Ondo 2020: Campaign attack an assassination attempt- Jegede

    Osagie Otabor, Akure

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Eyitayo Jegede, has described the clash between members of his party and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oba Akoko, Akoko South West local government as an assassination attempt in his life.

Jegede said 15 vehicles in his convoy were destroyed while some of his supporters sustained injuries.

He said the attempt was to weaken his campaigns.

Speaking at a press conference in Akure, Jegede said the attack and previous attacks were a manifestation of an earlier threat by a chieftain of the APC.

Jegede said he called Governor Akeredolu, who he said, expressed shock at the event, and promised to investigate the incident.

The PDP candidate said he got security approval to campaign in the Akoko area and no other political party was expected to be in that area.

According to him: “15 vehicles were destroyed. I reported this formally to the Police Commissioner. This is a clear case of an attempt on my life. I have not seen this desperation.

“You can see a long convoy of the Governor openly displaying arms. If anything happens to me the public knows who to hold responsible. I am not in this game because I am desperate but to free the people from pains and poverty.

“What happened today is a collective view of the entire APC structure. We are focused on winning the elections and we will do it peacefully. We will defend ourselves in this process. Being in government is not a license to kill people.

“This will not continue. We are focused. We will win this election. They want to instill fear so that we will not come out to campaign. We will not be afraid. When bullets are fired at individuals, that is clear attempted assassination.

“The Governor and I have spoken today. I believe he was busy. He told him he did not know what happened. He said he will call his boys to order. I told him we should meet to address this. He expressed shock about what happened.

“We halt the campaign to avoid further bloodshed. Nobody will want anything to happen to his wife and children. You see armed thugs in the Governor’s convoy, displaying weapons and shootings at political opponents.

“No person’s life should be at risk in this business. No person’s life should be wasted. We will display courage, we will continue to preach and we will defend ourselves.

“My prayer is that they will not turn this state to the street of blood. We will resist this and we will win the election.”

But the spokesman for the Akeredolu/Aiyedatiwa Campaign Organisation, Olabode Olatunde, said the continued and unprovoked attacks on APC by the PDP were condemnable.

Olabode said it was the hoodlums of Jegede that attacked the campaign convoy of Governor Akeredolu while they were on their way to Ikare-Akoko, in continuation of the local government rally.

He said: “In their crass display of madness and thuggery, the hoodlums set ablaze the branded campaign vehicle donated to the Akeredolu/Aiyedatiwa Campaign Organisation by Ambassador Sola Iji.

“While we are shocked and saddened by this attack, we are not too surprised, because the PDP has shown that it is not focusing on issues in its campaign for the election. They will rather deploy violence and falsehood to score cheap political points.

“We say this is despicable and we view it as a sign of desperation by opposition parties in the state, who can’t stand the popularity of the APC, as they have seen the handwriting of their imminent defeat in the coming election on the wall.

“This unfortunate act is not only condemnable but also deserves a serious reprimand. So, we call on security agencies to investigate this latest attack by the PDP against the APC and bring the perpetrators to justice.

“This must not be swept under the carpet, as it portends grave danger for the smooth conduct of the forthcoming Governorship election in the state.”

Ondo 2020: Akeredolu floors, Agboola, Jegede in mock poll

    By Osagie Otabor, Akure

Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Ondo State, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, has defeated both candidates of the People’s Democratic Party and Zenith Labour Party, Eyitayo Jegede and Agboola Ajayi, respectively at a mock election organised by the Coalition 2020.

The Coalition 2020 is made up of 26 political parties, ethnic groups, trade unions, youths groups, women amongst others.

Akeredolu scored 162 votes, Agboola emerged first runner up with 89 votes, Jegede polled 67 votes while the Prince Dapo Adelegan of the ADC had six votes.

Over 400 delegates participated in the mock election.

There was a mild drama when some members attempted to disrupt votes counting and attempted to destroy the ballot box.

Security at the venue however restored normalcy counting continued.

Speaking after announcing the result, Chairman of the Coalition 2020 and former Senior Special Assistant on Political Matters to former Governor Olusegun Mimiko, Mr. Akin Akinbobola, said any party that win the mock election would win the October 10 governorship polls.

Akinbobola announced adoption of APC and Governor Akeredolu as the candidate and party the Coalition would support and vote for in the governorship election.

He said members of the Coalition 2020 changed their mind about their quest to stop Akeredolu’s second term bid after meeting and listening to him.

His words, “The outcome is a reflection of the thinking of Ondo State people. There must be complaints but majority of the people have spoken

“This Coalition has adopted the APC as our party that we will support. We will work to ensure APC candidate emerge winner of the October 10 governorship election.”

State Chairman of the APC, Engr. Ade Adetimehin, said it was the first time a Coalition of various groups and political parties would be adopting a single candidate.

Engr. Adetimehin urged losers to embrace peace and denied bribing delegates to vote for the APC.

Ondo 2020: Akeredolu, Deputy bicker over campaign venue

    By Osagie Otabor, Akure

Ondo State Deputy Governor and governorship candidate of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Agboola Ajayi, has accused Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of denying him access to the MKO Abiola Democracy Park for the use of his campaign flag-off.

It was the venue used by the PDP to flag off its rallies last Saturday.

Agboola who spoke through his Media Adviser, Allen Sowore, said he was drawing attention of the public to what he termed growing intolerance and undemocratic temperament of Governor Akeredolu towards the ZLP.

Agboola explained that the ZLP applied for the usage of the Democracy Park to flag off its campaign rally and after completion of all due processes, the fee was hiked from N5m to N11m.

He said the PDP paid N5m to use the venue for its rally last Saturday.

The Deputy Governor said the ZLP was prepared to pay the N11m as charged but the official in charge disappeared and it became clear that Governor Akeredolu was out to frustrate the ZLP

According to him, “This is a condemnable act. It is disheartening that Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria can preside over a government that would deny the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) the use of any public facility especially the Democracy Park built under the visionary leadership of Dr Olusegun Mimiko, who is the national leader of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

“We therefore call on the elder statesmen, religious leaders, lovers of democracy and all discerning minds to advise Mr. Governor to tow the path of honour and desist from undemocratic and perfidious acts.

“Ondo State belongs to all of us and nobody should use the mere privilege of leadership to ruin our prestige as the state of courageous and enlightened people.”

But Governor Akeredolu, who spoke through the Ondo Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Donald Ojogo, said the futile attempt to drag him into arena of frustrations suffered by the ZLP was unacceptable.

Akeredolu said the Democracy Park was no longer under the control of the State Government saying it was a consultant that now manages the facility.

“The recourse to blackmail is a deliberate blackmail venture aimed diverting the attention of the people from proper public scrutiny of those who have chosen to throw their hats in the ring.

“The most illogical stunt is when the ZLP candidate alluded to a puerile allegation that an officer ran away even when the sum of N11 m was to be paid. Perhaps, that was very ridiculous because it means such official must have deliberately allowed such huge sum to elude him,”
    Ojogo said.

It was gathered that the ZLP flag off has been shifted to hold on Saturday, 19 at Ore, headquarters of Odigbo local Government area of the state.

    From Osagie Otabor, Akure

Ondo Police Command has said the fire outbreak at the Akure office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was caused by faulty electrical connection.

It said talks of saboteurs causing the fire were untrue.

Over 5,000 card readers to be used for the October 10 governorship election were razed in the inferno.

The card readers were kept in two containers on the premises of INEC.

Some parties had called for investigation into the incident, to arrest the perpetrators.

Police Commissioner Salami Bolaji said at a news briefing in Akure that the Ondo Fire Service report on the incident had put to rest issues of saboteurs setting containers ablaze.

He said other findings would be made public.

Salami said: “The result of investigation into the incident is out. The fire was caused by faulty electrical connection and the smart card readers were burnt. They were kept in two containers on the premises of INEC and the air conditioners were kept on for 24 hours.

“This will put to rest speculations that the fire was caused by saboteurs. If there are other findings, we will let you know. For now, the major cause is faulty electrical connection.

“This report is final from the fire service. They have the authority to investigate fire incidents in Akure.”

On the reported destruction of campaign posters and banners by political opponents, he said his men were working to arrest the perpetrators.

“We are working hard to curtail political violence. We are meeting political leaders to tell their followers to desist from attacking each other. We are investigating all aspects about the killing in Idanre.”

Ondo 2020: Candidates demand probe of INEC fire

    By Osagie Otabor, Akure

All the three leading candidates in next month’s governorship election have demanded an investigation of Thursday night’s fire at the Akure, Ondo State secretariat of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Five thousand one hundred and forty-one (5,141) voter cards were reckoned to have been burnt in the fire, the cause of which INEC said yesterday it was yet to determine.

But it said the incident would not stop the October 10 polls.

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu who is seeking a second term on the ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Eyitayo Jegede of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Mr. Agboola Ajayi of Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) all asked the authorities to unravel the cause of the fire.

They were joined in the call for probe by the Young Progressives Party and the African Democratic Congress.

Akeredolu, on an on-the-spot assessment visit to the INEC office, described the incident as unfortunate and shocking.

Officials of the commission told him that there was no cause for fear over the October date fixed for the election.

To this, the governor said: “As you promised us that by the grace of God the election will still be held on that day, that is soothing. But it will come at a cost to INEC for it to replace all those card readers in due time.

“We sympathise with you and we want INEC to know that the people of this state are really concerned and are with you at this point in time in this calamitous situation.

“We are with you and whatever you think we can do that will not be termed as being partisan, because whatever we do now could be misinterpreted since we are in an election period, but no doubt we have to come as government and not as contestants.

“I can see the determination from how you spoke that the election will still hold on the 10th of October. We are so sorry about this.”

I suspect foul play — Jegede

Candidate Eyitayo Jegede of the PDP smelled foul play in the fire incident, saying “our fate is in the hands of God.”

In a statement he issued through Samuel Fasua, the Head, Media Research of his campaign organisation, Jegede said: “We smell a rat in all of this, knowing that the next scene in what looks like a drama of the absurd may lead to steps that can tinker with the authentic INEC voters’ list, with yesterday’s fire incident as alibi.”

He asked the National Chairman of INEC, Mr Mahmood Yakubu, to “as the ultimate umpire in the electoral body, order a thorough probe of the suspicious fire incident and bring its perpetrators to book.”

Besides, he told INEC to ”cause the authentic voters’ lists for the state, as respectively available in all the INEC local council offices and at the national headquarters in Abuja, to be publicly displayed.”

He also implored the police and other security agencies to “rise up to the test of integrity thrown up by the INEC fire incident and conduct sweeping investigations to unveil likely perpetrators of the act, and their sponsors.”

Ajayi: why did fire occur in card readers’ container?

Deputy Governor Agboola Ajayi, who is contesting the election on the platform of ZLP, wondered why the fire occurred in the store that houses voter cards, of all places.

“Why did the fire target the store where card readers meant for the election were kept?” he asked in his reaction yesterday.

His Chief Press Secretary, Babatope Okeowo, said: “The fire incident coming barely four weeks before the governorship election fixed for October 10, 2020 should worry every responsible and reasonable citizen of Ondo State.

“The Deputy Governor calls for the investigation of the fire incident to bring those culpable to face the wrath of the law.

“The law enforcement agencies should ask if the intention of those responsible for the inferno is to seek the postponement of the election or the cancellation of the use of card readers for accreditation.

”The people of Ondo State are waiting patiently for the outcome of the investigation, as they will not tolerate any ploy by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to subvert the wish of the electorate.”

Candidate of the YPP, Comrade Dotun Ojon, claimed that professional politicians were out to destabilise the electioneering process in order to continue their reign.

He said the inability of the fire service men to put out the fire showed failure of the present administration at both state and national levels in basic but sensitive and strategic areas.

Governorship candidate of the ADC, Mr. Dapo Adelegan, who visited INEC office, said it was not in the character of Ondo people to set public property on fire.

He said the people believe in the use of their democratic rights to change bad governance.

The ADC candidate urged the Ondo REC to boost security around the premises and election materials.

    APC shocked by incident

The All Progressives Congress (APC) said it was equally shocked at the incident, coming a few weeks to the governorship election.

Publicity Secretary of the party in the state, Alex Kalejaye, said: “Although fire incident could happen at any time, the party is more concerned that the unfortunate occurrence happened a few weeks to the gubernatorial election.

“While the party declines to join the pontificating wagon to condemn and apportion blame on the unfortunate development, we believe strongly that the gravity of what has happened demands prompt action from the security agencies to immediately unravel what actually transpired, to forestall a reoccurrence.

“The chapter also calls on the national headquarters of INEC to do all it could to ensure the incident does not result in setbacks in its preparation for the governorship election in October.”

We don’t know cause of fire yet, says INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said it was yet to uncover the cause of the fire incident that razed two containers in which 5,141 card readers were kept in its office in Akure.

It said the incident would not affect the conduct of the October 10 governorship election.

The electoral body pledged that the governorship election would not be postponed.

Ondo Resident Electoral Commissioner, Rufus Akeju, denied that the fire incident was part of a script by the commission and a political party to rig the election.

He dismissed the allegation as baseless and unfortunate.

He said the fire broke out “between 7.15 pm and 7.30 pm when most of the commission’s staff had gone home.

“The fire incident actually affected the Smart Card Readers Store. In all, 5,141 card readers that were inside the metal compartment (store) when the fire erupted were completely destroyed,” he said.

Akeju said necessary arrangements had been put in place to replace the burnt card readers.

He assured the people of the state that the fire “will not affect the conduct of the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Ondo State in any form, neither will it lead to the postponement of the election.”

He said relevant security agencies had “commenced investigation and you will be further briefed as events unfold.”

He praised fire fighters for stopping the inferno from spreading to other parts of the premises.

The Ondo REC said the commission had begun distribution of non-sensitive materials as well as commenced specialised training for security agents to enable them focus on the job on election day.

The Agbaka of Alagbaka, Prince Afolabi Obasuyi, who was present as the fire raged, said it would have been quenched within 30 minutes if the fire fighters were well prepared.

He said: “I was personally there. As the traditional head of Alagbaka community, it is my commitment to the people of this community to see that things are okay.

“I went there with my staff. To my dismay, nothing was done to quench the fire after two hours.

“Fire service men tried to put out the fire using buckets of water. I alerted the state government and the airport fire fighters. I also called the fire fighters at Ilesha.

”If it were in the Western world, it wouldn’t have been the same. The fire should have been quenched within 30 minutes.

“My advice is that every community should have their own fire station. Every institution should have a mini fire post.

“The state fire fighters should be combat ready. If we had good firemen, the fire should have been tackled. It was just a container.”

Burnt Card Readers won’t affect Ondo election, INEC assures

    By Okodili Ndidi, Abuja

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has assured the Ondo State governorship poll will still go ahead as slated, despite the fire incident that burnt the Card Readers meant for the October 10 election.

INEC National Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said that the 5100 Card Readers programmed for use for the election were razed in the inferno that broke out on Thursday night.

He said that investigation is on to unravel the cause of the fire.

The INEC Chair made the disclosure during an interactive session with stakeholders and Civil Society Organizations, convened by the National Peace Committee.

According to him,”we received the sad news last night of fire incident involving the container housing the Smart Card Readers. Let me give you a little bit of statistics, we require 4100 Smart Card Readers for the Ondo election and additional 100 for training, so that the adhoc Staff are properly trained using the Smart Card Reader. So we got 1000 Card Readers from our office in Osun State.

“So we had 5100 Smart Card Readers good to go for the Ondo election but unfortunately from the reports am getting, we lost the 5100 Smart Card Readers in that container.

“Will that affect the election? I am glad to say that we have recovered from that and election in Ondo is going to go ahead, we have huge capacity in the neighbouring state to get additional Smart Card Readers and I had a discussion with the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Oyo State and we have 700 Smart Card Readers there, so getting 5000 Smart Card Readers to support Ondo won’t be an issue at all. This is not a general election that is holding nationwide, it is an off season election.

“We have recovered in Ondo, while investigation continues in the cause of the fire. The Ondo election will not be affected by what happened to the Smart Card Readers. The fire only affected the container housing the Smart Card Readers. It was the same container that was used in 2015, 2016 and 2019, so it is not that we moved the Smart Card Readers to an unsafe place.

“But learning from what happened in Ondo, we are also taking measures to ensure that there is no repeat of this kind of incident in Edo State.”

Meanwhile on whether the Edo State governorship election will still hold as scheduled, Yakubu, assured that the Commission is ready for the poll.

In his words, “yes in September 2016, the Edo governorship election for reasons known to Nigerians was postponed for two weeks but it had nothing to do with the preparation of the Commission.

“We know advice came for the postponment of the lection. Is it going to happen again, not as far as INEC preparations are concerned. We are ready and good to go. INEC is not contemplating postponment of the election”.

The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, represented by Leke Oyebode, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Research and Documentation and in charge of Edo election, said that Police officers deployed for the election will be guided by the Police Code of Conduct.

According to him, “the Inspector General of Police has advised the officers and men deployed for the special assignment to abide by the Nigerian Police Code of Conduct. The Nigerian Police Force has a well articulated Code of Conduct to ensure that Police Officers do the needful during their assignment at the election duties”.

He assured that the Police is ready to ensure a peaceful election, adding that “nobody can stand on the way of this election”.

Bishop of Sokoto Diocese and member of the National Peace Committee, Hassan Kukah, said the meeting was convened by the Chairman of the National Peace Committee and former Head of State, Abdulsalam Abubakar, to encourage the various agencies, especially INEC and to help inspire confidence.

He said, “you have been adequately briefed on the level of preparedness the rest is for us Nigerians to do the thing we do best, which is to pray and then we also hope that the people of Edo State will enjoy a very peaceful election, the rest we leave into the hands of God.”

Ondo INEC fire incident is plot to rig, say PDP, Jegede

    By Osagie Otabor, Akure

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State and its governorship candidate, Eyitayo Jegede, have said that Thursday’s night fire incident at the Akure office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was a plot to rig the October 10 governorship election.

It said foul play could not be ruled out in the incident.

A press statement by state Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr. Kennedy Peretei, said the fire incident that burnt over 5000 card readers was disappointing.

Peretei cautioned that Ondo State people would not be taken for granted by the electoral body to resort to the use of manual device, as against the use of electronic card readers for the governorship polls.

According to the statement, “Indeed, we suspect collusion between some unscrupulous officials of the commission with some politicians to perfect the running plans to rig the October 10 governorship election.

“We do not want any politician, because of selfish political ambition, to take us back to the dark days of the 1983 political crisis that engulfed the old Ondo State.

“We are thus appealing to Eminent Nigerians, the civil rights community and other international bodies to wade in, and help prevent any move to subvert the will of the people in the coming Ondo governorship election.”

The PDP candidate called on the Nigeria Police and other security agencies to rise up to the test of integrity thrown up by the INEC fire incident and conduct sweeping investigations

According to the statement, “For a while now, our main rival in this race has been in the eye of the storm over accusation that it was using loan assistance decoy to collect the pin codes in the Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) of drivers, artisans and other professionals across the state.

“Telephone SMS was sent to them through the Ondo State Entrepreneurship Agency, that they should submit the code numbers on their PVCs latest September 2, 2020; that the state government wanted to grant them loans to boost their businesses.

“Here were loans that our people did not get for three and half years that the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration has been in power; but now, the party is trying to use a loan offer as decoy to pervert the inalienable right of the people to elect the candidate of their choice.

“Now, shortly after the collection of innocent people’s PVCs through the backdoor, came the shocking news that the INEC office had been raised by fire and that over 5000 card readers had been burnt.

“We smell a rat in all of this, knowing that the next scene in what looks like a drama of the absurd may lead to steps that can tinker with the authentic INEC voters’ list, with yesterday’s fire incident as alibi.”

Spokesman for the All Progressives Congress in Ondo State, Alex Kalejaiye, said the party was taken aback over the INEC fire incident.

Kalejaiye in a press statement said the party was concerned that the incident occurred few weeks to the gubernatorial election.

“While the party declines to join the pontificating wagon to condemn and apportion blame on the unfortunate development, we believe strongly that the gravity of what has happened demands prompt action from the security agencies to immediately unravel what actually transpired, to forestall a recurrence.

“The chapter also calls on the national headquarters of INEC to do all it could to ensure the incident does not result in setbacks in its preparation for the governorship election in October.”

But Ondo Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Rufus Akeju, said the allegations were untrue.

Akeju stated that there was no basis to accused the electoral of using the fire to rig and queried whether the accusers knew what the card readers are used for.

“If it were in the Western world, it wouldn’t have been the same. The fire should have been quenched within 30 minutes. My advice is that every community should have their own fire station. Every institution should have a mini fire post. The state fire fighters should be combat ready. If we had good firemen, the fire should have been tackled. It was just a container.”
