    Ambode denies ADC defection rumours

Former Lagos Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has reaffirmed loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC), pledging full support for the President’s 2027 re-election bid.

In a statement on Saturday, Ambode dismissed reports linking him to a governorship ambition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing them as “false publications” intended to cause distractions.

“I wish to publicly reaffirm my absolute and unshakable loyalty to the APC, the party under which I had the privilege of serving Lagos State as governor in 2015, and to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, my leader, mentor, and a tireless champion for Nigeria’s progress,” Ambode said.

The former Governor lauded Tinubu as a “proven achiever and result-oriented leader” whose administration has implemented reforms in pensions, student loans, youth empowerment, and economic growth. He also credited the President with eliminating fuel scarcity, enhancing security, and introducing policies to improve the lives of Nigerians.

“His focus, determination, and inclusive governance style are restoring hope and delivering tangible results. I am convinced that, given another four years, Nigerians will have even greater reason to celebrate,” Ambode stated.

He urged party members and Nigerians to ignore distractions and remain committed to the APC’s success.

“Let it be clear: I stand solidly with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress. We will work together to ensure victory in 2027 to continue delivering the dividends of democracy to all Nigerians,” Ambode concluded.

  • Ogun govt threatening to demolish my private residence, others, Daniel cries out

Ogun govt threatening to demolish my private residence, others, Daniel cries out

Former Governor Senator Gbenga Daniel on Saturday raised the alarm that Governor Dapo Abiodun – led State Government has marked Asoludero Court, his private residence built in 2004 in Sagamu for demolition for allegedly contravening building regulations.

Daniel, who represents Ogun East in the 10th National Assembly, also named  Conference Hotel Sagamu built in 2013 and the Annex erected since 2015 as his other properties designated for demolition.

The structures located in Government Reservation Area (GRA) Sagamu, according to the notices were constructed without permit and adequate setback among other contraventions.

The Nation report that days after Senator Ibikunle Amosun came to power in 2011, his administration also threatened to bring those structures down for alleged contravention.

In a statement on Saturday through Steve Oliyide of the Otunba Gbenga Daniel Media Office, the former Governor described the latest step by the State Government as “political persecution” on the watch of Abiodun.

He revealed that at about 4pm on Friday, some people claiming to be agents of the government of Ogun State posted “Notices of Contravention, Quit and threats of demolition” on his residential and commercial properties in Sagamu.

Noting that the action is not an isolated incident, he alleged the latest act of persecution followed a similar pattern of illegal demolitions allegedly carried out by Abiodun’s administration, citing demolition of DATKEM Plaza Ijebu Ode, a property belonging to his wife, Yeye Olufunke Daniel in the midnight of September, 2023 by thugs believed to be working on the orders of the Governor.

According to him: “We strongly condemn this latest act of political persecution by Governor Dapo Abiodun, as evidenced by the recent issuance of these Notices which were dated August 8, 2025, as a clear demonstration of the governor’s malicious and vindictive abuse of power, hiding behind a newly-enacted law retroactively to target a political opponent.

“The documents, concerning these properties cite “suspected” offenses related to construction without adequate permits (which is laughable). This is a ludicrous and flimsy excuse, as the properties in question have been in existence for many years. For instance, the Asoludero Court was built in 2004, while the Conference Hotel Sagamu was built in 2013, and the Annex since 2015. The governor’s administration is now attempting to use the Ogun State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law No. 61 of 2022 to demolish buildings that were legally constructed long before the law was even in existence.

“This action is not only politically motivated but also a blatant disregard for due process and the rule of law. The Notices in themselves are clear breaches of procedures which allows adequate time intervals between Notifications on contraventions, Quits and the penalties, if indeed there was any, is not a demolition or a threat of it. Governor Abiodun’s administration has completely bypassed this procedure, issuing a “Notice of Contravention” and a “Notice to Quit” simultaneously, with an immediate threat of demolition. This is not a legal process; it is a thuggish tactic designed to intimidate and inflict damage.

“It is worth noting that this is not an isolated incident. This latest act of persecution follows a similar pattern of illegal demolitions carried out by Governor Abiodun’s administration. We recall with disgust the illegal demolition of DATKEM Plaza Ijebu Ode, a property belonging to the wife of Otunba Gbenga Daniel, Yeye Olufunke Daniel in the midnight of September, 2023 by thugs believed to be working on the orders of the Governor as no government agent will be sent on such assignment at ungodly hours of the night, even on a weekend on equally flimsy excuses. The matter is currently in court, and the state has already lost several applications at the Ogun State High Court and another at the Court of Appeal in Ibadan, a clear indication that their actions lack legal merit.

“Governor Dapo Abiodun is taking political vindictiveness to a shameful and dangerous level, without any regard for extant laws or common decency. We call on all well-meaning citizens, human rights organizations, and legal bodies to stand with us in condemning this egregious abuse of power. We will not be silent in the face of this injustice and will use all legal means at our disposal to ensure that Governor Abiodun is held accountable for his lawless actions.”

However, attempts by The Nation to contact the Ogun State Urban and Regional Planning for reaction have not been successful.

  • ADC crisis: Kachikwu rejects expulsion, vows to contest 2027 presidential ticket

ADC crisis: Kachikwu rejects expulsion, vows to contest 2027 presidential ticket

…says Nwosu lacks power to expel him from party

The 2023 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dumebi Kachikwu, has dismissed claims of his expulsion from the party, insisting that former national chairman Ralph Nwosu and his National Working Committee (NWC) lack the authority to remove him.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Friday, Kachikwu declared he remains a bona fide member of the ADC and will vie for the party’s 2027 presidential ticket.

He described the newly inaugurated Senator David Mark-led interim National Executive Committee as an illegality orchestrated by a chairman whose tenure expired two years ago.

Kachikwu alleged that Nwosu and Mark’s faction forged the signatures of some state chairmen in a settlement agreement as part of a scheme to hijack the ADC’s structure in support of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s 2027 ambition.

He said the forgery matter has been reported to the relevant security agencies and accused the coalition of plotting a carefully planned takeover of the party ahead of the next general elections.

According to him, recent developments vindicate his earlier warnings about elderly former political office holders seeking to control the ADC for Atiku’s presidential bid.

“I also warned that Peter Obi and other presidential hopefuls in this coalition of geriatrics were being duped as Atiku’s men had been carefully positioned to take over the ADC party structure across the country.

“Today I have been proven right as former Governor Obi and his people now realize that this coalition is indeed a one-man power grab,” he said.

Kachikwu accused Atiku of having no belief in a southern presidency, saying, “Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, a man who claims affinity and friendship with the south does not believe any southerner deserves to be president of Nigeria. Former Presidents Obasanjo and Jonathan are alive to attest to this uncomfortable truth.”

For emphasis, he alleged fraud in a recent legal settlement involving the ADC, claiming that the signatures of some state chairmen were forged to secure favourable terms in court.

“To use the ADC they needed to free it of all legal encumbrances such as those challenging Ralph Nwosu’s fraudulent claim to the chairmanship of the party and so they forged signatures of some of the chairmen who were not interested in the sale of the party and presented it to the court as terms of settlement which the Court of Appeal adopted as judgement,” Kachikwu stated, while displaying documents and signature specimens to journalists.

He confirmed that allegations of forgery relating to recent attempts to seize control of the party are already before the authorities.

“It is something that will be prosecuted by the appropriate law enforcement authorities. Today, we have presented our position on this matter before the appropriate authorities, and it is up to them to take it up.”

The former ADC candidate also dismissed the recent inauguration of former Senate President David Mark as the new chairman of the party, saying, “We all watched almost two months ago the comedic performance of Ralph Nwosu as he anointed David Mark as chairman of the ADC and at the same time presented him with a membership card of our party.

“I again warned Nigerians that this was fraud being perpetrated in broad daylight as Nwosu had no legal mandate to anoint or appoint a chairman for our party,” he said.

Kachikwu insisted the developments were part of a wider plan to influence the 2027 polls along ethnic and religious lines.

“Atiku Abubakar and a few northern elites who have for decades held political power but did nothing to alleviate the undereducation and attendant impoverishment in northern Nigeria for political purposes are at it again.

“They have armed the weapons of region, religion, tongue, tribe and poverty as they convince millions of poor Northerners that a southern President Tinubu hates them and is the cause of their poverty,” he alleged.

He claimed that Peter Obi had been told in very clear terms that he would never get northern votes as an Igbo man and should accept to be Atiku’s running mate, adding that former President Jonathan was also being drafted into the race to weaken the South.

“Meritocracy, which can only thrive when ceteris paribus is in play, has been thrown out of the door because of a truth, ceteris paribus doesn’t exist in the Nigerian ecosystem.

“Sadly, I am now here before you championing the cause of a southern presidency, a notion that before now was totally against all I believed in. Nigeria has indeed happened to me,” he said.

On the claim that former ADC chairman Ralph Nwosu expelled him from the party, the presidential candidate dismissed the move as baseless and illegal.

“Two years ago, before I ran for the elections, the same person came and said that I was expelled from the party. I represented the party in the elections. We all saw that,” he said.

“The same person, who two Federal High Courts in Nigeria pronounced is not chairman of the party said to me that he expelled me from the party. I was a recognized flag bearer of the party. I am still a member of the party.”

“A man who is not chairman of the party, who has no legal basis, cannot say I’ve been expelled from the party. Just like someone saying, I am no longer a Nigerian. I am a Nigerian today, yesterday, and tomorrow. I am a member of ADC today, yesterday, and tomorrow.”

Despite internal turbulence, he made it clear that he intends to re-contest the party’s presidential ticket.

“There’s absolutely nothing, no power, that will stop me from contesting in the ADC primaries next year. I assure you that the people who have hijacked our party realize that they brought bad luck to us.”

On whether he has a plan B in case he fails to clinch the ADC ticket, he said:

“As I speak to you in different press briefings, you hear them referring to ADA and other alternatives that they have a plan B with. They do indeed have a plan B because they know that they have it contained within the ADC. All they are doing is making our party popular across the country.”

“We have ADC branding all over the country and we benefit from this. I assure you that in the next election, when people see the ADC logo, people will recognize the ADC logo and we will benefit from it.”

He claimed the party has lacked legitimate national leadership for two years.

“ADC, as of today, is presented with a peculiar situation. For the last two years, we haven’t had a chairman because the tenure of Ralph Nwosu expired two years ago, and since then, we’ve been unable to have a convention to produce a new NWC. This was the matter we presented before the courts. The courts upheld what was presented to them. They agreed with us.”

“The court had given us twice and adjourned until October after the initial break. And that’s when the next sitting will go. I don’t recognize him as the party chairman. He’s not the party chairman and I don’t need to discuss with him. My discussion is with our party people across the country.”

On who can legitimately convene a national convention, he said the party must now invoke a principle similar to the Doctrine of Necessity.

“Our situation is indeed very peculiar. According to what happened when late President Yar’Adua was not in the country, was very ill, and we invoked the Doctrine of Necessity to swear in the President, my party seeks such a doctrine of necessity to ensure that we keep the hope and dreams of our party alive.

“Our party must not perish under the current onslaught by brutal demons across the continent,” he added.

He also emphasized that he was waiting for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to make an official move on the status of the party’s National Executive Council since the tenure of the Nwosu-led NEC expired two years ago and the party has been unable to convoke a national convention since then to replace them

Furthermore, he said he is also exploring legal options to challenge the legitimacy of the Mark-led NEC.

He urged Nigerians to resist what he described as an inequitable political agenda, saying, “We don’t burn our houses because we want to kill rats and cockroaches; sometimes we just need to make our houses clean so that rats and cockroaches leave on their own.

“My earnest prayer is that Nigeria will soon work for every one of us”.

2027: Udim APC stakeholders back Tinubu, Akpabio, Eno

In a bold show of unity, solidarity, and loyalty, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State held an extended stakeholders’ meeting last Sunday. Essien Udim, the hometown of the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, played host to this historic gathering—the first of its kind since the defection of Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, from the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC. The governor’s defection, alongside elected officials and political appointees from the area, marked a significant political realignment in the state.

At the meeting, APC leaders praised the growing synergy between Senator Akpabio and Governor Eno, describing it as a model of collaboration that should be replicated across party structures. They encouraged party members to actively participate in the ongoing membership registration and revalidation exercise, as directed by the governor and leader of the party in the state. Commendations also poured in for the Chairman of Essien Udim LGA, Ntiedo Usoro, for his inclusive leadership and efforts in fostering unity within the party. The lawmaker representing Essien Udim State Constituency, Prince Ukpong Akpabio II, was also lauded for his effective legislative work and cooperation with the council chairman.

Among key resolutions reached, the stakeholders unanimously endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in 2027. They also called for Senator Akpabio to be returned unopposed to the Senate and endorsed Governor Eno for re-election. This motion, moved by former State Assembly Leader, Dr. Etido Ibekwe, and seconded by Prince Akpabio, was unanimously adopted through a vote conducted by Emmanuel Sunday Akpan, a former member of the House of Representatives. The high-powered gathering brought together stakeholders from all eleven wards, including current and former lawmakers, council chairmen, board members, legislative aides, party leaders, women and youth leaders.

  • Intrigues, uncertainties may alter Taraba 2027 race

Intrigues, uncertainties may alter Taraba 2027 race

The 2027 governorship poll in Taraba State would be fierce. It may be shaped by old rivalries, new alliances, and unfulfilled promises. Correspondent VICTOR GAI provides a broad view of the political dynamics

As the political atmosphere in the nation is gathering storm ahead of the all-important 2027 general elections, and with the emergence of the new political coalition as a formidable alternative force to engage the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), political pundits are beginning to calculate the strengths and weaknesses of prospective candidates for various elective positions to make necessary alignments and realignments.

This already heated national political climate is becoming even more intense in Taraba State, where there are growing calls for a better leader who will provide the required dividends of democracy to the people.

Governor Agbu Kefas, who hails from Wukari Local Government Area of Southern Taraba, the same zone as his predecessor, former Governor Darius Ishaku, assumed power with lofty promises and high expectations from the people, as he is a younger person and a pastor.

However, two years down the line, his tenure has been characterised by more promises than actions, remodelling of existing projects and renaming them after his political godfather, General TY Danjuma.

To date, the Kefas administration cannot point to a single project it initiated, completed and commissioned in the last two years. Even his supporters now describe Kefas as a person who makes promises that are never fulfilled.

His policies have created untold hardship for the people, and this may make him vulnerable during the 2027 general election.

A Taraba State chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Hassan Jika Ardo, described Kefas as a political liability to any serious political party. “This is to the extent that his power of incumbency, which is supposed to be a major advantage, counts as a stumbling block instead,” he said.

Ardo said the governor has nothing to showcase in his first two years in office. “I am aware that Governor Agbu Kefas is making moves to join the APC. This is to be expected. He is desperately strategising for political survival because he has failed and knows that the opposition would defeat him in the forthcoming general election.

“For two years, the only thing one can commend the governor about is security. Otherwise, there is no ongoing road construction, and no serious activity in the health sector. The field of education is in disarray; the free education policy was introduced without planning. So his thinking is that, once he moves to the APC, he gets an automatic ticket and would be able to secure a second tenure easily, “ Ardo stated.

Chief (Dr) David Sabo Kente, who is eyeing the APC ticket, believes the ruling party is the only alternative for 2027. He has no reservations about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ability to change the country’s economic fortunes, if given the chance to return for a second term.

Kente’s overwhelming influence as a major factor in the Taraba State APC is giving the PDP sleepless nights. This is due to the unfulfilled promises of the past two years.

With this state of affairs, Kente has been providing succour to the less privileged through his philanthropic outfit, the DSK Foundation. In the past few weeks, he has been spreading the gospel of President Tinubu to all the nooks and crannies of Taraba.

Governor Kefas and Kente hail from Taraba South Senatorial District, the zone expected to retain the governorship seat till 2031, going by the subsisting power rotation agreement in the state. Kente has pledged to serve for one term to complete the zone’s remaining four years.

Over the years, internal wrangling has always been the party’s greatest undoing. The disagreement is usually over who should fly the party’s flag. If the current indications in Taraba State in recent times are anything to go by,  the forthcoming 2027 race may be an exception.

Kente, who has sustained the party over time, may be the beneficiary of this in 2027. He is a grassroots politician with proven ability. He delivered Taraba South Senatorial District for the party during the last general election, by facilitating the constituency’s senatorial seat and two House of Representatives seats for the APC. Though a collective responsibility, the people believe it was his political sagacity that gave the APC the victory in the 2023 election.

Another point is that the people of Taraba South will not vote for the APC if the party gives the ticket to a candidate from another zone. The zone would rather support Kefas’s second tenure, after all, he is from the zone, even though he has not done too well so far in his first term.

Senator Emmanuel Bwacha is another aspirant for the APC ticket. Bwacha, who is also from Taraba South, was the APC candidate in the last general election, where he came a distant third in the race.

A very popular and strong politician in his own right, Bwacha has indicated that he would be contesting again in 2027. He said the poor performance of Kefas would give him victory this time around.

Just like Kente, Bwacha is a seasoned and grassroots politician. There is no doubt in the minds of the people that Bwacha is a factor to reckon with in the APC, though he lost out woefully after securing the ticket in 2023.

However, his followers seem to have suffered greatly after the last general election.

He is believed to have lost because some of his closest associates betrayed him at the last minute. As a result, he has distanced himself from the group and is working alone.

Consequently, it will be tough for him to secure the party’s ticket. There is also the tendency that even if he gets the ticket, other stakeholders might work against him.

Political observers believe interference from the APC national secretariat is one of the major challenges facing its nomination of candidates in Taraba. The surest way to victory, they added, is to guarantee a free and fair nomination process.

Once this obstacle is surmounted, the APC can rest assured of occupying the Taraba Government House come 2027.

Another major factor that worked against the APC in Taraba State in the past was that those entrusted with funds to deliver the state ended up diverting such funds to private use, leaving the party to look like an orphan during the main general elections.

While other candidates from Taraba Central and Taraba North senatorial districts will also strive to claim the governorship seat, the unwritten rule is that Taraba South will complete the second leg of their eight-year term. As such, most political parties will be reluctant to give their ticket to any candidate outside the southern zone.

As the PDP now finds itself in a dilemma, Governor Kefas is at a crossroads and is rumoured to be planning a defection to the APC himself. However, whether he will be welcome and given special consideration remains to be seen.

The ADC remains a valuable resort to any of the contending candidates if they fail to secure the ticket of the ruling APC.

Our correspondent gathers that most of the leading aspirants are working surreptitiously to secure a place in the ADC and take over the structure if their plan “A” does not work.

As the days draw closer, one cannot help but sit back and watch as political events unfold in readiness for the 2027 polls.

Former minister Umana Umana revalidates APC membership, rallies support for Tinubu

    …backs Governor Eno’s leadership

As part of the ongoing All Progressives Congress (APC) membership revalidation exercise in Akwa Ibom State, former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Mr. Umana Okon Umana, has reaffirmed his commitment to the party by revalidating his membership.

The exercise, which took place on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at Salvation Army Primary School, Ikot Inyangeti, in Ndiya Ward, Nsit Ubium LGA, was in line with the directive of the party’s state leader and Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, PhD, who urged members to return to their wards for the exercise.

A large crowd of party faithful and stakeholders gathered to welcome Mr. Umana and participate in the revalidation, which many described as a sign of renewed party loyalty and unity.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Umana praised the turnout, calling it a demonstration of grassroots support for both the APC and Governor Umo Eno’s leadership.

“We have to do all within our powers to support our son, who, by the grace of God, is the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State,” he said. “This massive turnout is a great show of solidarity with the governor.”

  • Jamoh: Tinubu-Uba Sani alliance unshaken ahead of 2027

Jamoh: Tinubu-Uba Sani alliance unshaken ahead of 2027

    …says El-Rufai Remains in APC

Former Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Bashir Jamoh, has declared that former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, remains a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) despite rumours of his defection.

Jamoh, a chieftain of the APC in Kaduna state, made the declaration in Kaduna while addressing journalists after a tour of the eight local government areas in Kaduna North Senatorial Zone, where he met grassroots stakeholders and party loyalists.

He described the tour as a move to bolster the party’s base and rally support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani, ahead of the forthcoming by-election and the 2027 general elections.

Reacting to speculations surrounding El-Rufai’s political status, Jamoh maintained that, as far as he is concerned, the former governor is still with the APC.

“We are yet to reach the point where we will say farewell to Malam Nasir El-Rufai. Forget about the politics, when we need his advice, we consult him, and he offers his contributions free of charge,” he said.

According to him, El-Rufai’s experience remains valuable to the party. “You cannot disown your child of eight years. He was governor for eight years under the APC. Even when he was in PDP and later CPC, which merged into APC, he contributed to the building of this party,” Jamoh noted.

He added, “It is his right to take any personal or political decision. But where we want to tap into his knowledge and experience for the benefit of the state and the party, we will always do so. Our doors are open, and I believe his are too.”

While acknowledging El-Rufai’s recent association with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Jamoh dismissed it as a developing situation. “You don’t name a child until there is a successful delivery. Let’s wait and see how the ADC process ends. Who will be the party leader, who will emerge presidential candidate, and what structure will be in place? Until then, we will watch.”

He reaffirmed his loyalty to the APC and declared the party as the “field marshal” of Nigerian politics. “Have you ever seen a field marshal frightened by a non-commissioned officer? APC remains the field marshal,” he quipped.

Jamoh said defections are part of democracy but insisted the APC remains strong in Kaduna and nationally, reiterating his support for the Tinubu-Uba Sani alliance, likening it to a political marriage that must be nurtured. “Even when your wife is no longer young, you don’t send her packing. Tinubu is our partner in this political marriage,” he said.

He also confirmed receiving calls to contest the Kaduna North senatorial seat in 2027. “Yes, my constituents have called on me to contest. I have written to the stakeholders, seeking their advice and prayers,” he disclosed.

Jamoh urged APC members to remain focused and united ahead of the 2027 polls. “This is not the time for distractions. Let’s consolidate our gains and ensure continuity in good governance,” he added.

  • 1,000 groups endorse Tinubu/Shettima’s ticket for 2027

    1,000 groups endorse Tinubu/Shettima’s ticket for 2027

Over 1,000 organisations, under the Northern Progressives Coalition (NPC), representing a broad spectrum of democratic forces across Nigeria’s 19 Northern States, convened on Abuja on Thursday to deliver a resounding endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima for re-election in 2027.

NPC Convener Usman Abdullahi declared the Tinubu-Shettima administration as the “most dependable leadership” in Nigeria’s 65 years of independence, crediting it with sparking a “socio-political renaissance” that has significantly uplifted Northern Nigeria through targeted reforms and inclusive policies.

Addressing traditional rulers, political leaders, civil society representatives, women, youth coalitions, and the broader Northern populace, Abdullahi highlighted the administration’s transformative impact in addressing decades-long challenges, including systemic underdevelopment, political marginalisation, economic disenfranchisement, and infrastructure neglect.

“For too long, the North has been depicted in sterile data that fails to capture the harsh realities from Bauchi to Zamfara, Taraba to Sokoto,” he said.

“Yet, in less than two years, Tinubu and Shettima have brought a ray of hope, delivering visionary policies that prioritise the North as a crucial pillar in Nigeria’s national architecture.”

The NPC outlined key achievements, emphasising unprecedented Northern representation in federal appointments.

“For the first time, Northern technocrats occupy strategic portfolios in security, commerce, oil regulation, and education reform, not as tokens but as co-architects of Nigeria’s renaissance,” Abdullahi stated.

Notable initiatives include the commissioning of an advanced oncology center in Katsina under a national cancer care expansion policy, reducing the need for Northern cancer patients to travel to Lagos or Abuja for treatment.

“The National Student Loan Scheme, financing over 396,000 students, has seen Northern students account for 55% of beneficiaries, receiving over N45 billion of the N77 billion disbursed by the National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

“Education reforms have been a cornerstone, with over 120 learning centers established across Northern senatorial districts, equipped with solar power and safe water systems. The partnership with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has revitalized 101 Almajiri and Tsangaya education centers in states like Bauchi, Niger, Kaduna, and Kano.

“The National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children Education (NCAOOSCE) has drafted a national policy, while the proposed Almajiri Health Scheme aims to provide health insurance to enrolled children, aligning education with wellness.”

Infrastructure development was another highlight, with projects like the N740.79 billion Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road, the 1,068km Sokoto-Badagry Highway, and the N305 billion Abuja-Lokoja-Benin Road dualization showcasing the administration’s commitment.

The dredging of the River Niger around Lokoja and the BUA Group-funded Bode Saadu-Kaima-Kosubosu Road further bolster Northern mobility and commerce.

“These are not mere promises but projects with budgetary backing and visible progress,” Abdullahi noted. The coalition praised the removal of the fuel subsidy, a “painful but necessary sacrifice” that exposed corrupt cabals, unlocking funds for local production and decentralised growth.

“Tax reforms, including incentives for agro-processors and VAT exemptions for small-scale traders, were hailed as empowering the North’s agricultural base.

“Empowerment programs under the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs have reached grassroots communities in Sokoto, Niger, Kebbi, Taraba, and Yobe, supporting victims of insecurity and fostering economic dignity.”

Abdullahi argued for continuity, warning that the 2027 election must not be a “year of political experimentation.” He emphasized the need for stability to sustain economic reforms like subsidy removal, naira floatation, and tax restructuring, which require multi-year cycles to yield full benefits.

“No other president-vice president pairing has understood the North’s developmental needs like Tinubu and Shettima,” he said, praising Shettima’s strategic insight as a former governor and banker.

Civil society coalition alleges plot to blackmail Akpabio

A coalition of civil society organizations led by the Nigeria Integrity Watch (NIW) has raised the alarm over an alleged plot to blackmail the President of the Senate, Godswill Obot Akpabio, describing it as a calculated attempt to smear his reputation and destabilize the country’s democratic institutions.

In a statement signed by its National Convener, Dr. John Samuel Nangi, the group alleged that a coordinated scheme involving paid agents and social media influencers was being orchestrated to level false sexual harassment allegations against the Senate President.

NIW claimed that several women are currently being housed in a luxury hotel in Lagos where they are being “coached” by known blackmailers to fabricate damaging accusations. The group further alleged that a serving appointee in the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a disgraced former senator are behind the plot.

“This campaign of calumny is not just an attack on one man, but a direct assault on the credibility of one of the highest offices in the country,” the statement read.

According to the NIW, the operation also involves a network of online content creators and influencers being mobilized to push misinformation and propaganda aimed at discrediting Senator Akpabio and the Senate.

The group urged key security agencies including the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Police Force (NPF), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to urgently investigate the matter and stop any moves capable of undermining national stability.

Dr. Nangi stressed the need to protect Nigeria’s democratic institutions from malicious manipulation, warning that the consequences of such a plot could further weaken public trust in governance.

“This is not just about politics. It’s about safeguarding our democracy. We must not allow deceit and manipulation to destroy the foundations of our leadership,” he stated.

As the allegations unfold, the NIW called on the media, civil society, and all well-meaning Nigerians to remain vigilant and resist any efforts to derail the democratic process through blackmail and propaganda.

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State has declared its preparedness to conduct a credible, fair, and hitch-free congress across all 18 local government areas of the state.

This follows the release of the official timetable for the 2025 congresses by the party’s national leadership, which will cover 13 states, including Ondo.

According to the statement last week by the PDP National Organising Secretary, Hon. Umar M. Bature, the exercise will involve the election of new executives at the ward, local government, and state levels starting in September 2025

Sale of nomination and ad-hoc forms will follow from Monday, August 18 to Friday, August 29.

He emphasised that the failures of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) had left a leadership vacuum the PDP is morally and structurally positioned to fill.

The party caretaker chairman, however, called on members of the PDP across the state to close ranks, rise above petty divisions, and embrace the shared goal of electoral redemption.

“Our people are yearning for responsive governance, and the PDP stands ready to answer that call,” Bello declared.

Eyitayo Jegede, SAN; PDP Board of Trustees member and party statesman, Olorogun Eddy Olafeso; Barr. Ola Mafo, Chief Segun Adegoke and former State Chairman, Hon.
