Increasing cases of obesity in Nigeria is linked to poor nutrition – Herbal Pro

Obesity formally thought to be a disease affecting mostly the rich in Nigeria is now gradually finding more victims in the middle and lower class. According to Medical New Today, Obesity is a condition where a person accumulates a lot of body fat that might have negative effects on their health.

According to Herbal Pro Limited, a company focused on finding herbal remedies to healthy issues reported that the increasing trend in cases of obesity in Nigeria can be traced to poor diet and lack of sensitization. The report also stated that the increase in cases of cardiovascular diseases, Type 2 diabetes, musculoskeletal disorder, cancer of the breast, colon and endometrial can be linked to the increase in cases of obesity.

Available statics shows that there is a 35% increase in the cases of obesity in Nigeria and only 5% represents individuals in the higher social class. According to the report, some of the factors influencing this change in trend include a change in diet influenced by the rise in the cost of living, lack of sensitization about healthy living and lack of proper diagnostics and treatment centers.

The research went further to state that individuals with protruding stomach also stand a risk of dying from heart-related diseases than those with a normal waistline even though they have a healthy weight.

To reverse this trend, Herbal Pro listed proper education about the proper nutrition and diet, including eating a balanced diet of carbohydrate, proteins, fat and healthy oils as well as vitamins and fibers, removal of junk foods and processed sugar as well as the importance of staying fit and embedding a healthy lifestyle.

While in some cases healthy living can help you lose some pounds and maintain a correct BMI (Body Mass Index), some people may need supplements to assist with the weight loss process. Most Nigerians prefer herbal weight loss capsules to the common weight loss teas and coffees because it is more convenient, it’s not messy and saves time. It is also pertinent to imbed habit of checking your BMI regularly to ensure that you remain at your proper BMI.

    Culled from Safe or Dangerous

  • Circumcise your Daughter or we all die!

Circumcise your Daughter or we all die!

This is a pathetic story of Mr. Nwokoma Donald, a young Nigerian parent who is being hounded by his extended family for refusing to allow the circumcision of his daughter, an act that defies age-long tradition of the south-eastern part of the country. As narrated by Yusuf Odaudu from Lagos. Excerpts:

I heard strange noise coming from his apartment at about 11:40 PM, as we share the same rented building located at No 7, Ikuomola Street, Cement Bus/stop, Dopemu, Lagos. I was alarmed because few days ago, Donald called to tell me that he was going to travel with his family, and it was urgent.

I could feel his gasps intervening with the voice as he managed to express himself. It was clear that he was in a hurry to catchup with a taxi or flight. It was quite sudden and unusual of him, but since I was still at my workplace, I couldn’t probe further. He hung up even before I could ask his destination.

So, the noise couldn’t have been from the owner of the apartment who had already announced his journey few days earlier. I was transfixed in thoughts, trying to figure out the situation. But the more I ponder and peep through my windows in search of a familiar figure, the more the banging and screeching lingered until it disappeared faintly with some footsteps out of the compound.

The following morning, I was curious to know the cause of the noise. I went to his apartment only to find the place broken into and vandalized. I dialed his line but it was switched off. I saw a threatening note left at the threshold of the door with the words, “Anyi ka n’ebido ebido. This is just a warning for your refusal to succumb to our age long family tradition of female circumcision”.

I was horrified for a moment as I kept wondering what brought the strange visitors, and why they vandalized my neigbour’s apartment. Perhaps they were the group of people who kidnap people for money rituals. Weird thoughts kept popping up in my head but they weren’t close to the actual motive for that nocturnal visit. Some of our neighbours also joined in the lamentation and suggested that we should report to the police because the family might be in danger.

As we kept pondering what to do, I finally got across to Donald. I told him that his apartment was vandalized by a mysterious group, though I wasn’t sure they took any property but they left a note; then I read out the note to him. He said the visitors came to circumcise his daughter, which was why he left the house. He narrated how the hunt to get his daughter circumcised started, and how it was an age long tradition he was running away from.

It dawned on me that Donald and his family may have been in trouble, had they not travelled a few days before the incident.

I have heard and read about female circumcision and how it has gained deep roots in some cultures in Africa. No doubt, it is a barbaric practice inflicted on innocent young women. In its most extreme form known as infibulation, it can involve the removal of all external genitalia and the stitching up of the labia leaving only a very small opening for sex, urination, menstruation and giving birth. This often makes a later operation necessary to create a larger opening.

According to reports, a particularly brutal operation can leave a woman with infections ranging from hemorrhage, abscesses and, sometimes, a lifelong loss of sensation during sex.

There have been global objections to the practice of genital cutting by international organizations, especially as it involves circumstances that violate human rights. Amnesty International, a human rights organization, reports that the operation is often carried out using blunt tools — penknives, fragments of glass or tin cans.

The Pan-African Committee on Traditional Practices estimates that two million girls in Africa undergo genital cutting each year which endangers both their health and their lives. The committee also reports that circumcised women experience chronic pain, chronic pelvic infections, development of cysts, genital ulcers, excessive scar tissue formation, infection of the reproductive system, decreased sexual enjoyment and psychological consequences, such as post-traumatic stress disorder.

The Amnesty International also frowns at the fact that the victims of this barbaric practice are denied of their rights to make a choice on what affects their lives.

Donald has, since then, resorted to moving his family around different locations for fear of being tracked down by these predators and to avoid further contacts and anything that might endanger his life and that of his family.

The sad experience of Donald is one that would elicit pity and rage to any sentient being. Pity in the sense that he, though innocent of the customs, has been frustrated out of his country of birth. Rage in the sense that it involves an innocent young girl whose only crime is that she was born a girl.

Interestingly, the Nigerian government took a historic step in May, 2015, outlawing the practice of female genital mutilation, a move activists have described as “hugely important” in curbing the excesses associated with the custom. But until this enlightenment reaches the grass root, Donald’s daughter and other innocent young girls are still at the mercy of those predators.

According to UNICEF, more than 30 million girls are at risk of being subjected to FGM over the next decade and around 125 million women have undergone the procedure. ‎

There is an urgent need to increase grassroots enlightenment with a view to curb this menace, hoping that Nwokoma’s daughter doesn’t become a victim of this ill wind that blows no one any good.

By ascribing mishaps, bad luck, deaths and all sorts of misfortune to uncircumcised women, the perpetrators are being driven by a strong illusion that is shrouded in falsehood and calumny, one that seeks to destroy the future of innocent young women.

  • Agony of a sinking nation

    Agony of a sinking nation

Gone are the days when truth used to be at the top of our knightly traits, nonextant are the times when these words “I pledge to Nigeria my country to be faithful, loyal and honest, to serve Nigeria with all my strength, to defend her unity and uphold her honour and glory, so help me God” meant more than few shekels of silver, defunct are the era of patriotic spirits when we would stand against all nefarious acts. We forget so facilely what our fore fathers do tell us when we were young, they always say that “a good name and reputation is far better than a pot of gold”.

It is feasible that our nonchalant act leaves a large hole in the hearts of our fore fathers because we’ve not only broken the chains of love that binds us together as family, we have burnt the chains and the ashes are nowhere to be found, we have neglected the svelte and easy way in clamor for the obese fields, we have failed to heed to our hunters whistle and as the Yoruba would say, “Omo ta ba bawi to n warunki, on setan ati parun” (meaning: a child that is being reprimanded and refuses to listen, Is heading to destruction).

Our present leaders have not been of help either, they keep smiling in their shame; wallowing in immorality and drowning in misery yet they have refused to vacate the throne of leadership, their fat asses have mysteriously glued themselves to the seats of fame and their gluttonous mouths keep chasing the so called “National cake”, now tell me, are these the lamps that are meant to guide us to the right path?

Never!.., how can we ever think of taking examples from slithering snakes when we clearly know that the only thing we will gain are lectures on how to kill. Our leaders have insulted us, they have shamed our personalities and they have brought disgrace to our land. It is now left for us to make the change that we desire.

Our current president, Muhammadu Buhari had said it all when he told us that the change begins with us. Although, a lot of people disagreed but the truth will always remain unchanged, or what do we say about traders that hike the prices of their goods while hiding beneath the umbrella of recession, or youths that choose not to study or learn a vocation but would rather roam the streets aimlessly, causing violence and creating chaos.

Constantly, Nigeria has been trampled upon by little countries even with its large population and cultural diversities; she has lost her self-respect and honour as a result of corruption, bribery, insecurity, and other vicious acts displayed by her leaders. Nigeria who was a great nation, the land of peace, unity and progress is now a country that has no value in the sight of people.

It’s such a big shame that we followers keep making wrong choices  when it’s time for election but even the political system is rotten because we operate a multi-party system yet it seems as if only two parties are in existence. The All Progressives Congress (APC) are yet to provide this long awaited change and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have also failed to shelter us against the burning rain, so what do we do?

Recession and depression is our motto nowadays, we say there’s no money but why then are the whistle blowers finding money hidden in every nook and crannies, even everyone now wants to dive into whistle blowing business “what an achievement!”. This is just too bad that even we followers can’t stand up to our leaders because we are scared of being hurt; I guess it is high time we run because “there is fire on the mountain”

Although it is very cowardly to run at a time like this but we’ve been caught unawares many times, we are too weak to oppose our oppressors, we are the ants and they are the giants, we stand no chance against their fierceness, we are helpless in this regressing state we find ourselves but we know that “día is God o!”

Howbeit, it is imperative that we change not just our actions but our thinking too. The Yorubas would say “ka lo fí kankan we orí wa lodo to ‘n san” (meaning: we should wash our heads in a flowing stream) so we won’t be like dogs that pick bread crumbs falling from our master’s table.

Based on logistics, the clamant solution to our problems is prayer that supercedes prayer.

  • International day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking

International day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking

There is no argument about the fact that drug abuse and illicit trafficking of substances is a worldwide feeling of discomfort that has a far-reaching consequence because it is fraught with crime, corruption and terrorism. We can observe that Nigeria has the highest consumption of illicit drugs. Due to the invention of new technologies, the production of these drugs has increase which makes them to become very cheap and therefore affordable.

International day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking is a day set aside to raise awareness to major problems that the unlawful use and distribution of drugs portends for the society.

The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking serves to draw awareness to the need for action and cooperation in order to achieve a drug-free world.  Illicit drugs and their trafficking pose a large health threat to humanity. Drug problems and dependencies put a great deal of pressure on health care systems and constitute a threat to the safety and well-being of humans all around the globe.

Long-term drug abuse has been linked to poor general health, contraction of diseases through needle sharing, trouble with the law, poor self-hygiene, alienation from loved ones, psychological illnesses and death from overdose.

In December 1987, the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was designated by the United Nations. It is celebrated annually on June 26, a symbolic day that commemorates the dismantling of the opium trade in Guangdong. The day also serves as an opportunity for Member Nations to reaffirm their support for UN Conventions that attempt to control the world’s drug supply.

Drug abuse according to Wikipedia is a patterned use of a drug in which the user consumes the substance in amount or with methods which are harmful to themselves. Drug abuse can also be associated with taking overdose of a drug. Examples of abused drugs include: cocaine, heroin, marijuana, prescription drugs, including opioids.

Illicit trafficking on the other hand is an illegal trading, selling or dealing in specified goods.

‘Health’ is the ongoing theme of the world drug campaign. According to the United Nations report, the value of illegal drugs traded around the world is put at more than $32billion yearly. According to this statistics, we can see that drug abuse and trafficking is a problem and major deterrent to humanity and the wellbeing of the youths in particular.

The most surprising thing is the increasing number of secondary school and tertiary institution students taken to consuming hard drugs. Other groups of individuals susceptible to drug abuse are drivers, conductors, artists, musicians, etc.

Considering the biological implications of drug abuse, it is pertinent that we understand not only the injurious effect of substance abuse to our organs, but also to unborn children at the fetal stage. An expectant mother who is taken to drug abuse might be causing more harm than good to her unborn child.

Psychosocially, drug abuse destroys families progressively; once a member of a family becomes overtly addicted to drug (especially psychedelic drugs), he or she begins to act irrationally. This can prove huge danger for those around them, as there are a plethora of stories of siblings hurting each other due to drug abuse.

The consequences of drug abuse have been violence, rape, suicide, poor academic performance, poor health condition, school dropout etc. Drug abuse is associated with vices such as cultism, armed robbery, thuggery, etc.

Conclusively, it is expedient that government (federal and state), and all their policy wonks should begin to not only pass laws to curb the preponderance of drug abuse, but also, to enforce the extant laws on substance abuse.

Parents are also to play key roles in the educational progress of their children through effective communication with the children and with the help of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and other paraphernalia of government like NAFDAC, NDLEA, and Human right groups. Investing more on technological devices that can enhance the ability to detect hard drug traffickers is also advisable.

  • Common reasons visa applications get rejected

Common reasons visa applications get rejected

What makes an Embassy or Consulate reject providing you with a Schengen Visa?

This is the question many people ask anytime they are about to apply for such a visa. The fact is that whenever a Schengen visa or any visa gets rejected, there is something UNSATISFACTORY as regards of that visa application.

Many visa applicants get confused and unable to exactly understand the reason for their visa refusal. That is why the article will focus on presenting the commonly known reasons for such refusal.

A visa application might be considered unsuccessful if the consular officer fails to get from the candidate all the needed information about him/her. Lacking to possess such information, the consular officer will be incapable of deciding if the candidate qualifies to be given a visa.

On the other hand, sometimes the consular might get information from the applicant that is unacceptable or beyond the fixed procedures. Sometimes the candidate is prone of illegitimate and/or dishonest activities. In all of the aforementioned cases, the officer is led to DENY offering a visa to the applicant.

LEARN which are the Most Common Reasons For Failed Schengen Visa Applications, in order to avoid being amongst those who perform them:

    1. Past or Current Criminal Actions

The past and current circumstances and actions of the applicant matter a lot in the decision of the consular officer in issuing a Schengen visa. In such cases, the refusal might occur because the applicant is considered a threat to the public policy, internal security or public wealth of Schengen Area (i.e. terrorism, drug abuse, child abuse, addiction, other serious crimes).

    2. False Travel Document

There is a common destiny for all the individuals (applicants) who attempt to present false travel documents to the embassy or consulate, trying to misrepresent their identity, using fake identity – and that is an absolute visa denial and other accompanying unfavourable consequences.

    3. Insufficient Explanation For The Purpose And Circumstances Of The Planned Stay

Another motive to lead the consular office to deny your Schengen Visa is failing to have the needed justification for your purpose and conditions of the planned travel and stay. Such are the cases of:

    • Failing to present an employment and professional qualification that matches with the presented financial situation
    • Incapacity to provide documents that support the purpose of travel and stay in the Schengen Area
    • Missing to apply for a visa period in conformity with the presented travel itinerary and holiday right or revenue situation
    • The inability to offer unchanging declarations about the purpose of travel and stay

    4. Damaged Passport

A reason for a visa refusal could be presenting a  passport that is not kept in a good condition. Such case can be when passport pages are detaching or missing when the cover of the passport is damaged and so on.

    5. Passport Invalidity

The alternative motive to lead the consular officer denying your visa application is presenting a passport that is not acceptable for the Embassy or Consulate. Such cases are classified the following:

    • Presenting a passport that does not have a valid period less than three (3) remaining months after the return from the visit in the Schengen Area
    • Presenting a passport that does not possess two different blank visa pages
    • Presenting a Travel Document Booklet instead of a valid passport
    • Presenting a valid passport that is older than ten (10) years

    6. Lack To Proof The Travel Itinerary

An additional reason for Schengen Visa application fail, is lacking to present the proper plan of your travel within the Schengen Area. Such cases include:

    • Applying at the wrong Embassy of the Schengen Area (not being able to determine the main destination of your visit to the Schengen Area)
    • Not being able to prove to have a booked accommodation for each destination and each night to spend in the Schengen Area
    • Not being able to provide booked flight ticket for each applicant (when a group of travellers)
    • Not being able to provide travel tickets for each destination to be toured in the Schengen Area.

    7. Invalid Letter of Reference

Further evidenced reason for a failed Schengen Visa application is providing a formal letter of reference that is not authenticated by the author. Such cases involve:

    • Lacking to offer a formal letter that has an original letterhead with the address and contact details of the company or the author issuing it
    • Lacking to present a formal letter issued not later than three (3) last months from the application date
    • Missing to have the stamp and signature of the author on the formal letter
    • Other

    8. Insufficient Means Of Subsistence

One of the reasons the embassy or consulate of the Schengen country might refuse to give you a visa is lacking or insufficient proof of means of existence for the duration of stay in Schengen Area, nor for the return to home country. Such cases might involve:

    • Failing to offer financial statements not older than one (1) month from the application date
    • Lacking to enjoy a current account statement (presenting credit card statements in its place)
    • Missing to possess enough funds in financial statements presented.
    • Presenting a traveller’s cheque that does not have the candidate’s name.

    9. Unacceptable Birth Or Marriage Certificate

An additional cause for a failed Schengen Visa application is not being able to offer birth or marriage certificates that are accepted (not authenticated) by the embassy or consulate. Such cases include:

    • Failing to offer a certificate endorsed by official authorities, i.e. Ministry Interior
    • Failing to offer a certificate in non-English language translated by the authorised translator
    • Lacking to prove a civil certificate (offering a religious document instead)
    • Not being able to offer a certificate showing both parents of the child
    • Not being able to offer certificate that matches with the names of the parties presented on the submitted passports
    • Not being able to offer a document of the legal sole custody order for the child (if a single parent)
    • Not being able to offer the legal adoption documents for the adoptive child (for EU Spouse application)

    10. Invalid Travel Insurance

The other reason that might lead to a Schengen Visa application fail, is the inability to present the appropriate travel insurance coverage for the duration of stay in the Schengen Area. Such cases might involve:

    • Failing to provide a travel insurance cover in the anticipated amount
    • Lacking to provide a travel insurance that does not cover the return of the candidate in home country
    • The inability to provide a travel insurance whose policy is valid all over the Schengen Area
    • The incapacity to show a travel insurance that covers the entire days of the trip in the Schengen Area

    11. Lacking to present a Proof of Accommodation

An additional factor that might lead for your visa to be refused is not being able to properly demonstrate you have a place to stay during your travel abroad. Such cases include:

    • Not being able to present an evidence of a hotel reservation,
    • Lacking to provide the invitation from the host (proof of sponsorship),
    • Failing to present an evidence of a pre-paid tour.

    12. Unfavourable Schengen Visa Situation

What else could destroy one’s Schengen Visa application is earlier history with the Schengen Visa. Such cases include:

    • Failing to previously respect Schengen Visa limitations (i.e. Overstay in the Schengen Area, failing to follow the presented travel itinerary – by skipping to stay mostly in the main country of destination in the Schengen Area, and so on).
    • Holding a passport with an active Schengen Visa.

    Top rules for sophisticated guys

    1. Your belt should match your shoes.

    2. If you are wearing a black suit, wear black shoes.

    3. If you are wearing gray, blue, tan or a combination thereof, please use brown shoes.

    4. Get a haircut regularly. Don’t wait until everyone around you knows you need one.

    5. Never go out without a wristwatch.

6- If you want a thinner and smarter look, go for vertical-striped shirts.

7- You should have at least three suits in your wardrobe.

8- Your tie should cover your collar button down to your top trouser button. Anything longer or shorter makes you look awkward or like a village headmaster.

9- Have at least one pair of dress shoes.

10- Wear slippers only at home and the beach. Never leave your house with slippers, not even to see someone off.

11- If you want to use a tie, use it properly. Avoid wearing a tie with an untucked shirt or wearing a tucked shirt with a slightly loosened tie.

12- Never match blazers with dress trousers.

13- Do not leave your house with wrinkled clothes, it doesn’t speak good of you no matter the explanation you have for it.

14- Match your belt to your belt loops. Don’t wear a thin dress belt with trousers that have big belt loops.

15- Always have an elegant pen with you. It helps you look sophisticated and ready.

16- Have lots of white shirts because white shirts make you look like a boss.

17- Wear simple t-shirts without a photo or write-up on it. They make you look, mature, simple but sophisticated.

18- Your trousers are too short if you can see your socks as you walk. Your trousers should end just at the top of your shoes.
