NIPC pioneer status incentive attracts N386bn, grants tax holidays to 37 companies

The Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC) has revealed that its Pioneer Status Incentive (PSI) has attracted N386 billion in investments.

The incentive grants eligible companies a tax holiday of three to five years, exempting them from paying corporate income tax within that period.

This was disclosed by the Head of the Incentives Administration Unit, Mrs. Lovina Kayode, during a media parley in Abuja. She noted that the N386 billion was generated from 37 companies benefiting from the scheme.

She said: “The broader impact of the incentive has created significant job opportunities and contributed to reducing poverty. So far, through the pioneer status and through those 37 companies I mentioned earlier, we’ve been able to generate 5,559 jobs.

“NIPC had compiled a comprehensive guide to incentives in Nigeria, covering six key sectors, investment policies and protections, general tax-based incentives, sector-specific incentives, tariff-based incentives, export incentives, and special economic zones. These measures aim to simplify the investment process and encourage foreign and local investors”.

Surrender now or face wrath, CESJET warns Lakuruwa sect

…says CDS Musa has impressed human rights community

The Centre for Social Justice, Equity, and Transparency (CESJET) has issued a stern warning to the Lakuruwa sect, urging them to surrender immediately.

This call comes as the Nigerian military, led by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has launched a decisive crackdown on the terrorists.

According to Chief Isaac Ikpa, Executive Secretary of CESJET, the fleeing members of the sect should surrender early while there is still an opportunity for pardon.

He said continuing down the path of violence would only lead to their destruction, hence he advised them to turn a new leaf.

Ikpa warned the sect that General Musa and the troops mean business and his strategic deployment of a Special Operations Brigade to Sokoto and Kebbi States has yielded significant successes, with numerous terrorists killed, captured, or forced to flee.

“The Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency (CESJET) is calling on the Lakuruwa sect to surrender now and take advantage of the pardon offered. This call comes as the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, and the Nigerian military have taken decisive action against the sect,” the statement said.

“We urge the Lakuruwa sect to surrender early, while there is still an opportunity for pardon. Continuing down the path of violence will only lead to destruction and loss of life. We advise them to take advantage of the government’s offer and surrender now.

“However, we must warn the terrorists that General Musa and the troops mean business. The strategic deployment of a Special Operations Brigade to Sokoto and Kebbi States has yielded unprecedented successes, and the troops will not hesitate to take action against those who refuse to surrender.”

Applauding General Musa’s leadership in the fight against insurgency has been commendable, Ikpa noted that the CDS has demonstrated exceptional commitment to protecting innocent citizens and their properties.

He said his troops have shown remarkable professionalism in their operations and CESJET expects this momentum to continue.

“The CDS has shown unparalleled dedication to the safety and security of Nigeria. Under his guidance, the troops have made significant gains against the Lakuruwa sect, and bandits and we expect this momentum to continue,” the statement added.

“The numbers speak for themselves: numerous terrorists have been killed, many more have been captured, and their camps have been destroyed. The Lakuruwa sect is on the back foot, and it is only a matter of time before they are completely defeated.

“Once again, we caution the Lakuruwa sect that their actions will not be tolerated.  They must surrender now or face extinction. “

  • Group allays fears of North over tax reform bills

Group allays fears of North over tax reform bills

The Independent Media and Policy Initiative (IMPI) has allayed the fears of Northern leaders over the tax reform bills before the National Assembly.

A former Commissioner for Information in Adamawa State and a senior official of IMPI, Dr. Ahmed Sajo said the fears of northern governments were based on the very wrong notion of a northern Nigeria that does not want to support productive activities.

Sajo, who spoke at a press conference in Abuja, urged leaders of the region to begin to think about adding value to the products that are produced in the north.

He said: “VAT is about value addition. The north must agree that, as northerners and as northern governors and northern governments, there’s the need to add value to the products we have, even if they are just agricultural.

“Take a cow, for instance. It has multiple value chains. If a northern state government can establish a world-class abattoir that slaughter about a thousand cows a day and processes it into meat; do a channel through which the blood is assembled. That would be a very huge gain. Imagine the blood of a thousand cattle. If you process it, it can be used for so many other things. The bones are valuable. The horns are valuable. The hooves and the skin are valuable.

“A few years ago, there were factories in Maiduguri and Kano that produced shoes, bags, belts, and others, using animal skin. If they could only learn to begin to add value to the products we have, they would not even worry about VAT, or any other tax for that matter, because the north is rich.

“Nasarawa state has just established a Lithium processing factory. Kaduna is doing the same. So, the leaders should begin to think about adding value to the products that we produce in the north. They should begin to think about productive engagement, not what is going on.

“So, I don’t think there’s any need for us to begin to fear the tax reform bills that might alter VAT distribution patterns. It’s sad that some people keep saying the north is going to be cheated in the new tax system. But if you sit down and ask them to tell you the areas that the north will be cheated, they will not tell you.”

IMPI Chairman, Dr. Omoniyi Akinsiju said the group considered the actions of northern state governments as needless distraction away from the economically redeeming attributes of the tax bills.

He said: “These reforms, as coded in the bills, are built on three functional pillars of critical growth drivers which are revenue generation, enterprise development, and enhancement of citizens’ purchasing power.

“Indeed, this is the first time in the history of fiscal policy deployments in Nigeria that the fiscal authorities will combine these three attributions in the tax law. Before now, tax laws were primarily focused on revenue generation without any consideration for enterprise development and citizens’ economic enablement through facilitating aggregate demand.

“We are, however, not surprised by the furore generated over the proposed sharing formula for the proceeds of Value Added Tax (VAT) as contained in the bills, It is the typical expression of the hangover from the era of squabbling over who gets the lion’s share from revenue so generated when, indeed, all that is needed to be done is to innovate to create a symbiotic fiscal relationship between the state and the people in a win-win situation as captured in the bills.”

He called on his opponent to maintain the spirit of sportsmanship and join hands with the new administration to move the Council forward.

“We have gone round and we have made promises and I want to assure members of the NUJ that the promises are not just mere political promises but blueprints that we are determined to implement and we will try our best because our manifestos are anchored on the tripod of accountability, inclusive leadership, capacity building and welfare for members and we will try as much as possible to deliver these promises.

“For my supporters, it’s time for celebration and jubilation but for me at the hem of affairs, it’s time for me to roll off my sleeves and go to action. I have to try as much as possible because I just have a few days to deliver on these promises and I pray that God will help me in delivering this tasking assignment that is before me.
