Rivers at 58: Future beckons as the Treasure Base steadies

    By Markson Abibo

A struggle that began in the 1940s for the creation of Rivers Province found fulfilment in a nationwide broadcast on May 27, 1967, when Rivers State was carved out of East Central State, sparking joy on the streets and in the creeks of the long-awaited entity. From those early days in the hands of a young naval officer, Alfred Diete-Spiff who was the first Military Governor of the State to the current dispensation, where another naval officer is steadying the ship of state, the 58-year-old entity has grown as a centre of culture and arts, an oil and gas hub, a culinary showpiece, and a commercial centre that attracts and it invites.

Hooray! The Treasure Base is 58.

Rivers State is number 4 in terms of population in Nigeria with an estimate of over 9 million. The state abounds in human and material resources, with many state and federal-government owned educational and health institutions sited in its shores. Industry and commerce also thrived as deliberate efforts were made to attract investments, although most of the notable names of that era, PABOD RivBank, Hotel Olympia, Pan African Bank, Catering Rest House etc have since gone moribund. Today, Rivers State boasts 23 local government areas through which development continues to manifest at the grassroots. Urban development is also spreading to Ahoada, Degema, Abonnema, Okrika, Bori, and Omoku among other centres to ease the pressure on Port Harcourt.

It is in oil and gas that Rivers State has stood tallest as it accounts for a huge chunk of the estimated 37.2 billion barrels of proven oil reserves and 188 trillion standard cubic feet of natural gas in the Niger Delta. Nigeria’s first oil refinery was built in 1962 in the territory that would become Rivers State while the second one came up in 1978. The reason is simple. Rivers State accounted for nearly 60 per cent of the total oil production in Nigeria until the creation of Bayelsa State in 1996. Ironically it is also in oil that the Rivers State has faced its stiffest test of survival as the militant crisis that began in the 1990s cut production and has left in its wake, a legacy of crime and violence that has assumed political colouration.

This was what led to the vexatious but inevitable declaration of state of emergency on March 18 this year, resulting in the appointment of Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, (Rtd) as Administrator, for a six-month period. Vice Admiral Ibas who retired as Chief of Naval Staff in 2021, and served as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Ghana outlined his priority as the safety of lives and property.

“My mandate is clear: to restore law and order, stabilise the polity, and to create the necessary conditions for the full restoration of democratic institutions and representation,” he said in his maiden broadcast to the people of the state on March 20. “My appointment comes at a difficult and consequential moment in history. The political impasse of nearly two years in Rivers State has paralysed governance, desecrated democratic institutions, threatened security, and undermined the economic and social fabric of the state. As a son of the Niger Delta, I am one of you. And I recognise the weight of this moment, the expectations of the people, and the challenges that lie ahead.”

Slowly and steadily, the Administrator has safely navigated the affairs of the state. The first achievement is that the poisoned political climate did not deteriorate further and in fact, has improved. Although crime continues to be a challenge, people in the state can afford to go about their lives without the overhang of political violence.

The Administrator stabilised governance at the grassroots with the appointment of sole administrators for the 23 local government areas. He also approved the reconstitution of some Boards of Agencies, Commissions, and Parastatals.

Predictably, these actions may not have gone down well with some people who are riled by the suspension of the political structure that was proving toxic. Until such critics come up with viable alternatives to the step announced on March 18, the current dispensation will go on to live out its tenure and dreams to the betterment of Rivers State.

Thus, the 58th anniversary of the founding of Rivers State is a good time for all to take a deep breath and reflect on the past, present and future. The Administrator set the ball rolling by holding consultations with segments of society – elders, civil society, religious leaders – advocating reconciliation. Prolonged instability will derail development and set us back many years. For a state that is emerging from the years of militancy, the time is ripe for all those who wish it well to step back from inflammable rhetorics. The attitude of hindering and hurting will be like scoring an own goal. No state in Nigeria waits for us to destroy our lives and infrastructure. We set ourselves back and risk handing over a stunted state to our children and grandchildren. The messages from the streets and creeks on this 58th anniversary are clear: “Love Rivers State or leave her alone.” “We are one and will remain as one.”

To the cheers of well-wishers, the future beckons as the Treasure Base steadies.

  • Midterm assessment: Critical review of Cross River’s socio-economic struggles under Governor Otu

Midterm assessment: Critical review of Cross River’s socio-economic struggles under Governor Otu

    By Kalu Okoronkwo

As Cross River State marks Governor Bassey Otu’s second year in office on May 29, 2025, the occasion demands a critical evaluation of his administration’s performance under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

After two years in office, economic indicators in Cross River State shows a discontent as Otu’s optimism and the public’s pessimism grows starker.

Rather than celebrating transformative projects that uplift the state’s 3.7 million residents, Otu’s tenure has been overshadowed by allegations of resource mismanagement and socio-economic incompetence.

Perhaps the most telling verdict on Out’s’ two years in office, were the commissioning of an office for the Governor’s wife, alongside the commissioning of the Governor’s new office.

This exemplifies a troubling focus on non-essential projects. Compounded by Cross River’s dismal 34th ranking out of 36 states in VAT remittances for Q1 2025 as these actions highlight a leadership, disconnected from the people’s needs, prioritizing elite interests in a state grappling with poverty, unemployment, and economic stagnation.

Governor Otu’s administration has faced intense scrutiny for its emphasis on monument projects that offer little benefit to the masses. The renovation of the governor’s office, reportedly costing several billions in state funds, has been touted as a major accomplishment. More alarmingly, the commissioning of an office for the Governor’s wife, Bishop Mrs. Eyoanwan Otu, represents a significant liability, given that the office of the First Lady has no constitutional basis in Nigeria.

READ ALSO: Eight ways to easily spot a fake phone in Nigeria

This expenditure, justified under the guise of public service, diverts scarce resources from critical sectors like healthcare, education, and infrastructure. In a state where citizens struggle to access basic amenities, such projects reflect a leadership more concerned with elite comfort than public welfare.

This pattern of prioritizing personal interests over public good echoes historical examples of Nigerian governors who pursued self-serving agendas. Diepreye Alamieyeseigha of Bayelsa State (1999–2005), for instance, focused on grandiose projects that enriched a select few while neglecting widespread poverty. Otu’s focus on office renovations and the commissioning of a constitutionally unrecognized office risks mirroring this legacy, raising questions about his administration’s commitment to the people.

Cross River State’s abysmal 34th ranking out of 36 states in Value Added Tax (VAT) remittances for Q1 2025 underscores the administration’s economic shortcomings. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, Cross River generated a paltry N2.86 billion in VAT, compared to much smaller states like Ekiti, Ondo and 20 others.

This poor performance reflects a failure to stimulate economic activity, attract investments, or create a conducive environment for businesses. The state’s low VAT remittances stem from inadequate incentives for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and a lack of policies to boost economic vibrancy.

Cross River has failed to capitalize on its tourism and agricultural potential. The neglect of assets like the Obudu Cattle Ranch, exacerbated by the recent termination of its 25-year concession deal, and the underutilization of the Calabar Carnival highlight a lack of strategic vision. These missed opportunities have stifled economic growth and left Cross River languishing in the national VAT rankings.

The Otu administration’s handling of state finances further aggravates its economic challenges. Upon assuming office, Otu claimed to have inherited an empty treasury and decayed infrastructure from his predecessor, Ben Ayade. While the administration has paid N55 billion toward inherited debts and contractual obligations, its continued expensive borrowing for risky investments such as the acquisition of two new airplanes without clear repayment plans raises concerns.

Nigeria’s historical debt crisis, with external debt reaching $32 billion by 1995, serves as a warning of the dangers of fiscal recklessness. Cross River’s growing debt, coupled with low internally generated revenue (IGR) and VAT contributions, risks plunging the state into a financial crisis.

The administration’s focus on non-essential projects, such as the governor’s office renovation and a new office for the Governor’s wife, diverts funds from initiatives that could drive economic growth, such as agro-industrial development or tourism revitalization. States like Lagos have successfully utilized public-private partnerships (PPPs) to fund infrastructure and boost revenue, a model Cross River has yet to emulate.

Governor Otu must urgently redirect his administration’s priorities to address Cross River’s socio-economic challenges. The commissioning of a new office for the Governor’s wife’s, lacking in constitutional authority, is a misstep that squanders resources and undermines public trust. Instead, the administration should invest in sectors with high economic potential, such as tourism, infrastructure, health, agriculture, and education.

The state’s tourism assets, including the Obudu Cattle Ranch and Calabar Carnival, remain underutilized due to mismanagement and lack of investment. Cross River can draw inspiration from states like Lagos State, where Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has prioritized infrastructure and inclusive policies, which thrives through economic diversification and strategic partnerships.

This example demonstrates that visionary leadership can transform challenges into opportunities. Otu’s administration must implement policies that incentivize businesses, boost IGR, and improve VAT remittances to reverse the state’s economic decline.

Two years into Governor Bassey Otu’s tenure, Cross River State languishes under the APC’s poor leadership, epitomized by socio-economic incompetence and resource mismanagement. The administration’s 34th ranking in VAT remittances for Q1 2025, coupled with its focus on non-essential projects like the governor’s office renovation and the commissioning of the constitutionally unrecognized office for the Governor’s wife, has left citizens grappling with poverty and unemployment.

The APC, through Otu’s leadership, has failed to deliver the dividends of democracy, prioritizing elite interests over the welfare of the masses. The people of Cross River deserve better leadership that halts fiscal recklessness, invests in economic growth, and addresses their pressing needs.

Without a drastic shift, the APC’s legacy in Cross River, under Otu, will be one of unfulfilled promises and squandered potential.

APC chieftain defends Senator Sani over ‘harmonise’ controversy

Amid growing social media commentary and public backlash, All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain and security expert Abayomi Nurain Mumuni has stepped forward in defense of Senator Sani Musa, whose recent attempt to define the term “harmonise” during a Senate session sparked controversy.

In a statement issued on Saturday by his media aide, Rasheed Abubakar, Mumuni dismissed the uproar as unnecessary, attributing it to misinterpretation and a deliberate attempt to ridicule rather than understand.

“The recent discussions surrounding Senator Sani Musa’s attempt to define the term ‘harmonize’ during a Senate session have prompted various speculations and misunderstandings among the public,” the statement noted. “It is imperative to clarify these misconceptions to ensure a well-informed discourse.”

Mumuni also highlighted Musa’s academic credentials, describing him as a graduate of a reputable Nigerian university with a commendable academic record that reflects his commitment to education and public service.

“His qualifications and expertise affirm his capability as a Senator, and it’s essential not to undermine his contributions based on unfounded opinions,” Mumuni stated.

He further argued that the uproar over the senator’s definition was misdirected, stressing that the term “harmonize” has multiple meanings depending on the context in which it is used.

“This is a common linguistic occurrence, and even elementary students are aware that definitions may vary across different fields and branches of study,” he noted.

Mumuni dismissed the ridicule as “childish” and urged critics to rise above petty debates. “Speculating that a sitting senator ‘failed’ to define a term as fundamental as ‘harmonize’ reflects more on the eagerness to criticize than on an accurate understanding of the matter,” he said.

“This notion is, quite frankly, childish and diverts attention from the substantive issues at hand that require robust legislative discussions.”

He concluded by calling for a more constructive approach to national dialogue.

“We urge the public, media, and fellow senators to focus on more pertinent issues within our governance and legislative processes rather than engaging in trivial debates,” Mumuni urged.

“Let us all strive for a mature and constructive dialogue that benefits our democracy and the citizens we serve.”

  • Abia will go to APC in 2027, says ex-Rep Onuigbo

Abia will go to APC in 2027, says ex-Rep Onuigbo

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former member of the House of Representatives from Abia State, Hon. Sam Onuigbo, has expressed confidence that the State will go to the APC come 2027.

Onuigbo, in an interview, attributed this to the strategic political messaging deployed by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, who represents Bende Federal Constituency.

He said the Deputy Speaker has upped the ante in communicating the achievements of the President Bola Tinubu’s administration to Abians, giving special attention to multitude of disillusioned People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leaders and members in the state articulated under his project, Renewed Hope Partners.

He said the agenda of the Deputy Speaker has had far-reaching effects on how Abians view and perceive what the administration has been doing so far,  succeeding in giving shelter and anchor to a sizable number of PDP leaders in the state, whom he said are now defecting to APC in droves.

Onuigbo, who represented Ikwuano/Umuahia North-South Federal Constituency in the ninth Assembly, disclosed that as a major fallout from the engagement spearheaded by Benjamin Kalu, some founding members of the PDP in Abia Central and Abia North have defected to the APC, while others are seriously gravitating towards the party.

He said the administration of President Tinubu was going through the crucibles of governance to birth a new nation.

Onuigbo said the administration has done well despite taking off in what he described as a very rough weather.

He said the decisions taking by the administration, though tough were necessary for moving the country forward.

“This administration has done well by stabilizing the country, the economy and opening up tremendous opportunities for its citizens,” he said.

  • Enugu APC faults Arthur Eze over claims on Tinubu’s endorsement of Mbah

Enugu APC faults Arthur Eze over claims on Tinubu’s endorsement of Mbah

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State has described as misleading and completely baseless the recent statement by Anambra-born businessman Prince Arthur Eze that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has endorsed Governor Peter Mbah for a second term in office.

Eze, during the second anniversary of Governor Mbah in Enugu on May 29, said that President Tinubu was happy with the Governor’s performances in Enugu and endorsed him for a second term.

But, in a strong rebuttal at the weekend by the publicity secretary of the party in Enugu State, Mr Titus Ezeagu, the APC dismissed Eze’s claims as “personal opinion driven by self interest rather than political reality.

“Prince Arthur Eze is not a member of the APC. He is neither a spokesperson for President Tinubu nor has he ever played any official role in the President’s campaign or administration,” the statement reads.

The party reiterated that Arthur Eze has no mandate whatsoever to speak on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, emphasizing that Arthur Eze is not a member of the APC.

“Let it be made clear: the president has not made any statement; public or private, endorsing any governor

in any state for a second term, including Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State,” it continued.

The APC further advised individuals like Arthur Eze to desist from making pronouncements that could undermine the democratic and electoral process in Enugu State and the country in general.

“We urge Prince Eze to concentrate on his business ventures and allow the democratic process to unfold in accordance with the constitution without resort to spreading cheap propaganda which will put Mr President in bad light nationally and internationally.

“His attempt to prop up Governor Mbah’s anti-people governance using the name of President Tinubu is not only false but a manifest move to once more undermine the democratic process in Enugu and Nigeria in general,” it said.

The party concluded by reaffirming its commitment to building a strong political alternative for the people of Enugu State, emphasizing that endorsement for any second term would come through the electoral process.

“We at APC Enugu State under the able leadership of the high performing Chief Uche Geoffrey Nwakaibie, the Hon Minister of Innovation Science and Technology and leader APC Enugu state shall continue to stand firmly behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his Renewed Hope Agenda, and we remain focused in giving Enugu State voters a credible alternative to the current PDP-led mal-administration come 2027,” it concluded.

Security breach: I am with you, Kogi Gov assures Yagba West residents

Kogi Governor Usman Ododo has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to restoring peace and ensuring the security of lives and property in Yagba West Local Government Area.

This assurance was conveyed during a high-level security meeting with stakeholders from Yagba West LGA, led by the Chairman of the Local Government Council, Hon. Tosin Olokun.

The Governor was represented at the meeting by Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo.

He emphasised that his administration is not just lamenting over recent security breach in the Local Government Area but is already taking decisive actions to tackle the situation. “We are confronting the threats head-on, and our actions are making life unbearable for the criminal elements,” he stated.

He commended the Chairman, other local officials, and security agencies for their commitment and proactive approach in addressing the challenges. The Governor assured residents that his government will continue to provide all necessary support to ensure peace and stability in the area.

The Governor said:“You did not vote for me to give excuses when your security is threatened, but to take decisive actions to protect you. That is exactly what I doing at the moment and we won’t relent until we dislodge every agent of insecurity in Yagba West and in the entire Kogi State.

We also thank the National Security Adviser and all the service chiefs for mobilizing logistics to deal with the security threat in some parts of the state. Our local hunters also did very well. They are coordinated, brave and patriotic. We have sent a clear signal to criminals that Kogi State is not a place to practice their trade”.

In his remarks, Tosin Olokun expressed deep appreciation to the Governor for his unwavering support and swift response to the security challenges in Yagba West.

He acknowledged the government’s provision of logistics and other resources to support local security operations and urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with the Community Security Initiative of the state government.

The Chairman also called on political actors to avoid politicizing security issues, stressing that the safety and well-being of the people should remain a collective priority. He further commended the Governor for ongoing infrastructural developments in Yagba West, which, he noted, contribute significantly to community stability and growth.

  • Anti-Tinubu coalition doomed to fail-Onjeh

    Anti-Tinubu coalition doomed to fail-Onjeh

Former All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial candidate for Benue South, Comrade Daniel Onjeh, has congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the occasion of his second year in office.

He declared the alliance against the President is a failed project from the outset.

He described it as bankrupt venture destined to collapse under the weight of its contradictions and selfish motivations.

In a statement on Thursday, he said: “The country has been set on a path of progress and prosperity, even though significant strides are still required in tackling insecurity and corruption.”

Onjeh, who contested against former Senate President David Mark in the 2015 General Elections—resulting in a historic rerun—affirmed that no Nigerian leader in the Fourth Republic has matched President Tinubu in terms of policy clarity, direction, firmness of purpose and the political courage to implement transformative reforms in the face of adversity.

According to him, the Tinubu administration stands out for its resolve to rescue the Nigerian economy and restructure the nation’s governance framework for sustainable development.

“Since 1999, we have not had a President with such a bold, clear-cut policy thrust and the grit to pursue his reform agenda despite formidable obstacles and disinformation campaigns,” Onjeh declared. “President Tinubu has proven beyond doubt that he is not in office to engage in politics as usual. He is in office to rebuild the foundations of our economy, restore discipline in governance, and chart a progressive course for generations to come.”

Onjeh further emphasised that one of the unique strengths of the Tinubu administration in its first two years has been its active and effective feedback mechanism, which pays close attention to the sentiments and plights of the Nigerian people.

He observed that the administration’s willingness to revise policies in response to credible feedback demonstrates leadership sensitivity, maturity and a genuine commitment to democratic principles.

“This administration has a listening ear,” Onjeh stressed. “It has, on numerous occasions, made essential policy adjustments based on well-articulated concerns raised by citizens, civil society organisations, and sector experts. That is the hallmark of responsive leadership—not the dictatorship that the President’s detractors are trying to portray.”

Speaking as an economist, Onjeh likened the Tinubu-led reforms to a painful but necessary surgical procedure—initially uncomfortable, yet essential for the rebirth of a healthier, more robust national economy. He remarked that decades of economic mismanagement, systemic corruption, and rent-seeking politics have inflicted deep wounds on Nigeria’s economy—wounds that can only be healed through tough, courageous decisions.

“Nigerians must understand that we are in a transitional period—akin to national economic surgery. Yes, the process is painful, but ultimately we shall emerge stronger, more self-reliant, and better positioned for growth,” Onjeh explained. “Let us endure the temporary hardship with the knowledge that a bountiful reward and long-lasting relief lie ahead.”

He further noted that all major presidential candidates in the last general elections pledged to remove fuel subsidies.

He challenged them to state what they would have done differently had they won. “They would have removed fuel subsidies as well,” he declared. “It appears that these candidates, who now lead the so-called anti-Tinubu coalition, simply want to seize power without a clear plan of action.”

He urged Nigerians not to be deceived by these politicians. “As a former President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), I call on Nigerian youths to support Tinubu’s re-election, as it appears he will be the last of his generation to lead Nigeria,” he stated.

He assured young Nigerians that the President is laying the groundwork for their future leadership. He, therefore, urged them to protect the administration and offer the necessary support for it to steer the nation forward.

Onjeh, who also served as Chairman of the Governing Board of the Projects Development Institute (PRODA) in Enugu, called on youths to disregard the propaganda of the so-called anti-Tinubu coalition, which he described as a gathering of failed politicians desperate to regain relevance and resume looting public resources.

“These politicians have nothing new to offer. They are a spent force whose sole ambition is to return to power and further enrich themselves and their families at the expense of the suffering masses. The youth must see through their deceptive antics and reject them emphatically,” he warned.

He emphasised that the Tinubu administration has consistently rolled out youth-focused policies, citing the recently launched student loan scheme, technology hubs, and entrepreneurship initiatives as examples of programmes designed with the future in mind.

Onjeh asserted that President Tinubu is consciously laying a solid foundation for a generational shift in leadership—one that will empower young Nigerians to take full charge of the nation’s destiny.

“President Tinubu is building a new political and economic template for youth leadership. He is not merely preparing a seat at the table for young Nigerians—he is building the table with them in mind. That is the kind of foresight and generational responsibility Nigeria requires at this critical juncture,” he added.

Comrade Onjeh reiterated that the anti-Tinubu coalition is a political backwater—a conclave of expired, recycled, and ideologically bankrupt individuals whose relevance has long faded.

“The coalition is a political trash can where expired ambitions and worn-out ideologies are dumped preparatory to transportation to the dumb site of political oblivion. It has failed even before it began, and its brief denouement will be written in 2027 when the President secures another victory for the progressive cause,” he declared.

He urged Nigerians not to be swayed by the orchestrated noise of the opposition, but rather to assess the President’s performance based on facts, sincerity of purpose, and tangible policy outcomes.

According to him, no amount of media propaganda or coordinated street protests can ultimately diminish the positive impact of the Tinubu administration’s reforms.

“Rome was not built in a day,” Onjeh reminded. “Transformation takes time, sacrifice, and collective will. We must not allow those who brought the nation to its knees to hijack our national narrative simply because they lost out and are uncomfortable with change.”

He urged Tinubu to intensify efforts in addressing critical national issues, particularly the entrenched corruption in the National Assembly.

He called on the President to direct his attention towards federal government agencies, ensuring they adhere strictly to the core mandates for which they were established.

“The longstanding corruption that has plagued the National Assembly since 1999 must be addressed. Allegations of budget padding and embezzlement through constituency and zonal intervention projects must not be swept under the carpet,” he asserted.

Onjeh condemned the persistent abuse of the budgeting process, whereby some lawmakers exploit their oversight powers to manipulate constituency project allocations in Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), thereby diverting public funds for personal gain.

“There is brazen corruption in some quarters of the National Assembly, particularly concerning the misuse of constituency projects. Some lawmakers treat these projects as personal ATMs rather than as instruments of development for their constituencies. The President must shine a spotlight on these abuses and bring the perpetrators to justice,” he stated.

He further noted that although the Tinubu administration has released significant sums to state governments and the legislature from savings derived from the removal of fuel subsidies, the intended relief has not reached the grassroots.

Onjeh argued that no nation can prosper under the burden of corruption. Citing Lee Kuan Yew’s transformative leadership in Singapore, he insisted that President Tinubu must tackle corruption decisively.

“Once you have economic leakages, your economic policies, no matter how laudable, cannot stand. The ₦1 billion and ₦2 billion allocated for Reps Members and Senators respectively, for constituency projects through government agencies could have transformed many communities had the funds been used for their intended purpose. The opposition would then have no excuse to hide behind popular suffering and form a coalition to unseat the President,” he stated.

Don’t focus only on Tinubu, hold your governors accountable too, APC chieftain tells Nigerians

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ambassador Abayomi Nurain Mumuni, has urged Nigerians to extend their demand for accountability beyond President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to include governors and other elected public officials.

Mumuni made the call while assessing the performance of the Tinubu administration, two years into its tenure. In a statement signed by his media aide, Rasheed Abubakar, he emphasised the need for citizens to also scrutinize the actions of state governors, senators, and other representatives.

“While it is important to hold the president accountable for his policies and decisions, we must not neglect the role of our state and local leaders,” he said. “Governors and legislators significantly influence the welfare of our communities, and they too must be held to account.”

Reflecting on the mixed public reaction to Tinubu’s second anniversary in office, Mumuni noted that Nigerians have expressed a wide range of views, both positive and critical, about the administration’s performance.

“As we mark two years since the inauguration of our President, I have reflected on the myriad of commentaries some commendatory, others critical. It is clear that opinions are diverse, capturing the good, the bad, and the ugly,” he stated.

He reiterated the importance of accountability at all levels of government, stressing that meaningful progress can only be achieved when leaders at every tier are held accountable to the people.

“While it is crucial to hold our President accountable for his policies and decisions, I urge all Nigerians to also direct scrutiny towards the leaders who serve at the state and local levels. Governors and legislators play a pivotal role in shaping the well-being of our communities, and it is essential for us to thoroughly examine their performance and commitment to their constituents.

“It is unfortunate that the general discourse often overlooks the significant power dynamics between the federal and state governments. Citizens often hold the President accountable for all challenges faced in our society, neglecting the responsibilities of state governors and local legislators.

“Each level of government has its duties, mandates, and responsibilities, and it is incumbent upon us, the citizens, to demand equal accountability from all our elected officials.

“To foster meaningful dialogue and positive change, I encourage Nigerians to ask pertinent questions regarding governance in their respective states. What measures have been implemented by your governor to improve healthcare, education, and infrastructure? How effectively are your legislators advocating for policies that benefit your communities? These are the inquiries we need to direct towards our local representatives.

“By holding our state leaders accountable, we can create a more comprehensive and constructive narrative about our nation’s governance. It is only through collective scrutiny of all levels of leadership that we can pave the way for genuine progress and development.

“As we celebrate this anniversary, let us not forget that our democracy thrives on participation, dialogue, and accountability. I urge all Nigerians to engage actively in discussions about governance, ensuring that our voices are heard and that we demand excellence from all who hold public office.

“Together, let us work towards a Nigeria where every leader is held to the highest standards of accountability, fostering a nation that truly reflects the will and well-being of its people.”
