  • Popular Farmers inaugurate rice collection centre in Kano

Popular Farmers inaugurate rice collection centre in Kano

Popular Farmers has inaugurated a modern rice collection centre in Dakaosye – Kura Market, Kano State. Beginning from 2011, the company has established 21 collection centres in rice cluster areas in 18 states across Nigeria.

Suleiman Umar, Programme Manager of Popular Farms and Mills Limited, said the main purpose of the centre is to train farmers on modern rice production technology and give them good market prices, provide inputs and mechanised services as well as agrochemicals at fair prices.

Umar said the Dakaosye centre has targeted at least 150 rice farmer cooperatives, which consists of 5000 farmers who would be trained in a year.

Lawal Maitama, who is the Principal Manager, Development Finance Office, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), hailed the Popular Farmers’ initiative as part of contribution to the federal government’s aim of giving capacity to farmers and local millers to see that local production and processing is up.

He said the CBN has been intervening in the agric sector since 1978 with the scheme loan agricultural credit guarantee scheme. This is in addition to a lot of other interventions such as commercial agricultural scheme and the recent Anchor Borrowers’ scheme.

He added that the CBN has also set aside funds for irrigation and for small holder farmers to access.

Amit-Rai, Managing Director, Popular Farms, said the target is to reach out to as many farmers in the village as the company can, and to provide good markets for them.

“The five basic concepts include: organising farmers into cooperative groups, give them training, link them with agricultural inputs and link them with companies that will be buying their goods, where sales and distribution are of fair price.

Alh. Ali Idris, Mai-Unguwa Vice Chairman, recalled that before the advent of the Anchor Borrowers programme, Nigeria was spending trillions of naira importing wheat, rice, sugar and fish. Nigeria imports more than half of the rice coming into Africa. So, exporting these commodities means we are extending our work to foreign nations.

“It is also the cardinal objective of this initiative for the CBN to see that food production increases and as a result of these activities, jobs are created along different value chains,” Idris said.
