  • Five key ways to survive during economic crisis

Five key ways to survive during economic crisis

The high cost of living has plunged Nigeria into an economic crisis. However, the prospect of something expensive and beyond your control happening becomes less threatening if you’re properly prepared.

Here are the five steps for how to deal with an economic crisis:

    1. Prepare to minimise your monthly bills

You might not have to do it now but be ready to start cutting out anything that is not a necessity. If you can get your recurring monthly expenses as low as they can be, you’ll have less difficulty paying your bills when money is tight.

    2. Make a budgetIf you don’t know exactly how much money you have coming in and going out each month, you won’t know how much money you need for your emergency fund. And if you aren’t keeping a budget, you also have no idea whether you’re currently living below your means or overextending yourself. A budget is not a parent—it can’t and won’t force you to change your behavior—but it is a useful tool that can help you decide if you’re happy with where your money is going and where you stand financially.

    3. Look for ways to earn extra  cash
Everyone has something they can do to earn extra money, whether it’s selling possessions you no longer use (either online or in a garage sale), babysitting, chasing credit card and bank account opening bonuses, freelancing, or getting a second job. The money you earn from these activities may seem insignificant compared to what you earn at your primary job, but even small amounts can add up to something meaningful over time. Besides, many of these activities have side benefits: You might end up with a less cluttered house or discover that you enjoy your side job enough to make it your career. Now’s the time to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

    4. Live within your means
If you make it a habit to live within your means each and every day during the good times, you are less likely to go into debt when gas or food prices go up and more likely to adjust your spending in other areas to compensate.

    5. Invest for the long term
So what if a drop in the market brings your investments down 15%? If you don’t sell, you won’t lose anything. The market is cyclical, and in the long run, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to sell high. In fact, if you buy when the market’s down, you might thank yourself later.

  • Five defunct political parties in Nigeria

Five defunct political parties in Nigeria

In Nigeria’s political history, a number of political parties have emerged and become defunct for various reasons. Some of these defunct political parties have left a mark on the country’s political landscape, contributing to its democratic evolution and shaping the socio-political narrative while showcasing the diversity of ideologies, interests, and aspirations within the nation.

Here are popular political parties that no longer exist in Nigeria:

    1. Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN)

Founded in 2006, It merged into the now All Progressives Congress after it was dissolved in 2013.

The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), formerly known as Action Congress (AC), was a political party formed from the merger of a faction of Alliance for Democracy, the Justice Party, the Advance Congress of Democrats, and several other minor political parties in September 2006.

The party, which was controlled in Lagos, was regarded as a natural successor to the progressive politics more closely associated with the Action Group and Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) led by Chief Obafemi Awolowo in the First and Second Republics respectively.

The party had a strong presence in the South West (5 Governors, 15 Senators and 6 State Houses), Mid-West (1 Governor) and North Central Regions (3 Senators). Lagos, Edo, Ekiti, Kogi, Ondo, Bauchi, Plateau, Niger, Adamawa, Oyo and Osun states by far accounts for the majority of the party’s presence.

    2. Action Group (AG)

Founded in 1951, the Action Group was a dominant political party in Western Nigeria led by Chief Obafemi Awolowo. The party advocated for regional autonomy and social welfare programs. However, internal power struggles and the Nigerian First Republic’s collapse led to the party’s demise in 1966.

    3. Alliance for Democracy (AD)

The Alliance for Democracy, formed in 1998, was a progressive opposition political party in Nigeria.

According to Nigerian Scholars, The party was embroiled in a leadership tussle between Mojisola Akinfenwa and Adebisi Akande, which lingered until September 2006 when the ‘Bisi Akande faction merged with other opposition parties to form the Action Congress party.

    4. All People’s Party (APP)

The All People’s Party(APP) was formed in 1998 with most of its support coming from the middle belt and parts of the northern region.

The APP, however, in 2003 became the All Nigeria People’s Party which is also now defunct.

    5. Nigerian National Democratic Party (NNPP)

NNPP was the country’s first political party formed in 1923 by Herbert Macaulay.

The party, which was adopted in 1964 by Samuel Akintola for his party as part of a process of unseating the left-leaning Action Group led by Obafemi Awolowo from power in the Western Region, was formed to take advantage of the new Clifford Constitution, which succeeded the 1914 Nigerian Council.

These defunct political parties left marks on Nigeria’s political history, showcasing how the democratic journey, challenges, and aspirations of the country has evolved. Although they may no longer exist, their legacies continue to influence some of the political discourse as well as shape the quest for the social progress of the country.

  • Six ways to survive heat, scorching weather in Nigeria

Six ways to survive heat, scorching weather in Nigeria

This season, Nigerians are experiencing heatwave, causing millions of people to suffer through scorching heat.

The situation is made even worse by erratic power supply across the country.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) defines heat waves as a period of prolonged, excessively hot weather that is often accompanied by high humidity.

Heatwaves are becoming more frequent and severe because of climate change.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) predicted a prolonged heatwave across the country in the coming days.

NiMet had predicted that: “Air temperatures hit 41°C over the North and 39°C over the South with model Projections indicating temperatures to remain high in the coming days.”

The agency warned that the high level of heat can cause dehydration, heat-related illness and respiratory issues, among other chronic conditions.

Dehydration could also cause fainting, chicken pox disease, measles, heat rash, weakness of the body, slight fever, dry lips, heat-related illnesses, respiratory issues, and increased vulnerability to chronic conditions.

Several studies have shown that heat could also lead to preterm birth and stillbirth for pregnant women exposed to extreme heat.

Some of the signs to look out for include:

    – Dry lips

    – Excessive thirst

    – Excessive sweating

    – Dehydration

    – Weakness

    – Nausea

    – Small blisters

    – Heat rashes

    – Mild fever

    – Nosebleeds

    – Rapid heartbeat and breathing

    – Cramps, usually in the arms and legs

    – Confusion

    – Fainting

Here are the ways to survive this period:

    – Take adequate fluid – Staying hydrated in hot weather is paramount to staying healthy. Drink at least three litres of water daily to hydrate yourself.

    – Wear light, breathable clothing to reduce exposure to high temperatures – Overdressing in the heat can make you hot faster; choose light or loose cotton clothes to help reduce heat rashes and absorb sweating.

    – Avoid strenuous physical activity during peak heat hours — Stay indoors as much as possible between 12:00 noon and 4:00 pm evening time.

Read Also: I’ve never won any of the serious awards in Nigeria – Deyemi Okanlawon

    – Take cold baths – For adults, a cold bath in hot weather would help reduce blood flow to the skin and, in turn, simmer down body temperature.

    – Seek shade – Shade can play an important role in reducing the overall heat load on the human body during extreme heat by providing relief from the direct heat of the sun. When we are exposed to the sun, the heat from the sun’s rays can directly heat up our skin and increase our body temperature.

When we are in the shade, we are protected from the direct heat of the sun, which can help to reduce our body temperature and lower the overall heat load on our body.

    – Use fans – Air-conditioning is an unaffordable luxury for most here, so people generally rely on fans. Fans will help reduce the effect of sweating profusely.

Eight countries that don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day, celebrated on February 14 of every year, is just around the corner. February has long been recognised as the month of love as Valentine’s Day is widely observed annually on the 14th of this month. In many countries, people celebrate this occasion to tell their loved ones how they feel through beautiful flowers and gifts.

On the other hand, many Eastern countries choose not to celebrate Valentine’s Day because of different religious beliefs.

Here are the countries that don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day

    1. Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan is well known for its long history and diverse culture with Islam as the dominant religion. The country was tolerant of Valentine’s Day celebrations for many years until 2012 when an internal decree that bans the celebration of this holiday was issued by the Ministry of Education’s Department of Enlightenment and the Promotion of Values.

Instead of observing Valentine’s Day, people in Uzbekistan celebrate the birthday of their country’s hero – Babur – a Mughal Emperor. Valentine’s Day is not illegal, but it is strongly discouraged in favour of commemorating Babur.

    2. Iran

In recent years, Iranian authorities have aimed to forbid Valentine’s celebrations, calling the holiday a “decadent Western custom” and threatening shops and restaurants with prosecution if they sell Valentine’s Day gifts.

Despite this, numerous restaurants in Tehran have reported been fully booked and many shops have been seen selling teddy bears and chocolates. Because they are defying the law, establishments use lookouts to see if inspectors are on a Valentine’s Day patrol.

    3. Malaysia

Malaysia is a federal, constitutional monarchy in Southeast Asia, divided by the South China Sea into two regions. The constitution grants freedom of religion, but it is a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural country, the population of which is approximately 60 percent Muslim. The capital is Kuala Lumpur.

Since 2005, the celebration of Valentine’s Day has been banned. The Malaysian Islamic Development Department blames the holiday for everything from abortion to alcohol and takes the stance that it is a link of negative ills that can invite disaster and moral decay among youth. There is even an annual anti-Valentine’s Day campaign to reinforce the view. Anybody going out and celebrating does so at their own risk, including arrests.

     4. Indonesia

No law expressly prohibits the celebration of the day in Indonesia. However, in some areas of the country such as Surabaya and Makassar where people have more radical Muslim views, intimidation tactics or small-scale bans are used while in Bando Aceh, there is an outright ban.

    5. Saudi Arabia

In Saudi Arabia, conservative officials strictly impose the ban on the holiday. Selling roses, red products and love-themed cards are banned in advance of February 14. The phenomenon has led to the creation of a black market of Valentine’s day products.

    6. Pakistan

Pakistan is another country that has mixed feelings about Valentine’s Day. Pakistan has been subject to numerous riots surrounding the celebration of Valentine’s Day. In 2014, two universities in Peshawar and Pakistan clashed with each other’s beliefs over the ideology of Valentine’s Day in the eyes of Islamic Law.

Students threw rocks at one another, which eventually led to gunshots being fired from both sides, injuring three students, according to Wedded Wonderland.

A private citizen petitioned the High Court in Islamabad to have the day banned. Finally, on February 7th, 2018, the Islamabad High Court banned Valentine’s Day celebrations and media coverage, claiming that it was a Western cultural import that contradicted Islamic teachings. Not everyone in Pakistan agrees with this decision, especially university students and flower vendors who did well on Valentine’s Day.

    7. India

Owing to its independent revolution from the British empire in 1947, the Indian government refused to advocate Western values and culture.

In 2015, party leader Chandra Prakash Kaushik told The Times of India “We are not against love, but if a couple is in love then they must get married … if they are not certain, they should not belittle love by openly going around together.”

    8. Russia

Technically, Russia does celebrate a type of Valentine’s Day, but it is very different from the traditional holiday. On March 8, Russians celebrate International Women’s Day in much the same way that Western cultures celebrate Valentine’s Day.

Gifting each other flowers and chocolate is very common on this day, as is expecting husbands and boyfriends to do all the cooking and cleaning, letting women have a full day of rest.

Instead of celebrating Valentine’s Day because of a saint, Russia chooses to celebrate the love for their women, paying tribute to women across the globe and equal rights, according to Wedded Wonderland’s report.
