29 regain sight at free health programme in Adamawa

Twenty-nine people, who lost their sights because of eye ailment complications, have regained their sights, courtesy of a health programme they benefitted from.

The 29 were among over 100 eye patients attended to by a team of doctors and other health personnel assembled for a free medical outreach in the Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

The Senator Binos Yaroe Free Medical Outreach achieved the feat at its 9th outreach to Lamurde where it received a total of 5,300 patients who were duly treated for different kinds of ailments they were diagnosed with.

The Head, Medical Consultant and Coordinator of the programme, Dr Talemoh Dah, who spoke to our correspondent yesterday on the outcome of the Lamurde outreach, said the matter of the blind receiving their sight after an operation had been performed on them had become routine occurrence to the outreach.

He said: “If you have been following us, Lamurde was the ninth council that we have covered since the beginning of this programme about three years ago. We see it all the time: people being led in because they are unable to see, and then walking out bright-eyed days later after they have been worked on, has become common to us.”

He explained that about the 100 people who reported eye problems of varying complexities to the Lamurde outreach, the 29 were those who had totally lost their sight, and they were successfully operated on by the time the five-day programme ended on Friday.

Ninety-four health personnel, including specialist doctors and nurses, availed their services to make the outreach successful, according to Dr Dah, who said he personally brought in 60 such personnel from around some states in the North, while the Primary Health Care Centre in Lamurde where the programme took place made 19 personnel available, with the Executive Secretary of the Primary Health Care Department of the Lamurde council, Howard Mamunna providing 15.

The Senator Binos Yaroe Free Medical Outreach, which is sponsored by Binos Yaroe, Senator representing Adamawa South Senatorial zone, had previously covered eight councils, namely Demsa, Toungo, Numan, Guyuk, Ganye, Shelleng, Mayo- Belwa, Jada, and last of all Lamurde between August 2019 and last week, during when a total of about 70,000 patients have been treated.

At the flag-off of the Lamurde Outreach, Senator Binos Yaroe had told reporters that taking free medical attention to the poor among his constituents has given him an immense sense of fulfilment.

The nine councils that the outreach has covered are the ones that constitute his Adamawa South Senatorial Zone.

  • Benue 2023: Who is Engr. Terhemen Tilley-Gyado?

Benue 2023: Who is Engr. Terhemen Tilley-Gyado?

At the moment in Benue, the talks among the people are about the 2023 gubernatorial elections. Permutations and analysis are being made about who could be the next governor of the Food Basket of the Nation.

But before the general elections, there are small battles for the choice of candidates for the major parties, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Being the top job, the gubernatorial contest has attracted no less the scrambling and controversy it deserves. This is because whoever gets the ticket in any of the two parties could become the next governor.

In about two weeks, stakeholders and the leadership of the Benue APC would be selecting and announcing its flag bearer. Over the course of the week in Makurdi and Abuja, a series of high-level meetings geared toward consensus and, or, free and fair primaries were taking place.

Findings revealed that over 30 people are bidding for the APC ticket. However, it was gathered that whoever is chosen out of the 10 aspirants from Vandeikya local government, which currently has the highest contenders and the most favoured by zoning, may win it.

The aspirants include Engr. Terhemen Tilley-Gyado; Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia; Prof Terhemba Shija; Ter Ikya and Jeffery Kuraun.

Others are Hon. John Tsuwa; Mr ESV Tyochimin; Prof Ben Yisa; Paul Uye; and Joe Waya.

Each of the candidates are great men in their own right, with the capacity to lead the state. However, if Benue’s zoning and socio-political arrangements are to be gone by, some ranks are more favoured. The news out there, according to findings, says Engr. Terhemen Tilley-Gwado is one of the aspirants being strongly considered. Given his rich ancestral family ties in Vandeikya LGA, Mba Dede Ward, rich profile, exposure, dazzling appeal as a relatively young man, and deep financial war chest, this is not surprising.

In 2019, Terhemen ran for a seat in the National Assembly to represent Vandeikya/Konshisha Federal Constituency. Despite running a strong campaign, which received much attention, he was undone by party consensus and he accepted the loss of the ticket in good faith. For his sacrifice and loyalty to party, distinguished love for the poor people and state, there is growing optimism that Terhemen’s time might have finally come.

Terhemen Tilley-Gyado is a UK-trained Engineer, seasoned project director, government relations and public policy expert. He spent his early years at Makurdi International School (MIS) and attended Secondary School at the Great Commission Movement’s Bethany Christian Academy in Jos, Plateau State. He acquired a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng.) in Civil Engineering at the University of Nottingham and was competitively selected for a bursarship to specialize in Transport Engineering at Imperial College and University College London, graduating with a Master’s in Transport Engineering (MEng.), and Diploma of Imperial College (DIC).

Upon graduation, Terhemen joined the Institute of Civil Engineers in the U.K and is a Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) registered engineer.

He has a professional track record spanning two decades, during which he has been involved in the conceptualization, design, planning and execution of large scale multi-billion-dollar infrastructure projects in Nigeria and the United Kingdom for private and government bodies.

He was head-hunted in 2013 by one of Africa’s leading conglomerates, to deliver a dynamic portfolio of infrastructure projects across Nigeria. He received multiple recognitions for his leadership and performance on the flagship projects. His astuteness in building not only physical infrastructure but also social and political capital, as well as his versatility, and technical depth, led the group to appoint him as head of Government Relations. This provided the opportunity to work on government policy, developing strong inter-governmental networks across multiple sectors including Oil and Gas, Power, Agriculture and Hospitality, at national, state and local level, and in both executive and legislative arms.

This remarkable profile in human and financial management, which belies his young age, resonates with the Benue aristocrats. But aside from the rich profile for the 41-year-old, Terhemen has a lot of other things speaking for him. One of these is a deep connection and appeal with the young people of Benue state. This has been helped by the resonating campaign message of #TodayToday, #GoodTime, and his ability to communicate perfectly in Tiv, Igede, Hausa, and English. The Benue youths who are currently disenchanted with the incumbent Governor Samuel Ortom and PDP, whose administration has been ridden with security and economic crises, are reportedly picking hope in the eloquent, proven builder of wealth and people.

According to sources, some key stakeholders cited his warm nature, humility, exposure, compassion, and wide contacts in the business world as key distinguishing qualities. It was gathered that during the recently held party national convention in Abuja, some Benue delegates could not stop chanting and singing his praise for the warm hospitality and generosity shown to party members in Abuja.

He is widely considered to be a man of compassion who would deeply care for the civil servants and general progress of the people and state, having consistently been engaging with prevailing social and economic issues that are central to the State’s prosperity. For instance, after the 2019 elections, he kept in touch with the grassroots with empowerment and other forms of support for trader women, youths, widows, and physically- impaired people. It was gathered that this has been very helpful in relating with the people and marketing the party, APC.

Described by development experts as a well-developed, simple and practical blueprint, The Good Time: Vision For Benue; an inclusive manifesto anchored on data, covers peace and security, workers’ welfare, economy, digital communications, education, climate and environment, and Agriculture mechanization. If eventually given the ticket, it is believed that a ready, forward-looking man gets it with a mandate to bring back a ‘good time’ in the state.

Quite remarkably, Terhemen Tilley-Gyado’s guber bid is also reportedly favoured by the clout and respect his family commands in the state. The Gyado progenitor, Chief Gerome Gyado, was a wealthy businessman and philanthropist. Terhemen’s father, Senator Jack Tilley-Gyado is also a former senator of Benue North-East and ally of the current Minister of Special Duties and Inter-governmental Affairs, Senator George Akume. It is being said in many quarters that the Gyados, with a history of philanthropy and business impact across the state and country for close to five decades, could be APC’s best bet to win the state in 2023. This is being touted because TTG combines all the qualities and resources to move the state forward at this time.

  • We are still on strike, say Kaduna varsity lecturers

We are still on strike, say Kaduna varsity lecturers

The Kaduna State University (KASU) branch of the Academic Union of Universities (ASUU) said yesterday that it has not pulled out of the ongoing strike as alleged by the university’s management.

The union made this known in a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Dr Peter Adamu, and Assistant Secretary, Dr Akos Ibrahim, and made available to reporters in Kaduna.

The union dissociates itself from the purported circular released by the university authorities asking students and lecturers to resume academic activities on May 9.

According to the lecturers, the directive violates the position of the union in the current struggle.

“The attention of the union was drawn to a purported circular trending on social media platforms stating that KASU Management has pulled out of the current roll-over strike action declared by ASUU.

“Specifically, the memo dated April 26, 2022, directed all members of staff and students to resume academic activities by Monday, May 9, 2022.

“It is imperative at this point to clarify this and properly inform and educate the public that ASUU-KASU dissociates itself from the purported circular released by the university management.

“It purely violates the position of the union in the current struggle,” the union said.

The lecturers described the circular as a “ploy” to misinform the public, parents and guardians, and to blackmail the union.

The university management has a right to open the university while members of the union also have the legitimate right to continue with the ongoing strike action.

UNICEF worries over lack of micronutrients among children

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has warned that a significant number of Nigerian children, especially those under the age of five, are not getting enough micronutrients needed for their overall growth and development.

It further stated that although malnutrition accounts for 45 per cent of all child deaths,  with an increased commitment by stakeholders at the federal, state and local government levels toward ending malnutrition, nearly 50 per cent of the reasons children are dying could be averted.

Micronutrients, which are chemical elements or substances required in trace amounts for the normal growth and development of children, include vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin B 6 and 12, vitamin E, zinc, magnesium, and iron, among others.

The Nutrition Officer of UNICEF, Nkeiruka Enwelum, made this known in Enugu during a two-day media dialogue on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as child rights. She said: “A poorly nourished country is a poor country. All building materials come from food and water. They are called nutrients. Also, according to the National Population Commission (NPC) and the 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS), Nigeria is ranked number one in Africa and second in the world in terms of the number of malnourished children.

“Poor nutrition in the first 1,000 days of birth results in permanent damage to the child  and can also lead to death.

“Micronutrient deficiency affects everyone, especially children.

“Nigeria stands to gain a lot of health, educational and economic benefits with good nutrition. It costs $15 (N6,000) to prevent malnutrition through the delivery of high impact nutrition interventions. It however costs $120 (N60, 000) to treat malnutrition through integrated management of acute malnutrition (eight times the cost of prevention).”

  • Middle Belt Youths urge Adamu to consult Buhari before making comments on zoning

Middle Belt Youths urge Adamu to consult Buhari before making comments on zoning

Stakeholders in the All Progressives Congress (APC) have reached a decision to zone the presidency to the south ahead of the 2023 general election, the Middle Belt Youths Forum (MBYF) has said.

The youths urged the National Chairman of APC, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu to consult with President Muhammadu Buhari on the issue of zoning before making public statements on it.

In a statement signed by its leader, Godwin Meliga, the group said the consultation with the president, as the leader of the party, was important because Adamu is new in the saddle and a decision had already been reached on the matter.

Adamu on Friday said the party was yet to decide on which part of the country will get the party’s ticket ahead of the 2023 election.

The statement by the group read: “It is important at this point that Senator Adamu should consult with the leader of the party, President Buhari, before making statements that will continue to drag the party and the nation backward.

“The issue of where the next president should come from has since been settled by stakeholders.

“It is not in doubt that the consensus is that the next president should come from the South. Why is Adamu therefore talking from both sides of his mouth?

“Our advice for the elder statesman is that he should be consulting widely before making public statements on matters like this.”

  • FG seeks to revive 160 moribund textile companies

FG seeks to revive 160 moribund textile companies

The Federal Government says it will work on reviving the remaining 160 moribund textile companies in the country.

Presently, it says only seven textile companies are functioning below maximum capacity compared to the olden days when the country boasted about 170 companies, with each employing nothing less than 3,000 to 15,000.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Mohammed Abubakar, said this while receiving members of the National Cotton Association of Nigeria (NACOTAN) who paid a courtesy visit to his office.

He said, “I am very passionate about agriculture and I know that if we are to propose the idea of the resuscitation of the cotton industry to the President, he will do something about it and I will want us to collaborate because the cotton industry is one that needs to be resuscitated. My ministry, the various departments and the seed council will collaborate with you to bring this industry back to life to be vibrant and better than before.

“The resuscitation will boost large scale cotton farming in Nigeria and revive the textile industries that have become moribund for decades. In the 80s, Nigeria had about 170 textile companies, with each employing nothing less than 3,000 to 15,000 and above.

“Presently only 7 textile companies are functioning below maximum capacity, and reviving the remaining 160 companies will be the antidote that Nigeria needs to overcome her huge unemployment.”

President NACOTAN, Anibe Achimugu said the association wanted to seek better collaboration with the ministry and bring to its notice emerging challenges confronting the cotton industry and solicit for support.

He said Nigeria needs a revamped cotton industry to deal with the present huge youth unemployment, restiveness, banditry, drug abuse and migration issues.

He added, “NACOTAN has done a lot to improve our competitiveness at the sub-regional, continental and global levels. We have been able to create value for over two hundred thousand cotton farmers through seeds and input distribution supported with extension service support.

“The importance of cotton cultivation is such that a single tonne of cotton provides year-round employment for five people on average. The farmers have acquired banking culture, increased their yields (from about 0.4 to 0.75 ton per hectare) and better farm business practices.”
