  • ‘Why Moro LGA may not be part of ‘Kwara North Agenda’ for 2027′

‘Why Moro LGA may not be part of ‘Kwara North Agenda’ for 2027′

As the agitations continue towards elective positions in Kwara, different groups have begun to show interest in different positions while alignments and realignments are going on side by side. A doctor of Veterinary Medicine and a stakeholder from Kwara North, Moro LGA axis, Dr. Abolaji Afolabi, bares his mind on views of his people in this interview with Sam Anokam. Afolabi who also holds a postgraduate certificate in public health, is president/CEO of Bolaniks Consult Nigeria Limited, a food security/safety and public health consultancy outfit in Ilorin.

YOU once described yourself as a professional in politics, what does that mean?

I am a professional in my field; I am in politics only to contribute my quota to national development as a patriot; also to my state and by extension, my people at the local government level. I have done well for myself in my line of duty and professionalism. Now I want to pay back to my community.

What informed your choice of party to belong?

I am not new in politics. I have always been a technocrat in politics, a professional doing it along with my work. I am presently a member of the All Progressives Congress Party (APC). I joined APC because I see the progressives as the party to be in government. If you are a politician, you will understand that we do permutations and visualise where the pendulum swings. The then ruling party lost face, especially the PDP government in Kwara. Do you remember the Oto gee movement? I was an active part of the movement that brought about the victory we are enjoying in Kwara today.

You are eminently educated, why are you not holding a political office?

Holding a political office is not the  only way to be an active member of a government. My party, the APC, is in government both in Kwara State and at the federal level. As a major stakeholder of the APC in Kwara State, there are always channels by which people like me can have access to contribute to the effective running of government, either at the state or federal level.

Don’t you think you would make a better impact if you were part of the executives in power?

You are right, but mind you, all of us cannot be in executive positions. For me, I like taking things step by step. I can still be called upon anytime as long as our party remains relevant and in power. As a matter of fact, I may soon take that step to contest a higher elective position; but for now building up for 2027 on how an elective position will come to my zone in Kwara North.

Speculatively, Kwara North is settled about having the governorship ticket come 2027. It is also on record that the deputy chairman of the APC in Kwara said that the issue of governorship coming to Kwara North had been settled by you people.

(Cuts in) That is where the problem lies. In APC there is no zoning; thus the site is open to all the zones. So we’ll all need to sit down in Kwara North and talk to issues on ground. Kwara North is made up of five local governments and four major tribes. We have Baruteen, Kaiama, Patigi, Edu and Moro local government areas. Baruteen and Kaiama are Bartonu and bokobaru speaking people; Patigi and Edu are Nupe while Moro is Yoruba speaking. Incidentally, Moro, despite being highly populated, is marginalised.

    Marginalised by who?

By the rest of us in Kwara North. If not, this issue of positions coming up ought to be discussed between us all; but only the other two tribes sat to discuss as alleged. There was never a platform or space where a meeting was held and we concluded on which post goes to which area. We have a governorship slot, we have a Senatorial seat and a House of Representative seat; how these seats are shared among all the three tribes is a factor that will either make us have the governorship or lose it.

Read Also: Adeleke commends Tinubu, Ribadu for busting terror cells in Osun

Is that a threat to the other tribes in the Kwara North?

It’s not about a threat but the reality. You don’t shave someone’s head in his absence. How can someone say, ‘we all in Kwara North agreed to a thing’ when nobody agreed over anything. How does that sound?

But politics is about numbers; will such an arrangement as described by you be seen as democracy?

This is part of political consultations, we need to marry interests, place all options and opportunities on the table and be equitable about it. This is to make us to be on the same page as a zone on the issue and allow us to move together to lobby the other two zones for a seat because all of us are entitled to it.

So how do you want the positions shared in the interest of peace and success of the party?

When we get to the bridge, we shall cross it. And that bridge is a meeting of all representatives of the four tribes and interests that are in the Zone. It will be progressively just and fair if the Yoruba, Nupe Bartonu and Boko people get adequately represented in the scheme of things. It will be most unfair if major tribes in Kwara marginalise Kwara North, and within our enclave we are also marginalising ourselves. It would be the most unfair thing to do to our people but only a roundtable discussion would guarantee success. From 1999 to date, all the other four local government areas have each produced a senator and House of Representative members, except Moro, a Yoruba speaking.  Presently, Kaiama LGA has the Senatorial seat, Baruteen, Edu/Patigi also has a House of Representatives while we don’t have anything from Moro LGA. This is not acceptable to us.

This arrangement is within your party, the APC; do you know what other opposition parties are planning? How prepared are you?

Definitely, every other serious-minded politician and political party must be strategizing and having permutations on where their flag bearer would come from. Some will work to counter our own plans; some will be outright against our plans. What matters most is that as we are getting closer to 2027, all hands from Kwara North must be on deck to ensure we get the governorship ticket and ensure the party wins and Kwara North also wins.

Rounding off, what’s your message to your people?

It’s simple, for now Kwara North as it stands is most disunited. We are not yet united on the issue of governorship for Kwara North but we can still be united.  Let us sit at a roundtable to fashion out how the various available seats would be shared within us. That’s the only way we can unite over the Governorship seat coming to Kwara North.

  • 2026 guber: Why Osun yearns for AMBO

2026 guber: Why Osun yearns for AMBO

    • By Lanre Olasunkanmi

Of all the contenders for the Osun governorship seat in the upcoming off-cycle election, slated for August 8, 2026, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji (AMBO) stands out as a model of good governance, having been tested and trusted over time. The Ìkirè, Osun State-born finance-expert-turned-politician is a technocrat of no mean repute, with a track record of excellence in both private and public sectors spanning decades.

Permit me to mention in passing that Oyebamiji is one person in whose veins flows freely the milk of kindness. He is a towering influence whose posture sees to the joy and fulfillment of others, even as a private individual. Investigations revealed that, within his Ikire ancestral source in particular, and throughout the length and breadth of Nigeria in general, AMBO has influenced so many lives that should earn him high electoral value. The ace politician is one who derives joy in seeing others, especially the less-privileged and downtrodden, smile. His empowerment and human improvement programmes and mass welfare packages are broad-based.

Oyebamiji’s efforts to improve the lives of the people of Osun are well-justified. Having been an integral part of two consecutive administrations, he has had a significant and positive influence on the lives of the people. With a clear track record as the longest-serving Commissioner for Finance in the state, he laid the foundation for a higher internally generated revenue (IGR), which helped shake off the long-standing stigma of Osun being viewed as a ‘civil service state’.

The state that was formerly stereotyped as dependent solely on the monthly statutory allocations from the Federation Accounts now proudly earns tens of billions of revenue monthly from its own means. Kudos to the efforts spearheaded by Oyebamiji and his bosses during his tenure as Finance Commissioner. It was his counsel that helped restore the profiles of workers from modulated scales to full status, and his tenure marked the very best in terms of workers’ welfare in the state.

During his time in office, he successfully cleared the backlog of pensions and gratuities owed to retirees from before November 2010. He also kept up with the growing needs of both retired and active workers. For example, he addressed the large number of employees who retired around 2012. Thanks to his and his administration’s leadership, worker welfare was fully met without neglecting the state’s infrastructural development.

As the state’s finance commissioner, he oversaw the systematic payment of backlogged pensions and other financial commitments through a bond-based, staggered payment plan. This strategy successfully alleviated the state’s debt burden and provided financial stability to beneficiaries facing economic uncertainty. Under his leadership, and across the administrations he served, a robust road network was developed. This infrastructure was crucial for connecting rural, food-producing communities to markets, demonstrating a proactive commitment to rural development that complemented federal projects like the Rural Access Mobility Project (RAMP).

Again, permit me to return to the afore-cited revenue-generation outlook of the state under Oyebamiji’s finance superintendence. It was Oyebamiji’s era that provided proper oversight and accountability for mineral exploration and resource conservation. In terms of mining and forest resources utilization, the Rauf Aregbesola and Gboyega Oyètólá administration saw significant improvements in Osun’s revenue status – making it ‘Better By Far’.

Prior to the arrival of the progressive governments, Osun – historically the commercial center of the South-West – had experienced a period of economic decline. As a key figure, Oyebamiji helped the administration revitalize the state’s commercial sector by overhauling its markets and introducing new trade and commerce strategies. His tenure is also notable for the creation of organized cooperatives and the provision of interest-free loans and other financial aid to local traders and small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The administrations in which AMBO served provided extensive support to vulnerable groups, such as women, youths, the elderly, and widows. This was achieved through the formation of clusters for loans and credits, targeted intervention training, skill acquisition programmes, welfare packages, and rehabilitation initiatives. These efforts established Osun as a model state in Nigeria, with its welfare initiatives for the needy being used as a reference database by the Federal Government and international organizations seeking to replicate the state’s success nationwide.

The Oyetola administration’s intervention efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic were a major undertaking that required strategic financial leadership. As the state’s finance arrowhead, Oyebamiji was instrumental in ensuring the success of these critical initiatives.

Oyebamiji is a giant in public administration and a politician with a human face. A true lover of his people, he is the best choice to uplift Osun State to the heights it deserves. Supporting him will bring the high-level progress and development the state has long sought.

The road to the Osun governorship election is not as long and stretchy as it may appear. By late November/early December this year, political parties should be getting through with selecting the most marketable candidate to slug it out for them in the upcoming contest for the soul of Osun. The APC is not an exception in this regard. Instructively, in this dimension, the state’s chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will do well to organize well its arsenals and sit up to the onerous task of making the right selection that will serve the party in proper stead at the polls.

The party appears to have a wide array of choices. However, only one contender represents a viable path to victory; the others, whether considered individually or collectively, are little more than a diversion.

From the foregoing, AMBO is clearly the real choice the party should embrace, being the most widely acceptable man for the job. Up to this point, lots have happened across the state. State-wide familiarization-cum-consultation tours embarked upon by aspirants have brought to fore who could move mountains and whose statue could move the spirits amongst the teeming aspirants.

Against this background, the instructive nature of making the right choice at party level points to who the people pitch their tent with when the time is ripe to separate men from boys. Oyebamiji track record – career-wise, in public office, and his stout political personality – should speak loud above all possible sentiments. APC should choose right. The time is now. The entire Osun electorate will pick their proper cues from there in the fullness of time.

Speaking at the meetings, Ogundoyin conveyed the message of Governor Seyi Makinde, emphasising that the PDP remains one united family in Oyo State and particularly in Ibarapa East.

He assured party faithful that there would be no division, no parallel congresses, no parallel lists, and no imposition of candidates in the build-up to the next political season in the Local Government.

“The message from His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde, is very clear. PDP is one. We are united in purpose and we will work together to win all upcoming elections. Candidates will emerge through consensus, not imposition,” he said.

Enugu re-run: APC lauds Nnaji for defending democracy

The Enugu chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has applauded Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, for what it described as his courageous role in defending democracy during the just-concluded Enugu South 1 Constituency re-run election.

In a statement at the weekend by Enugu APC chairman, Barr. Ugochukwu Agballah, the party said the Minister’s presence at the election venue helped to thwart alleged moves by vested political interests to manipulate the exercise.

“The courage displayed by Chief Uche Nnaji on that day reassured the people that democracy can be protected when men of goodwill stand firm,” Agballah said.

The APC also congratulated the Labour Party (LP) candidate, Barr. Bright Ngene, who was declared winner of the re-run by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Ngene, serving a prison sentence over an alleged community fund scandal, polled 5,862 votes against his closest rival, PDP’s Sam Ngene, who scored 2,000.

INEC, in a statement by its National Commissioner, Sam Olumekun, confirmed that after disruptions in earlier attempts, the election was finally concluded in the affected eight polling units with 4,616 registered voters, clearing the way for Ngene’s return.

Agballah commended other political figures who stood their ground to ensure the will of the people prevailed, including LP’s Senator Kelvin Chukwu, APC lawmakers Hon. Chimobi Atu and Hon. Paul Nnamchi, and executives of both APC and LP at the state and local levels.

He described the outcome as “a signal that Enugu people will no longer tolerate election rigging,” recalling his own past experiences of alleged manipulation in 2003 and 2007.

“The Labour Party won the 2023 governorship election in this state but was rigged out. The only way to protect the people’s mandate is for all parties to stand together as we saw in Enugu South,” Agballah said.

While assuring Ngene of APC’s continued support both in securing his mandate and in his legal battle for freedom, Agballah urged PDP’s candidate, Sam Ngene, to show statesmanship by accepting the outcome.

“You fought gallantly, but as a Christian and leader, you should congratulate your brother and move on. Tomorrow still holds promise for you,” he advised.

Observers note that Ngene’s imprisonment remains controversial, with many insisting it is politically motivated and tied to the long-drawn battle for the Enugu South seat, which had remained vacant for over two years.

Katsina Govt. urges residents to register for PVCs ahead of 2027 polls

The Special Adviser to Gov. Dikko Radda of Katsina State on Political Matters, Alhaji Ya’u Gwajo-Gwajo, has urged residents to take advantage of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

He encouraged eligible citizens to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to ensure active participation in future elections.

In a statement issued on Saturday in Katsina, Gwajo-Gwajo called on eligible citizens to take part in the voter registration process.

He specifically urged those who recently turned 18 or wish to transfer their polling units to visit the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) pre-registration portal for online registration.

He also reminded them that physical registration would begin next week at all state and local government INEC offices.

He emphasised the importance of maintaining and improving Katsina’s current position as the state with the fifth-highest number of registered voters in the country, which stood at more than 3.5 million as of January 2023.

“Katsina is the third most populous state in Nigeria. Therefore, we should also aim to rank third in registered voters.

“This can only be achieved if all adults 18 years and above participate in the CVR,” he said.

Citing INEC data, Gwajo-Gwajo noted that more than 505,000 people had registered nationwide within just five days of the ongoing exercise, reflecting growing public interest and INEC’s effort to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral process.

He urged political office holders, civil society organisations, traditional rulers, the media, and all relevant stakeholders to create awareness and mobilise citizens for the exercise.

He also advised those who already had valid PVCs not to register again to avoid duplication.

2026: Australia-based medical doctor joins Ekiti governorship race

An Australia-based medical consultant, Dr. Wole Oluyede, has formally declared his intentions to contest for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) ticket in the June 20, 2026 governorship election in Ekiti State.

Oluyede, who declared his intentions in

his ward at Ugele Aroku, Ikere Ekiti, Ikere local government area of the state, said he possesses the intellectual prowess, competence and pedigree to function as governor.

Oluyede, who defected to the PDP from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) where he was the party’s governorship candidate in 2022, said that he joined the governorship race because of his desire to improve the lives of Ekiti people and engender socio-economic development.

The PDP chieftain added that he would prioritize industrialization, infrastructure, healthcare, agriculture, education, rural development and job creation if elected.

He condemned the weak infrastructural development in the state, promising to leverage on his avalanche of both local and international connections to make Ekiti epicenter of development.

He decried the alleged deplorable states of roads across the state, stating the incumbent government under Governor Biodun Oyebanji has not put any physical structure in place to make transportation easy for its residents.

He said, “Oyebanji has tried, but we’ll send him back to Ikogosi. I’ve always said one thing, the only reason Wole Oluyede will run for office in Ekiti is because nothing works. Can anybody truly say their lives are better today than they were four years ago? I don’t know anybody who can say that.

Read Also: Ekiti 2026: Oyebanji cautions aides against fraternising with opponents, threatens sanctions

“Four years ago, the roads were better. People were happier. Their lives were better but what have we had? Four wasted years. That is the only reason I’m running, to make life better for our people.

“This is my homestead. The first time I came here was in 1970. I was about seven years old then and sadly, I can’t see any real change since then. Nobody has even changed their rooftops. That is how bad it is.

“There’s no running water, no tarred roads. Houses are collapsing, is that what we call growth? Is that a sign of progress? That is why I am running and I will keep running until things get better”, he added.

Oluyede called on Governor Oyebanji to start preparing his handover note, saying the PDP is irrevocably ready to dislodge the APC from Oke Ayoba government come 2026.

He urged the party members and Ikere Ekiti residents to get their Voter’s card, describing it as the only weapon to fight against political dispensation in the state and kick them out of power.

“PDP is very much alive in Ekiti state. I remember some people saying a few months ago that PDP is dead. Does it look like a dead party now? I told them, you should be careful of a deep, sitting or moving stream, you don’t know how deep it is.

“Our party in Ekiti has no problem. The people who have left PDP are those who couldn’t find their footing. They are very few and we know them. It doesn’t shake the foundation of PDP”, he added.

Osun 2026: APC chieftain vows to deliver 100,000 votes

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, Ademola Adedapo, has pledged to secure at least 100,000 votes for the party’s governorship candidate in the 2026 election from the Iwo local government area.

Adedapo, who is also aspiring to represent Ayedire/Iwo/Ola Oluwa Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, described Iwo as an APC stronghold and urged party supporters to mobilise for the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In a statement on Wednesday, he said, “By the end of the CVR, Iwo land should have 250,000 registered voters, and I will ensure that at least 100,000 votes are delivered during the August 8, 2026, gubernatorial election.”

Adedapo stressed the importance of voter participation, calling it the most powerful tool citizens have to elect credible leaders. He urged residents, especially those who recently turned 18, to seize the opportunity to register.

“Our federal constituency is known for turning out during elections, and we must increase our numbers this time,” he added. “If we want better leadership and to rescue Osun State from the current PDP administration, we must take the bull by the horns and participate fully in the electoral process.”

2027 election: Southwest APC dismisses anti-Tinubu moves as distractions

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Southwest has described ongoing efforts by some politicians to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections as mere distractions and “comedy shows” aimed at undermining the Renewed Hope Agenda.

In recent weeks, some political actors have announced plans to form a coalition to challenge the APC at the federal level, similar to the strategy that saw the party defeat the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and oust former President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 general elections.

Reacting to the development, the APC Southwest Publicity Secretary, Mr. Ayobami Afolabi, said in a weekend statement made available to journalists that those plotting against the party are “failed politicians” with no credible ideas to move the country forward.

“They contributed to the Augean stables that the present administration is cleaning up. They have nothing new to offer Nigeria and Nigerians,” Afolabi stated, adding that the party remains focused on delivering on its promises under President Tinubu’s leadership.

“It is obvious that those behind the ill-conceived coalition against the Tinubu administration ahead of the 2027 presidential election are people who should be remorseful on account of their individual or collective contributions to the socio-economic and political challenges which the country is now struggling to overcome.

These are former vice presidents, governors, ministers, top political appointees and heads of MDAs whose scorecards are nothing to write home about, and they still want to return to power.

“As a matter of fact, this set of people know that President Bola Tinubu is doing well, but the spirit of self-entitlement, self-aggrandisement and insincerity in them would always get the better of them.

“Fortunately, most Nigerians have come to realise that President Tinubu has come to put the country on the right track of prosperity, stability and sustainable growth as evident in the bold steps which he has been taking to fix the country.

“However, it is still not late for the sponsors of the alliance against Tinubu to realize the errors in their anti-people activities since it is certain that they cannot succeed in their mission going by the small sample which voters showed them in the recent by-elections conducted across 12 states in which the APC had more than 75 per cent of the total numbers of state and federal legislative seats contested.

“Our dear President cannot be distracted as he is poised to succeed in his mission beyond 2027,” Afolabi added.
