    By Oladeji Adeola

Smoothies are thick, creamy beverages usually blended from puréed fruits, vegetables, juices, yogurt, nuts, seeds and/or dairy or nondairy milk. Smoothies are made by blending fruits, vegetables, yogurt and other ingredients to make a thick creamy beverage.

Wikipedia defines smoothie as a drink made from puréed (blended) raw fruit or vegetables, using a blender. A smoothie often has a liquid base such as fruit juice, dairy products, such as milk, yogurt, ice cream or cottage cheese. Protein powders, sweeteners or ice cream contributes to the flavor of the smoothie.

Fruits like carrots, strawberries and blueberries and vegetables like kale, celery and spinach, for example, helps to aid digestion.

    4. SINCE ITS IN LIQUID FORM, IT MAKES TAKING FRUITS EASIER: It helps to boost fruit and vegetable intake. The World Health Organization(WHO) recommends that adults eat at least five(5) servings (around 400grams) of fruits and vegetables per day. So drinking smoothies increase your consumption of fruits and vegetable.

    5. REGULATES THE EXCRETORY SYSTEM: Upset bowels is a common problem people suffer from. A good amount of fibrous food is essential for regulating the excretory system. Smoothies with lots of fruits and vegetables help keep your bowels functioning smoothly.

    6. BOOSTS IMMUNITY: immunity refers to the ability of your body to fight against pathogens and diseases. Fruits and vegetables are a great source of nutrients and antioxidants for good health but some are proven to increase your immunity. For example, fruits like grapes, berries and sweet potatoes are natural sources of antioxidants.

    7. DETOXIFIES THE BODY: smoothies contain so many nutritious ingredients, they can be a great way to detox your system and get rid of toxins. And because you won’t be snacking, you won’t be putting lots of toxins into your body either. Fruits such as garlic, papaya and beets help to detox. They can help to cleanse your blood and help the liver to get rid of toxins more efficiently.

    8. BETTER SLEEP: With the right ingredients, smoothies can help you to get a good night’s sleep. Fruits that aids sleep include kiwis and bananas. You can include oats as well in your smoothies as they contain magnesium and calcium, which studies have shown to be beneficial for superior sleep.

  • 10 ways to prevent kidney failure

10 ways to prevent kidney failure

    By Samuel Oamen

Kidney failure occurs when your kidneys stop working and can no longer do their job. Your kidneys filter waste and extra fluid out of your blood so they can be removed from your body through urine.

If you think you might have kidney disease, it’s important to see your doctor for evaluation. Getting an early diagnosis and treatment can help slow the progression to kidney failure.

Here are tips for preventing kidney failure:

    1. High blood pressure and diabetes are the most common causes of kidney failure. Many of the prevention tips are related to managing these two conditions.

    i. Manage your blood sugar

Diabetes increases your risk for heart disease and kidney failure. That’s just one reason to manage your blood sugar.

    ii. Manage your blood pressure

High blood pressure can increase your risk for heart disease as well as kidney failure.

    2. Maintain a healthy weight

Obesity can increase your risk for conditions associated with kidney failure, such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

    3. Eat a heart-healthy diet

A heart-healthy diet — one low in sugar and cholesterol and high in fiber, whole grains, and fruits and vegetables — helps prevent weight gain.

    4. Reduce salt intake

Eating too much of salt is associated with high blood pressure.

    5. Drink enough water

Dehydration reduces blood flow to your kidneys, which can damage them. Ask your doctor how much water you should drink per day.

    6. Limit alcohol

Alcohol increases your blood pressure. The extra calories in it can make you gain weight, too.

    7. Don’t smoke

Smoking reduces blood flow to your kidneys. It damages kidney function in people with or without kidney disease.

    8. Limit over-the-counter pain medication

In high doses, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen, reduce the amount of blood flow to your kidneys, which can harm them.

    9. Reduce stress

Reducing stress and anxiety can lower your blood pressure, which is good for your kidneys.

    10. Exercise regularly

Exercises such as swimming, walking, and running, can help reduce stress, manage diabetes and high blood pressure, and maintain a healthy weight.

  • Five mistakes you make while charging your phone

Five mistakes you make while charging your phone

    Our Reporter

Many phone users tend to complain that their device’s batteries discharge quickly. They also typically blame the product manufacturer for this issue; however, the manufacturer isn’t always at fault. Here are some five mistakes that users typically make when charging their phones.

Waiting for the Battery to reach low levels before charging

Avoid waiting for your battery to reach a critically low level before charging. The effect of this on your phone battery is not immediate, but over time it begins to manifest and it eventually stresses out your phone battery (yes, batteries get stressed too) and shortens the battery life. Think of your battery as a human body, you really don’t need to wait until you’re about to die before you rest and eat to recharge yourself.

Keeping your phone case on while charging

Your phone typically emits heat when charging. To avoid exposing your device to ambient temperatures, it’s advisable to remove the phone case while charging your phone so that the heat emitted from your phone while charging can escape. This way you can prevent your device from becoming hotter and potentially overheating when charging. Charging your battery at uncomfortable temperatures can permanently damage battery capacity.

Charging your phone in the wrong places

You should mind where you charge your phone, because not doing so can negatively affect your battery capacity. Phones have a temperature range they can function normally and charging your phone in a hot area can raise the temperature and stress the battery out. Also, charging your phone in especially low temperature areas, like in front of an air conditioner, can also cause problems for your battery that will eventually affect its optimum performance.

    Charging your phone overnight

The least you’ll sleep throughout the night is most likely going to be between 5 to 8 hours, your smartphone battery typically only needs 2 to 3 hours to fully charge. Charging your phone overnight, constantly stresses your phone battery each night. Sooner than later, your phone is likely to have battery problems. In addition, the temperature rises when the battery is overcharged, so apart from shortening battery life, it can also threaten user’s safety in the event it quickly heats up and explodes. It’s better to charge your phone before you sleep and switch it off while sleeping to preserve the battery till the next day.

    Plugging whatever charger fits

This especially applies to smartphones. Most smartphones use a micro USB for its chargers and for this reasons most people tend to switch and swap chargers since it fits into and works on their phones. However, this is not appropriate and in the long run it can negatively affect your phone battery. The fact that most smartphones have the same micro USB doesn’t mean all chargers and phones are compatible. Some chargers function differently and that difference can be detrimental to your device if care is not taken.
