Nigerian conjoined twin baby girls return to Kano after successful separation surgery in Saudi Arabia

    …Governor Yusuf promises scholarship, welfare

Nigerian conjoined twin baby-girls, Hassana and Husaina Isa, who underwent a successful separation surgery in Saudi Arabia, on Friday returned home in Kano.

Governor Abba Yusuf, his deputy Aminu Gwarzo, and the Consular General of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Kano, Khalil Ahmed Al-Admawi, were at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) to receive them and their parents.

The life-saving operation was carried out at the King Abdullah Specialist Children’s Hospital in King Abdulaziz Medical City, Riyadh, under the directives of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud and the Crown Prince/Prime Minister, Mohammed bin Salman Abdulaziz Al-Saud.

On Tuesday October 30, 2023, the Saudi Medeval plane marked: HZ-MS4C airlifted Hassana and Husaina with their parents and other family members, departing through the Aminu Kano Airport.

On October 31, the conjoined twins, who were barely five days old then, arrived in Riyadh, where they underwent months of comprehensive medical examinations.

Doctors revealed that the twin sisters were joined at the lower abdomen, pelvis, spine and lower spinal nerves, sharing vital organs that made the case complex.

A team of 38 consultants and specialists, including experts in pediatric surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedics, urology, anesthesia, and plastic surgery, collaborated seamlessly to ensure the success of the operation, the Press Attache to Saudi Embassy in Abuja, Mohammed Alsahabi, said.

It was gathered that the surgery, which unfolded in nine stages, lasted approximately 14 hours.

“Each stage required precise coordination to safely separate the twins and reconstruct their individual systems. The successful outcome was hailed as one of the most challenging, yet rewarding achievements of the Saudi programme for separating Siamese twins,” Alsahabi said.

The Consular General of the Kingdom of Saudi (Al-Admawi) on Friday described the success of the surgery as a “demonstration of the Kingdom’s commitment to humanitarian service.”

“Saudi Arabia will continue to extend medical assistance and goodwill to countries in need, through King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre, especially Nigeria with which it shares historical ties,” he added.

It was gathered the separation of Hassana and Husaina is the 65th successful operation under the Saudi Siamese Twins Separation Programme, which has provided care for 150 sets of conjoined twins from 25 countries over the past 35 years.

    Separated twins get scholarship:

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano state on Friday, while receiving the separated conjoined twins at the airport in Kano, promised that the state government will give them a full scholarship to university level.

Yusuf assured he would fully support their welfare and healthcare, including routine medical checkups in Saudi Arabia.

“Even when I leave office, subsequent governments will be advised to continue to take care of them,” Yusuf said.

The twins’ father, Hassan Isa and his wife were all tears while thanking the governor of Kano and the Saudi government.

Adamawa Assembly gets bill allowing princes to act for incapacitated emir, chief

Adamawa State House of Assembly has passed a bill for a law to allow sons of emirs or chiefs to act for their incapacitated fathers.

The bill, which amends the Adamawa State Chiefs’ Appointments and Deposition Law no 20 of 2025, gives powers to the Governor to appoint a prince from the ruling house to act in place of the incapacitated emir or chief during the period of incapacitation.

The bill stipulates that the governor is to make his choice from three nominees provided by the traditional councils of any affected emirate or chiefdom.

The passage of the bill followed the adoption of the report of the House Adhoc Committee on the bill which recommended that “the traditional council in consultation with the governor may appoint a person to act in the place of an incapacitated chief/emir during the period of incapacitation”.

KADSEMA warns of heavy rains, flood risks

Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA) has warned residents of thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and flash flooding across the state between Wednesday, September 10 and 15.

The alert, based on forecasts from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), cautioned that the rains could cause waterlogging, disruption of transport, property damage, and possible overflow of rivers and streams in low-lying areas.

According to the advisory signed by KADSEMA Executive Secretary, Dr. Usman Hayatu Mazadu, stated that there might be cloudy conditions in the morning today, followed by intense evening rainfall.

The agency warned of high flood risk in urban centres with poor drainage, stressing that residents must clear blocked water channels, avoid low-lying roads, and stay away from riverbanks and flood-prone areas.

KADSEMA also advised farmers to secure crops and storage facilities, while households were urged to prepare emergency kits and brace for possible power fluctuations during the period.

“Residents should avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall. If travel is unavoidable, do not attempt to drive through flooded roads or running water,” the statement read.

Mazadu said emergency response agencies are on high alert and urged the public to report flash flood incidents via emergency numbers, or zonal hotlines provided by the agency.

He assured that the agency will continue to monitor the situation while urging the public to stay safe and follow official updates.

Fed Govt approves additional funds for Yola-Gombe Road project

The Federal Government has approved additional funding for the completion of the Cham-Numan section of the Yola-Gombe federal highway.

Controller of the Federal Ministry of Works in Adamawa State, Mr Demas Tuwai, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Yola, that the project had been delayed largely due to heavy rains, but expressed optimism that work would resume in the next six weeks.

According to Tuwai, the contractor has been transporting materials and equipment to the site to facilitate the completion of the project.

He appealed to road users to remain patient and drive cautiously through the construction area, assuring them that the road would be significantly improved once completed.

Meanwhile, some drivers had expressed frustration over the prolonged delay.

A commercial driver, Malam Sagir Dogo, said the poor condition of the road posed serious risks, particularly during the rainy season.

“This road is claiming lives and damaging vehicles every day,” he said.

Another driver, Hassan Umar, highlighted the security risks faced by motorists, especially at night.

“People are taking advantage of slow-moving vehicles to steal goods from trucks and other vehicles.

“We’re appealing to the Federal Government to complete the project quickly to save lives and property,” he said.

NAN reports that the Cham-Numan highway is a critical route linking Adamawa and Gombe states, and its rehabilitation is expected to boost regional connectivity and safety once completed.

    • Council chair accused of suspending legislative business•Chai: hall for renovation

The Benue State House of Assembly has dissolved its leadership and appointed new principal officers for the majority and minority caucuses.

In a statement yesterday, Press Secretary to the Speaker, Zape Michael Upaa, said the changes were designed to strengthen legislative business and enhance coordination within the House.

Thomas Dugeri is now Majority Leader, with Abraham Jabi, as Deputy Majority Leader. Cyril Ikong becomes Majority Chief Whip, while Simon Gabo takes the post of Deputy Majority Whip.

Abu Umoro has been named Minority Leader, supported by Cephase Dyako as Deputy Minority Leader. Samuel Jiji is the new Minority Whip, while Moses Egbodo assumes the role of Deputy Minority Whip.

The Assembly assured that further details on the reorganisation would be communicated later.

Also, the Legislative arm of Otukpo Local Government Area has accused the Chairman, Prince Maxwell Ogiri, of suspending their business. But Ogiri denied the allegation, saying it took the cation in public interest.

Leader of the Legislature, Philip Anya, in a petition to the state Assembly, said the chairman suspended the legislative business for insecurity.

In a letter dated September 8, signed by the Secretary to the Local Government, Simon Idenyi, directed the councillors to make use of social media for their legislative business for now

The letter read: “While the chairman is very much mindful of the fact that the postponement will affect the smooth running of the legislative arm for the time being, he, therefore, cannot take the security advice for granted.

“In view of this, the chairman wishes to advise the legislature to explore other platforms such as Whatsapp, Facebook etc to enhance legislative business for the time being.”

The members alleged that the chairman also ignored the directive of the governor and the deputy governor  to maintain the status quo on the earlier removal of the leader of the House.

The members not only called on the Assembly to condemn the continued closure of the legislature but to also set up an ad hoc committee to look at the report of the dissolved House Standing Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs over the alleged financial misconduct.

The members also called on the House to summon the chairman to tell them why he had refused to adhere to the directives of the governor and the House.

“That the Benue State House of Assembly immediately move in and take over the Otukpo legislative council and allow the councillors conduct their regular sessions under the watchful and protective eyes of the House of Assembly,” the petition read.

But, Ogiri said the reason for suspending legislative business was for the renovation of the dilapidated legislative chamber.

“Also, the council hall that the legislators have been using as a temporary chamber is being occupied by the Idoma Area Traditional Council and Bureau of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs for the selection of the vacant stools in Idoma land,” the chairman said.

Ogiri  was earlier recommended for six-month suspension by the Assembly for alleged misconduct but the suspension was reduced to one month by the governor Hyacinth Alia.

He had hardly spent a week of the suspension when the new speaker of the House, Alfred Emberger, lifted his suspension and that of two others.

Ogiri, who said he only resumed office on Monday, added that the impeachment of Anya and the House majority leader was done without his knowledge.

He also said he never ignored the directive of the deputy governor to maintain the status quo, saying the directive was given before he assumed office.

  • 2027: Kano Ullamas, others pray for Tinubu, Barau

2027: Kano Ullamas, others pray for Tinubu, Barau

Ullamas and supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the 44 local government areas of Kano State yesterday held prayers and animal sacrifice for divine guidance and success of President Bola Tinubu’s reelection.

The gathering also prayed for the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, to win the governorship election in the state come 2027.

The spiritual event, held at Gidan Baban Liya, Kurna, Kano municipal, was organised by the Tinubu/Barau/Atah Movement, chaired by Mohammed Sabiu Nuhu.

The group, which tipped the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Abdullahi Yusuf Atah, as Barau’s running mate for APC governorship campaign, explained that the Movement’s mission was to rally political support and solicit votes for the president and senate president ahead of the general election.

Highlight of the occasion was the slaughter of a ram for Allah (God) and a Special Islamic Prayer Session, led by Musa Babaliya, involving hundreds of Ullamas, mosques Imams, women and Qur’an reciting children. The prayer was for God, who gives leadership, to give the APC leaders electoral victory in 2027, the organisers said.

The Convener, Seyi Olorunsola said: “We are undertaking this spiritual aspect to have President Tinubu secure his second term election, and for Senator Barau Jibrin to win the governorship seat in Kano in the next election.

“President Tinubu has done incredibly well in just two years in office; look at the road projects, decline in food prices, employment opportunities and above all his efforts in tackling security challenges.

“In the last few years Nigerians who were crying of insecurity and high prices of essential commodities are now beginning to laugh, as they see real changes.

“We have everything it takes to deliver the president in Kano for the second term. Tinubu is a man of his words, who has kept faith and promises with the people and we are grateful indeed,” Olorunsola said.

On why Senator Barau Jibrin should fly the APC banner in the state, Olorunsola explained that he is the strongest person who can take over power from NNPP at the polls.

According to him, Atah, as Barau’s running mate, will be a sure ticket.

“Don’t forget that in the 2023 election we had problems in Kano Central because the current governor, Abba Yusuf, comes from that zone. Thank God, President Tinubu in his wisdom, appointed Yusuf Abdullahi Atah, who is also from Kano Central, as minister of state. Now, Atah, a former speaker of the state, is the best person to checkmate the governor in Kano Central.

“Also, while Kano North has Barau Jibrin with Kano Southern district having Senator Kawu Sumaila, by our calculation, the APC campaign team for the election in Kano will be so formidable that it will cruise to victory with ease,” Olorunsola said.

Also, Saminu Khalid Abdullahi, who is the Sarkin Yaki Matasa, said: “The Tinubu/Barau/Atah (TBA) Movement is a new support group established with the objective of mobilising grassroots support for President Bola Tinubu, Barau and Atah, while rallying citizens behind their laudable efforts in governance and nation-building, as we approach the 2027 general elections.”

  • Service chiefs deserve commendation, not destructive criticisms, says coalition

Service chiefs deserve commendation, not destructive criticisms, says coalition

A civil society coalition, Campaign Against Injustice (CAI), has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to disregard growing calls for the removal of service chiefs, stressing that such demands could demoralize the Nigerian Army, whose personnel “daily lay down their lives to keep Nigeria as one.”

In a statement signed by its convener, Abbey Jolaosho, CAI described it as unfair to blame service chiefs whenever security challenges arise without critically examining the broader situation.

The group was reacting to a recent demand by the Northern Ethnic National Forum, led by Dominic Alancha, for the sack of the military leadership.

CAI emphasized that Nigerians should commend the armed forces for their sacrifices, noting that many soldiers have paid the supreme price to defend the nation’s territorial integrity.

It argued that terrorism is a global phenomenon and highlighted challenges the military faces, including inadequate equipment, poor remuneration in the past, and governance failures at state and local government levels that fuel frustration and armed rebellion.

The group praised Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, for his leadership and commitment to troop welfare, as well as President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which increased daily allowances for soldiers from ₦1,500 and enhanced welfare packages.

It further urged governors and local government chairmen to support the federal government’s efforts, pointing out that with increased allocations, they must play a bigger role in improving living conditions and complementing military operations.

“Scrutiny should be directed at state and council officials who now have more than triple allocations to ease the people’s hardships and support the military, instead of transferring anger to the service chiefs who are doing all that is humanly possible to tackle insurgency,” CAI stated.

The group added that unfair criticism of the military contributes to desertions and discourages young people from enlisting, stressing that “good governance at the grassroots remains the strongest non-kinetic tool against insecurity.”

  • Buba Marwa: The tormentor of drug lords

Buba Marwa: The tormentor of drug lords

    By Yushau A. Shuaib

I was intrigued when Femi Babafemi, the spokesperson for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), sent me an email in the early hours of Wednesday, September 9, 2025. His press releases usually drop over the weekend, strategically timed to feed hungry newsrooms. I half-expected a bombshell—perhaps the arrest of the elusive kingpin behind Nigeria’s drug underworld. After all, under Brigadier General Buba Marwa’s leadership, dozens of drug barons have been apprehended and prosecuted.

But, the email was not about a new operation. It was a tribute to Marwa as he clocked 72; a reflection on a man whose leadership seamlessly blends military precision with civilian empathy. From his early days as Nigeria’s Defence Adviser in the United States, to his transformative governorships in Borno and Lagos States, and now NDLEA Chairman, Marwa has consistently left a legacy rooted in strategic foresight and people-centred governance. He is a leader who doesn’t just manage institutions; he reshapes them.

My first encounter with General Marwa was in 1997, while I was serving as Press Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Finance. Lagos State was hosting the monthly rotational Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) meeting, chaired by the Finance Minister of State, Alhaji Abu Gidado. At the opening ceremony, Marwa’s then-Commissioner of Finance, Mrs. Foluke Kafayat AbdulRazaq, spoke about Marwa’s integrity and vision as she highlighted his numerous achievements.

These included the massive rehabilitation of roads to boost commerce, the introduction of the now-iconic Keke Marwa tricycles to create jobs and provide affordable transport, and, remarkably, the governance of Lagos without resorting to bank loans. AbdulRazaq also praised Marwa’s commitment to urban renewal and his efforts to strengthen security through the creation of Operation Sweep. The cherry on top? When he left office in 1999, he handed over a cash surplus of ₦2 billion to his successor, Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

This story of sound financial management and impactful governance in Lagos State is well-documented. But what Babafemi’s tribute only hinted at—and what truly deserves louder recognition—is Marwa’s extraordinary transformation of the NDLEA into one of Nigeria’s most courageous and effective institutions. Under his watch, the agency has become a fearless force, confronting drug cartels that once seemed untouchable.

Week after week, NDLEA operatives carry out major arrests, seizures, and recoveries worth billions of naira. These are not just statistics; they are acts of immense bravery that put officers in direct danger, all in the service of protecting the nation. In a country where many leaders shy away from hard battles, Marwa has distinguished himself by daring to confront what others won’t. He has proven that his leadership at the NDLEA is not just about catching drug lords; it is also about addressing the drug crisis.

I’ve had the privilege of attending private briefings organized by Babafemi, where Marwa laid bare the grim realities of drug addiction in Nigeria. The statistics are emotionally jarring and deeply disturbing. Drug abuse is not merely a health issue; it is a national security threat that fuels violent crimes, such as armed robbery, rape, and kidnapping. Bandits and terrorists rely on narcotics to commit atrocities, including the rape of pregnant women and underage girls. Cultism, prostitution, and youth mortality are all deeply intertwined with substance abuse.

Perhaps most disturbing is the mental health crisis. Young Nigerians suffering from addiction often experience severe depression, psychosis, and schizophrenia. Many roam our streets, visibly broken, and are easily recruited by criminal networks. The long-term effects of drug use lead to brain damage, organ failure, and total system collapse. The economic toll is staggering, and our youth, who should be the engine of national development, are being drained of their productivity and potential.

Marwa’s approach to this crisis is a masterclass in strategic thinking. He understands that the fight against drugs must be two-pronged: a relentless assault on the supply chain and a compassionate approach to rehabilitation for those who have fallen victim to addiction. The NDLEA’s operations under his command have not only led to the arrest of high-profile dealers but also to the seizure of vast quantities of illicit drugs—cocaine, heroin, cannabis, and methamphetamine. This has effectively disrupted the flow of narcotics into our communities, making it more difficult for cartels to operate.

Marwa has also championed a more humane approach to drug users, advocating for treatment and rehabilitation rather than purely punitive measures. He has emphasised that addiction is a public health issue, not just a criminal one. This dual strategy—a firm hand against traffickers and an empathetic approach toward users—is what sets his leadership apart. It shows a deep understanding of the problem and a genuine desire to heal the nation, not just punish its offenders.

In a country often stalled by inertia, Buba Marwa shines as a symbol of bold leadership and unwavering public service. From cleaning up Lagos to confronting Nigeria’s drug cartels, his legacy proves that one courageous leader can drive lasting, transformative change.

Group alleges smear campaign against NAHCON chairman

A political support group, Tinubu Vanguard for 2027, said that it has uncovered a smear campaign allegedly targeting the chairman of the National Hajj Commission (NAHCON), Professor Abdullahi Usman.

In a statement on Tuesday, the group alleged that some individuals have sponsored coordinated media attacks to discredit the chairman of the commission and under the commission’s activities ahead of the 2026 Hajj operations.

The group called on security agencies to investigate the alleged campaign and bring those behind it to book.

The president of the group, Bisola Abdulkadir, said that attempts to malign the reputation of the chairman were politically motivated.

She added they were aimed at disrupting the commission’s plan for smooth running of hajj operations in Nigeria.

Abdulkadir warned that the campaign was ultimately aimed at President Tinubu, claiming that the sponsors were plotting to turn northern sentiment against the president by forcing the removal of the NAHCON chairman.

She said: “We have incredible information that millions of naira have been injected into a campaign to malign the chairman of National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) to derail the commission’s preparations.

“We urge the general public to disregard these politically motivated campaigns. What the commission needs now is support, not distraction.

“Such behavior to distract hardworking and committed public office holders for personal interests is totally unacceptable and Nigerians must rise to challenge people behind it.

“The Tinubu administration is working round the clock to provide good governance, but this must not be taken for granted. The government needs the support of Nigerians to deliver.”

However, the group commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima for the support to the commission.

The group added that the administration has shown commitment to smooth and transparent hajj operations.
