Eight sustain injuries in Plateau truck accident

At least eight persons sustained serious injuries when a truck collided with several other cars at Polo Roundabout in the Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.
According to an eyewitness account, the incident happened on Friday at about 8:00 a.m., when a truck loaded with goods suddenly lost control and rammed into vehicles on its path.
The driver of the truck was said to have lost control of the break while on top speed.
The Plateau State Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Alphonsus Godwin, who confirmed the accident, said the truck lost its break precisely at the Polo roundabout while the driver, who could not control the truck anymore, rammed it into other vehicles within the vicinity.

Mr. Godwin said the driver of the truck hit five other cars and commercial tricycles before it finally rammed into an eatery called “Karibacho” at the University of Jos Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
“Our men who got to the scene on time were able to rescue the occupants of the truck. They were three: two were rescued immediately, and the third one took a long time. They were taken to the Bingham Teaching Hospital for treatment. Five other persons in the other vehicles also sustained various degrees of injuries.
“Apart from the eight people who sustained injuries, no deaths were recorded. We are appealing to traders who always mill around the area to leave the area, as the roundabout is always prone to accidents.

Experts seek collaboration to address economic issues in Niger Delta

Stakeholders in the Niger Delta have called for collaboration to restore peace to the region amid present economic challenges.

One of the stakeholders and Executive Director, Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in Niger Delta (PIND), Tunji Idowu said there was a need for government to work together with organisations in the region to ensure that present economic hardship doesn’t snowball into crisis.

Idowu stated this during the inauguration of the board of Partners for Peace (P4P) in the Niger Delta.

He said: “If there are economic challenges there will be the likelihood of conflict ensuing. If people are not able to find ways to improve their livelihood or sustain the current one some will open themselves to crime so the government has to address the root causes.

“Some of our programmes were designed to address these even before the current economic challenges. We need to have all partners work together, stretch the limited resources, eliminate duplications and redundancies. We need everyone coming together to address the issues in the region.”

Idowu, who is the Chairman of the new board of P4P, said the present board would build on the achievements of the previous one.

“This current board will build on the accomplishment of the previous board. Through P4P, the region is more stable than before,” he added.

Also, PIND’s Peace Building Program Manager, David Udofia called for collaboration to sustain peace in the region.

He said: “Everybody in the country has a role to play to restore peace in the Niger Delta. All stakeholders must come on board in sustaining the peace in the region.

“The economic development of Nigeria cannot take place without peace. Rather than shift the blame completely to the government we should look at the role we can play to restore peace for the region.”

A member of the board and Director, Center For Gender, Conflict and Development Studies, University of Port Harcourt, Prof Heoma Nsirim-Worlu said government has a role to play to restore the region.

She said: “The Niger Delta should be considered as an endangered region. The people of the region are impoverished and challenged.

“Government has a role to play in restoring the region. There should also be attitudinal change from the people of the region.”

  • WaterAid seeks more investments in women

WaterAid seeks more investments in women

A non-governmental organisation, WaterAid Nigeria has called for more investments in water, sanitation and hygiene facilities to promote women’s rights and dignity.

The organisation said low investment in WASH affected women’s rights to education, health, dignity of human persons and livelihoods.

County Director, WaterAid Nigeria, Evelyn Mere in a statement to mark this year’s International Women’s Day, said: “The lowest hanging fruit for investing in women to achieve progress is to invest in safe and inclusive WASH. Increasing access to clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene helps protect the rights of women, promote their dignity, and enhance national development. WaterAid has collaborated with some government agencies to design female friendly toilets that supports this process.

“We call on governments at all level to adopt them, and invest in construction, and replication in public places as part of this women friendly investment that today seeks to promote.”

According to her, investment in WASH s one of the most effective ways of investing in women.

“Poor access to WASH impacts more negatively on women and the girl child. They bear the most cost and burden of time sent in search of water for domestic uses, they are more vulnerable to infection from poor access to hygiene and non-availability of decent toilets,” she said.

Mere added: “Women are also the most susceptible to violence arising from looking for water or practicing open defecation. Even where toilets are built in public places, they are not inclusive and safe and do not accommodate the needs of women as envisaged by SDG 6.2. They are not able to access facilities for managing their menstrual hygiene with dignity and are therefore excluded from economic and livelihood activities during their period. This is made worse by the high cost of menstrual hygiene materials resulting in period poverty.

“As we commemorate this year’s International Women’s Day, WaterAid calls on the Government of Nigeria at all levels to invest in increasing access to WASH in a manner that addresses the needs of women. This includes provision of potable water so that women can access water easily, investment in safe, inclusive, and sustainable sanitation facilities to guarantee women’s health and promote the availability of accessible and affordable hygiene materials to preserve women’s dignity.”

  • We’ll make one woman in every household a farmer, says Benue deputy gov’s wife

We’ll make one woman in every household a farmer, says Benue deputy gov’s wife

The wife of Benue state deputy governor, Mrs Christy Sam Ode, has flaunted a foundation to make at least one woman in every household in the state, an active farmer.

Ode made this known in an interview on Tuesday, March 12, that the ‘Evergreen Women Farmers Foundation, has been registered and will commence full activities soon.

The deputy governor’s wife said she decided to focus on agriculture because it holds the biggest capacity to create chains of opportunities for women and the youth.

She said: “I want women to go into farming. God has blessed our land. I am telling the women that in whatever way they can, they should help each other and encourage each other.

“We want to support women with seedlings, fertilizer and whatever we can, but the truth is that women need to come out and go into farming so that there will be enough food for the home and also for making a profit.”

She explained that the initiative was her way of supporting the efforts of the governor, Rev. Fr Hyacinth Alia in placing women at the forefront of the state’s development.

She added: “In Benue state, the Governor is really trying by giving good positions to women. As you know without women, there will be no men.

“As women, we are seeking for the men to take us more into everything they are doing so that we also will be strong.”

Ode said women had shown that they were a force to reckon with in politics as they provided the biggest political base in the country.

She stated: “When it is Election Day, the women are everywhere and when they tell you yes, their yes is yes, so we asking those in leadership positions to carry the women along.”

She said that though as Christians and Muslims, the religions place women under men, it’s important to encourage women to contribute to every facet of societal growth and development.

“We don’t have to go across what we are not supposed to do; we are trying our best to work together as a team, to be humble so that the men will understand us better and the religion will accept us the way we are.”

She advised women in political and administrative positions, “to support each other and be your sisters’ keepers so that we can grow stronger than the way we are now.”

  • Minister drums support for Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative

Minister drums support for Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister of State, Mariya Mahmoud, has called on women leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to come up with ideas that would support the Renewed Hope Initiative of the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu to succeed.

The minister, who made this call when women leaders of the APC paid her a sympathy visit in her office, also tasked them to work together for the interest of all Nigerians.

Mahmoud harps on the need to bring women closer, not only when elections are around the corner, but to build an inclusive society.

She, however, commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his style of leadership, stressing that the government is on the right track towards building an inclusive society.

According to her: “for us to achieve the issue of inclusion, we have to work together. And that is even the logo of our great party, the broom tied together.

“We have to synergize for us to achieve. We have to be working together with synergy. We need to know what is happening in Taraba, we need to know what is happening in Katsina, we need to know what is happening in Imo.

“And more importantly we need to know how we can assist our mother, the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. What are her methods of getting closer to our women so that we apply the same in Kano, we apply same in Katsina and other states of the federation for us to achieve?

“We have to bring these women closer. Not when elections are around the corner. So we need to be close because we need to advise the First Ladies of our states. We have to really work harder. We have to brainstorm and come up with practical ideas”.

While speaking on the recent infrastructural developments in the FCT, Mahmoud assured her guests that before the end of the tenure, residents of the territory would witness several changes in terms of infrastructure, agriculture, people’s welfare, education and health sector.

She said:  “And I want to assure you that this is just the beginning. Before the end of the tenure, you will see several changes in terms of infrastructures, in terms of agriculture, in terms of our people’s welfare, and then also the education and health sector at large”.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the Special Assistant, Media, Austin Elemue, the leader of the delegation and National Deputy Women Leader of the APC, Hajia Zainab Ibrahim, commended the FCT Minister of State for her teamwork, noting that the recent changes in the nation’s capital were as a result of committed teamwork.

She said: “The projects we are seeing in recent times in our capital city are worth commendation. We are very happy that both of you are working together for the upliftment of FCT.

  • EU seeks increase of women’s participation in governance

EU seeks increase of women’s participation in governance

The European Union (EU) has urged political parties to adopt robust measures and strategies to increase women’s participation and representation in governance.

The organisation noted that the active participation of women at all levels of decision-making and politics was essential to the achievement of equality, sustainable development, peace, and democracy.

The EU further stressed that there was an urgent need for political parties to review and reform all founding and policy documents, namely political parties’ constitutions, manifestos, party rules, and procedures and strategy documents to incorporate national and international norms and obligations on gender equality.

European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Samuela Isopi made this known during the Women in Parliament Summit in Abuja, in commemoration of the International Women’s week, organised by the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN), with the theme: “inspiring inclusion: policy mechanisms for gender parity in politics.”

She said: “The ongoing constitution reform process presents an opportunity to adopt an inclusive legal framework that promotes equal participation of all Nigerians regardless of gender, ethnicity, age and disability status.

“In Nigeria, the advocacy for women’s political participation has been long drawn, and in spite of the very dynamic interventions by women’s groups and other key stakeholders, their representation remains in steady decline. For example, women’s representation in the 10th National Assembly is 7.4 percent out of 469 combined seats in the Senate and House of Representatives.

“There has been no woman elected Governor in Nigeria’s 25 years of democracy and the percentage of women appointed to political positions still falls significantly short compared to men. I am not quoting these figures to make it seem impossible, but to show that it is indeed possible.

“It is recognized that political parties are the ‘real gatekeepers’ on women’s political empowerment. If the political parties institutionalise gender equality measures and transform from within, it will have a direct impact on women’s equal participation and representation in Nigeria.”

Ambassador Isopi urged political parties to set women’s representation in their decision-making bodies such as the National Executive Councils and directorates for elections at not less than 30 percent, which is regarded as the critical figure for women to have any influence.

She said: “The political culture in Nigeria is underpinned by patriarchy and the ‘unwritten’ rules on male privilege within political parties. Oftentimes, only women whose husband support them or have a legacy of family political activism make it to the top.

“On our own part, Gender equality and Women’s Rights are a top priority of the European Union. This is true internally and regarding the EU’s approach to international cooperation. To achieve this, the EU launched its third Gender Action Plan on 25 November 2020.

“The Gender Action Plan aims to help establish a gender-equal world, where women and girls enjoy their human rights in full, and fairer societies, in which everyone has the space to thrive with no one left behind.

“The EU has provided support to women’s political participation since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999. Technical support has been provided within the framework of our electoral cycle support programmes, which is now in the value of over 180 million Euros.

“We have developed a variety of approaches to support women’s political participation. Efforts focus on women in politics, women as candidates, and women as voters, as well as in electoral observation.”

Chair, House Committee on TETFUND, Miriam Onuoha said: “We could move away from conventional advocacies and campaign points to non-conventional advocacies such as appeals to our traditional institutions, faith-based organisations, wherein these advocacies will stem from our cultural heads. They should pick a female candidate and sponsor such a person.

“Even if we have a little bit of the numbers, if we are not on the core decision-making table, decisions that border on which of these bills comes as priorities becomes overlooked or may be watered-down because we are not there when these critical decisions are taken.”

The House of Representative member representing Nembe-Brass Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, Marie Ebikake said: “I have been in this game of politics for 44 years. I am a grassroots woman. I believe that, first, women must have the passion for this game we call politics. When people say women are not included, I say – no, you must come out to show your interest from the grassroots.

“Women, beyond conferences and addresses, must face the practicality of this game. Don’t be afraid of any man. When we face the practicality of this game called politics, I tell you, you will enjoy it and be able to make a meaningful impact in the lives of people. Be upright; integrity is very important.”

Also, the Director of Programmes, Yiaga Africa, Cynthia Mbamalu said: “In 1960, Nigeria had its first female Senator, Wuraola Esan. However, 64 years later, we just have 3 Senators that are women, out of the 109 Senators in the National Assembly. That is not progress!

“This is a call for governmental action to ensure the amendment of the constitution to increase women representation. We need intentional efforts that can be taken to ensure legislative reforms, specifically, constitutional amendments that can increase women representation.”

The Head of Communications and Special Projects, ElectHER, Eyitemi Adebowale said: “The statistics paint a stark picture: while women constitute approximately 49.4 percent of Nigeria’s population, their representation in the parliament falls far below this mark.

“In parliamentary representation globally, Nigeria ranks at 181 of 193 countries, 54 out of 54 in African parliament, and currently have 4.43 percent women representation nationally. This is below the global average of 22.5 percent, the Africa Regional Average of 23.4 percent, and the West African Sub Regional Average of 15 percent.

“The underrepresentation of women in political leadership often means that issues regarding women’s rights are often overlooked in setting the agenda for policy making. Hence, there is a need to accelerate efforts towards ensuring adequate representation of women in political leadership.”

Also, Programme Lead, Nigerian Women Trust Fund (NWTF), Vaneza Udegbe Gregory added: “Together, we can overcome the barriers that hinder women’s political participation and create a more inclusive political environment in Nigeria.

“Together, we can build a future where every woman has the opportunity to contribute her talents and perspectives to the political landscape of our nation.”
