Over one million infants vaccinated in Gombe, Jigawa

Over one million infants have been vaccinated in nine northern states since the conditional cash transfer for routine immunisation program began in 2021, it has been learnt.

The program, which was supported by the New Incentives – All Babies Are Equal (NI-ABAE), encouraged over 9.5 million vaccinations in Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Taraba, Adamawa and Zamfara states.

According to a statement by the State Ministries of Health and State Primary Health Care Development Agencies (SPHCDA) of Gombe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Adamawa and Taraba states, after their fifth bi-annual joint stakeholder meeting, said the partnership helped to improve demand generation for routine immunisation and other supply-side supports for the routine immunization system.

It reads: “The All Babies program encourages each round of vaccines included in Nigeria’s Routine Immunisation schedule. Small cash incentives are disbursed to beneficiaries during each of the six routine immunisation visits, conditional on infants receiving BCG (newborn), PENTA, and PCV (6, 10, and 14 weeks); and MCV vaccines (9 and 15 months).

“Though these vaccines are the ones minimally required to receive the incentive, all vaccinations in the routine immunisation schedule are encouraged. The caregiver receives N500 for all visits except for the nine and 15th month visits, where the incentive is N2,000 upon receiving MCV 1, and N1,000 upon receiving MCV 2.

“These vaccinations are provided at no cost to the caregiver through government-supported clinics. The cash incentives help compensate for transportation costs, lost income, and waiting time, while creating behavioral change through awareness creation on the benefits of immunisations.

“Since the beginning in January 2021, the All Babies program has enrolled over 1 million infants, encouraged over 9.5 million vaccinations, and disbursed N2.3 billion to caregivers, thanks to the collaboration of staff at over 4,000 government clinics in 124 local government areas.

“In 109 of these councils, the All Babies program operates in nearly all government clinics. An independent randomised control trial of the All Babies program (2017-2020), found that the program increases the likelihood that children would be fully immunised by 27 per cent and increases rates of individual vaccinations by 14 to 21 per cent.

“In 2023, NI-ABAE plans to work with state partners to expand the program to 11 states throughout northern Nigeria, and enroll 1.5 million infants throughout the year.”

  • I had no secret deal with Christians, PDP, says Sule

I had no secret deal with Christians, PDP, says Sule

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has debunked  entering into a secret deal with Christians and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to win his re-election.

According to him, the people of Nasarawa rose above religious sentiments to vote him for a second term.

Sule made the clarification in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Adra.

The statement reads: “It is pertinent to state that Governor Sule did not, at any time before or during the 2023 polls, enter into any agreement or ‘secret deal’ with individuals or groups.

“It is therefore necessary to put the issues in their right perspective as was intended when the governor interacted with some senior editors of newspapers in Abuja. It is worth reiterating that Governor Sule did not enter any deal with Christians, traditional rulers and PDP ahead of the March 18 governorship election, as was portrayed by a newspaper.

“The fact is that certain prominent Christians, as well as supporters of the PDP, voted for Governor Sule essentially because of their belief and trust in his leadership qualities, despite the religious sentiments brought to bear.

“The intended message inherent in the governor’s remarks is that the people rose above religious sentiments to vote for him. Achieving this feat required no deal, secret or open, as the people have seen, touched and felt the impact of the Governor Sule administration in the last four years. The deal, if any, is that Governor Sule has delivered on his mandate and the people evidently rewarded him with another term of four years as governor.”

  • We have no link with Ortom – Ethanol company

We have no link with Ortom – Ethanol company

An ethanol production company based in Benue State has debunked rumours that it is owned by Governor Samuel Ortom.

Rumours had been making the rounds that Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom had interest in the gigantic ethanol company located on Makurdi-Gboko road at a village called Angbaaye.

However, two weeks ago, officials of the National University of Environmental Standard and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) put the company under lock and key for allegedly discharging effluent into River Benue.

But the management of the company, through its Corporate Communication and Public Relations personnel, Steven Numbeve, stated that the company is owned by a Chinese national government by name Liu Yangxi.

Numbeve said: “Governor Samuel Ortom does not own any share in the company as many erroneously believed.”

Throwing more light on why the company was sealed by NEAREA, the Public Relations Officer (PRO), Pure Biotech Company Limited, said: “In April there was an accidental discharge of untreated effluent with sludge from the facility into the River Benue, in Bezu village (its host community).

He said, “The sludge from a by-product (bio-gas) was allowed to move into a ‘Saver pit’ which got filled up when engineers had shut down operations for the day,  and the sludge then filled down the drains into the river without pre-treatment.”

According to Numbeve, the said discharge was not a continuous one as being widely reported, as it occurred just that moment when the facility’s Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) was under a test-run.

“ After complying with stipulated conditions for unsealing in line with NESREA enforcement procedure, including conducting independent physicochemical analysis, ascertaining the functionality of ETP and payment of fines; our company was unsealed and we have since resumed operations.”

He stated that the company is not discharging any effluent into the environment, river or any water body whatsoever, as it has installed a state-of-the-art Effluent Treatment Plant, ETP, and all liquid and solid wastes are pre-treated, recycled, and reused.

The management of the company said it lost millions of naira during the two-week closure of the plant and reinstated its commitment to safety of the environment, especially the host community.

  • Radio CEO to governors: nominate women for ministerial appointments

Radio CEO to governors: nominate women for ministerial appointments

Chief Executive Officer of Women Radio 91.7, Mrs. Toun Okewale Sonaiya has urged All Progressives Congress (APC) Governors in their states to nominate at least one woman among the three names they send to the incoming administration for ministerial appointments.

This ,she said, would translate to ‘approximately 35 per cent in accordance with the affirmative action and bridge the vacuum created in 2023 elective positions’.

According to her, there are competent and capable women politicians and female technocrats across the nation, thus, every man and woman should play a part in rebuilding the socio-economic fabric of the country.

Mrs Sonaiya stated that though the men are great nation builders, they require the support and input of women, adding that when men and women lead together, Nigeria will make progress.

In a statement, she said women are advocating an increase in female representation in governance at all levels.

She said: “Nigerian women’s groups are maintaining a strong alliance in advocating for an increase in female representation in governance at all levels. Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre is coordinating women representatives of each state to present the Nigerian Women Charter of Demand to the government of each state.

” Additionally, League of Women Voters of Nigeria, 100 Women Lobby Groups and Women in Politics Forum members in each of the 36 states will visit governors to lobby for state nomination of women for ministerial and commissioner appointments.

Nigerian Women Trust Fund is holding a strategic briefing with 9th Assembly female legislators on the 35% affirmative action judgment to demand more appointments of women with the incoming administration.

“Despite increased lobbying and advocacy for gender balance and female inclusion in politics in the last three years, the just-concluded 2023 elections saw the lowest and most demoralising percentage of elected women senators and House of Representatives, with only three and fourteen, respectively.

“The 9th National Assembly rejected the passage of the five gender bills, failing Nigerian women. Nigerian women are hopeful that the 10th National Assembly will pass the bills for Nigeria’s development.

“Political parties must revisit their manifestos and match their words with actions in terms of female recognition within the party, as marginalization against women in elective positions arises internally.”

She expressed hope that governors will raise the stakes of the polity and that the incoming administration will both uphold the demands of women as promised and write its name in the books of Nigerian history in good standing.

10th Assembly: Group urges Onuh to run for speaker

A group under the auspices of the Coalition of North Central Christians (CNCC) has called on Rt. Hon Blessing Onuh to run for the position of Speaker in the 10th National Assembly.

North Central Christians President, Rev. Bitrus Alih said the lawmaker representing Otukpo/Ohimini Federal Constituency is the best candidate from the region to succeed Femi Gbajabiamila.

According to Alih, Onuh’s emergence will be groundbreaking for three reasons.

First, he said as a woman, it would end the noise about gender inequality in politics and enhance the reputation of the incoming administration in terms of women’s inclusion in governance.

Alih added that being a Christian, she will douse the tension among believers and end the fallacious Islamic agenda of the Tinubu administration.

He said as a native of Benue State, Onuh’s Speakership will answer the question of the marginalization of the North Central.

But more importantly, Alih said Onuh is competent, experienced, and rugged for the job.

The Christian group said Onuh had shown the capacity and a knack for excellence in the legislature and during her time in the Federal Capital Development Authority.

Alih said very few returning parliamentarians match her rich resume and track record.

While urging Onuh to join the race for the Speaker, the Coalition of North Central Christians called on her colleagues to accord her all the necessary support to emerge.
