YouthHubAfrica trains 80 youth on agroecology in FCT

A non-governmental organisation, YouthHubAfrica has trained 80 youth in the Federal Capital Territory on agroecology.

The youth, who participated in the training, were selected from Waru, Dukpa, Bwari, Garki, New Jerusalem and Kabusa communities.

The participants were selected based on their access to farmland and willingness to engage in long-term agricultural ventures.

Executive Director, YouthHubAfrica, Rotimi Olawale, called for the adoption of agroecology as a sustainable approach to tackling Nigeria’s food insecurity, youth unemployment and rising inflation.

Olawale, at a policy and practice dialogue themed: “Strengthening the Network of Actors for the Promotion of Agroecology in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)” organised in collaboration with ActionAid, said the training focused on the cultivation of ugu (fluted pumpkin), and included support in the form of seedlings, farm demonstrations, market linkages, and ongoing extension services.

“We conducted hands-on practical sessions, guided them on the farm, and helped them connect their produce to markets. The results from the two batches have been encouraging,” he added.

He also highlighted the importance of peer learning, noting that participants are encouraged to mentor others in their communities.

He expressed optimism that with consistency and proper investment, youth-led agroecological businesses can thrive and help reduce poverty.

Olawale said the policy meeting was aimed at building collaboration among key stakeholders—including youth groups, women’s associations, policymakers, and government institutions—to promote agroecological practices in the FCT.

Programme Advisor, ActionAid Blessing Ifemenam, said the dialogue was part of the Strategic Partnership Agreement (SPA) project focused on strengthening agroecology networks across Nigeria.

She said: “This gathering is about reinforcing the network of actors promoting agroecology. Climate change is real, and industrial farming significantly impacts the environment.”

One of the participants, Mariam Ogwuche, said: “As an advocate for climate justice, I knew the harm synthetic fertilizers cause to the ecosystem. But this training taught me how to produce organic fertiliser using cow dung, cow urine, and other natural materials. I didn’t know it was possible until I did it myself,” she said.

Adamawa govt assures of fair play in Fufore chairmanship controversy

Media aides to Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State assured on Saturday that the matter of the substantive chairman for Fufore Local Government which arose after the chairman, Shuaibu Babas, died on the 23rd of last month, will be sorted out equitably.

The aides gave the assurance against insinuations that the Vice Chairman, Mrs Peace Audu might eventually not be pronounced as the substantive chairman because she is a woman and a Christian in an area that has an Emirate traditional leadership.

  • WaterAid demands more investment in sanitation

WaterAid demands more investment in sanitation

A non-governmental organisation, WaterAid Nigeria has called for increased investment and a stronger policy framework to address the growing challenges climate change poses to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector

Country Director, WaterAid Nigeria Evelyn Mere made the call during the second annual climate conference held in Abuja, with the theme: “Strengthening Policies and Investment for Climate-Resilient Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Services.”

Mere, who was represented by the Head of Policy, Advocacy and Communications, Kolawole Banwo stated that climate change was no longer a distant threat but a reality of many communities as impacts of flooding, drought and saline intrusion on access to water, sanitation, and hygiene services as well as public health,

The country director noted that climate change had impacted on communities in Borno, Bayelsa and Lagos states, among others in the past.

She said the theme for the conference was apt as policies are the underpinning frameworks upon which the planning of any form of effective responses to climate change can be built.

According to her, climate resilience in WASH is not just about building stronger infrastructure, but ensuring that services anticipate, respond to, cope with, recover from, and adapt to climate-related events, while ensuring universal and equitable access for all, including the most vulnerable, even in the face of uncertainty.

She added that this was the global standard the organisation was striving to align with.

Mere said the aim of the conference was to achieve a sector-wide shared understanding of climate resilience WASH systems across the service chain, as well as develop a concrete framework for inter-agency and multi-sectoral collaboration to effectively institutionalise WASH into climate change adaptation and mitigation plans, strategies and programmes.

The Country Director added that they also intend to open the conversation on how to unlock and access innovative funding and financing mechanisms that will ensure the actualisation of the outcome of the conference.

Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, Richard Philangwa noted that Nigeria remains among the ten most climate-vulnerable countries globally, exposed to a range of environmental hazards including coastal flooding, air pollution, and desertification.

He added that these challenges severely affect water availability, infrastructure integrity, and public health.

He said it was crucial that Nigeria aligned its policies and investments to meet the realities of climate change as their collective action will determine the sustainability and well-being of future generations.

  • Review of Natasha’s ‘apology’

    Review of Natasha’s ‘apology’

    By Gbenga Oshinowo

Suspended senator representing Kogi Central , Natasha Akpoti -Uduaghan decided to bring herself to sordid spotlight again by hurling into public space an asinine piece entitled “Satirical Apology Letter”.and addressed to Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio, GCON, President of the Nigerian Senate.

In the ill-advised and inelegant piece of insolence against the Nation and its institution, Natasha attempts to wax intellectual by introducing the concept of satire into the uncouth letter. It is obvious that she has almost no knowledge of the concept and its import.  Satire implies criticising people or ideas in a humorous way in order to make a political point. And so in this piece of absurdity , who is she criticising or which idea is her target of intention? The vile piece is nothing more than serialized lies and calculated deception.

The so-called apology letter is a burlesque, a parody and not a satire as she ignorantly claims. Burlesque is an absurd or comically exaggerated imitation of something especially in a literary or dramatic work. It is a device in communication which fits her skewed thinking in this circumstance. Unfortunately in her hysteria and swashbuckling, she does not pay attention to learning.

The above framework fits what Natasha has been doing these past few months. She has proven herself a poor drama queen who is very poor at interpreting scripts yet presents the public with absurd dramatic optics with the intent to manipulate them. Her works so far have remained bland and unconvincing despite her concerted efforts. Her theatrical outputs  are tasteless, insipid  and vacuous of any mental deposit.

It is sad that even though they credit her as being a lawyer, no action of hers reflects that any learning from that noble discipline. Her public conduct flies ethics and moral values in the face. So what type of lawyer is she ? Pity!

If she were a lawyer, she would have been familiar with the law of evidence. She would also have known that he who alleges must prove . But Natasha has continued to dish out random narratives that are far-fetched in evidence and even logic. Sometimes the storylines are so childish that people are forced to see her actions as that of an “agbaya”, a Yoruba usage  loosely referred to an old person who acts childishly with not much sense. And to know that this person was a member of the highest legislative body in the land until her suspension puts this nation on a questionable threshold in the leadership recruitment process.

In her letter  which is replete with pun, Natasha proves that she had  a chequered upbringing that was far from decent and the manifestations are what she is grappling with. Her petulant nature , her ease with fabrication of lies, the consistent introduction of  new  allegations like  “private dinner behind closed doors” and her  use of lewd puns like “erection” for “election” summarize her as debased and lacking in moral values.

In her over- bloated, ego she calls herself a stubborn woman. Is it a virtue?  Even though she is likely to claim that the stubbornness is about her strength of character,  she knows that she is economical with the truth if she nurses such an assumption. Her past records are  in clear  dissonance with such assumptions and so would not support such claims. And let no one talk about change or repentance. It is easy to spot those cut for repentance when one sees them. She does not bear any such value.

She signs off her inane letter with “Yours in eternal resistance”. Interesting. It is obvious that she is yielding to populism rather than sense and playing to the gallery. May I kindly remind her of an adage which submits that “a dog that is destined to get missing will never hear the hunter’s whistle”. Before she construes this as a threat to abduct her, this adage refers solely to her political career which she is railroading to destruction because of untamed conduct and  bloated ego.

The last lines, “Unafraid, Unbought, and Unbroken tell the story of a young woman who lives in delusional cravings and fabricates false  narratives as a habit to satiate whatever is hounding or haunting her.

  • Group condemns Natasha’s satirical apology, demands evidence on sexual harassment claim

Group condemns Natasha’s satirical apology, demands evidence on sexual harassment claim

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has come under fire following her satirical apology to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, which has sparked widespread criticism.

The embattled Kogi lawmaker, currently serving a suspension from the Senate over alleged unruly conduct, had earlier accused Akpabio of sexual harassment. However, on Monday, she issued what appeared to be an insincere apology to the Senate President, a move that quickly went viral on social media.

In response, the Executive Watchdog, a public accountability and governance advocacy group, condemned the senator in strong terms.

The group described her apology as “the latest descent into reckless, unsubstantiated allegations designed to undermine public institutions through media theatrics.”

In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Fidelis Ella, the group accused Akpoti-Uduaghan of “a calculated abuse of public trust, where serious criminal allegations are converted into tools of political spectacle rather than subjected to lawful investigation.”

“Rather than report her allegations of sexual harassment to law enforcement or seek judicial remedy, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan improperly routed her complaint to the Nigerian Senate — an institution without criminal jurisdiction — only to abandon due process and resort to a media blitz when her political stunt failed to gain traction,” Ella stated.

He noted that her latest outburst, couched in satire, follows a well-documented pattern of frivolous and reckless accusations, including the now infamous claim that Senate President Akpabio and former Governor Yahaya Bello plotted her assassination — a claim she later admitted was based on secondhand gossip relayed by unnamed third parties.

“Senator Natasha’s consistent preference for rumor over evidence, and media outrage over legal process, reveals a profound misunderstanding of the responsibilities of her office,” Ella said. “Her conduct diminishes the dignity of the Senate and betrays the trust placed in her by her constituents.”

Referencing her previous accusation against former presidential aide Reno Omokri — which she deleted without apology after Omokri proved he was out of Nigeria at the time — Ella remarked that Senator Natasha’s history of reckless claims calls into question her credibility and fitness for public office.

“At a time when Nigeria requires disciplined, fact-driven leadership, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan instead offers drama, innuendo, and political self-sabotage disguised as advocacy,” Ella stated. “Her satirical letter is not resistance; it is a confession of her disregard for evidence, institutions, and democratic responsibility.”

The Executive Watchdog stressed that public officeholders must lead by example and that public confidence in democracy cannot survive when elected officials treat truth and due process as disposable tools of political warfare.

The group reiterated its call for accountability in public discourse and vowed to continue championing responsible civic engagement based on integrity, evidence, and respect for constitutional order.

Army Chief frowns at operational disregard, poor standards among soldiers

The General Officer Commanding GOC 8 Division of the Nigeria Army, Major General GM Ajose, has decried the slack in the execution of military directives and failure to uphold standards amongst Soldiers

The GOC  expressed dismay over the persistent disregard for critical operational directives, citing poor management of troops’ welfare and lack of adherence to administrative checklists within the Division’s Area of Responsibility (AOR).

Delivering a keynote address at the opening of a two-day training conference for Commanding Officers COs, Operation Officers Ops, Adjutants ADJTs, and Administrative Officers ADs within the Division with the theme: “Enhancing staff Officers’ capabilities for operational efficiency,” aims to equip officers with the necessary knowledge to tackle evolving security and administrative challenges.

He said: ”The role of monitoring the implementation of directives lies not with the commander but with the most senior staff officer and his team.

”There is a longstanding directive on the quality management of troop rations, and despite repeated reminders, some locations under my command still serve substandard meals to personnel.

“It was personally shocking to observe that not only were troops subjected to poor quality meals but several locations were also completely unaware of the directives.”

He further highlighted non-compliance with the 8 Division’s checklist for administrative movements and patrols, describing it as “worrisome.

Ajose noted that such lapses undermine combat readiness and overall operational efficiency, reiterating the importance of the training conference in addressing these gaps.

He called on.all the participants to engage actively and avoid complacency during the sessions.

The Commander of 17 Brigade, Brigadier General B.O. Omopariola, described the conference as part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing professionalism and synergy across staff and operational functions within the Division.

  • Matawalle: Group warns against smear campaigns, fake news

Matawalle: Group warns against smear campaigns, fake news

The Guardians of One Nigeria (GON), a prominent sociocultural group with a wide network across the country, has issued a stern warning to what it described as “enemies of Nigeria” to stop politicising the country’s security challenges.

The group condemned the spread of false narratives aimed at undermining the government’s efforts to tackle insurgency and terrorism, stressing that no amount of propaganda, blackmail, or fake news could distract a focused President from his mission to restore peace and security.

GON’s reaction followed a wave of rumours that circulated on social media on Tuesday, alleging that President Bola Tinubu had relieved the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Abubakar Badaru; Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle; and the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, of their duties.

The claims, which were not carried by any credible media outlet, were reportedly linked to a fake statement attributed to the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

The statement falsely claimed the sack was due to the ministers’ failure to halt ongoing killings across the country.

Describing the reports as “fake news,” the GON, in a statement signed on Wednesday by its President, Arch. Darius Ishakwu, and Secretary General, Chief Nurudeen Isiaka, urged those behind the misinformation to desist immediately.

The group, which comprises retired security officers, paramilitary personnel, and professionals engaged in community security efforts, emphasized that Nigeria’s insecurity problem is longstanding and predates the current administration. It also praised the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, for his role in sustaining military pressure on insurgents, noting that his efforts have exceeded those of some of his predecessors.

“If the Defence Minister in the past administrations had done half of what Matawalle has done in less than 2 years, we would not have been here discussing insecurity in this tone. The dexterity with which the Chief of Defence Staff, General Chris Musa also faces the monstrous challenge of insecurity, is a testament that there is a great synergy amongst the Service Chiefs and the Defence Ministry.

“Just yesterday, when the enemies of Nigeria went out to plant the fake news online, the Honourable Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle and the CDS, General Musa, were in Borno State, to pay operational visit to those patriotic personnel at the Theater of War, to encourage them and possibly get first hand feedback from those who bear the brunt. The Governor of the state, Prof. Zulu was in hand to receive them and together, they were conducted round the troops’ camps.

“There are tactical means the current administration is devising in fighting insurgencies, banditry and terrorism. These are not fights you take to social media. These are not what anyone should play politics with. If anyone wishes President Tinubu well in his administration, such a person should suggest plausible ways to assist the existing security agencies and the Defence Chiefs, through intelligence gathering, community policing, homeland defence, neighborhood watch, and other possible means.

“This is what we stand for in Guardians of One Nigeria. We believe that security is not one man show. Government alone cannot do it. We need to rally round with great support. But, if anyone has nothing meaningfully to offer, such a fellow should better keep his mouth shut, rather than playing dirty politics at the expense of the lives of our people. The year 2027 would come and go, but Nigeria would still remain as one”, the statement added.

The group, speaking further, said it was on record that Matawalle was someone who has devoted his energy to visiting troops in the front line.

It said, “He (Matawalle) knows his onions and should not be distracted. We will continue to support him to achieve his aim of bringing insurgencies to standstill in Nigeria”.
