  • Five money mistakes most people make

Five money mistakes most people make

    Chinyere Okoroafor

There are various money mistakes people make that constitute a major barrier in becoming financially successful before retirement comes knocking.

The road to financial freedom is not for the faint of heart or feeble-minded. You need to make smart decisions if you want to achieve your goals in the long run.

Let us look at some money mistakes people (especially those who have just left school and started out in their careers) make. These constitute a major barrier in becoming financially successful before retirement comes knocking.

Failure to start saving for retirement on time

Most young people wait too long to start saving for their retirement. They keep waiting for the right time. But the right time should be now. If you find that you are unable to set apart a portion of your income without going right back to dip into it, don’t waste a minute to start identifying your bad spending habits and eliminating them.

Planning for retirement is a life-long endeavour. Think of it as a marathon. To arrive at your destination faster, you have to start on time and maintain a steady pace.

Try putting at least 15% of your total income each year into a savings account. So if you earn N100, 000 a month, you should have at least N180, 000 saved up each year for your retirement.

Note that your retirement savings should be separate from your investment and emergency savings.

Here’s what you need to know:

In your 20s, you should have 1x your annual earnings saved up for retirement.

In your 30s, 3x your annual earnings

In your 40s, 6x your annual earnings

In your 50s, 8x your annual earnings

At 60, you should have 10x your annual earnings as your retirement savings.

If you feel you don’t make enough money to be able to save successfully, know that it’s a myth. There’s no such thing. If you are finding it difficult, all you have to do is adjust your habits so you can spend less than you make. There is always a way to cut back on your spending. But if you’ve tried it all without much improvement, setting aside as little as N4, 000 a month is still progress.

Spending at the same rate you earn

Most people make the mistake of increasing their spending as their earnings increase without saving and investing proportionately as well. They, therefore, end up being money conduits, and no matter how much they earn, nothing is left by the time the month/year runs out. No investments, no savings, and very negligible net worth.

Lifestyle inflation (increasing your spending as your earnings increase) is a trap you should avoid by all means. When you are young, it’s fun to live in the moment and enjoy life. But don’t forget to plan for your future or you’ll never attain financial freedom.

If you get a raise, rather than go on an expensive trip or buy a new flashy car that obviously won’t yield income, and might even get you in debt, considers increasing your savings instead and make an investment.

Focus on the bigger picture. With the right savings and investment habits, you can grow your money and spend on more important things like taking care of your family, building a house, starting a business, and planning for early retirement.

Not being mindful of your health

In the HBO feature, ‘Becoming Warren Buffet’, while talking to a class, the Nebraska-based billionaire advised that you have only one mind and one body that should last you for the rest of your life. If you neglect to take care of it, you won’t be able to achieve your dreams in life.

READ ALSO: Signs of money issues in your relationship

To live long and avoid paying huge bills on medical treatment in the future, you need to start being proactive about your health. Maintain a healthy eating habit and have an exercise routine. Don’t fail to go for regular medical checkups. This will ensure that any health issue you might have can be identified early before it becomes serious.

    Not having an emergency budget

Don’t make the mistake of having just one savings fund. Doing so would mean that you’ll have to dip into it when an emergency arises, in which case you have not saved successfully.

Have separate savings for your retirement, emergency, investment, and so on. Your emergency fund will come in handy if you happen to lose your job, get in an accident, fall ill, or have several other unforeseen situations. It is your safety net to keep you from falling into debt.

Typically, it should provide you with three to six months of living expenses that you can fall back on when you have no income stream.

There’s also something known as a rainy day fund. This should be separate from your emergency fund. It is meant for smaller, more predictable events, such as fixing your car at the mechanic or taking your child to the hospital.

    Not making any investment

Investment is something you must not neglect if you wish to become financially free. Many people live out their lives earning a salary and paying bills, and failing to establish a source of passive income.

Granted, making an investment comes with its risks, stock market investments most of all. You won’t be able to control how the market behaves or your rate of returns. But you can control how much you want to set aside for the long-term and what you want to invest in. Try and diversify your portfolio. If you are unsure what to invest in, consider consulting a financial advisor.

    There you have it.

If you are making any of these financial mistakes, try and retrace your steps – better late than never.

  • Five health effects of cold water

Five health effects of cold water

    Fasanmi Abiola

Most people know of the significance of taking water often. It is everywhere on almost every news site and blog site about how it is fundamental to take some measure of water every day. Nonetheless, the vast majority don’t realise that the temperature of the water you are taking is likewise significant.

Many people are not aware of the fact that drinking cold water can do more harm than good.

    Below are some health effects of taking cold water too often;

    ·       Decreases heart rate

According to medical researches, taking cold water decreases heart rate and stimulates the nerve which controls the involuntary functions of the body. This is known as the vagus nerve.

The nerve is also an integral part of the nervous system. As the vagus nerve is directly affected by the low temperature of water, the heart rate eventually slows down, that is, as an emergency measure, your heart rate slows down until your body temperature reaches equilibrium once again. This is not too good for the heart as it can lead to other heart-related problems.

    ·       Effects digestion

One of the main reasons to avoid drinking cold water is because it has a serious implication on your digestion. Cold water, as well as some cold beverages, contract the blood vessels and also restrict digestion.

The natural process of absorbing nutrients during digestion is hindered when you consume cold water. The reason is your body’s focus is diverted from digestion to regulating the body temperature and the cold water.

Your body needs to spend extra energy to regulate the body temperature when you consume anything which has a very low temperature. The extra energy is actually necessary for proper digestion and absorbing the nutrients which is hindered.

    ·       Headaches

If you’re familiar with “brain freeze,” which you get because of ingesting ice cream or crushed ice, the same thing is caused by cold water/ ice water. It chills many sensitive nerves in the spine, and they immediately relay messages to your brain, which in turn causes headaches.

    ·       Constipation

Constant intake of cold water can lead to constipation. When you drink cold water, the food solidifies and hardens when passing through the body. The intestines also contract which is one of the major causes of constipation. It has been researched that drinking water that’s at room temperature helps the digestive process.

    ·       Fat storage

Taking cold water after a meal affects the breakdown of fat.  This is because cold temperatures in the body cause fats to harden and congeal, making them more difficult for the body to digest.

Even if you drink normal water, ensure that you wait for 30 minutes after a meal before drinking water to get the maximum benefits.

  • FACT CHECK: Alleged kidnap kingpin, Evans, not sentenced to death

FACT CHECK: Alleged kidnap kingpin, Evans, not sentenced to death

    By Alao Abiodun

Claim: An online news medium “tmnewsonline” (TM news magazine) and several other platforms, including observer times, kanyidaily, nigerianjournal, thecitypulsenews on August 18, 2020 published a report that kidnap kingpin Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike (a.k.a. Evans) had been sentenced to death by Lagos High Court.

Verdict: The claim that Lagos High Court sentenced the alleged kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, also known as Evans, to death is false.

    Full Text

An online news medium, tmnewsonline, on August 18, 2020 published a story in which it alleged that kidnap kingpin Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike (a.k.a. Evans) was reported to have been sentenced to death by Lagos High Court.

“Lagos High Court has sentenced notorious kidnap kingpin, Chikwudubem Onwuamadike, also known as Evans, to death. The court gave this judgement on Monday. The Lagos State Government had said Evans conspired on February 14th, 2017 at about 7.45pm at Ilupeju, Lagos, to kidnap one Donatus Dunu and collect €223,000 for his release,” the story read on the website.

Several other platforms; observer times, kanyidaily, nigerianjournal, thecitypulsenews and others also reproduced and published the story with the same headline and content.

But how true is the claim?

Evans, tagged as the “most notorious kidnapper in Nigeria” by the police, was arrested in 2017.

He was apprehended by the Inspector General of police’s Intelligence Response Team led by Abba Kyari.

In 2013, Evans was declared wanted after he allegedly masterminded the attempted kidnap of Mr Vincent Obianudo, a businessman who owns the popular ‘Young Shall Grow Motors’.

The suspect was said to have carried out kidnapping operations for more than five years before he met his waterloo.

The Nation reports that Evans has changed lawyers about five times during the course of his trial which commenced August 30, 2017.

    Verification

As of the time of filing this report about the proceedings on Evans’ case, The Nation reports that Justice Taiwo of Ikeja Special Offences Court listened to Inspector Idowu Haruna, a member of the Intelligence Response Team of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) on Tuesday, August 18, 2020, who said he obtained the confessional statements of alleged kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, under a conducive atmosphere.

Evans was arraigned before Justice Taiwo with three other defendants — Joseph Emeka, Chiemeka Arinze and Udeme Upong — over alleged attempt to kidnap the Chairman of the Young Shall Grow Motors, Mr. Vincent Obianodo.

They are facing a seven-count charge including murder, attempt to commit murder, attempt to kidnap, sale and transfer of firearms.

    They all pleaded not guilty.

Justice Taiwo, however, adjourned further hearing in the matter till August 25.

Justice Hakeem Oshodi of an Ikeja High Court on August 14, declared that four co-defendants of alleged kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, have cases to answer, dismissing their ‘no case submission’ application.

Ogechi Uchechukwu, Chilaka Ifeanyi, Okwuchukwu Nwachukwu, and Victor Aduba had filed no-case submissions, praying the court to dismiss the charges against them by the Lagos State government.

Evans is also standing trial before Justice Oshodi alongside Uche Amadi, Ogechi Uchechukwu, Chilaka Ifeanyi, Okwuchukwu Nwachukwu, and Victor Aduba over the alleged kidnap of the Chief Executive Officer of Maydon Pharmaceutical Limited, Mr Donatius Dunu.

Justice Oshodi also adjourned till October 16.

In July, Justice Hakeem Oshodi of an Ikeja High Court ordered the Lagos State Office of the Public Defender (OPD) to take over the defence of the alleged kidnap kingpin because of Evans’ inability to pay his legal fees.

Director, Public Affairs of the Lagos State Ministry of Justice (MOJ), Mr Kayode Oyekanmi, dismissed the news as fake.

He said: “This is fake news, someone also called me, this is fake news to the extent that I know. Nothing like such.”

The Nation contacted tmnewsonline (TM news magazine) to ascertain the source of the story, a male Temidayo Babalola, who said he is the Editor, could not provide the source to the story when asked.

    Conclusion

Alleged kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike (a.k.a. Evans), facing several count-charges since August 30, 2017 was not sentenced to death by a court. The story by tmnewsonline and several other platforms is false and misleading.

  • Nine things that can damage your eyes

Nine things that can damage your eyes

    By Samuel Oamen

The eye is a very important part of the body that must be given special attention and care.

Here are things that may contribute to bad eyes sight:

    ·        Being under the sun with sunglasses

Sunglasses won’t just make you look good. Exposing your bare eyes to the sun is actually one of the most common things that damage your eyesight and it can have pretty serious consequences.

For absolute protection, always rock a wide-brimmed hat and shades while you’re in the sun. To be useful, you’ll want sunglasses that offer UV blocking, which is usually printed on a sticker attached to the lenses.

100% protection is standard these days, so don’t settle for a lower figure. They may cost a little more than glasses that only offer 50% protection, but UV rays are known to increase the risk of cataracts, damage the retina and increase your risk of getting skin cancer on your eyelids, so it’s well worth the extra cost.

    ·       Whitening drops

If you regularly use eye drops, you probably think that you are keeping your eyes in great condition. Whitening drops, for example, often look just the same as medicine, and have the added benefit of making your eyes look white and healthy. No risk, right? Wrong.

Drops that reduce the redness in your eyes do so by restricting blood vessels temporarily that’s why your eyes will appear redder than ever when the effect wears off, and the blood vessels dilate. Definitely don’t make using whitening drops a habit.

    ·       Swimming without Goggles!

    Hitting the pool?

Grab some goggles to stop pool chemicals from going in your eyes.

Likewise if you are doing anything that releases chemicals or could result in debris hitting you.

Gardening can be harmful to the eyes because of the dirt that can be disturbed during weeding, mowing the lawn and planting. Dirt and dust molecules can cause irritation and may even scratch the cornea of the eye.

Protective eyewear is a must. Also be really careful that nothing can hit you in the eyes, because that’s the leading cause of cornea abrasions.

    ·        Rubbing your eyes

As tempting as it may be, it’s a big no-no. Rubbing them too hard can break the blood vessels under the eyelids. So to soothe irritated eyes, try a cold compress instead.

    ·        Not eating well balanced diets

Yes — diet and nutrition matter. In fact, some fruits and vegetables are crucial for optimum eye health, especially ones with vitamins C and E, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids. The AAO suggests adding citrus fruits, vegetables oils, nuts, whole grains, leafy greens, and fish to your meals as much as possible.

Even more important? Water. Staying hydrated is key for tear production and keeping eyes well-lubricated. Also, make sure to skip foods high in sodium, which can dehydrate your body.

    ·       Misusing eye makeup

Anything you put near your eye is a potential risk. And yes, this includes your mascara, eyeliner, eye shadow, and eye creams. So make sure to apply makeup far away from your lash line so you don’t block the oil glands of your lids — a build up here can cause infections.

Also, throw away your eye makeup after three months. Bacteria loves to grow in dark, damp places, so your mascara could be a breeding ground to some nasty infections.

    ·       Not getting enough sleep

Sleep deprivation can lead to a number of problems, including weight gain, depression, and decreased immune function. Moreover, a lack of sleep is also hurting your eyes (some symptoms include twitching, dry eyes, blurry vision, and pain). Be sure to get a minimum of seven hours a night and remember, put down that smartphone before bed.

    ·       Watching TV at night

In fact, looking at any type of screen right before bed in the dark, including your cell phone, e-reader, television, and computer, is bad for you. The levels of light are changing rapidly, so your eyes have to work hard to process the changes, which can lead to eyestrain, pain, headaches, dry eye, and redness.

    ·       Smoking
