NAS takes campaign against gender based violence to Kaduna community

The National Association of Seadogs, NAS, in the Northwest zone of the country at the weekend, took its campaign for the elimination of gender based violence against women and girls, to Makera Community in Kaduna South Local Government Area.

This was as the country joined the global community to commemorate the International Day for the elimination of gender based violence against women and girls.

Speaking on the campaign, President of the Kaduna Chapter of NAS also known as Pyrates Confraternity, Ambassador Dr. Obinna Okpara said the association joined the UN to celebrate the international day.

He said they were able to collaborate with the Kaduna State Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Human Services and Social Development,FIDA and other noble associations so as to create awareness and provide solution to the ills of the community.

He said they were against any form of violence against women, including rape of the girl child and the issue of dropping the girl child from school because of her gender.

He said they were also against not giving women their right in the family.

“Now there is a rapid increase in this, and most times there is fear in the females to speak out when they are violated or their rights infringed upon. So we are here to sensitize the women and girl child who have experienced violence or sexual abuse on how to be better,” he said.

Amb. Okpara said such experience could be traumatic, leading to mental issues to a point that some victims would contemplate committing suicide.

He said it was why they were with health officials and other experts to let them know they could overcome the trauma and live a better life, or where they could go for rehabilitation.

According to him, “We can facilitate where they can be rehabilitated and bring them back to the society to live normal life. So the essence of the programme is to let them know that a woman that was abused can actually live a better life. For those not abused, they should know the places to avoid, the measures to take so as not get abused.”

He said what they were doing was new to the community.

He noted that the two state ministries headed by female commissioners were happy with the development.

The association, he said, would work with the government to ensure justice is being implemented so that the vices would not continue.

Dr.Salima Mohammed from the Kaduna State Ministry of Health said although gender based vilionce affects women more because they are more vulnerable than the men, women too do violence against the men.

She said, “There are different kinds of violence,it could be domestic,it could be physical,it could be sexual,it could be psychological,it could even be economic. Like someone working for you,you feel he doesn’t have the right and you give him smaller wage.”

She explained that the state government now has a sexual offender data base where those caught by law would be exposed to the world.

“You can go to the website and have the history of anyone who have been a criminal on that, the one convicted. If you go on line his name would be there, all over the world.,” she said.

She also revealed that there are four sexual assault referral centres in the state and a mobile one where one could report because Kaduna state government takes the issue seriously, adding that they are working in synergy with security agencies so that people can be protected.

Also speaking, Mrs.Martina Egwuibe, Head of branch of the National Library in Kaduna said they were creating and sensitizing awareness to Kaduna populace on the issue because they discovered that instead of the violence against women and girl child to come down as a result of the campaign over years, it’s rather increasing.

“So we decided its enough of speaking in TV or radio to speak English, enough of sitting in the urban area having programmes. This year we decided to come down to the community.”

She said it’s a global problem which requires the NGOs, government, corporate organisations and individuals to unite against , which led to this year’s theme ‘Unite ! Activism to end violence against women and child’.

An expert, Amb. Lois Otse Adams said through such campaign, they hope to reduce the high level of domestic violence against women and girl child in schools, public places, in homes and in the society so that women can live peacefully with their male counterparts.

The District Head of Makera Community, Alhaji Shehu Tijjani Ciroman Zazzau thanked them for coming to his community and hoped similar organisations would emulate the gesture.

Highlight of the occasion was a roadwalk on some Kaduna streets by members of NAS to sensitize the public on the campaign, and an interactive session with women and girls on the importance of the elimination of gender based violence.

Experts seek integration of mental health into maternal health services

Experts at a one-day national dialogue on the development of a maternal mental health MMH policy for Nigeria have sought the integration of MMH services into existing health services and mainstreamed into Primary Health Care using the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) for effective implementation.

The experts in a communiqué at the end of the one-day national dialogue held in Abuja said Maternal Mental Health Policy should leverage the Task Shifting/Task Sharing Policy for capacity development and networking of stakeholders.

They explained further that the National Health Management Information System (NHMIS) should include indicators on Maternal Mental Health and an M&E framework should be developed to drive decision-making and effective implementation.

“Adequate funding provision for research on Maternal Mental Health must be a priority for goal setting. There should be multi-sectoral collaboration during development of the policy to include key stakeholders, key and vulnerable populations while the policy should be extended along the continuum of care, including male engagement as it relates to mental healthcare.”

Furthermore, the experts suggested that the policy should be internally aligned to global best practices, and consideration should be given to the inclusion of other reproductive health matters in the Maternal Mental Health Policy.

Earlier, the Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, in his opening address charged the congregation of experts to critically examine the current MMH situation and arrive at a policy that will form the foundation of addressing the critical situation of MMH in the country.

“Perinatal Common Mental Disorders (PCMDs) are a leading cause of years lived with disability in women of childbearing age and are associated with substantial human and economic costs. Maternal mental health problems are detrimental to a woman’s health; having been linked to reduced sensitivity and responsiveness in care-giving and higher rates of behavioural problems in young children,” he said.

According to him, the main objectives of the meeting were to set the agenda for discussions with stakeholders on the emerging issues on maternal mental health; forge collaborative connections among stakeholders to birth the process for MMH strategy; and develop a detailed plan of action for moving the MMH strategy forward.

The Federal Ministry of Health in collaboration with Align MNH and MCGL QoC organised the one-day national dialogue on the development of a maternal mental health policy for Nigeria.

Sixty (60) participants cutting across government Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs), medical experts, implementing partners, civil society organisations, media and relevant state government representatives formed the attendance at this parley.

In Nigeria, the prevalence of perinatal depression ranges from 8-28%.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines maternal mental health (MMH) as “a state of well-being in which a mother realises her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her community.”

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in collaboration with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has trained reporters on how to avoid conflict-sensitive reporting at the forthcoming elections.

At the one-day capacity-building training held in Bauchi State for Northeast based reporters, the National President of NUJ, Chris Isiguzo, represented by the National Secretary, Mr. Shuaibu Leman, urged journalists to be more committed to keeping to the ethical standard of news reportage during elections.

Presenting a paper on the role of the media in the conduct of peaceful elections, Isiguzo advised that the media should report election activities in line with the electoral guidelines and laws while upholding its ethical standards.

According to him, journalists should exercise restraint while casting headlines and be wary of ‘breaking news’ capable of jeopardising their credibility.

This was as he charged media owners to provide insurance coverage for journalists covering conflict and sensitive issues, adding that no story is worth a reporter’s life.

In the same vein, the National Commissioner in charge of Voter Education, Festus Okoye, represented by Mr. Nasir Zakari Mohammed, said “journalists should be publishing information and activities of political parties and candidates to help the electorate make informed choices, ensuring through their searchlight and reports that the processes and rules of engagement of the electoral system are duly complied with.”

According to the SGF, secretaries to the state governments should entrench performance contracts among bureaucrats and political office holders, adding that there is no doubt that the state secretaries assist their respective principals to achieve their development agenda and ensure orderly governance, transition and effective hand – over of governments.

Mustapha stressed that the federal government in its bid to strengthen performance management culture enacted Executive Order 012 to institutionalise the Central Delivery Coordination Unit which has recorded significant mileage at the federal level in the area of tracking, reviewing and analyzing projects and other activities of Ministries, Departments and Agencies.

Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong said if Nigeria is to make any progress and ensure that the meagre resources are used effectively for the good of the people, “we must strengthen our systems and allow them to work.

“This is why, unfortunately; our governance structure appears to revolve around few individuals who are perceived to be either above the law or untouchables. Such perception whether real or imagined gives oxygen to impunity, corruption, nepotism, abuse of power, wastages, recklessness, abuse of privilege and lack of adherence to due process among others”, he said.
