Planned subsidy removal: Tech firm pushes for digitalisation of public transportation system

An indigenous high tech-powered mobility company, NAIRAXI has called for the digitisation of public transportation ahead of the planned removal of fuel subsidy next year.

The indigenous tech-powered mobility company said this would help reduce the effects of subsidy removal next year.

The Chief Executive Officer, NAIRAXI, Kingsley Eze, in a statement on Saturday, noted that now was the best time for the Federal Government to explore programs and initiatives that would advance the country’s transport sector.

Eze said the collapse and inefficiency of urban transit had led to what is known as “the one-man per car syndrome.”

“This obviously leads to traffic congestion, gridlock and poor air quality as a result of pollution,” he stated.

The statement added: “The program objectives of the NAIRAXI Transit Subsidy Program for private and mass mobility is to encourage Nigerians to use public transportation for commuting to and from work, and other productive engagements.

“Federal employees and economically challenged Nigerians may receive transit passes in amounts approximately equal to their commuting costs but not to exceed the maximum level allowed by law.

“It is accessed via a seamless transportation payment platform spanning public and private systems.

“The vision is to consequently improve accessibility to mobility, explore alternative energies, expand proprietary mobile technology and ensure a contactless transit card and auto fare collection technology.”

2023: Nigerians advised to resist attempts to stop use of BVAS

The Centre for Transparency Advocacy (CTA) has accused the political class of not showing commitment to the new Electoral Act, regretting that they have continued their old ways.

The civil society urged Nigerians to support the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to resist any attempt to halt the use of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) in the 2023 general elections.

The Executive Director of CTA, Faith Nwadishi, who said the event was necessitated by recent development in the polity where an opposition coalition raised the alarm of some alleged plot to halt the use of BVAS and effect leadership change in INEC, insisted that Nigerians must rise up to resist such acts.

She said: “Recent disclosures and developments have activated in us the responsibility to speak in defence of our country and her democracy. The 2023 general election, which is 133 days away, is upon Nigeria and Nigerians.

She said her group appreciated the steady progress made by the country in its electoral process.

The centre, according to Nwadishi, praised INEC for its ongoing clean-up exercise ahead of the elections, saying the action had instilled hope in Nigerians.

“So far, about 2.7 million invalid registrants were cleaned up from the system.

“This act has shown that the Commission is on the right cause to getting credible voters registered,” she said.

CTA notes that there can’t be credible elections without a credible register of voters.

“While INEC has shown signs of progress, we note that the political class has not shown commitment to the new Electoral Act and its provisions,” she said.

He said: “When we assumed office in 2015, the public consultation mechanism in governance was not at the enviable level it is today.

The Project Director of Giwak’s PACFah@scale budget, Aminu Babangida, said the state’s 2023 Budget on health was reduced, compared to previous years and “as a result of the crises between Ukraine and Russia and issues regarding the globe.”

He, however, noted that the event was organised to call the state government’s attention to the cut in the budget, which will be rectified subsequently by the state’s Ministry of Budget.

Babangida said: “We are into advocacy on key issues such as family planning, child killer diseases and this programme is being supported by DRPC PACFah at scale budget, of which we realised there was no cash backing for some of this programmes in the budget.

Breaking down the 2023 estimated income and expenditure for the state during a town hall meeting with citizens accountability platforms in the principle of the Open Government Partnership (OGP), the Commissioner for Planning and Budget, Umma Yusuf Aboki said the 2023–2025 draft budget was prepared based on macro-economic assumptions and which include crude oil price at $70 per barrel, production benchmark at 1.69 million barrels per day, and exchange rate at ?435.17 per $1.

“As with previous years, the 2023 draft budget being discussed today has been uploaded online a few days ago, to ensure its openness and accessibility for public scrutiny, observations, comments, criticisms, and suggestions,” she said.

  • Presidential candidates urged to sign off on education reform manifestos

Presidential candidates urged to sign off on education reform manifestos

The Joint Education Stakeholders Action Coalition (JESAC) has called on presidential candidates in the 2023 general election to sign off on their education reform manifestos to provide assurance of seriousness to deliver on education programmes.

The Convener, National Coordinator of JESAC, Ike Onyechere, disclosed this in an interview with newsmen in Abuja.

Onyechere, who is also chairman, Exam Ethics Marshals International (EEMI), said the challenges in education called for a new collective bargaining strategy by stakeholders.

According to him, history and current realities teach us that post-election strike actions, shutting down of public institutions and disruption of academic activities have proved unsuccessful as a collective bargaining strategy in education.

He said: “Let us engage our potential political leaders now. After the election it will be too late.

“To qualify for the support and vote of over 30 million education stakeholders, the Education Reform Manifesto of the candidate is required to proffer specific answers to specific problems.

“For example, how does the candidate intend to end systemic corruption, examination malpractices, academic dishonesty, racketeering, extortion, scams in education; to restore its moral foundation, infrastructure, regulatory and inspectorate frameworks?

“What is the plan for restoring the universal code of ethics, truth, honesty and integrity that govern the search for and dissemination of knowledge?

“What are specific plans to enhance safety and security of schools and for eradication of cultism and sexual harassment?”

Onyechere said the ‘Project JESAC 2023’ had started with the process of identifying education-friendly candidates with clear, bold, courageous, visionary, strategic, and out-of-the-box action plans for addressing structural and systemic challenges in education.

He said this would be done through the assessment of education reform manifestos for 2023 general elections in Nigeria.

“It has been observed that the majority of education manifestos so far released by candidates for presidential, gubernatorial, senatorial, House of Representatives and state houses of assembly hide behind scant generalisations

“And this provides no specific reform initiatives for addressing specific aspects of the challenges in education.” Onyechere said.

He, therefore, called on stakeholders to join in signing the online petition for a comprehensive education manifesto by election candidates through the link: https://chng.it/vLw2hxXpfX.
