  • NHIA Act will ensure access to quality health care, says D-G

NHIA Act will ensure access to quality health care, says D-G

The Director-General of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Prof. Mohammed Sambo has assured the international health policy community that the NHIA Act recently signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari will accelerate the country’s efforts to bring access to affordable and quality health care to all Nigerians within the projected period.

The NHIA Bill was signed into law on May 19 2022, by President Buhari to increase Nigerians’ access to quality health care services without serious expenditures, especially for the vulnerable, indigent and less privileged people in society.

According to a statement by the Head of Public Relations of the NHIS, Emmanuel Ononokpono, the 10-year strategic plan, the Agency’s official document, projects the attainment of universal health coverage in 2030.

Sambo gave the assurance at the Royal Institute of International Affairs popularly known as The Chatham House, in London, with the theme “Universal Health Coverage in Nigeria: Optimising Institutional Opportunities and Partnership for Success.”

Delivering a paper called “Institutional Leadership for Universal Health Coverage in Nigeria,” Sambo noted that the Act provides the legal muscle to rapidly increase coverage by making health insurance mandatory for all Nigerians and legal residents. He added that this had been the single most significant impediment to the attainment of universal health coverage before now.

“Studies have shown that, globally, it is difficult anywhere in the world, for universal health coverage to be achieved without the element of legal mandatoriness. Every developed country where all her citizens have access to basic health insurance compulsion is not lacking,” he said.

Expressing the commitment of the NHIA to implement the spirit and the letter of the legislation, Sambo highlighted the thematic areas of implementation to include legal and regulatory, financial and technical and advocacy and sensitization. He also said all relevant stakeholders have been engaged and their support and buy-in received for smooth implementation of the Act.

  • Group hails JAMB Registrar Oloyede over reforms

Group hails JAMB Registrar Oloyede over reforms

The Transparency Advocacy for Development Initiative (TADI), a civil society group, has hailed the reforms introduced by the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Prof. Is-haq Oloyede to reposition the agency.

The organisation dismissed allegations of corruption against the Registrar, saying they were peddled by “few disgruntled members of staff of the Board who want the old way to remain.”

The TADI had submitted a petition to the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in respect of the allegations made by its sister organisation, Integrity and Transparency Watchdog against Prof. Oloyede.

However, in a statement yesterday in Abuja, the organisation said its independent investigation showed that the allegations were false and therefore had decided to withdraw its petition against the Registrar.

“As a civil society organisation that has integrity as our watchword, we cannot continue to be part of the selfish motive of some few corrupt individuals in JAMB that want to return the Board to the old ways and are hell-bent on dragging a man of integrity to the mud,” the Director of Media and Advocacy of TADI, Comrade Adamu Matazu said.

Matazu said the group’s findings showed that Prof. Oloyede had delivered beyond expectations.

He said: “We found out that the man has delivered beyond expectations. Some of his achievements in the past six years are many. The Prof. Oloyede-led management has, through prudent management of resources, blockage of all corrupt channels yielded over N50 billion to the coffers of the Federal Government.

“In his first year in office, he remitted N7.8 billion to the Treasury Single Account. The highest the Board had remitted in the 40 years of its existence before Prof. Oloyede was appointed was less than N70 million.

“The credibility of the examination has been improved through the credibility he introduced in the process chains and the inclusivity. As of today, the Board is one of the most sought-after public examinations in Africa. The Board receives requests for partnership from sister organisations to train their members of staff in new forms of the conduct of public examination.

“The Board, through the renewed image brought about by the innovations of Prof. Oloyede, conducts qualifying examination for several national and international organisations such as the Nigerian Medical and Dental Council for medical doctors who study abroad and want to practice in Nigeria, it conducts examinations for West African College of Surgeon and the West African College of Physicians for different medical specialties, oil companies, EFCC and the Immigration Service, among others.

“The Prof. Oloyede-led administration has completely blocked the corruption in admission by the introduction of an automated admissions platform called central admission processing system (CAPS) which has removed all human interferences in the conduct of admissions exercise in all tertiary institutions.

“He has constructed mega CBT centres across the country with befitting office accommodation.

“It’s on this note that we are going to write and withdraw all the petitions we’ve earlier written to the Anti-corruption agencies and to equally pass a vote of confidence on the leadership of Prof. Is-haq Oloyede.

“We urge him to continue to sustain the tempo and not give in to the evil machinations of those who are trying hard to distract him from the good work he has been doing.”

Residents protest Fed Govt’s inability to fix Otukpo-Enugu Road

The dilapidated state of Otukpo-Enugu Road has caused angst among residents of Benue State.

To express their displeasure over the horrid situation, the residents- comprising young men and women-gathered and held a pool party in mud waters to celebrate the 2022 Independence Day anniversary on the road to draw the Federal Government’s attention to their plight.

This, they reasoned, will encourage the government to fix the Otukpo-Enugu Highway that has fallen apart. The protesters and road users said their action will snowball into blocking the road to motorists, especially the government officials, if nothing is done to mobilise the contractor handling the project back to site.

According to them, the entire stretch from Otukpo through the heart of Ochi’doma place to Enugu Roundabout is now death trap.

While lamenting the economic waste the road has become, a truck driver who identified himself as Nwakama, appealed to the Federal Government to fix the road to save them from the huge losses of petroleum products.

The protesters carried placards with different inscriptions such as “Democracy has Failed Us,” among others.

For 10 years now, construction work has been ongoing on the Enugu-Otukpo-Aliade Road but not much has been done to fix the deterioration on the road which has claimed many lives and led to lots of economic losses.
