‘Only Dikko Radda can salvage fortunes of persons living with disabilities in Katsina’

Special Adviser to Governor Dikko Umar Radda of Katsina State, on the disabled, Lt. Hudu Usman (rtd), has stated that only Governor Dikko Umar Radda of katsina state cab address lack of domesticated law on disability and a Commission for same to ensure effective care for them in Katsina. AUGUSTINE OKEZIE WRITES:

Lt. Usman, in a media chat with selected media houses in his office in Katsina lamented the none passage of domesticated laws on disability as passed by the National Assembly in Katsina state, as well as the none existence of a commission for the disabled persons in the state, to ensure proper care and provisions for the disabled in the state, as steps only the Governor can take to salvage the plight of the disabled in the state

Usman further stated that the disabled in the state were being neglected and abandoned to fate

He said: ‘’Many of them were neglected, subjected to dangerous traditional practices and were on the verge of death’’.

‘’We took over 100 of them to the hospital. Some have shown significant improvement, others are still struggling, but without our intervention, I’m sure many would have died’’.

‘’The Executive Governor of Katsina State, Dikko Umaru Radda, heard about my work, invited me for a discussion and said he wanted me to help his administration coordinate disability affairs in the state’’.

‘’I accepted the offer because it was an opportunity to expand the impact of what I was doing on a wider scale’’.

The Ex-Naval officer also disclosed that the major problem when he resumed office was the lack of database of people with disabilities in the state, none domestication of the disability law and the absence of a disability commission that will ensure budgetary provisions and funding

He said’: I collected the data myself physically, painstakingly, and as of today, I have documented over 30,000 persons with disabilities across the state,  including those with spinal cord injuries, the visually impaired, hearing impaired, or physically challenged in other ways’’.

‘’But the data is not yet fully updated. Some individuals have died; others are yet to be reached’’

‘’What we need now is funding to finish this work properly and create a standardized, digital and accessible database for the disabled in Katsina ‘’ Another challenge is that Katsina state has not domesticated the National Disability Law, there is no Disability Commission and, consequently, no dedicated budget for this office’’.

‘’What that means is, we are forced to go through other ministries to access any funding for disability programs’

‘‘It’s unfortunate that President Buhari signed the Disability Act into law in 2018, but Katsina State, his home state, has yet to adopt it. We’ve been trying to push the State Assembly to revisit the draft bill from the previous administration’’.

‘’Many of them were neglected, subjected to dangerous traditional practices, and were on the verge of death. We took over 100 of them to the hospital. Some have shown significant improvement, others are still struggling, but without our intervention, I’m sure many would have died’’.

‘’The Executive Governor of Katsina State, His Excellency Dikko Umaru Radda, heard about my work. He invited me for a discussion and said he wanted me to help his administration coordinate disability affairs in the state. I accepted the offer because it was an opportunity to expand the impact of what I was doing on a wider scale’’.

‘’However, once I assumed office, I discovered a major problem: There was no database of people with disabilities in the state.

‘’So I began collecting the data myself physically, painstakingly. As of today, I have documented over 30,000 persons with disabilities across the state, including those with spinal cord injuries, those who are visually impaired, hearing impaired, or physically challenged in other ways. But the data is not yet fully updated. Some individuals have died; others are yet to be reached’’.

‘’ Since Katsina State has not domesticated the National Disability Law, there is no Disability Commission and, consequently, no dedicated budget for this office. What that means is, we are forced to go through other ministries to access any funding for disability programs.

The former Naval officer further stated that the Governor has expressed support to ensure that the pending bill on disability at the state house of assembly will be represented for review, corrections and passage

He said ’’We’ve been promised a joint session soon to iron out the “lacunas,” and I plan to formally request that His Excellency write to the Assembly directly. If the disability bill is passed into law we can finally have a commission and our budget and other moves will pass all these bottlenecks’’.

“Right now, we’re working without a structure. There are no state-run rehabilitation homes, no centres for the blind or deaf, and no organized system to support these people. If an NGO doesn’t step in, they suffer. The lack of a legal framework means no institutional responsibility’’.

Katsina, UNDP, launch action plan to resettle 270,000 displaced IDPs to their ancestral homes

The Katsina State Government  in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, yesterday in Katsina, launched a statewide policy and action plan aimed at resettling over 270,000 internally displaced persons, IDPs, back to their ancestral homes across all 34 local government areas of the state.

The initiative which was unveiled during a town hall meeting , also outlined strategic frameworks designed to restore dignity and provide sustainable support to thousands of families affected by insecurity, environmental disasters and communal violence.

The newly launched 45-page policy document also focused on the protection, assistance, and integration of displaced persons, in line with national protocols.

The State Action Plan emphasized the provision of essential infrastructures and services including housing, education, healthcare and livelihood support.

Dr. Abubakar Imam, representative from the Academic Laisson, Solid Project, while presenting a breakdown of the action plan, noted that Katsina currently has an estimated 270,000 IDPs displaced due to armed banditry, herder-farmer clashes, floods, and desertification.

Imam also revealed that 36,288 households have been directly impacted by these crises.

He said “Hotspot areas such as Batsari, Faskari, Kankara, Sabuwa, and Danmusa have borne the brunt of repeated attacks, leaving many families without access to basic needs such as education, healthcare, food security, and safe housing,”

‘’The plan includes the construction of 2,389 gender-sensitive housing units, 10 solar-powered primary health centres with WASH facilities, and 63 inclusive basic education schools’’.

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, represented by Deputy Governor Faruk Lawal, also reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to implement and fund the policy to ensure its long-term success.

We must tackle poverty to end insecurity, says Radda

Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has reiterated that poverty and unemployment remain the root causes of insurgency and rising criminality in Nigeria.

The Governor made this known while receiving a high-level delegation from the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), under the Office of the National Security Adviser, and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) at the Government House, Katsina.

The delegation was in the state to present the “Sustainable Rehabilitation and Reintegration Project for Improved Livelihood and National Security,” a joint initiative targeting conflict-affected communities.

The project, which already has a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) since May this year, aims to promote economic empowerment using climate-smart integrated agriculture.

Governor Radda emphasized that “Insurgency thrives where economic hardship exists. If we must win the insecurity war, we must combine kinetic and non-kinetic approaches — and that begins with tackling poverty.”

Radda reaffirms support for Local Govt Autonomy, stresses accountability on health, education, Agriculture

Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has reiterated his strong support for local government autonomy, while emphasizing the critical role of accountability and oversight in managing public resources.

Speaking during a live appearance on Sunrise Daily, Channels Television’s flagship morning show, Governor Radda also highlighted Katsina State’s strides in improving the standard of living through strategic interventions in healthcare, education, and agriculture

When asked about the ongoing debate on local government autonomy and whether governors are truly committed to decentralizing power, Governor Radda said he could not speak for other states but made it clear that Katsina’s experience supports full autonomy—if checks and balances are in place.

He said “I was once a local government chairman in this state for six years, I operated under autonomy and that period helped shape my political journey. I’m in full support of local government autonomy, but we must ensure mechanisms are in place to monitor how funds are used. Accountability is key.”

Radda lauds Tinubu over the passage of the new tax law

Governor Dikko Umar Radda of Katsina State has lauded President Bola Tinubu over the signing of the new tax bill into law, noting that while Northern Governors initially raised reservations, their concerns were rooted in protecting citizens, not in opposition to the Federal Government.

He said “What we saw during that process was a demonstration of unity and support for the Nigerian government, Our concern was always about the implication of any law on our people. Now that it has been signed with nationwide consensus, we expect this reform to support economic growth and improve living standards.”

He particularly highlighted the tax reliefs granted to small businesses under the new law, which he described as “a big win for the Nigerian economy.” Drawing from his experience as the former Director-General of SMEDAN (Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria), the Governor said he had long championed policies that would relieve the burden on MSMEs.

Bauchi gov warns officials against wasteful Abuja trips, shifts investment summit to October

The Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has cautioned state officials to cut down on frequent and unnecessary trips to Abuja, while reiterating the need to reduce the cost of governance.

Speaking during the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting held yesterday in Bauchi, the governor said the state’s financial situation demands prudence and focus.

“We have to minimise the cost of governance. Travelling to Abuja should be avoided unless it is absolutely necessary. We cannot afford it because we have not met our revenue generation targets,” he said.

Governor Mohammed expressed dissatisfaction with the state’s current budget performance, noting that many of the government’s fiscal goals remain unmet.

“Our performance is very poor. What we planned to do within the fiscal year has not been achieved, and it is not because we lack the capacity,” he stated.

The governor also announced a shift in the date of the State Investment Summit, initially scheduled for July, now postponed to October.

He said the change was necessary to allow for better participation from international partners and corporate stakeholders, many of whom will be on midyear break during the originally planned period.

“We had to move the summit based on expert advice. July is midyear, and many members of the diplomatic community and private sector are away on holiday. We want full participation, not a half-filled event,” he said.

This is as he urged the media to help publicize the new date for the benefit of invited guests and the general public.

Yobe PDP passes confidence vote in Damagum, NWC

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Yobe Chapter, has declared its loyalty to its Acting National Chairman, Alhaji Iliya Damagum, and the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.

This is contained in a communique issued by the state PDP Chairman, Sen. Umar El-Gash, at the end of the party’s expanded executive committee meetings held in Damaturu on Saturday.

He said the chapter fully aligned with the vision, policies and strategic direction of the party, and remained a committed partner in the collective effort to rescue and rebuild Nigeria.

He refuted claims that the chapter’s structures had collapsed into the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

“The party remains intact, focused, and loyal to its identity as a proud and enduring pillar of Nigeria’s democratic process.

“Any such speculation is the handiwork of political mischief makers aimed at sowing confusion and disunity within our ranks,” he said.

He charged members to show unity from the wards to the national level by promoting peace, inclusion, and collaboration.

He cautioned members of the party against indiscipline, saying discipline remained the bedrock of any organised political structure.

“The State Executive Committee, in consultation with local government chairmen, resolved to uphold party rules and discourage acts of indiscipline, anti-party behaviour and disloyalty.

“Mechanisms will be strengthened to ensure compliance with the party’s constitution and code of conduct,” he said.

  • Ex-Sokoto gov launches initiative to pursue north’s peace, development

Ex-Sokoto gov launches initiative to pursue north’s peace, development

Former Sokoto State governor, Alhaji Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, has flagged off the Arewa Cohesion for Peace, Unity and Development Initiative in Kaduna, calling for a collective front to tackle insecurity, disunity and chronic underdevelopment across Northern Nigeria.

The colourful event, which was held at the historic Arewa House, attracted traditional rulers, community leaders, youth groups and development advocates, all rallying behind a renewed push to restore harmony and accelerate growth in the region.

Bafarawa, who is also the chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Initiative, said the movement was borne out of deep reflection on north’s mounting challenges. He made it clear that it is strictly non-partisan, designed to provide a neutral platform for dialogue, social cohesion and sustainable development.

“Arewa is more than a geographical expression. It is a symbol of our identity, our history, and our collective destiny,” Bafarawa declared in his keynote address, aptly titled ‘Peace is Possible, Unity is Achievable and Development is Within Our Reach’.

He stressed that the initiative would never morph into a political party, assuring that its members remain free to pursue individual ambitions elsewhere, while the organisation stands ready to work with any leader genuinely committed to implementing its blueprint for Northern transformation.

“Our mission transcends partisan politics. We are ready to work with anyone who shares our commitment to transforming Arewa and Nigeria for the better,” he said.

Bafarawa lamented the wave of insecurity, poverty and youth restiveness that has kept the region in the news for the wrong reasons. He said now is the time for the north to reclaim its strength through purposeful collaboration.

In his remarks, the Director-General of the initiative, Dr. Abdullahi Idris, described the launch as a timely intervention. He noted that the future of Nigeria is tightly linked to the stability and prosperity of the North.

“This initiative seeks to rebuild trust, foster dialogue where there is silence, and create opportunities where there have been too few,” Idris said. He cautioned however that achieving these lofty goals will demand patience, coordination and a collective sense of ownership.

According to him, “This is not just another programme or policy document. It is a call to action. The north must come together, speak with one voice and chart a clear course for peace and meaningful development.”

The gathering also featured goodwill messages from community leaders and civil society groups, who hailed the initiative as a refreshing non-political platform to heal old wounds, deepen understanding and drive inclusive growth across Northern states.

The appointment was formally announced by the President of the Union, Sheikh Zulukainaini AbdulRahman Opolo at the University of Ilorin, Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

With the conferment, Mr Mustapha assumes the second-highest advisory position in the Union’s leadership structure, next only to the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, who holds the title of Permanent Life Patron.

Speaking at the event, held at the University of Ilorin, Mr Opolo described the Senator as a longstanding ally of the Union and a dependable figure in its continued growth and development.

“Senator Mustapha has consistently stood by us, regardless of who leads the Union. The Union President, accompanied by six of his predecessors, presented the formal letter of credence to the Senator. The letter, endorsed by the Emir of Ilorin, affirms the Union’s recognition of Mr Mustapha’s contributions to student welfare, education, and youth empowerment across the Ilorin Emirate.

Mr Mustapha, who holds the traditional title of Turaki of Ilorin, is widely acknowledged for his community-based interventions and youth-focused programmes throughout Kwara State. His elevation to the position of Grand Patron, observers say, is both a recognition of his consistent support and an affirmation of his influence among young people in the Emirate.

The IESU, as the umbrella body of all Ilorin Emirate students across tertiary institutions in Nigeria, plays a vital role in youth mobilisation, advocacy, and community development.

Senator Mustapha’s new role is expected to further strengthen the Union’s institutional capacity and deepen its engagement with political and traditional stakeholders in the state.

1,000 youths benefit from Jobberman career development training in Yola

More than 1,000 youths have benefitted from a one-day intensive career and business development training organised by Jobberman Nigeria in collaboration with the Mastercard Foundation in Yola, the capital of Adamawa State.

Targeted at young people aged 18 to 35, the training recorded active participation from nursing mothers, young women, and persons with disabilities, who made up about 75% of attendees. Many of them attended with the goal of improving their career prospects and unlocking new opportunities.

The initiative, part of the “Young Nigeria Works Programme” and themed “Your Career Compass: Gain Clarity in Work and Business,” was aimed at equipping youths in Adamawa—and across Nigeria—with practical tools for employment and entrepreneurship.

Participants were encouraged to explore opportunities in agriculture, hospitality, and other informal sectors, with a particular emphasis on empowering young women.

Country Director of Jobberman Nigeria, Olamide Adeyeye, highlighted the programme’s strong local impact, stressing the importance of building inclusive pathways for youth advancement in the region.

“The Career Clinic served as a platform for young job seekers and entrepreneurs, particularly those with 0 to 5 years of experience, to gain critical insights, develop their professional capacity, and receive personalised guidance,” he said.

He added, “What we’re doing here in Adamawa is part of a larger commitment to equip young Nigerians with what they need to succeed, right where they are. Through our partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, we are reshaping how young people access opportunity—in jobs, in business, and in mindset.”

The training covered essential areas including CV writing, interview preparation, entrepreneurial thinking, and business model development, equipping participants with tools to make informed career and business decisions.

In her keynote address, Mrs. Juliana Omale challenged attendees to adopt a growth mindset beyond mere survival.

“Clarity means more than knowing what you want. It is about positioning yourself where opportunity lives, whether that’s in your skills, your business idea, or how you show up to the world,” she stated.

The training received positive feedback from participants across different backgrounds. Hadiza Khalil, a nursing mother, expressed her gratitude: “I have gained valuable knowledge about how to improve my business without depending on others. As a single mother, with this awareness, I am confident that in the next few years, I will establish myself as a recognised brand in Nigeria.”

Adamuji Joseph, a physically challenged graduate, shared his renewed optimism: “Before today, I felt limited in what I could achieve, but with this training and awareness, I believe I can face any challenge. As a graduate, I will now apply for jobs using the right CV format, and I’m also considering starting my own small business as I have entrepreneurial aspirations.”

Alhassam Musa, a fresh university graduate who joined the entrepreneurship track, praised his experience with Jobberman’s programmes, while Miss Asete Ajayi, a secondary school graduate, noted: “Today is my first time attending such training. With this knowledge, I now think beyond just university education. I hope to use this knowledge to improve my mother’s business and develop my own entrepreneurial ideas to become an independent woman and help my siblings.”

During the breakout sessions, attendees benefited from one-on-one career counselling and CV reviews, providing participants with individualised guidance for their career development journey.

The training represents Jobberman Nigeria’s continued commitment to empowering young Nigerians with practical skills and knowledge necessary for success in today’s competitive job market and entrepreneurial landscape

  • Group promotes civic awareness, rule of law, voter participation in Northern Nigeria

Group promotes civic awareness, rule of law, voter participation in Northern Nigeria

A non-governmental organisation, Advocacy for Integrity and Rule of Law in Nigeria (Airlin), has launched a grassroots campaign across the 19 northern states to promote civic awareness, respect for the rule of law, and voter participation ahead of the next general elections.

Speaking during the inauguration of the Yobe State chapter of the organisation on Sunday, Airlin’s National Chairman, Muhammad Ibrahim Gamawa, said the initiative is aimed at “re-Nigerianising Nigerians” by instilling a deeper respect for national values, legal norms, and democratic responsibilities.

Gamawa said the campaign specifically targets citizens who abstained from voting in the last general election, which saw less than 40 percent voter turnout. His team, he explained, is engaging directly with this silent majority, visiting them in their homes to encourage active participation in the democratic process.

“We are going to those who didn’t vote, not just to ask them to vote, but to educate them on their rights, how to make informed decisions, and how to choose leaders based on ideology, not money,” he said.

As part of its broader mobilisation strategy, Airlin has appointed state and local government coordinators in all local government areas of Yobe State. The group aims to mobilise at least 10 million voters from its growing membership base in the next election cycle.

READ ALSO; Fed govt to conduct nationwide audit of skills centres

Airlin currently operates functional offices in 16 northern states, enabling it to maintain strong grassroots presence and sustain civic engagement efforts across the region.

“If you refuse to vote, you’re giving the bad eggs a chance to emerge,” Gamawa warned. “We’re telling people: don’t stay back. Come out and close the gap left during the last elections.”

He stressed that a key task for the newly inaugurated officials is to discourage vote-buying and reject financial inducement from politicians.

“Anyone who collected ₦1,000 or even ₦1 million two years ago already knows the money is gone. What is left is the broken promise and bad leadership,” he said. “We must now live by political ideology. Don’t give your vote for money, give it for policy, for vision, for something that aligns with your future.”

Gamawa emphasised that Airlin does not endorse political parties or candidates, but rather evaluates political manifestos and engages candidates with direct questions about their development plans.

“Our duty is to look beyond the noise and see who has a workable plan. We sit with these leaders and assess what they can deliver in the first 100 days. That is how we guide our members to vote consciously,” he explained.

Airlin’s core message centers on civic responsibility, respect for the rule of law, and citizen-led accountability. Gamawa underscored the importance of citizens taking the lead in safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic future.

“Let the rule of law live in our minds and in our actions,” he said. “It’s our job as citizens to keep Nigeria together, not just the job of the government.”

He concluded with a stern warning against vote trading, describing it as a betrayal of the nation.

“Collecting money from politicians for votes is the worst thing citizens can do to their country,” he declared.
