The Kogi state government has officially handed over the site for the construction of the Iyale-Odolu Efu-Oganenigwu road to Swaleys Nigeria Ltd for the commencement of work.

The ceremony, which took place on Tuesday, 2nd September 2025, at Odolu Efu in Oganenigwu Ward, Dekina Local Government Area, was performed by the Ministry of Energy and Rural Development on behalf of the state government.

Speaking at the event, the Kogi State Project Coordinator of RAAMP commended Governor Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo for embarking on the construction of the road after several decades of neglect, noting that the project would open up rural communities and ease transportation challenges.

On his part, the managing director of Swaleys Nigeria Ltd expressed appreciation to the government for entrusting the company with the project. He described Governor Ododo as a leader with deep concern for rural communities in Kogi State.

According to him, the project was designed in phases: the first phase involved survey and tracking, which had been completed a few weeks ago, while the second phase, which has now commenced, involves clearing, setting out, and full construction work.

Thousands of residents from the area, cutting across 11 communities in Oganenigwu Ward, namely Ajachaga, Ajatalawo, Odolu Efu, Odolu Ojegbe, Otutulu, Awujeje, Oti Ate, Oti Ogane, Ugbabo, Ajadafo, expressed excitement over what they described as a wonderful development in the history of their ward.

A community leader, the Gago, recalled that the road had been in a deplorable state for several decades, leading to enormous losses of abundant farm produce due to the lack of access roads to nearby markets in Anyigba and Bagana.

Also speaking, a critical stakeholder from Oganenigwu Ward, Dr. Ocholi Hassan Abdulrahman, thanked Governor Ododo and his predecessor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, for coming to the rescue of the people.

He lauded the governor for keeping his campaign promises, describing him as a “perpetual promise keeper.”

Meanwhile, the contractor has officially commenced work on the site.

  • Tinubu to inaugurate 6,000MT lithium plant in Nasarawa

Tinubu to inaugurate 6,000MT lithium plant in Nasarawa

President Bola Tinubu is set to visit Nasarawa State to commission a newly completed 6,000-metric-ton lithium processing plant built by Chinese investors.

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State who announced this to reporters at the State House on Wednesday after a closed-door meeting with the President, said the project marks a major boost for Nigeria’s mineral value chain.

The new facility, located in Nasarawa Local Government Area, is twice the size of the 3,000MT capacity plant launched in 2023.

Although he did not give a specific date, the governor disclosed that the commissioning will take place shortly after the President returns from a two-week trip to France scheduled to begin later this week.

“They promised to build a bigger one, and they have just concluded building it. It is ready for commissioning. Mr. President assured me that on his return from his short vacation, he will come to Nasarawa to commission the project,” Sule said.

The development underscores Nasarawa’s emergence as a key hub in Nigeria’s growing lithium sector.

Lithium, essential for electric vehicle batteries and energy storage systems, has drawn significant foreign investor interest amid the global shift to clean energy.

Sule noted that the project is the result of strong investor confidence in the state’s mineral resources.

“Last year, we commissioned a 3,000-metric-ton capacity lithium processing plant in Nasarawa Local Government. During that time, another set of investors, excited by the quality and volume of our deposits, committed to building something bigger. They have now fulfilled that promise,” he explained.

The Federal Government has in recent years pushed for more value-added investments in solid minerals.

In May, it disclosed plans to commission at least two Chinese-backed lithium processing plants in 2025 as part of its strategy to curb raw mineral exports and strengthen domestic refining capacity.

Officials say the Nasarawa plant is among several projects backed by China-based companies following exploratory surveys confirming commercial-grade deposits in the state.

The Ministry of Solid Minerals has also hinted at restricting lithium exports to encourage in-country processing, mirroring policies in Indonesia’s nickel industry and Zimbabwe’s lithium sector.

Governor Sule tied the state’s expanding industrial capacity to reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration, including fuel subsidy removal and naira unification, which have boosted revenue for infrastructure development.

“With the huge improvement we have seen, we are able to proceed without borrowing. Instead of going to the banks, we are utilising the improved resources we now have,” the governor said.

Earlier this year, President Tinubu declared Nigeria’s ambition to position itself as a regional hub for lithium-ion battery and solar panel manufacturing, citing the nation’s abundant mineral wealth and the surging global demand for clean energy technology.

The Federal Government has also launched a mining police unit to clamp down on illegal mining, particularly in the north-central region, where artisanal operations have proliferated.

  • Contractors beg Tinubu for payment of N4tn for 2,024 capital projects executed

Contractors beg Tinubu for payment of N4tn for 2,024 capital projects executed

The All Indigenous Contractors Association of Nigeria (AICAN) has appealed to President Bola Tinubu for the payment of completed 2,024 capital projects worth over ₦4 trillion.

The contractors said thousands of their members across the country are being pushed into debt, sickness, and financial ruin as a result of the non – payment of their outstanding balance.

Speaking during a protest in Abuja on Wednesday, the association’s President, Jackson Nwosu, said despite government claims that payments for the 2024 capital projects had been made, less than one per cent of indigenous contractors had received funds.

He said, “They have been owing us since last year for over 2,024 capital projects.

“Out of more than 15,000 contractors, they have only paid about seven. Yet, they go around claiming that all payments have been settled. That is a lie. If they had paid us, we would not be on the streets.”

Nwosu lamented that many of their members had died waiting for payment, while others struggled to pay school fees and settle debts with banks.

“We are dying. Financial institutions are on our necks every day because the government claims to have paid us, but they haven’t. We will remain on the streets until every last contractor is paid,” he said.

The group alleged that ministries and agencies had stopped forwarding approvals to the Federal Ministry of Finance due to a funding freeze, worsening the backlog.

National Secretary of the association, Babatunde Seun accused some government officials of insincerity and selective payment.

He said contractors had fulfilled their obligations by completing projects but were left stranded because warrants issued for February and March were not backed by cash.

Seun said, “They always pay just one or two people and leave the rest. We met with the Finance Minister and the Accountant-General, who assured us of payments within 48 hours. But nothing has happened. Some of us have lost our cars and properties to banks. We cannot even pay workers or our children’s school fees.”

Seun appealed directly to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to intervene personally.

“He was once a contractor and understands this struggle. If he instructs the Finance Minister to pay today, the money will be released,” he said.

A member of the association, Davison Ahamefule said he executed a government contract in 2011 and received only half payment two years later.

“They verified the project, but since then nothing has been paid. The interest rates from banks have swallowed everything. I am pleading with the government to pay us,” he said.

  • Finance Commissioner refutes debt claims, reaffirms sustainable fiscal management

Finance Commissioner refutes debt claims, reaffirms sustainable fiscal management

The Kogi  Commissioner for Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, Hon. Asiwaju Idris, has dismissed as false and misleading a publication alleging that 80% of the State’s revenue will be committed to debt servicing over the next three years.

In a statement, Hon. Idris stressed that under the leadership of His Excellency, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, debt servicing has been placed on a sustainable path, freeing resources for development and social investment.

“The claim that 80% of our revenue will go into debt servicing is unfounded and inconsistent with verifiable fiscal data. Since coming into office, the administration of His Excellency, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, has sustained responsible financial management, ensuring that debt service obligations remain well within globally accepted thresholds. This has created fiscal space to fund infrastructure, healthcare, education, and other people-centered programmes,” the Commissioner explained.

Official reports published by the State Government show that debt servicing as a share of total revenue has consistently declined:

    29% in 2020

    15% in 2021

    11% in 2022

    11% in 2023

These figures are far below the 40% international sustainability benchmark and confirm that Kogi State’s debt position is stable and well-managed.

The 2024 Debt Sustainability Analysis (DSA) further projects that debt service obligations will remain sustainable up to 2033, firmly disproving any claims of 80% debt commitments.

Hon. Idris also reaffirmed that Governor Ododo’s administration continues to uphold transparency and accountability by publishing budgets, debt sustainability reports, and citizens’ guides on the State’s official website, allowing the public to verify financial records directly.

The Commissioner further noted that as at March 31, 2025, the Debt Management Office ranked Kogi as the State with the 5th lowest domestic debt nationwide.

Governor Ododo’s administration is committed to prudent debt management, improved internally generated revenue, and accountability in the use of public resources. These are the hallmarks of a government determined to secure lasting prosperity for the people of Kogi State,” the statement concluded.

Adamawa Forum empowers young persons with disabilities with career, business skills

Jobberman Nigeria, a foremost career development and recruitment solutions company in Nigeria, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, successfully hosted a special career and business forum for Persons With Disabilities in Adamawa State.

The event, themed, Empowered to Achieve More, was designed to provide job seekers and business owners (existing and aspiring) with direction on how to advance in their growth pursuits.

Participants at the event raved on and on about the impact of the event on their plans going forward. Aminatu, an aspiring business owner with visual impairment, said she received counselling from the counsellors on how to go about her business set-up.

“The counsellor told me that I may need to get more training on business operations and also check with Jobberman to help me get loans from a bank like the FCMB loan they mentioned,” she explained.

Another participant, a school teacher living with albinism, expressed his deep satisfaction at how much the panel session opened his eyes to the need for compassion in dealing with people who do not have disabilities and may be unpleasant in their exchanges with him.

“People always make fun of us and say that we cannot see anything, and I used to get very angry, but today I have learned to be patient and understanding with them, especially as a school teacher. I will be more patient with my students”

One of the panellists, Ms Grace Dauda, a farmer and shoemaker, encouraged the attendees with her story.

“I used to crawl to my farm to plant, and people would just look at me, some with pity, others with awe. I knew that I needed to show that I am only physically challenged and not completely helpless. That was the first step in getting people to even see my plight and help me. So, people with Disabilities should not hide or be shy. Nobody can help you if they don’t see you”

Her story created a palpable hope in the room that the event’s objectives are indeed achievable for Persons With Disabilities.

In her welcome speech, the Senior Consultant, the Strategy team, Jobberman Nigeria, Oladoyin Kolawole, iterated the organisation’s commitment to providing the necessary all-encompassing support for career and business advancement to jobseekers and business owners, especially Persons With Disabilities in marginalised places.

“The Mastercard Foundation, in partnership with Jobberman Nigeria, is committed to giving not just a voice to marginalised persons such as women and Persons With Disabilities, we are also putting measures in place to create opportunities for them to dream freely and achieve those dreams, whether in a career path or in an entrepreneurial pursuit. We want them to be able to hold their own regardless of the obstacles in their paths, and this event is one of the many ways we are helping them win”

The special career and business forum featured a comprehensive programme including a riveting panel session where the panellists shared real-life analogies, examples and anecdotes for not just surviving as a Person With Disability but thriving and forging on with the tools at one’s disposal. The session was followed by a career and business counselling session where participants had the chance to ask questions about their peculiar situations and plans.

The transformative impact of the events was echoed in the feedback from several participants during the feedback session. A young man with a hearing impairment said the event was the first time he felt heard because nobody usually paid attention to people with disabilities like him. Another participant said they were very happy to be among their kind and to repeatedly hear that they should be bold. Others gushed about the counselling session and how great it felt to be able to speak to someone about their dreams. A young woman said she didn’t know how to prepare for an interview prior to the Forum, but had learnt to arrive on time, not loiter, come with a detailed CV, and speak boldly.

The Adamawa Forum for Persons with Disabilities reiterated Jobberman’s position as a committed agent of positive change in the world of work, transforming upcoming and established professionals in their respective career journeys. The event was a testament to the organisation’s mission to empower Persons With Disabilities with skills and opportunities for growth in both employment and entrepreneurial endeavours.

Kefas Ropshik rewards excellence, calls for improved welfare for Nigerian doctors

The Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) came alive on Sunday as newly qualified doctors were inducted into the medical profession, with philanthropist and business leader, Chief Kefas Wungak Ropshik, using the occasion to advocate for better welfare for Nigerian doctors.

Addressing dignitaries, parents, and students at the New Multipurpose Lecture Theatre of the University of Jos, Chief Ropshik warned that Nigeria risks further depletion of its medical workforce unless urgent measures are taken to retain doctors within the country.

“Our nation must rise to the challenge of keeping its best talents,” he declared. “Improved salaries and welfare packages are not luxuries; they are necessities if we want healthcare delivery to thrive here at home.”

In addition to his strong message, Chief Ropshik rewarded excellence by donating ₦3.1 million to the best graduating doctors and pledging sponsorship for the overall best student to pursue postgraduate studies. His remarks and gesture were warmly received by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Professor Tanko Ishaya, and JUTH’s Chief Medical Director, Dr. Pokop Wushipba Bupwatda, both of whom praised the initiative as inspiring and impactful.

In a separate humanitarian gesture, Chief Ropshik also reached out to the Boys Brigade Nigeria, an organisation he credited with playing a pivotal role in shaping his character. The day’s events underscored his consistent philosophy: investing in people, supporting institutions, and championing the development of a stronger society.

  • Insecurity: declare state of emergency in north, Northern Elders tell Tinubu

Insecurity: declare state of emergency in north, Northern Elders tell Tinubu

…says Nigeria’s stability, regional security under threat

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) on Wednesday called on President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in northern Nigeria.

NEF cited the scale of insecurity and the government’s constitutional and international obligations to protect lives.

The forum lamented that state security agencies remain overstretched, under-resourced, and in some cases complicit through inaction, leaving citizens vulnerable while eroding public trust in government.

In a communiqué signed on Wednesday by its spokesperson, Professor Abubakar Jika Jiddere, the forum expressed grave concern over the spate of violent attacks, abductions and killings across the region, warning that continued inaction could threaten Nigeria’s stability and regional peace.

The NEF recalled the August 19 attack on a mosque in Unguwan Mantau Village, where armed assailants killed at least 27 worshippers during early morning prayers, leaving several injured and displacing hundreds

It also condemned the execution of 35 abductees in Zamfara State despite ransom payments, as well as two separate attacks in Kaduna State’s Kauru and Kudan LGAs, which left eight dead and eight others severely injured.

Jiddere said, “These incidents are not isolated cases, rather they are part of a persistent pattern of organised criminal violence and banditry that have claimed thousands of lives, displaced hundreds of thousands of citizens, undermined food security, crippled economic cripple activity, and

Inflicted deep psychological and social trauma on individuals and several communities.

“The NEF observes with deep regret that the state security architecture remains inadequate, overstretched, and in some cases complicit through inaction and silence, leaving citizens vulnerable and helpless while eroding public trust in government institutions.”

Citing the 1999 Constitution, the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, he said: “Article 6 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) states that the inherent right to life shall be protected by law, and no one shall arbitrarily be deprived of life.

“The recurring atrocities in Northern Nigeria constitute serious breaches of these obligations, and in their scale and persistence, will amount to crimes against humanity under international law and humanitarian cases.”

The forum urged the Federal Government to: “Declaring a State of Emergency in Northern Nigeria, acknowledging the extraordinary scale of the crisis. Deploy adequately trained, armed, and equipped security forces with clear rules of engagement to protect civilian populations and secure international border regions.

“Provide adequate compensation, rehabilitation, and humanitarian assistance to victims, including displaced persons, in line with international humanitarian standards. Strengthening border control and regional cooperation with neighbouring states under ECOWAS and the African Union protocols, to stem cross-border incursions by armed criminal groups.

“Engaging international partners, including the African Union (AU) and United Nations (UN), for technical and humanitarian support.”

The NEF emphasised that continued inaction or insufficient responses to all these security challenges will not only exacerbate human suffering but also jeopardise national cohesion, democratic sustainability, stability of the polity, and regional peace.

NEF called on the government to act immediately, decisively, transparently and in full alignment with Nigeria’s domestic and international obligations.

The forum pledged to continue monitoring developments while engaging stakeholders nationally and internationally to ensure urgent relief for affected Northern communities.

CRUDAN trains Southern Kaduna communities on early warning system for farmer-herder peace

The Christian Rural and Urban Development Association of Nigeria (CRUDAN), with support from Tetra Tech Technologies (SPRING), has trained stakeholders in Kaura and Zangon Kataf Local Government Areas of Kaduna State on early warning and response systems to curb recurring farmer-herder conflicts.

The five-day capacity-building programme, which ended in Zonkwa, brought together community leaders, youths, women and herders to design practical mechanisms for anticipating and de-escalating disputes before they spiral into violence.

CRUDAN Project Coordinator, Michael Agon, described the initiative as a timely step to equip communities with tools to manage conflicts at the grassroots. He said early response committees were set up in three communities—Kpunyei, Chenchuk and Mifi Attackar—to serve as lasting structures for dialogue, monitoring and collaboration.

“We cannot continue to wait for conflict to escalate before acting. The early warning system gives our communities the ability to anticipate and manage disputes before they become violent,” Agon said, stressing that community ownership was key to sustaining the structures.

Peacebuilding and Conflict Management Officer, Tulari Tine, who anchored the training, noted that while conflict was inevitable, violence was not. He said the programme armed participants with conflict mapping, analysis tools and collaborative planning tailored to local realities.

“The system is not about waiting for government to intervene; it is about empowering the people themselves to resolve issues before they escalate,” he added, urging stronger partnerships between traditional leaders, youth, women and security agents.

Traditional rulers, including the Dakachi of Chenchuk, Filibus Jatau, and his Kpunyei counterpart, Joseph Biliyock, hailed the training for fostering dialogue between farmers and herders.

Youth leader, Sunday Musa, said the sessions had transformed young people from potential agents of violence to ambassadors of peace.

Over the five days, participants worked with tools such as the “Conflict Tree” and “Peace Flower” to examine root causes and build resilience. The training culminated in joint action plans and the inauguration of inclusive early response committees with membership drawn from farmers, herders, security agencies and women groups.
