  • SDP condemns PDP Wadata plaza crisis

SDP condemns PDP Wadata plaza crisis

    …calls for protection of democracy

The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Shehu Gabam, on Wednesday condemned Tuesday’s crisis at Wadata Plaza, the National Secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in Abuja.

Gabam described it as a “brazen display of anarchy” that threatens the foundations of Nigeria’s democracy.

In a statement made available to reporters in Abuja, Gabam said some people were mobilized to suppress dissenting voices, warning that such actions erode public confidence and weaken the rule of law.

He said, “The spectacle, witnessed by many, suggests a disturbing trend in which state structures are repurposed to silence dissent. Such actions erode public confidence and threaten the very foundations of our nascent democracy. It is imperative that the rule of law be upheld, and that no entity feels above the constitutional order that safeguards citizens’ rights”.

The SDP chairman also criticized security agencies, accusing them of harassing political opponents instead of protecting lives and property.

According to him, “The security agencies, whose duty is to protect lives and property, have become instruments of harassment and intimidation against political opponents

“This shift undermines the principle of law enforcement and fuels public fear. When those sworn to defend the nation target dissenting voices, the social contract weakens, and the democratic fabric frays. Citizens deserve assurance that security forces will act impartially, safeguarding all Nigerians regardless of political affiliation and fostering lasting trust and national unity”.

He emphasised that impartial law enforcement is essential to fostering trust, national unity, and a stable democratic society.

Gabam further called attention to ongoing security challenges, including the death of a Brigadier General in Borno State and the abduction of students in Kebbi State, urging the President to prioritize these crises.

“The nation is in mourning, and decisive action is needed to address these pressing challenges,” he said.

Highlighting what he described as a dangerous pattern of political maneuvering, Gabam warned against the abuse of constitutional processes to silence opposition, pointing out that such tactics have previously destabilized the SDP and now threaten other parties.

Gabam recalled that, “President Bola Tinubu once stood as a leading figure within the opposition, championing democratic principles that enabled his ascent to office through the merger of ACN, CPC, ANPP, and other parties.

He counselled that the sacrifices made in pursuit of democratic governance should not be eroded during President Tinubu’s tenure, saying that, “It is upon him to uphold the values that paved his path, fostering a climate where dissent is respected and unity is prioritized over partisan advantage for all.

He pointed out that the challenges confronting the nation should serve as a catalyst for unity, rather than an excuse for division.

  • APC to Turaki: Your call for foreign invasion is reckless, unpatriotic

APC to Turaki: Your call for foreign invasion is reckless, unpatriotic

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned the call for foreign invasion of Nigeria by the new factional Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Tanimu Turaki over insecurity in parts of the country.

Mr Felix Morka, the APC National Publicity Secretary condemned the call in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

Morka urged the international community to dismiss the call by Turaki.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Turaki while addressing newsmen over the crisis rocking the PDP, called on foreign powers to intervene in Nigeria to save it from alleged “Christian genocide”.

He also said the call had become necessary to protect the country’s democracy.

“Turaki’s call for foreign invasion of Nigeria was reckless and unpatriotic and should not be taken seriously.

“For a man declared national chairman barely 72 hours ago by a faction of his deeply fractured party, Turaki looked and sounded desperate, at his wit’s end,”he said.

The APC spokesman described Turaki as confused.

He said Nigerians expected that Turaki would set himself on an urgent peace-building mission to bring his party’s warring factions together in dialogue, towards finding possible pathways to peace and reconciliation.

He noted that instead, Turaki’s first official act as PDP’s factional chairman was to call for foreign invasion of Nigeria as a solution to the self-inflicted internal crisis of his PDP.

Morka said his call was a dangerous threat to national security and sovereignty, adding that it was a disgraceful and unpatriotic call.

He recalled that under the PDP’s 16 years in power, with its subversion of opposition parties, there was never a call for foreign invasion of Nigeria as a solution to crisis within opposition parties of that era.

“Turaki’s call is not only an admission of PDP’s incapacity to manage its internal contradictions, it must be taken as a final certification of its demise.

“We trust the international community to dismiss the PDP’s disgraceful and unpatriotic call as a pitiful distraction from the failure of its internal democracy and embarrassing disintegration.

“The heightened desperation of the PDP and other opposition leaders is now clear for all to see. Turaki’s call shows how far they are willing to go.

“Even to the extent of actively seeking destructive intervention of foreign powers on Nigerian soil in order to serve their sinister political agenda,” Morka said.

He urged Nigerians to stand firm in support of the APC, and the visionary leadership of President Bola Tinubu as he continued the task of building progress and prosperity in all areas of our national life.

  • Ogunbiyi as Osun APC’s best foot forward

Ogunbiyi as Osun APC’s best foot forward

    By Kayode Akanni

As the Osun State gubernatorial election slated for 2026 draws near, the question on the lips of most party members is: Will APC go into the election united or disjointed? Many members worry that the ensuing primary election may further impair the party’s fortune if not handled with tact. The concern is not out of place as the race for the party’s ticket is already brewing internal wrangling among contestants. Many party members are of the view that the defeat suffered by the party in 2022 was the result of the schism in the party. According to them, the immediate past governor of the state, Chief Isiaka Oyetola, lost the election to Senator Ademola Adeleke despite having the power of incumbency, not because of non-performance but principally because the party did not go into the election as one entity as the party splintered into groups. The splinter groups worked against the interest of the party with the result that the party which had been in power for 12 years in the state lost to the rival Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

There are genuine fears that the party may already be toeing the old path as the jostle for the party’s ticket by governorship hopefuls is already pitting party members against one another. While some leaders are trying to downplay this, many members are worried that the fate that befell the party in 2022 may be repeated unless leaders work towards the emergence of a bridge-building candidate who is acceptable to all party members across the state, a candidate who can rally every tendency together and position the party for victory at the polls in 2026.

Many are agreed that the governorship aspirant whose candidature can secure electoral victory for the party in the ensuing electoral contest is Dr Akinade Ogunbiyi.

Ogunbiyi is a consummate businessman and grassroots politician who is passionate about the development of Osun State. He is also a philanthropist whose tentacles spread to every nook and cranny of the State of the Livingspring. Ogunbiyi knows the whole of the state as he knows the back of his hand and identifies with the aspirations of various communities. Having worked with different people from various backgrounds in the state, he is so loved by the grassroots as well as the well-heeled that the mention of his name lights up the faces of people across the state. A man well known and respected by almost all of the people vying for the party’s ticket, Ogunbiyi’s emergence as APC candidate would result in tension simmering and everyone queuing up behind him to achieve the overall vision of wresting the state from the claws of the PDP.

While declaring his interest to fly the flag of APC in the 2026 election, Ogunbiyi said, “I stand as a unifying factor among all the candidates, and I believe that by the special grace of God, if I emerge, they will rally round to support me and the progressives,” Ogunbiyi said.

When asked by journalists what he would do should he fail to get the ticket, he said he would not begrudge anyone but would rather remain committed to the party’s desire to reclaim the state.

Ogunbiyi’s antecedent is the most inspiring among all those angling to get the party’s ticket.

The governorship hopeful believes that with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s policy direction, APC is best suited to take the country out of economic woods. He is also of the opinion that unless Osun State aligns with the party at the centre, it may not really experience the much desired development. So, as a loyal party man, he has been working with other members of the party in all the constituencies to improve the lot of the party and increase its chances of winning the governorship election.

A builder of institutions, Ogunbiyi built the Mutual Benefits Assurance Plc from a one-room outfit into a multinational organization that has won accolades from every part of the globe. The company, which he registered in 1995, became a household name within the spate of 10 years. Over time, Mutual Benefits Assurance Plc. has evolved into a conglomerate consisting of value-adding companies with diverse interests in various sectors of the Nigerian economy through investments, strategic alliances and partnerships. Some of the subsidiaries are; Mutual Benefits Life Assurance Limited, Mutual Benefits Micro-finance Bank, Mutual Benefits Homes and Properties Limited, Mutual Benefits Assurance Company, Liberia, and Mutual Benefits Assurance Niger SA, Niger. The company is a leading brand in the Nigerian Insurance Industry with over 5000 employees.

A builder of societies and nations, Dr Ogunbiyi has been contributing to the development of Osun State for over two decades. He served as the Osun Development Association Vice Chairman for 18 years. The platform offered him the opportunity of having a profound understanding of what goes on within the state as well as its developmental challenges. Through the ODA, Ogunbiyi has been supporting good and measurable development initiatives geared towards impacting positively on Osun State and its people.

At the national level, Ogunbiyi’s impact on the economy is legendary. Apart from being a towering giant in the insurance industry, he has contributed to the financial sector, the real estate sector, mining sector, transportation sector, oil and gas sector and the agriculture sector. A believer in human capital development, Ogunbiyi has mentored men and women who have become industry giants. And through his weekly column in the Nigerian Tribune he has encouraged industry and promoted entrepreneurship.

At the sub-regional level, Ogunbiyi’s Mutual Benefits Group was instrumental to the rebound of Liberia after the internecine civil war, which spanned almost 10 years.

As put by Ogunbiyi himself, “After the Liberian civil war was over, Mutual Benefits was in the country to help it get back on its feet. We worked with the government to practically rebuild the economy. We worked with the government to resuscitate the transportation sector. We did so many other things. We worked with the government to make the mining sector of the country viable. Today, the country is doing so well. If I could do that for another country, why should I not do more for my state? For me, it is not about ambition but about vision. I know that the state can be better than it is if it has visionary leaders. I am visionary and I can turn around the fortune of the state.”

Talking about his motivation for seeking to govern Osun State, Ogunbiyi said he is motivated by the desire to give the state a fresh start.

His words: “Osun State is too endowed for the people to be poor. Osun has 26 viable mineral resources but over the years, we have had leaders who lacked the capacity and managerial skills to turn these God-given gifts to wealth for the benefits of the citizenry.

Read Also: Babaeko at Nigerian Marketing Award:

“What we shall do is to convert all these resources to wealth for the people. With that, we will not have any reason to wait for allocation from Abuja before we get things done.

“I know how to turn the potentials of Osun State into real wealth. I know how to create wealth. I know how to create value. I am passionate about the state and I want to see it get better and the people to live better.”

He added, “The strength of Osun State is agriculture but there is no motivation for farmers to turn it into big business. We will encourage subsistent farmers and promote mechanized farming. We will set up marketing boards and build additional silos where farm produce could be preserved.

“If I am elected governor, education will become a priority and the state will regain its lost glory in education. We shall provide free healthcare services for children, pregnant women and the aged. We shall retool the civil service and properly motivate the workforce for productivity. Our coming into office will be the beginning of a new era for Osun State.”

It is the considered opinion of many APC stakeholders that with Ogunbiyi’s high level of acceptance by all the tendencies in the party, his popularity among the voting public and the robustness of his plans for the state, the party will be putting its best foot forward by settling for the Ile Ogbo, Osun West-born business and political titan.

  • Move by Senate to change procedures for electing Presiding Officers, others suffers set back

Move by Senate to change procedures for electing Presiding Officers, others suffers set back

The move by the leadership of the Senate to amend its Standing Orders 2023 by changing procedures for the emergence of presiding officers, suffered set back on Tuesday.

The proposed amendments to standing rules of the Senate faced resistance immediately after being presented by Deputy Leader of the Senate, Senator Lola Ashiru (Kwara South), who stood in for the Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti Central) .

Senate leadership had in the proposed amendment, which was later stood down, listed only four categories of senators to number four among as those eligible to run for the position of Senate President or Deputy Senate President at  inauguration.

The proposal, which was  contained in proposed provisions for nomination of Senators to serve as Presiding Officers, states that any Senator who has served as President of the Senate before comes first, followed by any other Senators who must have served as Deputy President of the Senate before and followed by those who have served as principal officers before, after which ranking, in terms of number of years spent in the Senate as a Senator, follows.

The provision states: “Nomination of Senators to serve as Presiding Officers shall be in accordance with the ranking of Senators and shall be strictly adhered to.

“In determining ranking , the following Order shall apply ÷ (i) Former President of the Senate, (ii) Former Deputy President of the Senate, (iii) Former Principal Officers of the Senate, (iv) Senators returning based on number of times re-elected, (v) Senators who had been members of the House of Representatives and ( vi) In the absence of (i) to (v), Senators elected as Senators for the First Time can vie for the positions.”

Apparently dissatisfied with the proposal, one of the ranking Senators by number years spent in the Senate so far, Senator Danjuma Goje (Gombe Central), kicked against the move.

Goje, in kicking against the said, it was wrong to place a first timer, appointed principal position on the template of quota system, above others, particularly somebody like him serving his fourth term in the Senate.

On the strength of Senator Goje’s explanation, the amendment, was hurriedly stood down as advised by the Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who presided over the session.

    APC postpones Gov. Kefas reception

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has postponed the reception of Taraba Governor Agbu Kefas scheduled for Wednesday, November 19, 2025.

The party, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary,  Felix Morka in Abuja on Tuesday, said a new date for the reception will be announced later.

Morka said the postponement was as a mark of honor to members of the Armed Forces and citizens killed recently by forces of terror and respect for victims of related incidents of abductions especially of 25 female pupils in Kebbi State.

Your call for foreign invasion reckless, unpatriotic, APC blasts PDP

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has described the call for foreign invasion of Nigeria by the new factional chairman of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Tanimu Turaki, as reckless and unpatriotic.

The factional leader of the PDP, while addressing newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday over the crisis ravaging his party, called on foreign powers to intervene in Nigeria to save the country from alleged “Christian genocide” and to protect democracy.

Reacting to the call, APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka, in a statement Tuesday night in Abuja, strongly condemned the opposition for making such shameless and dangerous calls.

Dismissing Turaki, the APC spokesman said, “For a man declared National Chairman barely 72 hours ago by a faction of his deeply fractured party, Turaki looked and sounded desperate, at his wits’ end, confused, incoherent, and grossly lacking in the stamina and capacity to manage his party’s crisis.

“Nigerians expected that Turaki would set himself on an urgent peace-building mission to bring his party’s warring factions together in dialogue towards finding possible pathways to peace and reconciliation.

“Instead, Turaki’s first official act as factional chairman was his call for foreign invasion of Nigeria as a solution to the self-inflicted internal crisis of his PDP. That is as shameless as it is a dangerous threat to national security and sovereignty.”

Morka argued further that, “Under the PDP’s 16 years in power, with its ruthless subversion of opposition parties, there was never a call for foreign invasion of Nigeria as a solution to the crisis within opposition parties of that era. Turaki’s call is not only an admission of the party’s incapacity to manage its internal contradictions. It must be taken as a final certification of the PDP’s demise.”

The governing party then called on the international community to ignore Turaki’s call, insisting that the opposition call was only seeking destructive intervention of foreign powers on Nigerian soil in order to serve their sinister political agenda.

“We trust the international community to dismiss the PDP’s disgraceful and unpatriotic call as a pitiful distraction from the failure of its internal democracy and embarrassing disintegration. The heightened desperation of the PDP and other opposition leaders is now clear for all to see. Turaki’s call shows how far they are willing to go, even to the extent of actively seeking the destructive intervention of foreign powers on Nigerian soil to serve their sinister political agenda.”

The party then urged Nigerians to stand firm in support of APC and the visionary leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as we continue the arduous task of building progress and prosperity in all areas of our national life.

  • Tinubu laying foundational pillars of judicial rebirth – Okechukwu

Tinubu laying foundational pillars of judicial rebirth – Okechukwu

A foundation member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Osita Okechukwu, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for echoing the timeless spirit of the Magna Carta and urged him to firmly enforce the principle as he patriotically articulated at the Nigerian Judges’ Conference.

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday, Okechukwu noted that Clause 40 of the 1215 Magna Carta, which the President highlighted, remains one of the most celebrated foundations of the rule of law.

The clause states, “To no one will we sell, to no one will we deny or delay right or justice.”

The former director general of Voice of Nigeria (VON) emphasized that this principle endures as the global standard of the rule of law, which ensures that justice is fair, accessible, and never dependent on wealth, influence, or royal favour.

He commended Tinubu for his forthright remarks at the Judges’ Conference, where he openly acknowledged public concern about delays, integrity deficits, and access to justice within the Nigerian judicial process.

President Tinubu stated, “We must acknowledge, with candour, that public perception of the judicial process has not always been favourable. Citizens have expressed frustration at delays, concerns about integrity, and anxiety over access to justice.

“These perceptions, whether wholly justified or not, cannot be ignored. They call upon us to reflect, to reform, and to restore. Ultimately, justice does not exist for the Bench or the Bar; it exists for the people. Their faith in the judicial process is the foundation of our national stability.”

Okechukwu noted that President Tinubu has already set in motion the foundational pillars of judicial rebirth—reforms, capacity building, and modernization. What is now required, he said, is a decisive combination of discipline, a relentless war against corruption, welfare for the masses, and deep, consistent implementation of the President’s vision.

He concluded that fully enforcing the spirit of the Magna Carta would not only strengthen Nigeria’s democracy but also restore enduring public confidence in the justice system.

2027: We are open to alliance, NNPP tells PDP, APC, others

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has said the party is open to an alliance with any political party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party said an alliance became necessary for the success of any political party in any election.

Speaking in Ibadan, the national coordinator of the Kwankwaso National Movement, Hon. Ahmad Sawaba, said NNPP remained a formidable force in Nigerian politics, built on principles of justice, equity, and progress.

According to him, the party is committed to strengthening internal democracy, fostering unity, and presenting a cohesive front to Nigerians.

He maintained that the 2027 election is not just a political contest but a movement to reclaim the hopes of ordinary Nigerians.

Kano APC chieftain begs Akpabio, Barau over $10m bribery allegation

A Kano-based chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mal. Alwan Hassan has apologised to the leadership of the Senate for wrongfully accusing them of receiving $10 million to stall the confirmation of Ramat Abdullahi as the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

He particularly apologised to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and his Deputy, Senator Barau Jibrin, admitting that the allegation against them and the leadership of the upper chamber of the National Assembly was “not only untrue but also unfair and uncharitable to both the National Assembly and its leadership.”

Last month, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu sent a letter to the Senate seeking Ramat’s confirmation as NERC’s chairman, but after over a month since the letter was read and deliberated upon at plenary, the Senate is yet to announce the confirmation of the nominee.

The development led to a group of party loyalists from Kano State staging a protest at the National Assembly, while several individuals demanded immediate confirmation of Ramat.

Hassan, who joined others to protest the delay, accused the Senate leadership of deliberately stalling the confirmation.

Tendering an unreserved apology at a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, Hassan said his earlier action was propelled by the information available to him at that time, adding that he has since found out that the allegation lacked fact.

According to him, “I referenced a claim alleging that they received $10 million in bribes to stall Engr. Ramat’s confirmation. That allegation came from conversations I had while trying to understand the issues.

“I have since come to realise that the claim was not only untrue but unfair and uncharitable to both the National Assembly and its leadership.

“I therefore retract that statement fully and unreservedly, and I apologise to the National Assembly and its leadership for those accusations.

“I understand the seriousness of governance, particularly the critical role the parliament plays in our democracy,” he added.

The APC leader then appealed to the Senate to confirm Ramat for the job as requested by President Tinubu.

“I understand the seriousness of governance, particularly the critical role the parliament plays in our democracy. I do not take that role for granted. And it is precisely because of that respect that I once again, like Oliver Twist, appeal—humbly and sincerely—to the good conscience of our distinguished National Assembly to please take a second look at the case of Engr. “I genuinely believe he is a worthy leader who can help transform the regulation of Nigeria’s energy sector,” he concluded.

  • Osun 2026: INEC urges political parties to conduct lawful primaries

Osun 2026: INEC urges political parties to conduct lawful primaries

Dr Mutiu Agboke, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Osun, has urged political parties in the state to conduct their primaries in accordance with the law.

Agboke, in a statement by INEC Public Relations Officer, Olurode Musa, on Monday in Osogbo, said the conduct of party primaries in line with the law was important ahead of the 2026 governorship election in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that INEC has fixed Aug. 8, 2026 for the governorship election in the state.

The REC appealed to all registered political parties in the state to strictly adhere to the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022, the Commission’s Guidelines and Regulations for the conduct of their primaries.

“The Commission emphasises the need for the conduct of free, fair and peaceful primary elections that reflect the will of the party members as a panacea for the reduction of pre-election litigations.

“We observed that primary elections have often been a source of pre-election litigations which can be avoided if parties follow the laid-down procedures and guidelines.

“INEC, therefore, urges all political parties to ensure that their primaries are conducted in a transparent, democratic, and peaceful manner.

”All aspirants should be given equal opportunities to participate,” he said.

Agboke said that in line with the guidelines released by INEC National Headquarters, political parties’ primaries for the 2026 governorship election in the state are scheduled to hold between Nov. 24 and Dec. 15.

He said the Commission was prepared to provide necessary support and guidance to parties to ensure that their primaries are conducted in accordance with the law.

“We call on all stakeholders, including security agencies, to support the Commission in its efforts to ensure peaceful and credible party primaries.

“INEC will continue to monitor the activities of political parties and take appropriate actions within the ambit of the law against any party that fails to comply with the electoral laws and regulations,” he said.
