure in office is a new low.

“Governor Yusuf started on a wrong foot by going against the very essence of governance which is the people. With just three weeks into his administration, without looking at government records, he went ahead with the demolition of shops, businesses and people’s homes. The Governor neglected his primary duty of providing good governance to the people of Kano, instead choosing to witch-hunt perceived political enemies while the state slips into penury.

“Available data and reports have shown that Kano State is currently one of the worst governed state in Nigeria. A recent assessments of the performances of all the governors sworn in on May 29, 2023, showed that Governor Yusuf of Kano State is rating very poor. The report stated that there’s nothing on ground to show that he is doing anything at all to alleviate the challenges that the people of the state are going through; educationally, developmentally, economically, security and otherwise.

“In a desperate bid to cover his failures on the day of reckoning; his one year in office, Governor Yusuf decided to distract Kano people with the purported abolishment of the five emirates of the state. We commend the people of Kano for not falling for the trick and rejecting the purported removal of the substantive Emir Ado Bayero.

“We urge Governor Yusuf to stop playing games and focus on providing good governance for the people of Kano state. There a need for him to have a rethink and properly define his agenda in the next three years that he is going to spend as the governor of Kano state. Because from all indications it seems he is not well prepared. Kano people deserve better and the Governor must sit up and focus on carrying out his duties rather than embarking on meaningless vendetta and relying on shenanigans to cover his failures.”

  • Activists to EFCC: those calling for Yahaya Bello’s arrest ‘tools in hands of desperate political actors’

Activists to EFCC: those calling for Yahaya Bello’s arrest ‘tools in hands of desperate political actors’

Scores of activists hit the streets of Lagos on Saturday demanding an end to what they described as the mischievous use of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) platform to malign perceived enemies by opposition forces.

The activists, who frowned at the consistent call for anarchy in a democratic setting by those that their investigations had established to be working for known opposition figures in Kogi State, called on the EFCC to ignore the “sponsored, desperate calls” and focus on toeing the path of the rule of law.

The over 80 Human Rights Civil Society Organisations, under the broad umbrella of Citizens Action Against Lawlessness, said those calling for the EFCC to ignore an ongoing court process and forcefully arrest a defendant, former Governor Yahaya Bello, were not only ignorant of the rule of law and up to some mischief, but also tools in the hands of desperate political actors to rubbish the integrity of the Commission.

While commending the EFCC for heeding the calls of reasonable, unbiased Nigerians and CSOs for the Commission to correct past mistakes and avoid disregard for the rule of law, the activists labelled those calling for Yahaya Bello’s arrest as anarchists who the EFCC boss must be wary of.

“The same way this particular group of people have spread falsehood against judges, who they earlier boasted were for them, against prominent figures perceived to be close to President Bola Tinubu, and against APC governors that they felt were supporting them during the election in Kogi and at the Tribunal, is the same way they will turn against the EFCC boss with baseless allegations. It is their stock in trade. The EFCC boss and other relevant authorities must detect this and put them in their place,” Segun Abegunde, Co-Convener of the Joint CSOs platform, said.

Abegunde, who is also the Coordinator of the South West Progressive Youths Organisation stated: “We insist that this is beyond corruption investigation but political persecution. Some sponsored anarchists still went to the EFCC Zonal office today to call on the Commission to use military force to attack the defendant’s known residences and abduct him. There have been insinuations that they are even planning to use fake soldiers in order to inflict maximum damage.”

“The target of these anarchists is to provoke crisis so that a state of emergency can be declared in the state. If they’ve lost at the polls and at the Tribunal, they most likely think they can create a crisis that will still serve their purpose. Why the desperation to hunt the man down at all costs?

“Many who understand the politics in the state know that these calls are nothing more than a revenge mission for a botched Igala agenda, believed to be the sole fault of Bello, as well as a way for other political enemies in the state to get their pound of flesh,” the activists noted.

According to them: “These anarchists” must be called to order as they have allowed their insatiable appetite for revenge turn them into agents of destruction for the country.

“We call on President Bola Tinubu to call on the security agencies to be at alert as nothing bad must happen to Yahaya Bello or any of his family members.

“Let the courts decide Yahaya Bello’s fate. Desperate opposition forces should not plot to kill him by all means. We demand due court processes. We say no to political persecution. We say no to opposition politicians using EFCC to attack Yahaya Bello who they consider their political enemy.

“EFCC must avoid anarchists bent on tarnishing its image. They should rather sharpen their political skills and leave the anti-graft agency alone. We will always give our unflinching support to the EFCC to carry out its duties strictly in line with the rule of the same law that set it up,” the activists said.

Insecurity: Coalition of northern groups engages artists, social media influencers

Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) meets actors, musicians and social media influencers to carve out a role for them in the fight against insecurity in the region.

The meeting took place at Bristol Palace Hotel, Kano on Thursday May 30, 2024, with the theme: ‘Changing the Narrative of Insecurity in Northern Nigeria: The roles of artists, social media influencers and bloggers in promoting peace and security in the region.’

The meeting is one among the several meetings being organised by the CNG that bring together various stakeholders such as northern state governors, traditional rulers, security agents and religious leaders among others.

Board of Trustee (BoT) Chairman of the CNG, Dr. Nastura Ashir, who is also host of the engagement, said Nigerian entertainers and media influencers have a very important role to play in the fight against insecurity in the north.

“We have addressed all stakeholders on the issue of insecurity that include traditional rulers, governors, security agents and I insist that the entertainment industry has a major role to play.

“We appreciate the fact that in resolving problems there are kinetic and non kinetic ways. The kinetic means only involves 30 percent of the efforts while the non kinetic takes over 70 percent.

“This is the reason why the entertainers have a major role to play in this battle. The social media influencers for example have very wide reach out to the public” he stated.

He explained that lack of synergy between Air force and the Military, between Police and DSS and between Federal Government and State Governments in the fight against Insecurities was a hindrance.

“This disagreement and lack of synergy between Air force and the Military, sometimes ago resulted in the death of over 300 people in Zamfara State, because when the ground Military wanted to attack they informed the Air force for a collaborative mission but because of disagreement those number of innocent lives were killed,” he recalled.

The chairman of the of the occasion Alhaji Ibrahim Ahmad, a former Director General of the Department of State Service (DSS), said the meeting will create a synergy between the stakeholders and the celebrities on how to tackle the security challenges in the region.

“We are going to have a synergy of all critical stakeholders in fighting insecurity and the entertainment industry must be deeply involved.

“They will also be useful in addressing the problems of drug abuse and thuggery as well,” he Ahmad stated.

Former Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Secretary General, Salisu Yakasai, said that insecurity has been used to underdevelop the north “and this is affecting us socially and economically.”

“Today, in each of the Northern States there is one social vice or the other. That is why the need for a new strategy and approach in the fight against insecurity should be adopted,” he added.

Coalition advocates 12 years of free education for girls

A coalition of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) working to raise awareness on girl – child education in the country has advocated 12 years of free, safe and quality education for school age girls.

The coalition, National Working Group on Basic and Senior Secondary Education, said by doing so, the country would be taking significant steps towards a brighter future for all Nigerians.

The current extant basic education law provides for nine years of free and compulsory education for all Nigerians.

The coalition, which comprises Plan International; Invictus Africa; Save the Children Nigeria; Accountability Lab Nigeria; ImpactHouse and Connected Development made the demand at a media briefing to mark President Bola Tinubu’s one year in office.

Other members of the coalition included: ACE Charity; Onelife Initiative; Education As a Vaccine; Centre For Girls Education; Basic; Right Watch; PAGED Initiative; Civil Society Action Coalition on Education For All; Aid for Rural Education Access Initiative (AREAi); Bridge Connect Africa; Unique Care and Support Foundation (CASFOD); Eduplana; Girl Child Concerns and Centre LSD.

Other demands put forward for President Tinubu and Governors to address included making schools safe and secure for children; aligning education strategy by both Federal and State Governments; providing more and better funding for the sector; ending learning poverty and addressing the country’s rising number of out – of – school children.

Country Director, Plan International Nigeria, Charles Usie, said: “As we look ahead, let us remember that the education of our girls is not just a policy issue or just a human right requirement; it is a moral imperative.

“It is about ensuring that every girl in Nigeria has the opportunity to reach her full potential, to contribute to her community and to help build a stronger and more prosperous nation.

“We urge President Bola Tinubu and all state governors to prioritise girls education in their agenda. Let us work together to make all basic schooling up to senior secondary free, to fund our schools more and better and to ensure that every school is a safe place for learning.

“By doing so, we will be taking significant steps towards a brighter future for all Nigerians.”

Executive Director, Invictus Africa, Bukky Shonibare lauded president Tinubu’s commitment to education, especially girl- child education.

She however urged Tinubu to mobilise state governments to work in tandem with his (Tinubu’s) commitments to education as captured in his manifesto.

Shonibare said: “We commend President Tinubu for his consistent public commitment to education, especially girls education. However, knowing that state governments are the implementing units of his vision and roadmap, he (Tinubu) needs to mobilise, facilitate and coordinate state governors to work in tandem with his commitments to education as captured in the Education for Renewed Hope: Roadmap for the Nigerian Education Sector (2024-2027).

“This collaboration is particularly crucial at the senior secondary education level, where there are significant challenges that are currently seldom talked about.”

  • Emir of Kano and politicisation of the traditional institution

Emir of Kano and politicisation of the traditional institution

By HRH King Appolus Chu, OFR

The unfolding drama concerning the throne of the Emir of Kano is becoming quite worrisome. It is clearly a situation that shows just how much politicians are overstepping into areas where they ought not to encroach, especially when it concerns the traditional institution.

There are a few traditional stools in Nigeria that are revered and venerated in the country and beyond, not just for the clout, profile and sacredness surrounding them, but also because of their rich and long history as well as the size of the domain under the influence of such stools, which has earned them a lot of respect and glory. The throne of the Emir of Kano is one of such stools.

Sadly, in recent times we have become witnesses to how political office holders have used their power of incumbency to interfere with the traditional order of the people and make mockery of the revered stool.

The stool of the Emir of Kano predates colonialism and the creation of the Nigerian state. Such a revered stool isn’t something that can easily be tampered with without the fear of breakdown of law and order. The situation of Kano can be described as a pot tittering on the edge of toppling over, if politicians do not stop toying with it.

In Nigeria, it goes without saying that the traditional institution is the last hope of the people. As a matter of fact, it is the traditional institution that serves as the very foundation for our Nigerianness, which is why in filling most official forms we always find columns that require the endorsements of our traditional rulers. Let us also not forget that the entity known as Nigeria would not exist if the British did not first either sign treaties with or defeat our monarchs and their people in battle. It is a credit to the wisdom of the British that they recognized that they would have struggled ceaselessly in trying to govern the country if they did not recognize the natural and traditional authority of the people, to which the people were already accustomed, hence they did not dare eradicate the traditional institution.

Also, it is to their traditional rulers that the people turn when they lose confidence in government. And the government itself relies on the traditional institution to maintain its hold over the people, because it knows that the people always listen to their traditional rulers. When any administration loses control over the public and there is some form of riot or mob action that threatens the collapse of law and order, it is to the traditional institution that both the government and the people turn for direction and guidance.

That is because of the respect the people have for their traditional stools, which they regard not only as the throne of their kings, but also as the seat of their cultural and religious values. But in a situation where political office holders begin to overreach and attempt to usurp the ancestral and ancient powers of the traditional stools, where will the common man and the government fall back to when issues arise that need the intervention of the traditional institution?

The case in Kano is a situation where political office holders are beginning to politicize the traditional institution, thereby taking away the glory, honour, beauty and prestige of the monarchy; consequently eroding the respect the people have for the throne as well as the control and influence the throne has over the people.

We have had instances in this country where both military and civil administrations deposed or dethroned traditional rulers at a whim and the sole interest of whoever was in control of the government of the state or country at the time. In a situation where the stool of the Sultan of Sokoto, the Emir of Kano or any other traditional stool in the country can easily be tampered with by politicians then it is possible for an administration to wake up one morning and decide to proscribe the traditional institution as a whole. That seems to be the direction in which things are going. If the politicians keep having their way in this regard, can they control the people as effectively as the traditional institution is doing?

I am from the southern part of the country and I am not in support of what is going on in Kano, because it is a big disrespect to the traditional institution. When they removed Lamido Sanusi as Emir of Kano, no traditional ruler was happy about it, because it’s not about the person on the stool, but about tampering with the sacredness of the throne of the emirate. Unfortunately, the situation today is such that most traditional rulers are scared to talk about what is going on in Kano.

They cannot talk because they don’t know if the administration or political office holders will use whatever they say against them. Already, traditional rulers cannot leave their domains for short trips outside their states, even when such trips involve family occasions like the weddings of their children, without obtaining the permission of their governors.

Political office holders have so rough-handled most of our traditional stools and their occupants to the point that, although the titles still remain, they are nothing more than ceremonial offices, devoid of real power and influence.

Our monarchs no longer have the courage to talk to their subjects who are politicians and advise them when they are going astray, for fear that such politicians may end up holding grudges against them if they do not like their counsel. And, as our recent political history has shown, if the politician eventually finds his way into political office tomorrow, may use that grudge against the traditional ruler to do everything to reduce that traditional ruler to nothing – all because of something that happened some years ago. That is how bad it is. Hence, our royal fathers have been cowed into silence by their political sons, and that is probably one reason for the dysfunctional state of affairs in our country today as our political office holders now see themselves as all-wise and all-conquering overlords who do not need the counsel of anyone.

In the face of the current happenings in Kano, traditional rulers cannot remain on the fence and keep quiet as if it does not concern them. Yes, it is commendable that some of us are making moves to certain political quarters in our individual capacities, but that is not enough. It will make more impact in the face of situations like this when the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria calls an emergency meeting of all the traditional rulers of the country and pays a visit to the President or the Governor of the state and speaks out as a unified voice on the matter. It will definitely send a stronger message on the need to respect the traditional institution. But when we do not talk and every traditional ruler pretends as if nothing is wrong, because they feel they are safe in their own domains in the present administration then we should consider ourselves as nothing more than traditional rulers for just a moment. By that I mean that if the administration in power is happy with you for the moment, good luck to you. But if the next administration is headed by someone your forefathers offended years ago or someone who doesn’t have you in their good books, then chances are that you will be dethroned and humiliated by that political office holder.

It is indeed sad that the traditional rulers of the country cannot come together as one body to make a statement when situations like this arise, when even commercial motorcycle riders, market sellers and every other group have associations and unions that protect their members. The National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria is the umbrella association of traditional rulers in the country. It should function as an institution for the protection of the sanctity of the traditional institution. We should speak out and condemn the politicization of the traditional institution. If we are not doing that or cannot do so, then we should consider ourselves as only enjoying the privilege we have while it lasts, because the next administration to come may not like our face.

The reality of the traditional institution in Nigeria today is that it has become politicized and political office holders are digging their way into the traditional institution, dethroning monarchs they don’t like and using the sacred thrones of the people to settle or compensate their political friends. Even in situations where the stool is hereditary or rotates among a particular family, politicians can easily raise another person from the family who is their friend, to take the throne instead of the rightful person; regardless of whether their appointee is prepared or has been groomed to become a monarch or not.

Lastly, I did not expect Lamido Sanusi to come back to resume office as Emir of Kano. The reason being that the stool of Emir of Kano is the glory of their family, and by the time the family succumbs to a situation where persons who are not part of the royal family begin to toss the stool about from one royal family member to the other, then they have lost the dignity and completely watered down the prestige, glory and sacredness of the stool. That is nothing but making a mockery of the throne. He and every other member of the royal family ought to understand that it is only when the throne is powerful that they can enjoy the glory of being royalty. But when they allow others to commonize the throne, then there is nothing for them to glory about because they have become like every other family.

A unified emirate signals a stronger throne. I expected that since the emirate has been re-consolidated into one and no longer fragmented, Sanusi would have had the integrity and strength of character to ask whoever is on the unified throne to continue. And this he would have done, for the sake of maintaining their dignity as members of the royal family. Such a sacrifice would uphold the sanctity of the throne and showcase his personality as one who is interested in preserving the relevance and glory of the throne more than his own personal interest. The ball is in his court to pay the price for the sustainability of the glory of their royal family, after all it is on record that he has once been the emir and that honour can never be taken away from him.

As a respected statesman, Islamic scholar, promoter of peace and advocate of having things done the right way, he ought to look beyond his personal interest to focus on boosting respect for the throne. There is a saying that an elder cannot sit at home to watch the pregnant tethered goat struggling to give birth. Their revered ancestral stool must not be treated with levity in his time.

Indeed the honourable thing would be for him to concede the throne to his cousin, Aminu Ado-Bayero, who is already on the throne, instead of dragging him out to occupy the throne, thereby turning the integrity of what their forefathers laboured to establish into a soap opera. Such an act will surely win him the commendation, respect and celebration of all Nigerians for years and generations to come.
