Ondo decides: NSCDC foils attempt to snatch ballot in Akure

The operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have foiled an attempt to snatch a ballot box in the ongoing  gubernatorial elections in Ondo State.

The Nation gathered that there was an attempt to snatch a ballot at Unit 17, Ward 9, Fadeyi Street, Oshinle, Akure.

The hoodlums had carried the box and were already heading out but they were stopped by operatives of the Civil Defence, who promptly called in soldiers.

No arrest was made, as the hoodlums dumped the ballot box and took to their heels.

The vote was eventually counted and PDP won with 75 votes, followed by the APC which got 66 votes. AD got 23 votes.

In Akure generally, so far, it looks like a straight fight between the PDP and the APC.

  • Ondo decides: Card reader displays “voting after election”

Some residents of the Alagbon community in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, on Saturday, complained that the card reader was displaying “voting after election” during the election.

Mr Isiah Adewole, a community leader at St Louis Ward 2, Unit 22, said he was the first to be accredited but to his surprise, the card reader was displaying, “voting after election.”

Adewole said that he had to cry out because he believed that with that display, the vote cast was a waste of time.

“I came to vote around 8 a.m. and when I voted, the card was displaying I was voting after election,” he said.

Esau Edawole, also a community leader in the area, said he got to the polling unit, the Presiding Officer (PO) told him that the machine was malfunctioning.

Edawole said the PO had to call her superiors to replace the machine and the one they brought was still
malfunctioning and voting could not start as at 11:00am at the unit.

Mr Wole Ogunyemi, the Chairman, Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC) also confirmed the claims of the community leaders.

However, all efforts made by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) to speak with officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) failed, as none of them could be contacted in the riverine area.

Ondo decides: Card reader rejects Mimiko’s thumbprint

There was mild drama on Saturday in Ondo town as the card reader deployed for the governorship election rejected Gov. Olusegun Mimiko’s thumbprint when he wanted to vote at his Ward 7, Unit 20 Polling Unit in Ondo West Local Government Area.

Mimiko had to fill the incident form before he was finally allowed to cast his vote at about 12 noon.

Speaking shortly after casting his vote, the governor said he would resist any attempt to manipulate the election in favour of any political party.

“Ondo people will not allow any form of rigging or manipulation through the card reader or any other form,” he said.

No fewer than 1,280,580 voters with Permanent Voter Cards would decide who the governor would be out of the 28 contestants in Saturday’s governorship election.

Although 1,659,186 voters were registered for the election, 378,606 did not turn up to collect their PVCs.

The major contestants include Mr Eyitayo Jegede of the PDP, Chief Rotimi Akeredolu of the APC, Dr Olu Agunloye of the Social Democratic Party and Olusola Oke of the Alliance for Democracy.

Ondo decides: AD accuses APC, PDP of manipulating polls

The Alliance for Democracy (AD) in Ondo State on Saturday alleged that both the All Peoples Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) made good their threats to rig and win this election at all cost by embarking spate of intimidation, heavy monetization and outright manipulation of the ballot materials in the on-going election in the State.

The spokesperson of the Olusola Oke campaign Organization, Mr Bisi Kolawole in a statement disclosed that it was unfortunate that the APC, whose mantra of a complete change to a corruption-free Nigeria was now the very apostle of corruption, intimidation and outright manipulation of votes by heavily monetizing the voting processes in the election.

His words: “They have threatened to win this election at all cost and they have demonstrated the willingness to make their prediction come true. Our leaders were brutalised and hounded out of their homes in order to scare them and their supporters from the polling booths, they have brought in loads and loads of money to buy votes due to the pangs of hunger which they brought unto the people.

“Yet, they say they are fighting corruption. Again, the PDP too have been attacking us including our Candidate, Chief Olusola Oke, they are now buying votes in the full glare of all shamelessly to continue pillaging the State.

“From all over the State reports have it that cases of electoral manipulations are on-going, the PVC cards readers are not functioning properly and appears to have been compromised as they show figures different what are usually recorded in the accreditation exercise.

“In Kiribi town Ese Odo local government, the hometown of the APC Deputy governor candidate, Mr Agboola Ajayi, leaders and members of the AD were chased out of their home to prevent them from voting and scaring their supporters away. Indeed, a former caretaker Chairman of the local government and also native of Kiribo, Mr Akin Sowore narrowly escaped being arrested by armed men in police and army uniforms who stormed his home in the community at exactly 1;30 am and up till the end of the election, these security men were harassing the electorate and chasing them from the polling units

“In Supare, in Akoko South West local government which is the hometown of Mr Victor Olabintan, the Director General of the Rotimi Akeredolu Campaign Organisation, thugs loyal to him prevented members and supporters of the AD and other parties from voting in Unit 6, Ward 10, where he usually votes. They completely surrounded the polling booth ensuring that nobody voted for another party save APC aside chasing away all known AD members.

“In Akure, specifically Ward 5, Units 17 and 18 situated inside the Alagbaka Primary School, the Special Assistant to Governor Mimiko, Mrs Taye Afilaka, was initially arrested by the police and taken away for electoral infractions only to resurface about two hours later with money which they started sharing out in the full glare of security agents to anybody willing to vote for the PDP. In Unit 23, Ward 10, Akure South local government area, the State Chairman of the Okada riders association, one Ojo Obabi led his thugs in thump-printing  ballot papers with the aim of swapping them with those from the polling units later.”

The AD, while commending the resolve of the people to vote for it candidate, Chief Olusola Oke, urged them remain calm and not to be intimidated by those which it described as men of straws saying that in the end, the will of the people would prevail.

    Senator commends conduct of election

The Senator representing Ondo Central in the Senate, Tayo Alasoadura has commended the orderliness and smooth conduct of the election so far, saying it is a sign that Nigeria’s democracy has evolved.

He said the way voters are conducting themselves without rancour is gratifying.
On why INEC officials are sitting idle about 12.45 pm, when there are long queues of voters in other nearby villages, Alasoadura said  it could be due to the number of people that registered.
Unlike the villages before it, there appears to voter apathy in most of the polling units in Iju, Akure North, the constituency of Senator Alasoadura.

Polling officials were observed sitting idle in most of the polling units there.

  • High turn out in Akure North

There seems to be a high turnout of voters in the rural areas of Akure North. The Nation has visited 10 polling units in the local government so far; there are long queues of people, patiently waiting to cast their ballot.

The inability of card readers to read the fingerprints of elderly voters noticed elsewhere in Akure South persists. Officials say no cause for alarm because everyone will eventually vote.
