    ‘Why Senator Alimikhena deserves re-election’

A coalition of Etsako, Owan, and Akoko Edo political leaders and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftains has backed the third term re-election bid of the lawmaker representing Edo North Senatorial District, Senator Francis Alimikhena.

The group’s members claimed that there are moves by unnamed godfathers to truncate democracy in Edo North by scuttling Alimikhena’s aspiration, adding that this would spell doom for the party in the state.

The coalition, comprising former local government chairmen, vice-chairmen, former councillors and commissioners, stated this in a communiqué following a meeting, ahead of the forthcoming Edo North Senatorial election.

“Enough is enough to self-styled godfathers who have apportioned the state to themselves as their farmland,” they said.

They described the National Assembly as Nigeria’s stabilising force and not a place to elect people with “divisive tendencies to create chaos and instability rather than consolidate on the gains of our democratic experience.”

According to them, Alimikhena had created unfettered access between himself and his constituents. “He is one Nigerian with an extraordinary flame of passion for development and enhancement of the well-being of the less fortunate in the society,” they added.

Adamawa APC Gov aspirant, Theman promises 1m jobs

Immediate past Secretary of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Adamawa State, Hon Wafarninyi Theman, has unveiled an 8-point agenda, promising one million jobs within four years if he is elected Governor.

Theman, who was a Minority Leader in the House of Assembly from 2011-2015 when he represented Hong constituency, said he would provide skills and entrepreneurial training as well as create a small business loans guarantee scheme to facilitate job creation.

Wafarninyi, at the official declaration of his governorship ambition in Yola on Saturday, said his agricultural model would be to modernise the sector and move Adamawa farmers from subsistence to medium/commercial scale farming by injecting N30 billion into a mechanisation programme to create agro-allied jobs.

He indicated that he would do all within his 8-point agenda covering human capital development, job creation, economy, health and environment, security and governance, educational technology, agriculture and food security as well as sports/entertainment/tourism.

In a separate development, a senatorial aspirant for Adamawa South District under Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Peter Fwa, has dismissed a rumour that he had dropped his ambition.

“I am still in the race and have not withdrawn on anybody’s instruction whether expressedly or impliedly,” Fwa said.

He told newsmen in Yola that he was resolute in his quest to be the next Senator for the southern zone and will not step down for anyone.

Fwa, a former official of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCDA), did not elaborate but our correspondent reports he has allegedly been asked to suspend his ambition for incumbent Senator Binos Yaroe who has gained some popularity in a serial free health outreach that has covered some 70,000 people in all the nine LGAs under the Adamawa South district.

  • PDP, minister kick as court extends council chiefs’ tenure

PDP, minister kick as court extends council chiefs’ tenure

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has kicked against a judgment of a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) granting extension of tenure to the six elected council chairmen and all councillors in the territory.

Similarly, the FCT Minister, Mallam Mohammad Bello, also expressed dissatisfaction with the judgment.

The presiding judge, Justice Ibrahim Mohammed said he relied on the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 to grant the extension.

The chairmen and councillors were elected in 2019 for tenure of three years, as prescribed by the Electoral Act 2010.

Their three-year tenure expired on Wednesday and the newly elected chairmen and councillors were to be sworn in yesterday.

The minister was billed to swear them in yesterday when he was served a copy of the judgment.

The Electoral Act 2022, which came into effect on February 25, 2022, prescribed tenure of four years for the chairmen and councillors.

But the PDP faulted the judgment, saying that the Judge erred by giving retroactive effect to the Electoral Act 2022.

Reacting to the judgment, the spokesman for the PDP, Debo Ologunagba, said the Judge failed to take into account the consequences of his actions.

The party threatened to report the judge to the National Judicial Council (NJC) for disciplinary action.

The party urged the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Muhammadu Tanko to protect the integrity of the Judiciary by calling the judge to order.

The FCT Minister, in a statement, said he decided to obey the judgment even though he was not satisfied with it.

The minister said: “While complying, we are also making efforts to vacate the judgment and if the need arises, to appeal the judgment.

“In the interim therefore, we are very conscious of the fact that the stand of the court has raised a lot of concerns within certain sections of the Federal Capital Territory residents.

“I appeal to everyone to be calm and law-abiding.”
