Alia working to deliver good governance to Benue people, says coalition

    Dismisses planned protests against gov

Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia is working to improve the welfare of Benue people, improve the economy, establish a culture of accountability and good governance, Coalition for Good Governance and Accountability has said.

It passed a vote of confidence in the Governor and warned those who have been paid to tarnish the hard earned image of the Governor to think twice before making a caricature of themselves.

The coalition rejected an alleged plot to disrupt the administration of governor Alia.

In a press release signed by Comrade Joseph Uyeh on behalf of the coalition, the group dismissed those desperately trying to undermine the developmental strides of Governor Alia, describing them as political failures and losers.

The statement said: “Despite the remarkable good works currently ongoing in Benue State, some persons who are supposedly stakeholders are aggrieved with the shift from the traditional money-sharing and political patronage that once characterised politics in the state and elsewhere.

“We have received credible intelligence to the effect that those who are opposed to the principled leadership of His Excellency which places the welfare of the people first above political patronage are not resting as they plot and scheme to cast his efforts in bad light.

Northern Youth Council dissociates self from planned nationwide protest

The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has announced its decision to disassociate itself from the planned “Take-It-Back” national protest, citing concerns over the potential for further unrest and the need to prioritise peace and unity.

In a statement by its president, Isah Abubakar, in Kaduna, the NYCN expressed its commitment to the empowerment and development of Nigerian youth but emphasised that the current situation required calm, dialogue, and patience rather than actions that could further destabilize the fragile peace.

The council said, “We are deeply concerned about the escalating tensions across various regions and the current socio-political climate.

“As an organisation committed to the empowerment and development of Nigerian youth, we understand the frustrations and aspirations of young Nigerians. However, we believe that, in light of the current situation, the nation requires calm, dialogue, and patience rather than actions that could further destabilize the fragile peace we are working hard to uphold,” the NYCN stated.

The NYCN recognised the legitimacy of the grievances that have led to calls for protest but emphasized that peace and national stability should remain the highest priorities.

The group further reflected on recent protests in the country, including the End Bad Governance protest, which was hijacked by hoodlums and miscreants, resulting in the loss of lives and property valued in millions of naira.

It said, “We urge our fellow young Nigerians to come together in solidarity, not through protests, but through peaceful and constructive engagements that foster lasting change.

“No one desires a repeat of such tragic events. We must unite as one force to advocate for our rights and work together to build a stronger, more inclusive Nigeria.”

The NYCN urged Nigerian youth to remain calm, avoid any form of violence, and continue engaging in peaceful and legitimate activities, allowing the government to address the pressing issues at hand.

“We urge Nigerian youth to remain calm, avoid any form of violence, and continue engaging in peaceful and legitimate activities. Let us work together to build a stronger, more inclusive Nigeria, where our rights are respected and our voices are heard,” the NYCN stated.

    Northern senators condemn Plateau attack

The Northern Senators Forum on Monday condemned the recent attacks and unfortunate loss of lives, and the destruction of property in Plateau State.

The forum, in a statement by its chairman, Senator Abdullaziz Yar’Adua, said the incident was a reminder of the insecurity plaguing some parts of the country.

The forum also expressed its commitment to working with the government and security agencies to develop a robust security framework that protects the lives and property of citizens.

The statement reads in part: “On behalf of the Northern Senators Forum, we hereby condemn in the strongest possible terms the recent attacks on five communities in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau state.

“The death toll, which has risen to about 50, with many more injured and missing, doesn’t represent the values we stand for as a nation.

  • Onjeh urges Benue indigenes to unite against insecurity

Onjeh urges Benue indigenes to unite against insecurity

Former All Progressives Congress (APC) Benue South senatorial candidate Comrade Daniel Onjeh has urged residents and indigenes to unite against rising insecurity and support Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration.

Emphasizing that insecurity thrives in division, Onjeh urged the people of Benue, especially the Idomas, to remain steadfast in their support for the Alia administration.

In a statement at the weekend, Onjeh expressed deep concern over the recent escalation of violent crimes, including kidnappings and killings, across Benue communities.

He described the attacks as well-coordinated operations involving both external criminal elements and local collaborators.

Onjeh, a former Chairman of the Governing Board of the Project Development Institute (PRODA) Enugu, cited what he described as the disturbing evidence of collusion between marauding herdsmen and unscrupulous elements within Benue communities.

“The testimony of a recent kidnapping victim reveals the chilling reality: ‘his abductors were a mix of Fulani herdsmen and Idoma youths who brazenly seized him from his home in front of his family,” he stated.

The APC stalwart pointed to the brutal murder of retired Immigration Comptroller Akatu Onche in Otukpo as particularly troubling.

“This respected community leader was killed shortly after courageously urging his people to defend themselves against insecurity. We must ask: why was he specifically targeted? Who betrayed him?” he questioned, suggesting the likelihood of informants within communities working with networks of criminal herdsmen.

He lamented the fact that despite the Idoma people accommodating herdsmen in their communities for decades, the herdsmen perpetrate heinous crimes against their kind host.

“We least expect this from them,” he stated. “It’s akin to welcoming a guest, providing shelter, and having them betray your hospitality by setting your house ablaze,” he stated.

He cautioned the people of Benue State not to rush to hasty conclusions and apportion blame without thoroughly studying the nature and dimensions of the security situation in the state.

“The issue is multidimensional and multifaceted. Though each community affected by this menace across the nation has its own peculiarities, there is a general trend. Some weeks ago in Manchok (Kaura LGA of Kaduna), two young men were arrested for conspiring with bandits to kidnap their kinsmen, a crime they confessed they committed. These collaborators and informants abound in many communities across the country. It happens in Benue as well,” Onjeh stated.

He warned against pointing the searchlight on only criminal herdsmen and allowing their local collaborators to remain in the anonymity of darkness.

Doing so, he warned, would embolden these miscreants to continue terrorizing their communities without fear of retribution.

“If full attention is given to local collaborators and efforts made to fish them out of the community, they will know society is aware of their treachery. This knowledge, and the fear that they will not be spared when they are caught, will drive them into retracing their steps, amending their evil ways, and becoming law-abiding members of their communities,” Onjeh said.

Further dissecting insecurity in Benue State, especially in Idoma land, Onjeh stated: “Now that these herdsmen know they can be easily identified when they mix with the community, it appears they have resorted to attacking through proxies. The pervasive poverty in the land enables them to easily entice local miscreants into becoming their informants for the promise of a cut of the ransom they would extort from the families of the people they kidnap.”

He urged the Idoma nation to rise up and speak against the evil that has befallen its land, warning that failure to do so could cause the fall of Otukpo, the sociopolitical nerve centre of Idoma land, which is currently targeted by criminal kidnappers.

He applauded Governor Alia’s tireless, behind-the-scenes work with federal security agencies and other stakeholders to dismantle criminal networks in the state, including marauding herdsmen and their local collaborators.

Onjeh, an advocate for good governance and an opinion leader who has consistently championed security and development issues in his state, urged Benue residents to enhance community vigilance, stating “Security begins with us. We must establish robust neighbourhood watch systems and promptly report suspicious activities.”

He implored the people of Benue to reject divisive politics. He also called all residents of Benue State to support the efforts of the Alia administration to bring peace and development to the state.

“Governor Alia needs the people’s backing to implement comprehensive security solutions. This is not the time for destructive criticism and ill-informed street protests that do more harm than good,” he said.

  • Wade into killings, unrest in Benue, group appeals to Tinubu

Wade into killings, unrest in Benue, group appeals to Tinubu

The Coalition for Good Governance and Transparency in Nigeria (CGGTN) has raised the alarm over what it described as politically motivated killings in Benue State, urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene urgently.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Sunday, the coalition’s leader, Comrade Igwe Ude-Umanta, decried the rising wave of violence in the state, particularly following the recent judgment of the Benue State Local Government Election Tribunal in favour of elected councillors from the seven LGAs in Benue North West Senatorial District.

The group, in partnership with the Advocates of Social Justice (ASJ), alleged that certain National Assembly members—described as “enemies of Benue State”—are behind the unrest.

They called on President Tinubu to act swiftly to neutralize what they termed “powers in Abuja backing civil unrest” in the state, lamenting that individuals elected to serve the people are instead allegedly fueling chaos for political gain.

“What will the people gain if they continue to loose their loved ones because you want a state of emergency declared in your own State. These rascals must be stopped. Do they think that Nigerians would fold their arms and watch these few elements pull down the Country?” they queried.

The group then called on the security agencies to immediately go after the serial killers in Benue state.

Expressing concern at the rising wave of killings in the state, the group alleged that street and campus cults are being used to perpetuate evil and in return blamed the crisis on the State Governo, accusing him of failing to provide security even when he does not have control over security apparatus in the state.

The group also accused some disgruntled persons in the State of being the mastermind of a plan to cause chaos and destabilised the state.

They claimed to have unearthed plans by these elements to mobilise more than 20,000 people for a protest march in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja in a bid to cause another chaos in the country.

According to Ude-Umanta, “We urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to watch his back as the people in question are around the government and they have access to funds and could do anything just to prove a point.

“Mr President sir, your enemies are within you but you shall overcome all animosity. They are people who have access to security and huge stolen funds that could be used against anyone or authority. Mr. President must know that his government is being attacked by the same people he appointed into sensitive positions, in the guise of getting at the Executive Governor of Benue State, the working governor.

“We know and they know, that the only thing they could do is to cause civil unrest and cause more death and hardship on Benue communities and Nigeria at large just to give the government a bad image. The Inspector General of Police must not take this information for granted as the days are near. The Police must be seen working just like the Honourable Chief Justice of Nigeria is working.”

  • Agatu youths blame criminal elements for pastoralist killing, cattle rustling in Benue

Agatu youths blame criminal elements for pastoralist killing, cattle rustling in Benue

The Agatu Youth Development Initiative (AYDI) has raised the alarm over what it described as a calculated effort by criminal elements to sabotage the fragile peace process in Agatu Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State following the recent killing of a herder and the rustling of over 210 cows.

The group condemned the attackers as enemies of Agatu, insisting they did not have the stainless and pure blood of Agatu running in their veins.

The group stressed that the violence was being orchestrated by crisis merchants who thrive on chaos and disruption, warning that if not urgently addressed, Agatu could relapse into the dark days of relentless killings and reprisals.

While commending the LGA Chairman, Hon. Melvin Ejeh, for his sustained peace efforts since assuming office, as well as the Fulani community for maintaining calm amid provocations, the group urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious individuals or activities to the appropriate authorities.

In a statement on Sunday, AYDI’s National President, Ngbede Edoh, and Woman Leader, Rose Onuminya, revealed that their investigations identified the perpetrators as sponsored criminal elements seeking to disrupt the peace Agatu has enjoyed since Hon. Ejeh assumed office in October 2024.

They emphasized that the peace process led by Ejeh was the product of extensive Town Hall engagements across Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, and Plateau States, which had produced tangible results.

“Our people undertook to be good hosts, hospitable and accommodating,” the group said, adding that “herders and settlers agreed to respect the laws, tradition, and custom of their host communities.”

In response to the latest attacks, AYDI urged locals to report suspicious persons and movements and avoid taking the law into their own hands.

It called on the residents to expose suspicious movements in the community and maintain vigilance against those attempting to incite violence.

“Beneficiaries of acts of wickedness and crimes are those that originate them,” the group warned, stressing the urgency of a collective stand against violence.

To the Fulani community affected by the violence, the group appealed for calm, assuring them that justice would be served through legitimate channels.

“We express implicit confidence in the leadership of the council chairman and security agencies to go all-out in getting justice,” the statement read.

AYDI also revealed that compensation had been paid for previous incidents involving grazing on farms, presenting this as evidence of the council’s commitment to peaceful coexistence.

The group commended the efforts of the Commander and troops of Operation Whirl Stroke, the DSS, police, and other security agencies for maintaining relative peace in Agatu, urging them to sustain the operational momentum against troublemakers.

The youth group encouraged the people of Agatu to support these security operatives with kind words and messages of goodwill, stating that such gestures would boost their morale while spurring them to double down on their aggressive disposition.

AYDI further advised the chairman to remain resolute, stating, “Evil thrives where good men either give up efforts or do nothing at all.”

It called on authorities to engage youths in peace-building forums and consider rehabilitation for those involved in violence, warning that without such interventions, “the ugly development could degenerate into a precarious situation.”

According to Hajiya Umma, Kaduna State Government has ‘’sustained the allocation of not less than 15% of the state financing to the health sector as prescribed by the Abuja declaration, a feat that is yet to be achieved at the federal level.’’

The Commissioner also reiterated that Governor Uba Sani has approved the recruitment of 1, 800 health workers yearly across all the PHCs in the state, for the next four years.

  • APWEN to expand opportunities for female engineers

APWEN to expand opportunities for female engineers

The Chairman, Association of Professional Women Engineers in Nigeria (APWEN), Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) Chapter, Engr. Adefunke Adekunle has promised to expand opportunities for young women in engineering.

Speaking in Abuja on Thursday during her inauguration as the second Chairman of the association, Adekunle assured that her administration would raise the number of female engineers in the country.

She noted that women constituted a very small percentage of the engineering workforce, with estimates suggesting that only around 5per cent of Nigerian engineers are women.

The APWEN Chairman said that her administration would focus on creating more opportunities for women in engineering, providing mentorship, and promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education for girls.

She said: “Engineering remains the backbone of national development. However, women in this field still face challenges that limit their representation and growth.

“As the second Chairman of APWEN NNPC Limited Chapter, my vision is clear: to deepen our impact, expand opportunities for young women in engineering, and foster an inclusive environment where female engineers can thrive.”

  • North-Central APC forum endorses Akume’s leadership, targets six million votes for Tinubu’s re-election

North-Central APC forum endorses Akume’s leadership, targets six million votes for Tinubu’s re-election

The North-Central All Progressives Congress (NC APC) Forum has officially adopted the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen. George Akume, as the party’s leader in the zone.

This came after a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja on Thursday, where party members reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the APC in the North Central geo-political zone and set a target of six million votes for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 reelection.

In a statement by the forum’s chairman, Saleh Zazzaga, while acknowledging Akume as the highest-ranking APC leader in the North-Central, the SGF was commended for promoting unity and inclusive leadership.

The Forum, through Zazzaga, a member of the APC campaign council for the 2023 elections, noted past concerns that Akume had prioritized his Tiv, Benue kinsmen while neglecting other regions in the North-Central.

However, the forum noted that Akume has since addressed the concerns, embracing all factions to solidify the party’s presence in the zone.

According to Zazzaga in the statement, the Forum acknowledged Akume’s efforts in uniting party stakeholders, emphasizing that a cohesive front is crucial for securing a strong performance in the 2027 elections.

“As the father of the party in the zone, Senator Akume has shown that he has a large heart by overlooking previous disagreements and embracing all stakeholders in the overall interest of the party.

“We urge all those who are yet to embrace Senator Akume’s leadership to do so, so that the North-Central APC can present a united front in the 2027 election,” the NC APC Forum stated.

While calling on all party members, including State governors, legislators, and grassroots leaders, to rally behind Akume for a stronger APC in the region, the Forum urged key party structures such as the North-Central APC Governors Forum, Senate and House Caucuses, and State party executives to align with Akume’s leadership to enhance electoral success.

“We understand that these units have been working seamlessly with the SGF, Senator George Akume.

“They should continue to work with the guidance of Senator George Akume, and continue to strategize to ensure that the APC presents a united front in 2027.

“Our goal is to win all elective positions in the zone in 2027 to show that in truth, the North-Central is for APC,” Zazzaga said.

The North-Central APC Forum reiterated its commitment to mobilizing support for Tinubu’s reelection, increasing its initial pledge of four million votes to six million.

“We believe that with all stakeholders working with Senator George Akume, the North-Central can produce six million votes for Mr. President in the next election,” the Forum declared.

Addressing the lingering power struggle between Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia and Akume over the APC structure in Benue, the Forum urged Alia to recognize Akume’s leadership and work collaboratively for the party’s progress.

“Governor Alia, like Senator Akume, is committed to APC’s success. We encourage him to embrace Akume’s leadership to foster harmony and strengthen the party,” Zazzaga said.

The Forum, however, emphasized the importance of unity while urging all party members to set aside personal interests for the collective good, noting, “As we approach 2027, internal divisions must be resolved.

“Only a united APC can achieve the resounding victory we seek. We advise that the hatchet should be buried for harmony and progress to thrive in the affairs of the party”.

  • Insecurity: Pro-democracy group urges Tinubu to declare state of emergency in Zamfara

Insecurity: Pro-democracy group urges Tinubu to declare state of emergency in Zamfara

The United Democratic Coalition (UDC) has called on President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in Zamfara, citing worsening insecurity and a breakdown of democratic order in the state.

The demand was contained in a statement on Friday signed by Abdulrahman Danladi, president of the coalition.

Danladi described Zamfara as “a state under siege,” accusing the state government of abandoning its constitutional duty to protect lives and uphold democratic principles.

“The situation in Zamfara has gone from troubling to terrifying. Armed groups operate freely, citizens are at the mercy of bandits, and yet those elected to speak up are being silenced,” the statement read.

He was referring to the recent suspension of 10 lawmakers in the Zamfara State House of Assembly, whom he said were punished for raising concerns about insecurity and illegal mining in their constituencies.

“What we are witnessing is not just lawlessness — it is executive tyranny. These lawmakers were elected by the people and have a duty to speak out. Instead of listening to them, the state assembly, clearly acting on orders, has shut them down,” Danladi said.

He likened the political tension in Zamfara to the recent situation in Rivers state, where Governor Siminalayi Fubara governed with just four lawmakers after a split in the house of assembly — a scenario that prompted calls for federal intervention.

“If Rivers with four lawmakers sparked talks of emergency rule, how is Zamfara with 10 suspended lawmakers and spiralling violence not a national concern?” Danladi asked.

“The same standard must apply. Democracy is being murdered in Zamfara in broad daylight. If the federal government could consider intervening in Rivers, it must not turn a blind eye to the breakdown in Zamfara.”

“We are calling for a six-month state of emergency in Zamfara to allow security forces take control, restore peace, and return the state to constitutional order.”

The group also demanded the immediate reinstatement of the suspended lawmakers and an investigation into what it called “executive interference” in the legislature.

“This is not the time for political correctness. It is the time for leadership. The people of Zamfara are under siege — both by bandits and by those who should be protecting them,” the statement added.

Zamfara, one of Nigeria’s most troubled states, continues to face persistent attacks from armed groups, with thousands displaced and dozens killed in the past year alone.
