Japan, UNICEF to build 50,000 toilets in Northeast

The Japanese Government yesterday pledged to support the Federal Government’s recovering and resettlement efforts in the Northeast, using her experiences and expertise regarding the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II.

The Japanese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Matsunaga Katzuyoshi said this at a meeting with the Management of the Northeast Development Commission (NEDC) at its headquarters in Abuja.

Mr Katzuyoshi told the NEDC management headed by its Managing Director, Alhaji Mohammed Alkali that Nigeria is important to Japan in diverse areas and his country would like to expand the frontiers of collaboration toward supporting recovery and resettlement activities in the Northeast.

He said besides providing training and capacity building for the local population in the Northeast, about 50,000 modern toilets would be built in various communities to prevent open defecation as it has been discovered that 65 per cent of the population engaged in open defecation.

He said the Japanese company involved had already commenced work while the project is in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to promote hygiene and prevent diseases, especially among young girls.

He noted that the government of Japan and the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) are working together to transfer technology to Nigeria to solve social problems, adding that Toyota and Yamaha auto companies are already training mechanics from the Northeast in Lagos to enable them to repair cars and motorcycles in the region.

He regretted that persistent attacks in the Northeast have been a major problem for investment in the region by the Japanese private sector.

He said the Japanese government would key into the Master Plan developed by the NEDC with a view to providing humanitarian assistance, supporting infrastructure development and ensuring collaboration with border communities to return the region to lasting peace and security.

The Managing Director of the NEDC, Alhaji Alkali said about 75 million dollars would be needed to carry out immediate recovery and resettlement activities and projects in the Northeast following the havoc wreaked on the region by insurgent activities of Boko Haram.

He said NEDC had developed a Master Plan covering four major pillars recovery and stabilisation stage, the renewal and resettlement stage, the expansion stage and the sustainable growth stage.

Alkali said the Agency is in a hurry to hit the ground running and ensure the implementation of the stages of the project because the levels of impact differ from state to state and local government to local government as well as the communities.

He commended the Japanese delegation for visiting the Commission, noting that over 5,059 key projects are already on the list to be implemented by the Commission for the transformation of the socio-economic challenges in the Northeast.

The Head of Project Monitoring and Remediation Office in Nasarawa State Office Mr Noel Dilli made this known at a stakeholders’ meeting in Lafia yesterday.

Dilli regretted that, despite the laudable efforts to assist farmers to boost production, more than 80 per cent of the beneficiaries in the state were yet to repay their loans.

“Lack of repayment of the loans has brought a setback to the programme, thereby affecting chances of more farmers to benefit from the facility.

Coalition makes case for Senator Adamu-led APC NWC

A group within the ruling All Progressives Congress, (APC), the APC National Coalition for Mass Mobilisation, (NATCOMM), has urged  members across the country, not to engage the party leadership on issues that may cause unnecessary distractions.

The group said  the Abdullahi Adamu-led NWC must be allowed  to focus on the tasks of rebuilding the party and the next year’s  general elections.

In a statement  in Abuja yesterday  by  it’s  National Coordinator, Comrade Musa Ali Otigba, the group lauded the efforts of the Adamu-led NWC so far, describing them as commendable and in the right direction to develop the party.

He reminded them of how the cracks in the Adams Oshiomhole-led NWC that eventually ended the regime at that time, started.

“This is how the cracks in the Adams Oshiomhole-led NWC began  with small complaints by a member of the team, we thought it was a joke and before we knew it, it began to spread until it eventually ended that regime unceremoniously. We don’t want that to happen again. We must do everything within our powers to avoid that scenario from repeating itself, especially now that we have the general elections ahead of us”, Musa Otigba stated.

‘’We, want to advise our leaders at all levels to avoid unnecessary conflicts at this critical time. And where there are conflicts, we must be ready to explore the party’s internal settlement mechanisms instead of going to the media which cannot help to settle the issue but rather escalate it.

The Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport, Alhaji Tasiu Dahiru Dandagoro, said the earlier interchange projects at Kofar Kaura are 80 per cent nearing competition while the project at Kofa Quaya is 40 per cent.
