Fix your internal crises, stop blaming Tinubu, Shehu Sani tells opposition parties

Senator Shehu Sani has urged opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and Social Democratic Party (SDP), to take responsibility for resolving their internal crises rather than accusing President Bola Tinubu of instigating their troubles.

Speaking on national television, Sani criticised the tendency of opposition leaders to look to the presidency for solutions to their internal disputes.

“It is unfortunate that the opposition in the country is looking up to the president to solve their problems,” he said. “How logical is it when you have a problem in your house, then you start blaming your neighbour or adversary for it instead of addressing it?”

He insisted that each party must manage its own affairs: “If there is a problem in the PDP, it is for the PDP to solve; if there is a problem in the Labour Party and SDP, it is for them to solve. I don’t know whether they are also trying to ask the president to come to their party and fix things.”

Over the past year, the opposition has suffered major defections of governors, lawmakers, and key figures to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), with many citing unresolved internal conflicts. In response, opposition leaders have accused the APC and President Tinubu of orchestrating the turmoil.

Senator Sani, however, dismissed such claims as “irresponsible,” urging the parties to focus on putting their houses in order.

“If you are in the PDP and you have people working against your party, you refuse to suspend them, you refuse to expel them, and then you decide to focus on the president as being responsible for your problem. I think you are simply being irresponsible.

“If you are in the SDP and you have a crisis in your party and you don’t fix it, and then you are looking for the president or blaming the president, trying to find a scapegoat for your problems, I think you are just unserious.”

According to him, it is not in the best interest of the president to fix the issues in the opposition and said it is part of a political strategy to see “your adversary” battling so many issues.

“So, to me, as a president from a ruling party, he cannot be seen trying to fix a missile or a gun that will be directed at him,” the former Kaduna lawmaker said.

“It is part of a political strategy to ensure that your adversary has so many problems within his own area that he will not be able to contend.”

In his Democracy Day speech, Tinubu threw a subtle jab at the opposition parties, which he described as sinking ships.

Tinubu said he would neither bother about the crisis in the opposition parties nor help them fix the problems, adding that it was a pleasure to see opposition parties in disarray.

“Political parties fearful of members leaving may be better served by examining their internal processes and affairs rather than fearfully conjuring up demons that do not exist,” Tinubu told a joint session of the National Assembly on June 12.

“For me, I will not say, ‘Try your best to put your house in order.’ I will not help you to do so either.’ It is indeed a pleasure to witness you in such disarray.”

Ndume: El-Rufai a victim of betrayal he once inflicted on Amaechi

Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, has said that former Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, is the architect of his current political misfortunes.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, Ndume admitted that he sometimes feels tempted to gloat over the fallout between El-Rufai and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Ndume, who served as the Director-General of the Rotimi Amaechi Presidential Campaign, recalled that El-Rufai was initially aligned with Amaechi’s camp ahead of the APC primary but later switched allegiance to Tinubu following the latter’s visit to Kaduna.

He recounted how El-Rufai had publicly pledged to work with Amaechi during a consultation visit, only to later turn his back on the former Rivers governor.

He said, “El-Rufai was supposed to be on our side but somehow, he moved over. And I think these are part of the things that are annoying or frustrating him.

“He was on our side. Amaechi’s side. Before Tinubu was nominated, he made up his mind to support Tinubu, and Tinubu, as he rightly said, said that he should not leave and that he should come on board, join the government.

“So since then, I’ve not been that [close to El-Rufai] because he abandoned our group.

“He was on our side but went to support Tinubu fully. You know, he really mobilized. He did a lot of things.

“Tinubu asked him to join the government but somehow, up till now, I don’t understand what happened between El-Rufai and Tinubu, but that is not my business.

“But sometimes, I’ll say, ‘okay o, you did that to us, it’s payback to yourself’. But, I cannot understand, I was the Chief Whip.

“El-Rufai came to the chamber for ministerial screening and we almost like told him to take a bow and go…”

The senator said after his victory, Tinubu nominated El-Rufai for a ministerial appointment but the former Kaduna State governor was rejected.

But, he noted that El-Rufai is now a leading member of the anti-Tinubu coalition after he dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC), for the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Ndume, who also hinted that he may exit the All Progressives Congress (APC) if President Bola Tinubu fails to fix things in the country.

The senator, who revealed that members of the coalition group have made overtures to him to join them, said he has attended several meetings at the instance of the opposition leaders seeking to form a coalition to unseat Tinubu in 2027.

The senator said he has remained hesitant to join the coalition with a belief that Tinubu can fix Nigeria.

“I’m aware of the opposition coalition. I went to several of their meetings. I still believe this president can fix these things, but failure might cause me to move. The overloaded ship will sink,” Ndume said.

“They have been making overtures, but I told them I don’t want to jump from the frying pan into the fire. I have to be sure.

“I believe that Tinubu can be a successful president; that was my expectation, but if he continues this way, that ship, whether you load in other people or governors, you are just endangering the APC, pushing it towards capsizing,” he said.

“As the president said, there is a vacancy in the ship. But if you overload the ship, it will probably capsize, and if it capsizes, you lose everybody.”

  • Lagos Governor: humility, loyalty as virtues

Lagos Governor: humility, loyalty as virtues

    By Gboyega Akosile

Many qualities define a leader, whether in politics or in the corporate world but integrity, humility and loyalty tower above all. A cursory look at the life and times of successful leaders often reveals these qualities and why such leaders are celebrated by their subjects. Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s life and career trajectory can be said to have been solidly built over the years upon these virtues.

As he clocks 60 today, a careful study of his life is enough lesson for the next generation of leaders who wish to leave a legacy. Until he was invited to throw his hat into the ring for the Lagos State Governorship contest in 2019, only a few Nigerians knew his antecedents. But to his leaders and colleagues, within the inner caucus of Lagos State politics and government, Sanwo-Olu was a quintessential leader and administrator in the making that had a lot to offer. This was the beginning and six years after, he has continued to make his leaders and patrons proud through his activities and deliverables.

Arguably his greatest achievement and leadership trait since he assumed office, have been his ability to visualize the qualities of a successful, mega status of Lagos, and maintaining a life-long focus on the four intertwined challenges that he believed must be collectively addressed for the commercial city to achieve success as a state. Unlike most politicians, who believe in showmanship and unnecessary razzmatazz, Sanwo-Olu’s approach to delivering quality leadership is wrapped in humility. As a team leader, he has, through this, inspired many of us on how best to serve the people.  Like Mahatma Gandhi, Sanwo-Olu believes that the most meaningful goal of leadership is to inspire. Not to demand or command, but to inspire. This explains why his administration has been rancour free, especially between him and his deputy, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat.

History has taught us that the leaders most respected for leaving their mark on the world, their countries, or their organizations have been those who have inspired people to act and perform. Sanwo-Olu fits into this category of leaders because his  leadership was characterized by his commitment to truth, loyalty, and service, emphasizing empowerment over power and inspiring change through example. He believes in leading by example, living a life consistent with the values he espoused and inspiring others to follow suit. His leadership style is focused on moral authority, ethical conduct, and self-discipline.

As Governor, Mr. Sanwo-Olu has consistently distinguished himself through his tireless efforts to promote justice, accountability, and the rule of law. The last six years have been marked by significant strides in nation-building, building on the success of his predecessors and leaders, with an indelible mark on Lagos State development.

At 60, his legacy is characterized by his selflessness, dedication to the public good, fostering a sense of unity and inclusiveness among Lagosians and Nigerians as a whole. Beyond Lagos, which is a natural pacesetter for infrastructural development and economic growth in Nigeria,  today’s birthday boy has worked assiduously to mobilize citizens towards a common goal of building a just and peaceful society.

His leadership style, his calm demeanour in the face of serious challenges is notable for its emphasis on good and responsive governance for people of Lagos State.

These values continue to serve as a benchmark for good governance and leadership in Nigeria.

As the world celebrates him today, no doubt the fact that his contributions, both in corporate Nigeria and public service have aroused our consciousness on the need for leaders to serve with the mindset of putting forward a transformative power of selfless service and the importance of prioritizing the welfare of citizens.

In the last 30 years of his being in the saddle of leadership under tested mentors and role models till the time he assumed office as Lagos Governor, Sanwo-Olu  has recorded several landmark achievements as a man of integrity, loyalty and humility.

I write this to pay a fitting tribute to Mr. Governor not because he is my boss, not because he is a first rate administrator and an acknowledged expert in financial services; not because of the present position he occupies as the Governor of Lagos State; not because of his status as a distinguished fellow of the Nigeria Institute of Training and Development (NITAD) and certainly not on account of his past distinguished public service record that is widely acknowledged by all and sundry and many more of such accomplishments that one may have lost count, but significantly because of the huge difference our most humble, unassuming leader of people with direction and vision has brought to the character of governance. He has done this without undermining his political leaders and without losing his calm and humility.

Sanwo-Olu has always impressed me even before he rose to his present height with his commitment to core values, uncommon humility and administrative skills and because of his uncommon passion for service and humanitarian causes.

As one of his lieutenants, I am also impressed by his commitment to standards and excellence in whatever he does, a trait he has refreshingly brought to governance. There is also the element of his famed integrity which has continued to soar in spite of exposure to public resources and sensitive high places.

Though an alumnus of the John F. Kennedy School of government, the London Business School and the Lagos Business School, I have argued over the years that these qualifications, including the B.Sc in Surveying and an MBA he acquired from the University of Lagos, have only served as foundation for the knowledge he has garnered over the years under prominent and distinguished leaders, especially, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

As a man of foresight, one of Tinubu’s greatest gifts is his ability to recruit quality leaders. It was under this scenario that Tinubu and his team of wisemen met prior to the 2019 election and concluded that Sanwo-Olu should be encouraged to govern Lagos. The rest is history.

Sanwo-Olu’s political career is arguably the most inspiring in recent Nigeria’s history. The journey to Lagos government house, debuted six years ago, of course, it started 16 years earlier when he was appointed Special Adviser on Corporate Matters to the then deputy governor of Lagos State, Femi Pedro. After the General Elections of 2007, Mr Sanwo-Olu was appointed commissioner for establishments, training and pension by Governor Babatunde Fashola. He was later in 2016 made Managing Director/CEO of the Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC) by Governor Akinwumi Ambode. Some of his notable public sector achievements include the supervision of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) Privatization projects. He set up and was the pioneer Board Chairman of Lagos Security Trust Fund. The LAGBUS System and the Control and Command Centre in Alausa, Ikeja, were subsequently established under his directives.

Born on June 25, 1965, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu was the treasurer at the former Lead Merchant Bank from 1994 to 1997 after which he moved to the United Bank for Africa as the head of foreign money market. He then proceeded to First Inland Bank, Plc (now First City Monument Bank) as deputy general manager and divisional head.

He was the chairman of Baywatch Group Limited and First Class Group Limited and a board member of the Department for International Development (DFID/DEEPEN) Fund and Audit committee of Caverton Offshore Service Group, Plc.

Looking back, one can conclude that his background as a technocrat of note has impacted so well on his career as politician and public servant. A man of peace, Sanwo-Olu’s approach to politics has been very inspiring and progressive. Under him, Lagos has not only witnessed developments, the city has been rated by a global agency as one of the best cities in the world. Early this year, Time Out ranked the state as one of the world’s best cities for 2025, joining Cape Town and Marrakech as the only African cities on the global list. The ranking, based on residents feedback and experts input, highlights Lagos for its vibrant culture, ease of social connection, and growing creative scene. See the new rankings and find out what makes these cities stand out.

As one of the lieutenants of Governor Sanwo-Olu, I am very proud of all his accomplishments. I salute his tenacity and resilience in standing tall and working vehemently for the cause of the masses. My boss has surely presented himself as a peacemaker and an advocate of good governance within the Nigerian political space. This is not a small feat. As he climbs the 6th ladder, I congratulate him and wish him God’s abundant blessings as we look forward to more successful years in good health. May his strength be renewed to continue to enjoy God’s favour and live well. Sixty hearty cheers to the man I call “the BOS of Lagos” and a blessing to the State of Excellence and the Nigeria nation!

  • Sanwo-Olu at 60

    Sanwo-Olu at 60

Lagos State Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu is 60 today. Deputy Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU examines the feats of the dynamic and workaholic administrator, which have made him a reference point in good governance.

At 60, Babajide Olusola Aduragbemi Sanwo-Olu, surveyor, banker and governor of Lagos, is forging ahead with purpose, courage and confidence.

In the last six years, he has been the captain steering the ship of the largest state, former federal capital and economic nerve centre. The destination is a safe harbour.

The testimonies of stakeholders underscore their perception of an effective captain, who is living to expectation through sheer fidelity to Lagosians who conferred on him the mandate to govern with the fear of God.

To ordinary Lagosians, who savour the expanded dividends of democracy across the sectors, Sanwo-Olu is, on steady course in implementing his THEMES Agenda, which is anchored on the Development Blue Print initiated by his leader, President Bola Tinubu, when he was governor of Lagos State.

The foundation laid by the Jagaban Borgu has made it easier for his three successors, who built on it under hid guidancd, to excel.

Hailing the governor, the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, said Sanwo-Olu’s  Diamond Jubilee is a celebration of the grace of God who has bestowed on him the manifold opportnities to serve and make a mark on the lives of Lagosians.

In a, congratulatory statement, the apex leadership structure added that in the last six years, he has earned public confidence because his policies and programmes are dictated by their needs, aspirations, expectations and yearnings for improved welfare.

The advisory body stressed: “Saneo-Olu is presiding over a government of inclusion. You are accessible. You are listening governor, and your open door policy has contributed to the flow of feedback on government activities, thereby expanding the level of public input into governance and enhancing accountability and good governance.

“Your people-oriented policies and programmes, particularly your commitment to the huge infrastrutural battles in consonance with your THEMES agenda, are marks of success that underscore your fidelity to your campaign promises.

“We have confidence in your ability to sustain the tempo of achievements to the end and errect lasting legacies that would sustain the status of Lagos State as a reference point in the country.

“May God contnue to strengthen you as you renew your resolve to serve our beloved state with vigour, patriotism and sense of responsibility.”

Also hailing the governor, Ikorodu apex APC leaders, led by Prince Abiodun Ogunleye, former party chairman and deputy governor, thanked God for his, life of service, diligent contributions and commitment to the welfare of Lagosians.

In a, statement, the group said: “Your Excellency, you have lived to expectation by building on the sound foundations laid by your predecessors in accordance with the Lagos State Blueprint on development initiated by our leader, President Bola Tinubu GCFR, when he was governor of the state.

“The implementation of your THEMES agenda, which derived from the blueprint, has led to the expansion of dividends of democracy across the sectors. You have not rested on your oars in breaking new grounds of infrastructure development across the three senatorial districts.”

It added: “You have presided over a government of continuity that has protected the interests of Lagos State and earned the trust and confidence of the people as a true progressive, a democrat and statesman.

“We note that through your humility, candour and open mindedness, you have fostered inclusion, and under your leadership, there is peace in the party, cohesion in the government and harmony in the state.

“As a tested and trusted leader, and true servant of our dear state, your impact will always be remembered and your legacy will definitely outlive your tenure.

“Our prayer is that God should continue to order your steps and give you more wisdom as you rededicate yourself to the service of Lagos State.”

According to the Lagos State Caucus of the House of Representatives, what Sanwo-Olu is celebrating is the reality of a worthwhile existence as an accomplished technocrat, an achievement-oriented administrator and a statesman with a promise of a greater future.

The caucus added: “It is gratifying to note that as a politician and progressive leader, you have exhibited patriotism, courage, dedication to public welfare and commitment to the sustenance and defense of the vast interests of Lagos State.

“Your utmost fidelity to the implementation of your THEMES agenda has been bearing fruits in various sectors, including education, health, social infrastructure and security.

“Lagos State has benefitted from the avowed implementation of laudable people-oriented policies and programmes dictated by the aspirations of our people for development and progress in the last six years.

“We note with fondness that you have fostered inclusion and expanded the horizon of democratic participation in a way that has forged effective synergy between the ruling party and your government.

“Also, you have also succeeded in presiding over an atmosphere of peace and tranquility peace in our beloved state through your display of humility, simplicity, forthrightness and belief in team work.

“Much still needs to be accomplished in the remaining two years by your progressive administration, which has through its giant strides, remained a reference point in the country.

“We are confident that you will build on your achievements, break new grounds and make more impacts.”

In a congratulatory message, the Lagos State APC, led by Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, noted that Sanwo-Olu you has justified the confidence reposed in him by the chapter and the generality of Lagosians, adding that his programmes have met the aspirations of the people for greater dividends of democracy.

It added: “We are particularly delighted that you are breaking new grounds of infrastructure development in consonance with your campaign promises to the electorate.

“You have presided over a progressive and inclusive government that has protected the interests of Lagos State and earned the trust of the people across the sectors.

“Your Excellency, you have are steering the ship of state with your humility, candour and open mindedness, which have endeared you to the stakeholders.

“We are confident that you will erect lasting legacies worthy of pride by this generation and those yet unborn.”

Sanwo-Olu never dreamt of becoming governor. According to an account, his highest political aspiration was to serve as Chief of Staff to an aspirant, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, who later became his deputy.

His ascension to power was an act of God and a fulfilment of destiny. While those who brought him to government around 2003 floundered at a time before retracing their steps, the ‘young’ technocrat exhibited loyalty.

Reminiscent of his student days and life as a banker, he embraced the duties assigned to him with passion, demonstrated humility, intelligence and candour. As an aide to former Deputy Governor Olufemi Pedro and Asiwaju Tinubu, he shunned idleness.

In the Tinubu government, Sanwo-Olu’s talents unfolded, making him a vital asset. He was tested and trusted by his leader; a round peg in a round hole. In the positions he held before becoming the governor, he performed creditably.

As Special Adviser on Corporate Governance, Acting Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Commissioner for Establishment, Training and Pensions, and LSDPC boss, he made his marks.

Sanwo-Olu had also earned a reputation for hardwork, diligence, focus and achieving results as, governor.

From day one, he had hit the ground running, conscious of the fact that the progressive beat must go on in the Centre of Excellence.

He increased the tempo of infrastructure battle, knowing that as population grew in geometric proportions, there would be pressure on the pre-existing social amenities.

Then, the strange pestilence, Covid-19 pandemic, sneaked into Lagos to distract his government. Sanwo-Olu became the Incident Commander. But, conscious of the nature of the vast city state and people’s yearning, he has maintained a sensitive balance.

While tackling the public health challenge, concerted efforts are also made to full the campaign promises he made during the electioneering.

The EndSars protest was, also a challenge. Although it was a mass response to the police behaviour by youths, the government bore the brunt. Up to now, some activists still insist that there wasa massacre at Lekki Toll Gate. But there, was no evidence. It was an inaginary attack without wound, a massacre without blood.

Refuse dumping, traffic management chaos and public work challenge have been tackled based on the acknowledgment that the state has groaned under the yoke of filth, chaotic traffic situation and infrastructural deficit.

Also, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) was directed to operate a minimum of two shifts until 11.pm daily.

The Office of Drainage Services in the Ministry of Environment embarked on an aggressive cleaning of secondary and tertiary drainage system to ensure the free flow of rainwater during the raining season.

The integrated mass transportation blueprint of the Lagos Government has been a, success story. Also, the bandoned Blue and Red Line Rail projects, and the commercial waterways transportation have seen the light of the day.

Today, Lagos State pays N85, 000 minimum wage. Gratuities and pensions are paid promptly. Housing schemes ars delivered.

Sanwo-Olu has defended the education sector with improved funding. For the first time in 38 years, Lagos State University (LASU) became a residential tertiary institution.

The Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (AOCED), Ijanikin, and Lagos, State University, Ikoridu, have  been upgraded to  fully-fledged universities.

Many road projects in urban and rural areas have been inaugurated. Lagosians now expect him to commission the Opebi-Odo Iya Alaro link bridge this year.

Much is still expected from Sanwo-Olu in the next two years so that a “greater Lagos” can really rise through the continuous implementation of “six pillars of development agenda,” which represent the governmen’s response to public yearnings.

The pillars that encapsulates his vision, include traffic management and transportation, health and environment, education and technology, making Lagos as a 21st century economy, entertainment and tourism, and security.

But there are also dark moments. Life is not a bed of roses. Political life could be full of ups and downs. The field of politics and the corridor of power could be slippery. Occasional clouds can blur an otherwise illustrious career. Sometines, governance is, stressful, although stress itself  is concomitant with human existence. In the highest offices in the land, occupants can suffer a sort of executive stress arising from demands, pressures, commissions and omissions, unconscious misteps, gaps in role fulfilment, disparity between expectation and reality, and perception of inexplicable dilution of loyalty which could lead to adversity of power. There could be turbulence. The lesson should not be lost on all office holders. It should be learned by the wise. Not all in similar circumstances would survive the tumoil. But, unlike his predecessor, the BOS of Lagos survived the multiple tests of power, and if the acquired experience is properly deployed, he will wax stronger.

The governor was born in June 25, 1965 in Lagos. He is a graduate of the cosmopolitan University of Lagos, Akoka, where he studied Surveying. He also attended the London Business School, the Lagos Business School and the John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Sanwo-Olu earned an MBA degree from UNILAG. He is an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM) and Fellow of the Nigeria Institute of Training and Development (NITAD).

Sanwo-Olu is not a politician without a second address. He was the Treasurer at former Lead Merchant Bank from 1994 to 1997. He also worked with the United Bank for Africa (UBA) as the Head of Foreign Money Market. At the First Inland Bank, Plc (now First City Monument Bank), he was a Deputy General Manager and Divisional Head.

In private business, he was also a success. Sanwo-Olu was the Chairman of Baywatch Group Limited and First Class Group Limited. He was a board member of the Department for International Development (DFID/DEEPEN) Fund and Audit Committee of Caverton Offshore Services Group, PLC.

Since 2003, he had placed his hand on the plough and never looked back. Although he joined the Tinubu administration as a technocrat, when was appointed a Special Adviser on Corporate Matters to Pedro, he later learned the ropes. He served as Acting Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, and later, Commissioner for Commerce and Industry in 2007.

In 2007, he was appointed as Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions by former Governor Babatunde Fashola SAN). In 2016, Ambode appointed him as Managing Director/CEO of LSDPC. His achievements include the supervision of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) Privatization Projects.

He also played a great role in the setting up of the Lagos Security Trust Fund. He served as its pioneer board chairman. The LAGBUS System and the Control and Command Centre in Alausa were also part of his initiatives.

Sanwo-Olu is a recipients of many awards and honours. They include the Platinum Award from the Lagos State Public Service Club, 2009 Best in Human Capital Development award from the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), Merit award from the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria, Merit award from the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management in Nigeria (CIPMN), Merit Award from the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), and LSDPC Impactful Leadership and Recognition Award.

Sanwo-Olu is married with children to Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu.

  • Klinsmann slams Atiku for questioning Tinubu’s associations

Klinsmann slams Atiku for questioning Tinubu’s associations

Renowned policy analyst and APC chieftain from Anambra State, Pharmacist Ikeagwuonwu Chinedu Klinsmann, has taken a swipe at former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, over recent statement questioning President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ties to his Chicago university classmates.

Describing Atiku’s remarks as “hypocritical and morally hollow,” Klinsmann said the former Vice President is in no position to cast aspersions on others given his “troubling history of financial opacity, unresolved corruption allegations, and unexplained wealth.”

In a statement in Abuja, Klinsmann faulted Atiku’s attempt to draw attention to the President’s personal associations while leaving his questionable financial dealings unexplained.

“If anyone should refrain from speaking about integrity and transparency, it is Atiku Abubakar. His career, from customs officer to Vice President, has been overshadowed by unresolved questions about how a public servant amassed wealth estimated at over $81 million,” Klinsmann stated.

He cited several reports and official findings, including the 2010 U.S. Senate investigation, which linked over $40 million in suspect funds to offshore accounts reportedly connected to Atiku’s family and business interests

“The movement of tens of millions of dollars through opaque offshore structures, facilitated by Atiku’s wife, is not a matter that can be waved off as political propaganda,” Klinsmann stressed. “Nigerians deserve full disclosure: Where did that money come from? Why was it moved offshore, and why has Atiku consistently refused to open his financial records to scrutiny?”

Klinsmann also raised questions about Atiku’s Dubai real estate holdings, including a luxury flat at Palm Tower reportedly worth $1.23 million, along with other properties linked to his 23-year-old daughter.

He wondered: “How did a career customs officer – and later Vice President – acquire such high-value foreign assets without a transparent income trail? How did his daughter, barely out of her twenties, come to own luxury properties in one of the world’s most expensive markets?”

The APC stalwart further referenced Atiku’s business dealings through Intels Nigeria Limited, a logistics firm he co-founded.

“Allegations persist that Atiku used Intels as a vehicle to convert public resources into private assets. A 2007 Nigerian Senate investigation accused him of diverting $145 million in public funds, some of which reportedly ended up bolstering companies tied to him,” he said.

Klinsmann added that Atiku’s continued evasion of these issues and unwillingness to open up his business dealings further erode whatever credibility he claims.

Klinsmann questioned Atiku’s stewardship during Nigeria’s privatisation era, accusing him of overseeing a process tainted by accusations of favoritism and asset stripping.

“The scandals around the sale of national assets, especially in the oil and gas sector, are still fresh in public memory. While Atiku insists he is innocent, he has failed to provide the public with convincing proof or independent audits to clear his name,” he noted.

Reacting directly to Atiku’s attempt to link President Tinubu’s legitimacy to his academic associations, Klinsmann said, “This is deflection at its most desperate. President Tinubu’s education and public service history are well documented. Atiku, on the other hand, cannot speak with the same clarity about his own finances or business history. It is hypocrisy of the highest order to question others when your own house is riddled with unanswered questions.”

Klinsmann called on Atiku to take responsibility and show true leadership by voluntarily disclosing all his assets, including those allegedly held in his family’s name and through offshore companies. “If you want to talk about accountability, then lead by example. How were your properties in Dubai acquired? What role did you play in transferring suspect funds to the U.S.? How did Intels rise to become a billion-dollar company under your political watch?”

He emphasised that President Tinubu’s administration remains committed to transparency, accountability, and institutional reforms, including strengthening the EFCC and ICPC. He called on Nigerians to see through what he described as “the latest in Atiku’s long-running campaign of distraction,” especially coming from someone who has contested – and lost – every presidential election cycle since 2007.

Klinsmann said it was time Nigerians began demanding answers not just from those in power, but also from those who seek to return to it. “Before Atiku continues his familiar script of mudslinging, he must first explain how he rose from a modest customs officer’s income to a global real estate and logistics empire. That’s the real mystery – and one Nigerians deserve to have unravelled.”

He said: “This country deserves leadership rooted in accountability and substance, not political theatrics. Until Atiku addresses the mountain of unanswered allegations against him, he has no moral standing to attack President Tinubu – or anyone else for that matter.”

Veteran journalist and former Senator for Ekiti Central, Babafemi Ojudu, has dismissed allegations that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu betrayed the June 12 democratic struggle, describing the claims as “revisionist, mischievous, and politically motivated.”

Ojudu, a former Special Adviser on Political Matters to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari and a prominent figure in Nigeria’s 1990s pro-democracy movement, said Tinubu’s role in the June 12 struggle was marked by courage and sacrifice, not personal ambition or collusion.

Speaking during a television appearance, Ojudu refuted claims that Tinubu collaborated with the military regimes of Generals Ibrahim Babangida and Sani Abacha, insisting that the president was among those who resisted dictatorship.

“As soon as IBB annulled that election, Tinubu rose up with others and began to fight,” Ojudu recalled. “He was arrested, locked up at Alagbon Close under harsh conditions. I visited him there several times. You cannot describe someone like that as working with the military.”

He said the fight for the actualisation of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, believed to have been won by Chief MKO Abiola, involved great personal risk, and Tinubu stood firmly with those who sought to restore democracy in Nigeria.

“He took a lot of risks. He put in a lot of resources. He was single-minded in his determination to ensure the military was ousted. There are things he did that history will later recount,” Ojodu said.

Ojodu’s comments come amid rising controversy triggered by recent remarks by Kola Abiola, son of the late MKO Abiola, alleging that Tinubu entered into negotiations with the Abacha regime in exchange for a political position in Lagos.

“That is not true,” Ojodu replied. “There was no negotiation made with Abacha during that period that Abiola was not part of. Abacha negotiated with Abiola, with Tinubu, with top members of the civil society and media chiefs. He offered to validate June 12 and swear in Abiola after cleaning up the military. The mistake we made was believing Abacha. We didn’t know he was playing a game of deception.”

He described the late dictator as a master of subterfuge who manipulated even the most determined pro-democracy advocates with false promises.

“Abacha deceived everybody,” he declared. “He promised to make some politicians deputy governors to military administrators just to buy time and sow confusion. But when we saw that he wouldn’t deliver, the fight against him intensified.”

Ojodu, who recently published his memoir, Adventures of a Guerrilla Journalist, also lambasted former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido for what he termed an attempt to diminish the role of key actors in the democratic struggle.

“What Lamido did was not quite right,” Ojodu said. “Honour should be given to whom it is due. If Lamido and his political group had been part of the struggle, people would not have referred to June 12 as a Yoruba affair. They handed over power to the military and rubbished that election.”

On calls to immortalize June 12 heroes, Ojodu said the real honour should be the delivery of democratic dividends to Nigerians.

“I didn’t go into that trouble for honour,” he said when asked why his name was omitted from the list of recent national honourees. “The honour we seek is satisfaction in what we did. My concern is that the President should honour Nigerians with good governance.”

2027: El-Rufai not God to decide Tinubu’s fate, Nigerians will, says analyst

Public affairs analyst, Usman Okai Austin, has berated former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, over his recent political comments, describing him as a bitter ex-governor desperate for relevance.

Austin, in a statement on Tuesday, urged El-Rufai to stop acting like God, warning that only Nigerians, not any individual, will determine the outcome of the 2027 presidential election.

His reaction followed El-Rufai’s claim that President Bola Tinubu would not win re-election in 2027.

Describing El-Rufai as “pure sour grapes” and “ego-driven,” Okai wrote on his Facebook page: “El-Rufai doesn’t care about Nigeria, he cares about Nasir El-Rufai. Let Nigerians decide Tinubu’s fate in 2027, not El-Rufai, who talks like God and tries to usurp the people’s power.”

The analyst further asserted that El-Rufai’s political influence had been systematically eroded by his successor, Governor Uba Sani, noting that the former governor had miscalculated by assuming Sani’s loyalty would be unconditional after endorsing him.

“This is the same El-Rufai who manipulated his childhood friend, Uba Sani, into becoming his Chief of Staff, then weaponised him against Shehu Sani, despite the fact that Uba and Shehu are brothers.

“Blood proved thicker than water,” he wrote.

Describing El-Rufai’s fall as “poetic justice,” Okai painted a picture of a man once feared, now discarded.

“Once a kingmaker, he is now a discarded pawn — used, dumped, and left seething with rage.”

He also referenced El-Rufai’s controversial ministerial nomination, which was rejected during Senate screening, as an event he termed an “unprecedented disgrace.”

Adding insult to injury, Uba Sani reportedly disregarded El-Rufai’s preferred nominee for Kaduna’s ministerial slot and instead nominated his candidate.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Okai noted, appeared to have completely sidelined the former governor.

“There were no calls, no reconciliation. Just cold, calculated disregard,” Okai wrote.

El-Rufai’s reaction, according to the analyst, has been one of public outbursts and media interviews.

Questioning if anyone is still listening, Okai said, “Now, El-Rufai is on a revenge tour, granting interviews, crying betrayal, and desperately trying to explain himself.”

The post further criticised El-Rufai’s role in turning Kaduna into Nigeria’s first Muslim-Muslim ticket state, accusing him of fuelling religious imbalance and overseeing widespread insecurity.

“He had the audacity to advise Tinubu to replicate his divisive strategy.

“But Tinubu outplayed him. Shettima got the VP slot. The ministerial dream collapsed.”

“But Tinubu outplayed him. Shettima got the VP slot. The ministerial dream collapsed.”

Okai also recalled El-Rufai’s history of political conflict, citing his attacks on former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Musa Yar’Adua, and his habit of replacing political allies with loyal family members.

“Had Tinubu made him a minister, or had Uba Sani remained his puppet, El-Rufai would be singing his praises today.

“But now? He’s just another bitter ex-governor, thrashing in the political gutter, screaming for relevance.”

  • Celebrating six decades of Governor Sanwo-Olu

Celebrating six decades of Governor Sanwo-Olu

    By Hon. Olumuyiwa Jimoh

Leaders demonstrate a high sense of connectedness with society as they have a great and deep understanding of the relevance of power and that it becomes useless if it is not deployed in serving the people.

Service to the people, they believe, can only be seen and expressed in the degree to which the proclivities of power manifestations become instrumental to positively impacting the lives of the citizenry. In essence, Governance can only be relevant to the extent to which it has touched the lives of the people and the community.

It is in these dimensions that we have come to analyse His Excellency, the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was born next to my father’s house at 63 Omidun Bestridden the seat of Government in Lagos State as Governor of the State.

Governance benefits the people that it governs. He has remained a symbol of pride to those who stuck their necks out in support of his leadership in the State from conception, and as he marks his Diamond of existence on Mother Earth, his grade A performance has not waned, rather, it is gaining increasing momentum.

The struggle and the political ferment that led to his emergence as the Governor of our great State are still very fresh in the minds of political insiders. Despite all the fears and trepidation in the hearts of those who have demonstrated completely for everyone to see that he has pledged his life and honour to the service of the people of Lagos state.

It is a belief that is borne out of the understanding that when every Nigerian plays his own role effectively, a critical mass of greatness will be built that would generate the needed momentum for national renaissance. His leadership motive, therefore, is not limited to the corners of Lagos state but has an innate pursuit of contributing to a Nigeria that is able to deliver justice and welfare to her people and a greater world that would provide equal access to global resources to all peoples of the world.

I have watched with admiration and awe the continued transformation of Lagos State under the dexterous hands of our governmental processes are becoming compliant with global standards, while various institutions of Governance are being strengthened. He is, in fact, creating a State that would outlive and contend with its

Contemporaries, as he leaves his imprints in everything that he has touched thus far. His marks are indelible, succeeded in turning governance into a symbol of hope and not of despair that many other leaders have come to foist on the citizens of other climes since the inception of this democratic experiment. No facet of the state’s economy has escaped his transformative touch.

He has always demonstrated his acute realisation that Governance is teamwork. The enthronement of a smooth interface between the Executive, which he leads, and the State Legislature, where some of us belong, is a conscious effort to create a functional, effective, but constructive democratic governance that would produce the best result possible for the benefit of the majority of the people of the State.

Unlike some governors who interfere in the affairs of their state legislatures, Governor Sanwo-Olu has taken a different path. He respects the independence of the legislature, allowing it the freedom to operate creatively and effectively. This hands-off approach has resulted in the development of robust laws and statutes that both empower the citizens and strengthen the machinery of governance in Lagos State.

A great party man who has championed the cause of the party that bred him and gave his political ambitions vent to express itself, as the Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu and as  the celebrant, he has implemented most of the policies of the APC, adhering strictly to the dictates of its leadership and never seeking to overthrow its leadership or

Pocket its leaders. He has encouraged free choices and abhorred all decisions which has helped to make the party more cohesive and vibrant in the State than ever. However, I need to say that he was also blessed with a good wife who gave all necessary support to him when it was needed, as the saying goes, the hand that rules the empire rules the nation. If it’s not arrogant to say that the contribution of Ibironke Sanwo-Olu gave adequate support to the Governor

As he marks the sixth on the surface of the earth, I want to join millions of his admirers all over the world, especially in our great State to say that this diamond age should continue as a golden opportunity to continue delivering.

Olisa Metuh confirms Omokri’s role in hiring Segun Showunmi as Atiku’s spokesperson

Former national publicity secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olisa Metuh, has backed Reno Omokri’s claim that he was responsible for hiring Segun Showunmi as spokesperson to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Speaking with newsmen via a phone call, Metuh confirmed Omokri’s statement, stating, “It happened in 2018 when I was still active in politics. Reno called me to recommend someone for Atiku. I initially thought of Deji Adeyanju, but he had left the PDP. I had encouraged him to form an advocacy group instead.”

Metuh added that he eventually suggested Segun Showunmi. “I remembered Segun and recommended him to Reno. I told Segun to call Reno, and he did. That was it.”

He stressed that there was no confusion regarding how Showunmi emerged as Atiku’s spokesperson, saying, “There is absolutely no controversy about that.”

Before ending the conversation, Metuh remarked, “I don’t think Reno and Segun are still in the PDP anymore, so there is really no controversy there.”

Omokri, a former presidential aide to Goodluck Jonathan, had earlier revealed on ‘The Honest Bunch’ podcast that he was instrumental in hiring several aides for Atiku, including Showunmi.

He also stated, in a Facebook post, that he personally negotiated Showunmi’s salary during that time.

According to him, “If I am nothing at all, I am a meticulous record keeper. In May 2018, Olisa Metuh, the former spokesman of the Peoples Democratic Party, recommended Segun Showunmi for the role of spokesman to Waziri Atiku Abubakar.

“Mr. Metuh asked Segun Showunmi to send his resume (what we call a CV) to me. Thereafter, Olisa Metuh asked Segun Showunmi to contact me for a job interview.

“I spoke to Segun Showunmi from California and negotiated his salary with him. I thereafter informed Waziri Atiku Abubakar, and Segun Showunmi was announced as his spokesman on the terms I negotiated with him.

“If there is any controversy or if anybody is using foul language to deny the obvious truth, then I urge the media to contact Mr. Olisa Metuh, who is an eyewitness and who was the one who recommended Segun Showunmi to me for employment as Waziri Atiku’s spokesman.

“After he was employed, Mr. Segun Showunmi returned to Mr. Olisa Metuh to thank him for recommending him to me.

“I do not want to be forced to publish documentary evidence. I would rather not. But if I have to, then I can. I urge anyone wanting to deny the obvious to think twice. Again, I repeat that if I am nothing at all, at least I am a meticulous record keeper.”

2027: We are not following Tinubu blindly – Supporters group

Disciples of Jagaban (DOJ), supporters group of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for 2027 elections has told critics that they are not supporting the President blindly, saying their support dated back to when he was nursing presidential ambition which he eventually achieved in 2023 presidential contest.

In a statement on Tuesday, the National Coordinator of DOJ, Abdulhakeem Adegoke Alawuje said: “It has become necessary to speak out, not out of blind loyalty, but in defence of truth and national interest. We have been working for Tinubu’s presidential ambition long before he made up his mind to contest in 2023 which he eventually won.

“The recent political charade by those who seek to disguise themselves under a newly branded coalition must not go unchallenged. Nigerians should not allow them to come and distort the good work that President Tinubu is doing now to make Nigeria great.

“We, the Tinubu Coalition of Support Groups, remain firm in our commitment to the Renewed Hope agenda. We will continue to seek guidance, build unity, and re-strategize in preparation for 2027.

“We are not blindly defending the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, but we strongly support his bold economic reforms — particularly the removal of the fraudulent fuel subsidy.

“It was a necessary decision, one that understandably caused temporary disruption. But such disruption is the cost of genuine reform. The foundation was rotten, and the President is now working to rebuild it. He is not a perfect man, but he is making visible efforts to rearrange and stabilize a broken system. We are already seeing signs of progress.

“To those parading themselves as an alternative coalition, let us be clear: your past records remain public. Former vice presidents, ex-governors, and ministers — titles alone do not grant you moral authority. Your political ideology reeks of recycled deceit and opportunism. Nigerians remember. We remember how the nation’s future was mortgaged by the same individuals now attempting to reposition themselves as saviours.

“If Nigerians remain silent out of fear, we risk allowing these same people to return to power and repeat the cycle of ruin. But we refuse to be afraid. We respect only those who deserve it, not those who have continually insulted the intelligence of the Nigerian people.

“This is a call to action for all Nigerians who love this country: do not be deceived. May Almighty Allah continue to protect, guide, and bless all who speak the truth.”
