Zulum orders recruitment of medical doctors, nurses

The Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum has directed the recruitment of medical doctors, nurses and other health professionals who are indigenes of Shani to address the manpower gap in the local government’s health facilities.

Zulum gave the directive at the palace of the Emir of Shani, Alh. Muhammadu Nasiru Mailafiya during homage on Sunday.

“The Local Government Chairman should compile and submit the names of Shani indigenes who have studied medicine, nursing and other health-related professions to be employed to meet up the existing manpower gap.

“If you can’t get enough, I think as a long-term solution, we can sponsor the younger ones to study medicine and other health courses, so that they can come back home and fill the gap,” Zulum said.

Sunday’s approval was one of the many by the Zulum administration aimed at providing affordable and quality healthcare services to rural communities across the state.

A series of other approvals by Zulum include the recruitment of 594 health workers, among them, 86 medical doctors, 365 nurses and midwives, 45 pharmacists and 100 health technicians and other support staff in September 2020.

Additional 40 doctors were also approved in January 2021 to meet the healthcare needs of Borno’s increasing population.

The latest of the approvals was the employment of 30 doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers in September 2022 for Bama General Hospital devastated by the Boko Haram insurgents.

  • Jagaban Army: ‘PDP’s claim of parallel army false, hallucinatory ‘

Jagaban Army: ‘PDP’s claim of parallel army false, hallucinatory ‘

All Progressives Congress (APC) National Youth Leader Dayo Israel, has described as ‘deranged’ and ‘hallucinatory’ claims by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that its unit of vote canvassers dubbed the ‘Jagaban Army’ was a parallel army instituted to foment violence and rival the country’s recognised armed forces.

Israel said this in a statement yesterday announcing the rebranding of the unit as ‘Jagaban Movement’. This, the statement said, was out of respect to “national sensibilities” and to lay to rest the “sensational and misleading claims of the opposition party, including its latest irresponsible call to the president to convene the National Security Council over a non-issue.”

Israel said: “It has become apparent that the broken and soon-to-be-defeated PDP has resorted to making deranged, hallucinatory, and misleading claims about the subject of the Jagaban Army in a bid to deflect attention from the unending woes of its candidate who remains haunted by his sordid past of SPVs and other unsavoury actions.”

“In the interest of the public and other well-meaning Nigerians, we wish to re-emphasise that the Jagaban Army, which will now be known as the Jagaban Movement to deny the opposition the attention they desperately seek through deliberate distortions and irresponsible sensationalism, is no more than a unit of ordinary young civilians selected from across all the wards in the country to canvass votes for our party and candidate through peaceful and democratic engagement methods.”

“The names of all the members, including elected youth leaders of our party and other prominent young Nigerians, are available to the public, a fact that exposes the claim of the opposition as nonsensical as no militia or cult with nefarious motives would make public verifiable details of its members, including their location and coverage areas.”

“Members of the public are also urged to note the activities of the movement on January 21, when they took to the streets in all the states of the country to mark the first edition of our party’s ‘Deliver Your Street’ campaign.”

“Contrary to the hallucination of the opposition, they wore no uniform nor bore arms as neither of that forms part of the unit’s purpose or operations. Instead, they were aided by peaceful and democratic tools such as branded promotional materials and a canvasser’s record booklet with which they documented their progress and collected data for later processing. They peacefully engaged neighbours and residents to promote pro-democracy actions including electoral participation.”

“The evidence of this is publicly available, including excited reactions of engaged voters who were happy to benefit from gestures offered by our canvassers, including respectful political dialogues had over free meals and which was focused on highlighting the gains of our party since its emergence as the ruling party and why Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains the best choice for Nigeria at this time in our quest for national greatness.”

“It was perhaps the success of this event, and the media evidence of real voters in grassroots communities across the country pledging to elect our candidate, that triggered the well-known neurosis of the PDP since its historic defeat in 2015 and caused it to regurgitate already debunked fictitious and hallucinatory claims that our party was responsible for forming a “parallel army.”

“Their overamplification of the fact that the National Youth Leader and his Deputy wore ceremonial attires, an action meant to merely add to the ceremonial significance of the event, is nothing more than a desperate grasp at straws by a party scared witless by its failure to generate any interest in its imploding campaign.”

“The National Youth Leader and his Deputy were the only officials of the party to adorn the ceremonial attire fashioned after civil brigades, bands, and evangelical units of religious institutions simply for ceremonial reasons.”

“No other member of the movement did the same, as no uniform was designed nor adopted for its peaceful and democratic functions. In other words, the renamed Jagaban Army, being a civil vote mobilisation unit, never fashioned its own uniform as falsely alleged by the opposition.”

“Let it be known that the Jagaban Army, now known as the Jagaban Movement, is an initiative of the Youth Wing of the party comprising over 200,000 youth leaders elected from the national to the polling units. It has gained widespread acceptance by young Nigerians in the country who are volunteering their time and resources to promote its activities and independently produce and distribute items for the same purpose, including caps, food materials, and others.”

“Its activities are fully democratic, peaceful, and lawful. It poses no threat to the peaceful conduct of the election nor the country’s recognised armed forces. On the contrary, it seeks to expand and fortify the country’s democracy, and maintain our forward motion, by increasing youth participation in the coming polls and ensuring Asiwaju’s emergence through the ballot.”

“Instead of fretting over the popularity of the movement and its acceptance by ordinary young Nigerians who are eager to prove themselves as foot soldiers of our candidate based on his credible track record as an enabler of youth empowerment and growth, the PDP is advised to mourn its anticipated defeat quietly given the obvious fact that Nigerians have elected to reject the defective product it continues to hawk around every election cycle.”

“They should refrain from insulting important national bodies such as the National Security Council with frivolous calls for its assembly over mendacious claims of “training camps” and “parallel army” which it failed to provide proof of.”

  • Shettima, strong back up for Tinubu, says Gombe Chief of Staff

Shettima, strong back up for Tinubu, says Gombe Chief of Staff

GOMBE State Chief of Staff and Director, Contact Mobilisation for Tinubu Shettima Presidential Campaign, Alhaji Abubakar Inuwa Kari, yesterday, described the choice of Senator Kassim Shettima as a strong back up for the presidential ambition of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Kari’s comment is coming on the heels of criticisms trailing the selection of the former Borno State governor as the running mate for the ruling All Progressive Congress’ (APC) presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Speaking exclusively with The Nation newspaper in his office in Gombe, Kari said: “I see Shettima bringing in a lot of energy and support in this election.”

He explained that when Kashim Shettima was governor of Borno, he brought the highest votes for the APC presidential candidate, President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015, adding that the former governor is a household name in the Northeast and will be a very strong back up for Asiwaju.

“He is going to give him the votes. Let me also say this, especially since you mentioned that Atiku comes from the zone like Shettima; Atiku has nothing to show in the Northeast, the only thing he is campaigning with here is that he is from the zone and that he wants to be like late Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa. Atiku cannot be like Tafawa Balewa and he should just stop comparing himself with him. He is from this zone and for the eight years he was Vice President, he has virtually nothing to show in terms of developmental projects that he has done here,” he said.

“If I may ask you one question, show me one thing that Atiku has done in Adamawa, his home state in those eight years as Vice President, nothing, it is zero. The road between Gombe and Adamawa was done by President Muhammadu Buhari. So honestly, Atiku should hide his head in shame for coming to the Northeast to ask us to vote for him.”

Kari, however, expressed strong optimism that Asiwaju will do more for the zone, even more than the present President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.

    Abducted Ikulu-Pari catechist released

MR Kefas Ishaya, the Catechist of St. Monica’s Catholic Church, Ikuly-Pari in Kauru Local Government of Kaduna State, who was abducted Thursday night, has been released.

A statement from the Kafanchan Diocese of the Catholic Church, said that Ishaya, who was kidnapped from the parish rectory, was released Saturday morning.

“On behalf of the Bishop and the Catechetical Commission, we give thanks to God and sincerely appreciate all for your prayers and support,” the statement signed by Fr. Emmanuel Okolo, Chancellor of the Diocese, said.

The statement did not indicate if any ransom was paid, but a source from the Church told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that an unspecified amount was paid.

“The captors initially asked for N5 million but we discussed with them,” the source, a leader in the church, told NAN.

NAN recalls that gunmen on Thursday abducted Ishaya when they could not get his boss, Rev Fr Joseph Shekari, who was not in when his residence was attacked.

Fr Shekari, who was abducted in similar circumstances in February 2022, had travelled out of the village and was not available for a second ordeal in captivity.

The parish had held its annual Thanksgiving Service on Sunday and its members suspect the abductors were targeting the proceeds, having succeeded in carting away what was generated in February 2022.

Mr Sunday Bage, Chairman of Ikulu Zone of the parish, told NAN that the abductors came “around 9.30 p.m.”

“Thank God Father (Reverend) travelled. They didn’t get him, but they picked our Catechist. They dragged the Catechist to the bush. They took him with his phone,” he had told NAN.

He said that the gunmen were many and kept shooting sporadically, moving through the Church, the school and the Priest’s residence in search of the Rev Father.

  • Adamawa: Mbula people reject lawmaker as Fintiri takes campaign to Borong

Adamawa: Mbula people reject lawmaker as Fintiri takes campaign to Borong

GOVERNOR Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State on Saturday took his re-election campaign to Borrong, the heartland town of the Mbula people, where he received a pledge of block votes.

The crowd that welcomed Fintiri to Borrong, however, openly spurned the re-election effort of their own representative in the state House of Assembly, Kate Mamuno of the Demsa constituency, who was on the governor’s entourage.

Fintiri had mounted the podium with the lawmaker and other party bigwigs to assure the people of Borrong and surrounding communities that their welfare would be his priorities should they give him their votes during the March 11 governorship election.

He also pledged that the dilapidated road from Yola to Borrong would be rehabilitated if re-elected.

The governor, however, ran into open opposition when he tried to make a case for the re-election of their lawmaker, Kate Mamuno.

It immediately became clear that the lawmaker, who was elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2019 as the sole female among 25 state lawmakers, is having issues with her own people, as they shouted,  ‘We don’t want’, ‘We don’t want’.

Fintiri, however, pleaded that she should be forgiven of whatever she might have done wrong, but the crowd persisted, with some even asking that she should leave the podium.

Some of those opposing her complained that she is a highly withdrawn person who behaves as if the people she claims to represent mean nothing to her.

“If you massively vote for me and your aggregate votes surpass that of my Duguri ancestral district in the March 11 governorship election, be rest assured that I will create an emirate for you with a second or first-class status”, he told the Dambam people.

Mohammed spoke at a rally in Dambam on Saturday on the second leg of his gubernatorial campaign tour across the Bauchi Central Senatorial District.

  • Diphtheria: Deaths toll now 34, says NCDC

Diphtheria: Deaths toll now 34, says NCDC

    · •How 25 died of disease, by Kano Comm. For Health

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has revealed that the death toll from Diphtheria disease across the country is now 34.

This, it said, is between late December last year and early January this year.

Recall that the agency disclosed that four states, namely: Lagos, Kano, Yobe and Osun, had reported cases of the disease, with Kano State recording 25 deaths.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television yesterday, the Director-General of the NCDC, Dr. Ifedayo Adetifa, explained that the increase in cases and resurgence of the diphtheria disease is the result of low vaccination coverage across the country.

He said: “Diphtheria is a vaccine preventable disease that used to be common decades ago. Due to the effectiveness of childhood vaccination programmes, most people have forgotten what diphtheria looks like.

“The fact that we are having a resurgence of diphtheria now suggests that there have been critical reductions in vaccination coverage among pockets of our population. This reduced the level of population immunity has given rise to the cases that we are seeing. It is not a matter of diphtheria spreading from state to state, the bacteria that cause the disease is present everywhere in our environment. Any state where you find diphtheria now, you are likely to find that it will be associated with suboptimal vaccination coverage, either in general or in pockets of the population.

In a related development, the Kano State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa, at a press Conference on Saturday, said there were 100 suspected cases of diphtheria from 13 councils, which have combined with Lassa fever outbreak in the state to add more threats to the health of the people.

Tsanyawa revealed that the first case of diphtheria in Kano State was confirmed on November 30 last year by AKTH Laboratory.

Tsanyawa said: “As at January 20, 2023, we have recorded 100 suspected cases from 13 local government areas of Nassarawa, Bichi, Dala, Dawakin Kudu, Fagge, Gwale, Kano Municipal, Kumbotso, Rano, Dawakin Tofa and Gwarzo.

“Of the 100 suspected cases, eight were confirmed while awaiting more results.

“We have lost three among the eight confirmed cases and 22 among other suspected cases.

“Currently, 27 patients are on admission receiving treatment while 41 have been managed and discharged successfully.”

He explained that diphtheria is an acute toxic infection caused by Coryno bacterium species, transmitted from person to person through respiratory droplets and contact with contaminated clothing and objects.

Symptoms include mild to severe fever, cough, sneezing, sore throat, neck swelling and difficulty in breathing. Complications may include damage to the heart, kidney damage and bleeding with death in up to 21 percent of cases. He also noted that it is a preventable disease and its antigen is among the pentatonic vaccines (PETA) taken three times (PENTA 1-3) before the age of 1 year.

    Onjeh consoles BSU, mourns Adejoh

The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Benue South, Comrade Daniel Onjeh, has commiserated with the Governing Council and Management of the Benue State University (BSU) over the demise of Idoma-born erudite Professor of History and BSU Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, Prof. Armstrong Matthew Adejoh.

In a statement by Prince Maxwell Ogiri, the Director of Media for the Onjeh Campaign Organization, Onjeh expressed grief over the demise od Adejoh, whom he described as a seasoned academic, justice/equity advocate and foremost national commentator on socio-economic and political issues.

Onjeh applauded Adejoh’s monumental contributions to the educational, moral, and infrastructural development of Benue State, adding through his many lectures, publications and commentaries, Prof. Adejoh had firmly advocated for the bridging of the many socio-infrastructural gaps in the State.

He noted that he confers immense respect on the late Prof. Adejoh for being a very vocal advocate for the rights of minority groups and interests.

Onjeh stated Adejoh championed the cause for the instatement of an Idoma Governor in Benue State until his parting moments.

Onjeh also extolled Prof. Adejoh for believing in, and promoting the actualisation of a democratically-elected President from the Middle Belt Region as well as a female President for Nigeria, through the “HeforShe” Campaign introduced by the UN Women, of which Prof. Adejoh was a frontline member in Benue State.

Noting that the Idoma Nation and Benue State at large had lost one of its finest intellectuals and gentlemen, Onjeh hailed the late Professor of Diplomatic History and International Relations for his significant contributions to the development of the Benue State University, Makurdi, commending his steady rise through the ranks from the position of a lecturer, to becoming the Dean of Postgraduate School; the Dean of Students’ Affairs and until his demise, the Deputy Vice Chancellor administration.
