Sometimes, fraudsters may also setup a fake argument or fight to lure a crowd that they can easily prey on. You can hardly tell which argument or fight is real or not.

    ·        Don’t loiter at night

Hoodlums hang around in some parts of Lagos. Most of them live in the environs and usually stay out on the streets till late night, mostly at solitary areas.

Generally, at night, solitary areas are a good scene for a crime and anyone can take advantage of this. Phones, laptops and cars get snatched in such places whether day or night.

  • VAT: What you need to know about ‘proposed increase’ from 5% – 7.5%

    By Alao Abiodun

After 26 years, the Federal Government has made the proposal to increase the rate of Value Added Tax (VAT) from five per cent to seven point five per cent with effect from 2020.

Here is what you need to know about the proposed ‘VAT Increment’ and how the hike affects you. Alao Abiodun Reports

What is Value Added Tax (VAT)?

Value Added Tax (VAT) in Nigeria is a consumption tax that is backed up by the Value Added Tax Act of 1993. It is a Federal Tax which is managed by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

VAT is a multi-stage tax which is imposed on goods and services as they pass through the various stages in the business chain. From manufacturing, importation, wholesaling and retailing but however, the burden of the payment is borne by the final consumer because it is included in the selling price.

The VAT Act 1993 provides for a recover-ability system whereby VAT, which is paid during the course of production, is recovered by the taxpayer in form of input VAT and ultimately passed down to the final consumer.

VAT is calculated at a flat rate of 5% of the cost of service and products and is charged on a wide array of goods and services in Nigeria. Much as it is known that VAT will increase the revenue base of Nigeria, it cannot be free from some problem.

The scope and coverage of VAT is extremely broad and applies to all imported, supplied or manufactured goods and services in Nigeria, except those that are specifically listed as exempt or zero-rated.

    Only a few items are exempted from VAT in Nigeria. These include exported services and items such as;

    ·         Medical and pharmaceuticals products

    ·         Basic food items

    ·         Baby products

    ·         Medical services

    ·         Plays and performances conducted by educational institutions as part of learning

    ·         Materials and equipment imported for use in downstream gas activities.

Suppliers of exempted goods are not required to charge VAT on their sales and cannot claim input tax for VAT paid on their purchases.

    The background

On September 11, the Federal Executive Council agreed to hike in Value Added Tax, VAT from 5 per cent to 7.5 per cent.

The decision of the federal government to undertake this increment was not unexpected as there had been murmurings in government circles on the need for an increase of the country’s VAT.

However, the increment of Value Added Tax from five per cent to 7.5 per cent have continued to spark up mixed reactions from financial analyst and Nigerians at large.

It should be noted that the federal governments’ plan to generate more revenues to finance national development led to the creation of ‘Strategic Revenue Growth Initiative’ which in turn birthed the VAT Increment.

However, the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, has said that the proposed increase of the Value-Added Tax (VAT) rate by the federal government is subject to the review and approval of the National Assembly.

Read Also; Why NLC should resist the VAT increment

Ahmed said the decision will be communicated to the National Assembly for consideration alongside the 2020 Appropriation Bill.

    How the hike affects Nigerians

Almost every Nigerian can attest to the fact that the cost of living is currently higher than it was in previous years.

From a simple economic point of view, any increase in VAT would disproportionately affect poor people.

Going deeper, the biggest challenge is that any increase in indirect taxes affects the price of goods and services. This in turn would affect the country’s inflation rate.

If the Value Added Tax (VAT) increased to 7.5 per cent is implemented, it is expected to generate not less than N2trillion into the government treasury in 2020.

According to statistics, Nigeria has one of the lowest VAT which is a variant of sales tax in the world. Asides Eritrea, which also has a five percent rate, Nigeria is the only other country in Africa with a single digit VAT of five per cent.

Globally the highest sales tax rate is held by Bhutan which has 50 per cent sales tax.

In Africa, Madagascar and Morocco hold the highest rate at 20 per cent followed by Cameroon which has a 19.25 per cent sales tax. Niger holds a 19 per cent rate.

Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad Ivory Coast, Rwanda, Congo, Mali all have a sales tax rate of 18 per cent.

Kenya and Zambia hold 16 per cent while Ethiopia, Gambia, South Africa, Zimbabwe all hold 15 per cent rates.

Egypt holds 14 per cent while Ghana and Botswana have 12 per cent sales tax. Somalia and Angola alongside Djibouti and Comoros all have 10 per cent sales tax rate.

The National Tax Policy, the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) and the 2018 International Monetary Fund (IMF) Report on Nigeria have all stress the need for an increased focus on revenue generation from VAT in Nigeria. While the dwindling oil prices is no longer news, the weakness of the naira against the

While many economic analysts have viewed the VAT rate now as ‘bad timing’ or perhaps ‘ill-timed’ and inconsistent with current economic reality, they are of the idea that the increase will lead to higher inflation, interest rate hike, more unemployment and generally make people poorer.

A closer look also reveals that this will affect market operations, especially the formal sector because an increase will discourage consumption (People will tend to buy fewer items to save cost). This will hurt businesses and affect employees.

    The minimum wage dilemma

Sadly, for more than four months after President Muhammadu Buhari signed the new minimum wage bill into law, workers in the country are yet to begin to benefit from the increment.

It is crystal clear that the government already owes the workers a backlog of arrears. The longer the negotiation on consequential adjustment takes, the more the backlog of arrears will leave a huge debt burden on government.

  • Side hustles you can do for extra incomes

    By Samuel Oamen

In this age and time, there are many side jobs you can do to add to your monthly income. These jobs can be executed part time, full time or remotely. Some of these jobs don’t even require you to have an office or shop before you can do them.

Many people are already making huge sum of money from these jobs. There are actually many of such jobs but in this article I listed only ten of such side hustles you can do to make extra bucks for yourself, either as a student, youth corp member, job seeker, even as an employed graduate.

    Below are the hustles:

    1. Computer/Phone Repair Service.

If you’re good at fixing things, you could start a phone and computer repair service. We live in a world where everyone owns a mobile phone or computer. This means that there is a big market for phone/computer repairers in Nigeria. You must not be a science student to become a computer or phone engineer.
There is a big market for phone engineers in Nigeria. You could even offer a delivery service to serve your customers better. This you can do by adding an extra sum of about N1,000 for the delivery of the gadget after repair. You can as well become a phone repairer that is well sought after by including home services to your services. Some people might want you to come fix their phones at home because they are busy, the rate of doing home services should be higher.

    2. Car Washing

Car wash business is really blooming because a lot of people are becoming car owners every day and because they would like to keep their cars clean. Some car owners will always visit a car wash every day. It is a side hustle you can venture into with little or no capital.
In fact you can start off this hustle with just bucket and detergents, visit place where cars are parked, tell car owners that you can wash their cars and make it sparkle inside out.

    3. Buying and reselling on social Media

The advent of technology has greatly increased the rate of buying and selling on the internet. This has made a lot of young people become remote traders. They buy and sell using the various social media platforms like Facebook, twitter, Instagram.
This is how a lot of people start their e-commerce journey, buy from from Amazon, Alibaba, Jumia, Konga and the likes and resell either on social media or directly to their friends. You can even spend some little cash promoting the products on Facebook or Instagram, just to make people aware of what you are selling, and sell off your products quicker.

    4. Laundry / Dry cleaning services

Many working class men and ladies today hardly have time to do their laundry after work or during weekends. So what they do is to pack all the clothes they had used during the week to a laundry shop. This particular hustle is recently the most sought after hustle. You can decide to render some home services, by going to the house of big men around your neighborhood during the weekends to wash and iron their used clothes.
You can choose to take them home to wash if permitted. In fact these days some people prefer you come and wash for them at home to avoid stories that touch the heart. We have heard of laundry men who wear their customer’s clothes to parties and events. So some people really don’t like giving out clothes to small laundry shops anymore, except you can prove to be trust worthy.
Another way you can go about this side hustle is to tell people you run laundry and dry cleaning service even without having a shop or a washing machine, and all you do is collect the clothes from them, take the clothes to a good dry-cleaning shop, beat down the price and make your own gain from the change, you don’t even need to own a shop, it is like running errand for your customers. Remember to add that you also do delivery services.

    5. Social media consultant

Almost everyone uses Facebook, Twitter, instagram, and Pinterest these days. But do you know that many companies are ready to pay you to help them manage their social media accounts either as their employee or as a remote digital marketer? You don’t need to study marketing to be qualified for this. All you need to be is being tech savvy, be conversant with the new trends on various social media platforms, learn how to create contents, do online advertisements, engage followers by creating engaging posts, then take some digital marketing certifications to boast your chances of getting a client. As a social media consultant you should be conversant with
    * search marketing (SEO search engine optimisation, PPC pay per click), content creation, inbound marketing, digital display advertising, e-mail marketing, social media marketing, mobile marketing, analytics and so on. With these you can start working as a social media consultant.

    6. Cook / Personal chef

Are you a foodie or do you cook and people start asking for more after eating, you should better make it a side hustle, cook for people and get paid. There are many people who don’t have that time to cook for themselves at home and are seeking the services of a chef, who would do all their cooking for them. You can do this hustle even as a student living in the hostel. You can cook stews, rice, soups etc and sell to students who are too busy on campus. This is a very lucrative side job. You can as well cook for events and parties, let people know what you can do, sell yourself by cooking delicious delicacies. Be sure you don’t disappoint, you must be very careful and attentive, and you must not be a talkative if you must be successful in this hustle.

    7. Event DJ

Are you a lover of music? Do you have a good laptop with numerous musical compilations in and around the world? You can become an event DJ just with these. All you need is a laptop, get the victual DJ application installed in it and that’s all. Be updated with the latest music and make sure you have a playlist. When you start making money, you can buy the other instruments. Such instruments are the DJ controller, amplifiers, speakers and likes. But for the main time, you can always hire those equipment you can’t afford for now. Just be sure you update your playlists and make mix-tapes with your stage name.

    8. Photography

Photography is blooming in Nigeria. Gone are the days when old men and papas are the only photographers we have around our neighborhood. The advent of software like Photoshop, Corel draw, fireworks and likes means you can edit pictures and make them look perfectly beautiful.
All you need is a camera and a laptop for editing your work. These days we hardly see a wedding without a pre-wedding photos and people especially ladies hardly celebrate their birthdays without going to get a birthday photo shoot. So photography market is big, you can visit places like the beach, leisure parks, with your clients and give them a mind blowing shots. Good thing about photography is that you can also add your name as the water mark for reference purpose.

    9. Cleaning and fumigation

Cleaning is a job you can start up without any equipment save for your broom, dusters and buckets. To do this side job you must be very humble and be industrious. There are so many big men around in Nigeria who need trust worthy part-time cleaners who would always come around to help in cleaning, reach out to such people and tell them what you can do. You can as well add Fumigation services to your cleaning job, learn about insecticides that eradicates insect and those ones that can also kill grasses, a lot of people require the services of Fumigator.

    10. Teaching musical instruments

If you are good at playing musical instrument (basically the piano, guitar and Sax) and you are someone with a good temperament, you’ve got what you need to teach others and make money. People have built houses from this hustle, I know someone in particular who goes to schools to teach music part-time and also does private teaching, he also has tutors working for him, they cover some other schools for him.
You can take up this side job even without having your own instruments to teach with, many of these schools have numerous instruments, all they need is a tutor to come teach their pupils. You can also add instrument repairs, buying and selling of instruments to this side job and in little or no time you will be smiling home with cool cash.
Finally in anything you do, be sure to add some spice to give your hustle some hedge over others.

  • Six signs to show your partner is truly committed to you

Before you can determine the seriousness of your relationship, it is imperative to be able to have conversations about tough subjects with your partner, such as having a clear idea of what being ‘committed’ means to you and learn about your partner’s definition of it.

You could be dating your partner for a while and think things are going great. But you can never really know for sure unless they actually tell you how they feel about you.

You should also know that for some, being comfortable enough to express how they feel takes time. So here is how to tell if your partner is truly committed to what you share:

    They speak in “We”

Bringing your partner into your world is an essential part of a relationship and a proof of commitment.

People in committed relationships speak about themselves as “we.” This simply means that they are bringing you into their lives and making you part of many of the things they do.

    They are highly satisfied

The strongest predictor of commitment is satisfaction. If you are highly satisfied, you are often committed.

They see their relationship as better

Committed partners tend to believe their relationships are better than other people’s relationships.

They don’t pay attention to potential alternative partners. They don’t even notice attractive people around them.

    They make sacrifices

What is commitment without sacrifice? Committed partners make sacrifices for each other and don’t expect favours to be returned, at least not immediately. They have a more long-range view of things and make decisions based on what’s best for the relationship, not what’s best for themselves as individuals.

They are always ready to try new things with you

Trying new things is scary. There’s always the possibility of failure and nobody ever wants to look stupid. But if your partner is willing to step outside of their comfort and do something they’ve never done before with you, they’re likely all in.

They are willing to talk about the future

Just because they share something real, serious and genuine, they are willing to have a discussion about the future with you.

If your partner has dropped their walls and let you in, that’s a good sign they are serious about you. A partner who is all in is willing to engage in vulnerable and potentially uncomfortable conversations.

  • Four common interview mistakes that can cost you a job

It’s a well-known fact that an interview can make or break your chances of getting a job, regardless of how impressive your resume is or how great a fit you believe you are for the job. To have a great interview, there some things or habits (mistakes) you should ensure you avoid to improve your chances of excelling in an interview. Below are four common interview mistakes that can cost you a job.

    Oversharing

As much as possible, you should try to remember that you’re speaking to an interviewer not a gist partner. Sometimes, in an attempt to project confidence, an interviewee might become way too chatty, sharing unnecessary details of events he/she has no business talking about in an interview. Be sure to keep your nerves in check and stick to more straight to the point answers. Practicing your approach to interview questions beforehand can go a long way in helping you succeed.

Answering questions in a rehearsed way

At the end of the day, interviewers want to genuinely interact with an interviewee and get some insight into his/her true nature and character. This is difficult to do when the interviewee is almost robotic with responses and mannerisms. Even if you have come across the questions asked before, try as much as possible to be authentic with your answers and to let your personality come through. Smile, loosen up a little and don’t be stiff, regardless of how terribly nervous you might feel.

Not being smart with your mannerisms

Nobody wants a dull, slow or unresponsive person as an employee, as a result interviewers tends to be put off by interviewees that are not smart and quick-witted with their mannerisms. Try as much as you can to avoid talking slowly when answering or asking questions. Project your voice when you speak, avoid sounding dull and speaking in low tones. Make appropriate eye contact (don’t stare down at the interviewer) and also avoid talking too quickly. Ensure you’re audible when you speak and you’re voice projects as much confidence as you can muster, regardless of how nervous you feel.

Giving uninformed answers to questions about the company

If don’t know something about the company, you should refrain for scrambling to come up with just any answer to the question. Ensure you do your research about the company of course, but if there is something you don’t know; be tactful with how you answer the question. You can offer to share the information you do know or are sure of about the company. Or you can apologize for the oversight, and assure the interviewer you will extend your research and learn the answer to the question as soon as possible.

This might not totally save you, but it’s much better than giving an uninformed answer. However, you should ensure as much as you can that this never happens and you do your research well enough to answer any question about the company.

  • Yes, Ondo council Chairman bought four tyres but did not commission it!

Claim: Media publication says Ondo state local government Chairman inaugurated four tyres of a refurbished hummer bus.

MISLEADING: The Chairman did indeed buy tyres for a vehicle they were refurbishing which was posted on his Facebook page. However, the tyres were never commissioned or inaugurated.

    Full Text:

On Monday, 9th September, a media report said the Chairman of Okitipupa local government council, Omo’ba Abayomi Adesanya inaugurated (commissioned) four tyres. The tyres were said to be used to refurbish a Toyota Hummer Bus.

“The Chairman of Okitipupa LG, Omo’ba Abayomi Adesanya has purchased (4) brand new tyre of maxxix brand for the refurbished Toyota Hummer bus that has been abandoned for 7 years. Omo’ba is working, Okitipupa LG is moving”, he wrote on Facebook.

The influential nature of Abayomi Adesanya is undeniable; he was the pioneer spokesman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo state. This is perhaps one of the reasons the statement is facing heavy criticism in the media.

When the news surfaced, the consensus from the majority of public response questioned the relevance of the post, as this would not ordinarily be considered as noteworthy. The people were of the opinion that buying tyres was not an achievement that should be publicized.

It is standard practise for politicians in Nigeria to publicise their achievements, even when it is mediocre. Did you know that ‘VIP’ or ‘ultramodern toilets’ have been commissioned by politicians in the past and even added to the national budget? However, Nigerians are becoming more vocal on the ludicrousness of such projects.

    Verification

The Nation did in fact confirm that the quote above originated from a Facebook page with the name “Omo’ba Adesanya Okitipupa LG”.

The Chairman, Omo’ba Abayomi Adesanya when contacted on phone described it as publicity gone awry; adding, he bought the tyres as part of his activities in the council. He said that he never commissioned any tyres but admitted that he brought the tyres for a vehicle they were refurbishing.

Interestingly, turns out the facebook page is managed by Abayomi Adesanya’s media aide. And according to Omo’ba, the aide in question posted the pictures on Facebook without briefing him; apparently he did so just to keep the people abreast of what he was doing.

Regardless, we checked the post and it did not state anything about him commissioning or inaugurating tyres; nor were there any images to corroborate this claim. It only states that the Chairman purchased tyres.

    Conclusion

This post is misleading because although the event happened (purchase of tyres and a post on Facebook celebrating it), the primary claim (commissioning of tyres) is not entirely true. The Chairman did indeed buy tyres for a vehicle they were refurbishing which was posted on his Facebook page; however, the tyres were never commissioned or inaugurated.

This fact-check was done by a Dubawa Fact-checking Fellow in collaboration with The Nation Newspaper.
