The local government, in recent times, have been a target of attacks by gunmen, who engage in massive destruction of farmlands and crops put at N500million.

However, the state chapter of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN) has also accused the natives of poisoning their cattle, which they claimed led to the death of 90 cows.

The National President, Irigwe Development Association (IDA), Prince Robert Ashi, on Friday disclosed that two people were gunned down by killer herdsmen and twenty houses burnt in a midnight raid by the gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen.

According to him, the gunmen in their large number invaded Laake village at about 9:00 pm on Thursday and went on a burning spree, leading to the death of two people, five injured and twenty houses burnt.

His words: “The people of the village had retired to bed when the gunmen attacked the village at about 9:45 pm. They killed two people, burnt down twenty houses and injured five persons.   It is unfortunate that this kind of attack can take place when security men are trying to halt the orgy of killings in Irigwe land.

“Those who carried out this attack are still lurking around, many of them are on top of the hills around us but I don’t know why it is difficult for the security agencies to dislodge them.”

He therefore appealed to both the government and security agencies to come to the aid of Irigwe community.

  • Stop politicising security, KMPO tells K4K

Stop politicising security, KMPO tells K4K

A group, The Kwara Progressive Media Organisation (KPMO), has kicked against the calls by Kwara4Kwara, a coalition of loyalists of Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, for declaration of state of emergency in Kwara.

KPMO dismissed the calls as callous and unpatriotic, saying security matters should never be politicised by well-meaning individuals and organisations.

KPMO Focal Person Usman Lade, in a statement on Friday, said:

“The call for declaration of state of emergency in Kwara state has positioned Kwara4Kwara as an enemy of democracy and rightly placed them as a group that is ignorant of happenings in Kwara State.

“Anyone with sincerity of purpose and not out to play politics with the lives of Kwarans would acknowledge the efforts being put in place by the Kwara State Government and the security agencies to guarantee safety of lives and properties in the state.

“To set the record straight, the Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq led administration purchased and presented 20 new patrol vehicles and dozens of bulletproof vests to security agencies in the state, a gesture meant to strengthen rapid response, curb crimes and make the state safer.

“It is worthy of note that the Kwara State Government between 2019 and now has not only supported the security agencies in the state through the donation of operational vehicles and other security facilities, the government has also contributed to the welfare of the officers in a way not seen before in the state; a gesture evident in the renovation of some blocks and provision of pipe water to apartments in the mopol Barack along old Jebba road, Ilorin, and elsewhere.

“Also worthy of mention is that the Kwara State Government in partnership with the security agencies and local vigilantes in the state have been recording success in their clampdown on criminals in the state. These efforts have been successful with the arrest of criminals in the state.

Specifically, it is pertinent to remind the people of the state that the State Government in collaboration with security agencies launched an offensive mission in Kaiama, Baruten, Isin, Ifelodun, and Ekiti Local Government Areas in the efforts to smoke out criminals from the areas for the safety of lives and properties of the citizens.

“This amongst many other security operations have been put in place by the Kwara Government and were well-publicized. Similar efforts have been deployed in fighting cultism in some institutions in the state.

Recently, the Kwara State Government extended its commitment to protecting the lives of Kwarans by going as far as working with the parents of some students and security agencies who were abducted along Kaduna road, a state outside Kwara, to secure their release. This development can be testified to by various leadership of Kwara State students associations who were also involved in the success of the operation.”

The group added: “Government can take down many criminals without necessarily making noise about it because of the sensitivity of the issue. This strategy has been very useful and result-driven.

“The issue of security is a national concern. However, we want to say clearly that the Governor is working hard to secure the lives of citizens and we should all join hands with him to ensure that criminals are exposed, rather than making political comments capable of heating up the system. We would also like to encourage Kwarans to be security conscious and report any case of criminal activity or suspicious movements to the nearest police station and authorities.”

  • Tambuwal’s politics of inclusivesness, tolerance

    Tambuwal’s politics of inclusivesness, tolerance

Some of the desirable traits of Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, are humility, rationality, reasonableness and tolerance and I believe, these are the qualities that are propelling him forward to reach the enviable height he has attained thus far.

The trajectory of his politics has proved beyond doubt that Tambuwal does not believe in hurling insults and abuses on the opposition, let alone physically harming anyone in the name of partisan interest.

To illustrate this fact, I will start by narrating a recent incident, then go further down memory lane, to buttress my assertions. Last week, a delegation from a fellow contender for the PDP presidential ticket (Senator Bukola Saraki) came to Sokoto to consult with PDP stakeholders and seek their support for Saraki’s aspiration.

Guess what? Tambuwal promptly sent a delegation to receive the visitors at the airport, provided vehicles for them, received them on a courtesy call at the Government House and hosted them to dinner. What other politician can be so hospitable to a competitor?

In the course of his stewardship as the Governor of Sokoto State, Tambuwal has succeeded in the elimination of political thuggery by banning the use of any form of a weapon during campaigns, thereby restoring decency and peaceful conduct of elections.

In spite of sustained provocation from an opposition that is cultured in the primitive politics of bad blood, Tambuwal has introduced issue-based campaigns by turning attention away from personality attack, mudslinging, and bickering He has always extended an olive branch to the opposition, to embrace peace, close ranks and work with him to move the state forward.

The outcome of Tambuwal’s positive posture is glaring, made evident by the partnership existing between the state legislature, which is evenly composed of members of the main political parties in the state.

He has refused to witch-hunt even his sworn enemies and restrained from revisiting past government activities, let alone probe them. Instead, he moved on by endeavoring to complete and expand the projects they started.

Tambuwal allows people to express themselves freely and criticise him and his government. Anybody can go to a radio station or social media and say whatever they like, with some Clerics using their platforms to directly attack him and his personality but he never for once, got anyone arrested. This is tolerance at its peak

    Oh lest I forget!

Do you know that the State Secretary of the opposition APC is still a civil servant in the employment of Sokoto State Government but he was never harassed or intimidated?

Just what kind of a man is TambuwaI, I leave all people of reason to judge.

  • NDP review on 23% gender pay gap commences

NDP review on 23% gender pay gap commences

The review of the National Development Plan (NDP) 2021-2025 in view of women’s economic empowerment has commenced.

The review, which includes bridging the existing 23% gender pay gap, would identify policies that could be used to breach the gap in the country.

National President, Nigerian Economic Society (NES), Prof. Ummu Jalingo, said it is estimated that women earn 77% of what men earn while women spend around 2.5 times more time on unpaid care and domestic work than men.

She said women need to know their rights to enable them to negotiate for better pay by attaining certain privileges enclosed in hiring schemes that women are yet to explore.

She said this at a one-day technical review of the Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) components of the NDP in Abuja, organised by a coalition of 15 women-led Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Partnership for Advancing Women in Economic Development (PAWED) and Development Research and Project Center (DRPC).

Her words: “The gender wage gap is estimated to be 23%. This means that women earn 77% of what men earn, though these figures understate the real extent of gender pay gaps, particularly in developing countries where informal self-employment is prevalent. Women tend to spend around 2.5 times more time on unpaid care and domestic work than men.

“What I said are facts not just to drum up support for women. When women know their rights they can negotiate their pay and sometimes there are certain privileges that are enclosed in our hiring schemes that women need to explore, you can have some degree with your counterpart but for some reason, he will have better negotiation skills and upscale you, when we look at this, we feel this are areas that we feel women should be very conscious of when it comes to hiring for instance in organisations.

“They should also look at best practices in other climes for instance when it comes to hiring different people of both genders and we know that we are productive and women take maternity leaves that make them stay off the jobs, these are things that organizations should put in place and these are done in some societies where paternity leave is also given to male counterparts. So we look at the National Development Plan as it affects women economic empowerment and reviews it to see the extent of some of the gaps that we hope to identify could be breached.”

Executive director DRPC, Dr. Judith-Ann Walker said the analysis meeting was designed as a training session to equip and empower women’s economic development associations with technical skills and knowledge to be able to conduct technical analysis of government’s policies and programs.

She added, “At the end of the meeting, the representatives will be able to apply their new skills to state-level economic policies and programs to assess responsiveness to women’s needs and challenges in business.”

  • Residents, scavengers clash as FCTA demolishes illegal structures

Residents, scavengers clash as FCTA demolishes illegal structures

Residents of Utako Village yesterday engaged scavengers in a serious fight as they tried to salvage their properties after the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) demolition bulldozers tore hundreds of illegal shanties.

The scavengers, who defied the presence of security operatives at the demolition site, were seen snatching different materials from their lawful owners who were overwhelmed by the pains of the demolition.

Director, Department of Development Control Muktar Galadima explained that the cleanup exercise was not just a routine one, but a special operation to remove all illegal structures and pave the way for the original allottees to regain their land.

Galadima noted that quit notice had been given to the squatters long ago to enable them to relocate.

The Senior Special Assistant on Monitoring, Inspection and Enforcement to FCT Minister, Ikharo Attah said the operation was also targeted at addressing perennial traffic and criminal activities in the area.

Attah, who also doused the tension generated over speculation that the homes of the indigenous people within the village would be demolished, assured the people that only illegal structures on the land allocated to the FCT Police Command were earmarked for demolition.

He also added that the cleanup exercise would help to restore the environmental sanitation and aesthetic state of the Utako District.

“We are only removing the illegal shanties to reclaim the land for the original allottees.  We are not demolishing the houses of indigenous people.

“The cleanup will also help to address the disturbing traffic gridlock and also criminal activities of miscreants in the place” Attah said.
