Rise up, don’t remain the same, Pam urges Christians

Christians have been urged to rise up and not remain where they are, as the mission of Jesus Christ through his birth was to restore human dignity and establish his kingdom here on earth.

The call was delivered at the third annual family Christmas Carols and Nine Lessons organised by the family of the Executive Secretary, Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission, NCPC, Rev Dr. Yakubu Pam.

According to Rev Pam, “Christmas is a period of burden sharing”. Just as Christ took our burden and nailed them to the cross, so “are we expected to be burden sharers”!

He said today’s Christians have strayed away and are engaged in frivolities, talking against each other rather than building one another.

“The mission of Christ is to restore us like the prodigal son who was lost but returned back to his senses.

“The prodigal son was celebrated because his hour came. No matter your situation, whether you’re dirty, unkempt or a thief, your hour will come.

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Prof Abdul-Rasheed Na’allah, has called for a regular assessment of Nigerian professors, given their contribution to industrial and national development.

He said such evaluation would accelerate academic-driven industrial and economic growth.

The vice-chancellor made the call when he addressed journalists in Abuja at the University of Abuja and Abuja Chambers of Commerce and Industry Day celebration, a day set aside to foster academic-industry collaboration for nation-building.

Prof Na’allah urged the Federal Government to institute a strategy to evaluate each professor in the country on a three-year basis to ascertain their level of collaboration and relationship with industries in propelling economic growth.

The result, the VC said, would see the nation progress rapidly.

He said: “Currently as it is, when people become professors, it is like a chieftaincy title and people may not do anything anymore. “All academic staff should have a day of industry where they can go out and liaise with the industries on how they can help the industry in the area of collaboration in research.

“If professors are assessed with the grant they bring in, in collaboration with industries; I’m telling you, this nation will move forward with a rapid progression that everybody will be surprised because professors are at the highest level of development in this country….

Director-General of ACCI, Victoria Akai, said collaboration with the university would foster capacity building in research, skill acquisition and knowledge transfer for national development.

Thesis digitisation project will end plagiarism in tertiary institutions – TETFund

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has commenced a process to digitise theses and projects in the nation’s tertiary institutions of learning to ensure seamless access to research outputs and end the ‘evil’ of plagiarism.

Executive Secretary of TETFund, Prof Suleiman Bogoro, made this known at a workshop on thesis digitisation project for beneficiary institutions in Abuja.

He said: “We want to dematerialise and electronic theses and projects by starting with thesis at PhD and master’s levels across our beneficiary institutions and we hope we extend it to the private institutions.

“The idea is simple; the world has gone digital. We cannot continue to operate analogue. We know that a number of materials from theses at postgraduate level and even undergraduate have literally disappeared.

“Where there are fire incidents, physical papers are burnt and the theses gone. But if we are able to dematerialise them and they are stored in different forms in different repositories, it will be easier to access and the protection of the materials is guaranteed.

He explained that the decision of TETFund to fund digitalisation of thesis was also to shore up ranking of universities and other tertiary institutions in the country, noting that plagiarism in higher institutions has become a source of worry.

“If you want to reproduce the outcome of a particular work and you want to claim it, you know that it is unacceptable and a criminal act. Even though you are a professor, you can lose your title as a professor, if it is confirmed you plagiarised,” Prof Bogoro said.

Speaking further, Bogoro said the workshop was to bring together Librarians, Directors of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Desk Officers to address key issues on collective academic research output by bringing ICT and digitization to bear.

In a presentation, the Director of Education Support Service of TETFund, Mustapha Gotala, said the digitisation project would reposition Nigerian tertiary education institutions for better performance.

Represented by his Deputy, Kolapo Gotala said the funding for thesis digitisation would be sourced from TETFund’s intervention in library development for each of the beneficiary institutions as contained in their allocation letters.
