  • Justice belongs in courts, not on streets, Dare tells Sowore

Justice belongs in courts, not on streets, Dare tells Sowore

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Chief Sunday Dare, has cautioned activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, against using street protests to influence judicial proceedings, insisting that matters of justice are resolved in courtrooms, not through public agitation.

Reacting to Monday’s #FreeNnamdiKanu protest in Abuja led by Sowore, Dare, in a post on his verified X handle, @SundayDareSD, described such demonstrations as “counterproductive” and inimical to the rule of law.

“Protests, threats, attempts at mob actions, and inflammatory rhetoric do not aid the judicial process. Instead, they hinder it, creating unnecessary tension and undermining the rule of law,” he stated.

The presidential aide said Sowore’s “pastime of PR agitation and courting of public sympathy to interfere with judicial proceedings is outdated and counterproductive in a modern democracy,” stressing that such actions would not be tolerated in any law-abiding society.

“You cannot employ protest and civil unrest to demand the release of someone accused of terrorism and whose case is still in court. Not even in America,” Dare said.

He clarified that the case of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), long predates President Bola Tinubu’s administration and remains strictly under judicial consideration.

According to him, “This administration respects the independence of the courts and will not interfere in ongoing legal proceedings.”

While reaffirming the President’s commitment to justice and constitutional order, Dare warned that freedom and democracy “have their limits,” adding that “testing these limits will invite the full application of the laws as clearly stated.

“The judiciary should be let alone to do its work without interference. President Tinubu remains committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice is served fairly and transparently,” he said.

  • ADC suspends ex-Minister for alleged anti-party

ADC suspends ex-Minister for alleged anti-party

Opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) has suspended its National Vice Chairman (South-South), Dr. Usani Usani, with immediate effect, over alleged violation of party’s constitution and engaging in activities deemed detrimental to the unity and progress of the party.

The decision to this effect was reached at a meeting of the Cross River State Working Committee (SWC) of the party in Calabar last week.

The SWC also called for the replacement of the Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ms. Jackie Wayas as Deputy National Publicity Secretary, for lack of consultation with the state leadership before she was appointed

A statement by the ADC Cross River Publicity Secretary,  Hon. James Otudor, in Abuja on Monday, faulted Usani’s recent conducts, which he alleged were inconsistent with the provisions of the party’s Constitution.

The statement noted the SWC deliberated on several petitions and reports that accused Usani of anti-party activities, insubordination to constituted authority, and other acts capable of undermining the image, cohesion, and electoral prospects of the ADC ahead of 2027 general elections.

The statement reads: “In accordance with the party’s constitution and disciplinary procedures, Dr. Usani’s suspension will remain in effect pending the outcome of a formal investigation by the relevant party organs.”

The committee also raised issues regarding the appointment of Ms. Jackie Wayas as Deputy National Publicity Secretary, expressing dissatisfaction over what it described as a lack of consultation with the state leadership prior to her appointment.

It observed that Ms. Wayas has not engaged with the Cross River State leadership since assuming the role and alleged that her current disposition and loyalty appear to be skewed against the unity and growth of the ADC in the state.

“Consequently, the SWC urged the National Leadership to review her appointment and replace her with a competent, credible, and media-savvy individual from Cross River State with a verifiable record of commitment to the ideals of the ADC.

“In addition, the Cross River ADC expressed concern over certain individuals under the Coalition Movement who publicly declared their intention to join the ADC but have yet to formalize their membership months after doing so.

“While acknowledging that party registration is a continuous process, the committee warned that the ADC will not tolerate dual membership or allow its platform to be used by individuals pursuing multiple partisan interests.

“It further noted that some coalition members who participated in ADC strategy meetings have since accepted caretaker or leadership positions in their former political parties.”

The statement directed all coalition leaders and intending members to complete their registration at their respective ward levels within seven days, ending Saturday, October 25, 2025, or risk exclusion from leadership and decision-making processes within the party.

Reaffirming its loyalty to the National Leadership, the ADC Cross River chapter assured members and supporters of its commitment to providing credible leadership and a people-centered alternative political direction for the state and the South-South region

“We urge all members to remain calm, law-abiding, and steadfast as the party’s internal mechanisms for discipline, justice, and accountability take their full course,” the statement maintained.

Bayelsa APC waiting to receive Governor Diri – Aganaba

Following the announcement of his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), speculations have intensified over the next political move of Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, with strong indications that he and his supporters may soon join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Reacting to the development, the Executive Director of Social and Human Capital Development at the South South Development Commission and a founding chieftain of the APC in Bayelsa State, Preye Aganaba, expressed delight at the readiness of the party to welcome the governor into its fold.

Speaking during an interview on Rhythm 94.7 FM in Yenagoa, the state capital, Aganaba said Diri’s reported decision to align with the ruling party was not surprising.

“The kind of impactful leadership and bold reforms led by President Bola Tinubu have unlocked enormous resources for governors to carry out development in their various states. It is only natural for those who are people-oriented to align with the President,” he said.

Aganaba added that the formal reception of Governor Diri would be handled by the national leadership of the party, noting that the state chapter would follow their direction.

On the development front, the Odi-born politician expressed optimism that greater unity among political leaders would attract more infrastructural projects to Bayelsa State.

Responding to rumours that former President Goodluck Jonathan may contest the 2027 elections, Aganaba cast doubt on such reports, describing Jonathan as a respected statesman now more focused on mentoring the next generation of leaders.

  • Enugu’s return to mainstream politics

    Enugu’s return to mainstream politics

Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Deputy Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU examines the implication of the political shift for the state and the Southeast.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lost a stronghold in the Southeast to protracted crisis, acrimony and rivalry among top leaders of the distressed opposition party.

Peter Mbah, loyal, reticent and promising governor of Enugu State, has dumped what his vast supporters described as a sinking ship, after months of warning.

No authentic member of his political family is left behind. Other prominent leaders of the drowning PDP chapter, commissioners, special advisers, lawmakers and the entire grassroots leaders left with him.

Former Governors Sullivan Chime and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, former Senate President Ken Nnamani, and other leading lights have earlier called it quits with the platform that become fragile due to internal contradictions.

His departure marked the end of an era for the major opposition in Enugu and indeed, the entire Southeast.

For 26 years, PDP bestrode the state and made it a no-go area for other competing political parties. But due to its inability to manage its achievements, it has lost political control, influence and relevance. Its loss became the gain of the ruling party.

Mbah is not a baby politician in Enugu and the region, although he is not boisterous. Calm and calculating, the lawyer is a deep thinker, resourceful administrator, effective planner and result-driven personality, who has no time for frivolities. These qualties have made him a resounding success in the world of business where he had made a great impact.

His warning that the region was been sidelined or excluded by the PDP was ignored without justification. Pretending to be its old self, party gerontocrats proposed a slow-motion problem-solving approach in a jet age, oblivious of the fact that the clamour for inclusion is the anthem of the millenium.

The bone of contention is the position of the PDP National Secretary that had fuelled regional division and acrimony. While the legal option provided a solution, it was not complemented with political solution through dialogue and peace building.

Reality dawned on the distant PDP leaders who encamped in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as the entire Enugu structures collapsed into the APC. The transformation was instant as the governor became the state APC leader, and without any problem of harmonisation of old and new structures.

Today, PDP has no footing again in the Southeast. Governors of Enugu, Imo and Ebonyi are in APC. Governor Alex Otti of Imo belongs to the the Labour Party and Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra is in the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). In 2027, none of them would have anything to do with the PDP and African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The crowd was huge. It was not a rented gatherning mobilised by pecks or any financial inducement. The first ceremony was the announcement of the political transition by the soft-spoken governor. With him at the press conference were prominent members of the APC  National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC, including Deputy National Chairman (North), Ali Bukar Dalori, his Southern counterpart, Emma Eneukwu, National Secretary Senator Ajibola Basiru, and Organising Secretary, Alhaji Sulaiman Argungu.

The second was the grand rally at Okpara Square, Enugu, the state capital, where he was received to the ruling party by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, National Secretary Dr. Ajibola Basiru,Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, Senator Orji Kalu, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, his Ogun, Imo and Ekiti counterparts – Dapo Abiodun, Hope Uzodimma and Biodun Oyebanji.

None could arguably fault his decision for jumping ship. He said it was a collective resolve of dedicated party faithful who are driven by the desire to protect the interest of the state. The governor said the decision was taken after a long and deep reflection.

He said: “This is no whimsical decision. It is a collective move by the political family in Enugu State, comprising members of the National Assembly, members of the State House of Assembly, the State Executive Council, all the local government chairmen, all councillors, all political appointees, and over 80 percent of party executives.

“We have no axe to grind, no personal point to make. But fairness, respect and integrity must guide our choices for that future to be ours. Today, in joining the APC, we are embracing a visionary partnership. I have found in His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, not just a leader of our nation, but a partner in purpose, a man with the courage to look beyond today and make the tough choices that secure lasting prosperity for tomorrow.”

The governor said their decision to join the APC would bring about a new era of development and progress to Enugu State.

Mbah reflected on the atmosphere of suffocation in the PDP which could no more be endured. He said the party tried to take the state and the region for a ride.

He said: “For nearly three decades, the PDP and the people of Enugu walked side by side, united by shared purpose. Together, we built relationships that will always matter to me personally and to this state.

“Yet, leadership sometimes demands difficult – even painful – decisions in the service of higher principles and goals. And there always comes a time when everyone must make a bold choice to determine their destiny.

“Over the past months, I have thought carefully about the path forward. In the end, after much soul searching and discussion, I have concluded that we must stand for the principles and institutions that honour transparency, trust, and above all – the people we serve.”

Mbah added: “For decades, the South East – especially Enugu – has stood firmly behind the PDP, showing loyalty that shaped the party’s success. Yet despite this history, our voices were too often disregarded when it mattered most. It has therefore, become necessary to seek affiliation where our interests as a region are represented in the form of fair partnership,” he said, adding that going forward “the voice of Enugu people and indeed, that of the Southeast people would now be heard in Abuja.”

The governor thanked the PDP, “which provided us the platform on which we campaigned and won, I extend deep gratitude.”

He said “the PDP supported us through a demanding campaign and joined us in celebrating the victory.”

Mbah  hailed Bola Ahmed Tinubu for exhibiting courage and decisiveness. He said: “Some choices demand sacrifice. Removing subsidies, unifying our foreign exchange markets, confronting crippling inefficiency – these are not easy decisions. But these are the smart choices that free resources for investment in our people.

“His Excellency, the President has shown he is not afraid to make the tough decisions for a fair and stable nation. And here in Enugu, we have been just as audacious.

“This move is bigger than politics – it is about alignment at scale. It is about connecting Enugu’s destiny with the central hub of broader reforms shaping our nation.”

The governor raised some puzzles: Will the voice of Enugu be heard now in Abuja?

How will the change affect our progress at home? How will your lives be touched by this decision?

He said: “Let me be clear, I will represent our state and our region with the same strength of purpose as I have always done. Our Igbo DNA does not change; our destiny does not change. What changes is that our vision now finds stronger reinforcement at the federal level.

“The progress you see today will not slow, and the projects we have begun will be completed. Yes, there have been challenges and delays along the way, but make no mistake – schools, hospitals, roads, and our services will be finished as promised.

“To the political elite across the South East, I say this: our people are watching. What they care about most are results. True leadership is about service to the people, not service to self. Principles, not personalities, must guide us.”

Shettima, who represented Tinubu at tge rally, described Mbah’s defection as a defining moment for Ndigbo and the nation.

He said: “Today is a great day in our great nation; indeed, a great day in Ndigbo. Ali Mazrui, the great Kenyan writer, once described the Igbo as the Nigerian Jews—geographically mobile, economically enterprising and educationally ambitious. Sadly, in the last 10 to 12 years, Ndigbo, one of the most vibrant tribes in Africa, have been at the margins of Nigerian politics.

“Now with the coming of Governor Peter Mbah, with the continuous energy of Governor Hope Uzodimma and Governor Francis Nwifuru, I believe the Ndigbo have come back to the mainstream of Nigerian politics.”

Shettima described President Tinubu as a leader with a “sense of inclusion” who rewards merit over sentiment. He said under his leadership,  APC has become “the most formidable political party in Africa.”

Turning to Mbah on the podium, he said: “You are already one of us. You are a progressive through and through. I believe you had a broom hidden in your umbrella for all these years, waiting for the right moment to bring it out.

“From our convention and constitution, the governor is the leader of the party in his state. Your Excellency, you are now the leader of the APC family in Enugu State. We are one big family tied in common destiny. Be rest assured that you will be treated justly and fairly.”

To the APC governors, Mbah is a big catch. Uzodimma, who chairs the Progressives Governors Forum (PGF), hailed him for joining the party, saying that it is a major step toward regional integration.

He added: “Earlier this morning, the governor addressed the world and informed us of his decision to join the All Progressives Congress. We, in the South -East, are very excited and very happy.

“On behalf of the Progressives Governors Forum, I welcome everyone to Enugu and congratulate our dear brother and friend, Peter Mbah, for taking the wise decision to join the APC to strengthen the excellent work our dear President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is doing in Nigeria. This decision has once again strengthened our integration into national politics.”

To Akpabio,  Mbah’s defection is the beginning of “a journey that will bring more development and progress to Enugu State.”

He stressed: This is a journey that will bring more development. This is a journey that will bring more progress. I am a man who believes in progress.

“The entire Senate is here. Your principal officer, Osita Ngwu, was the only PDP senator in the whole of the South -East. He told me he was going with the governor wherever he was going because he is performing.

“We are all here because we are very happy. My wife is from Enugu, and my children are relocating to Enugu. What I am seeing here — this state is even more beautiful than Abuja. I think the only place that compares to it is Akwa Ibom when I was governor.”

Kalu, former governor of Abia State, spoke in Igbo. He spoke in Igbo commended Mbah for joining the train of progress.

Kalu said: “The Vice President is here to welcome your governor to the APC in the name of the President. Since tomorrow is here, it is good for tomorrow to join APC.

“The Vice President has come to welcome him to a place where there is progress. You know that the whole South -East has agreed to move to APC. We are all here to honour your governor.”

Yilwatda described Mbah as “a progressive mind who could no longer be contained in the PDP.

He said: Enugu State is welcome to APC. Governor Peter Mbah, thank you for taking this right decision. You took your people from Egypt to the Promised Land, from depression to progress.

“Today we are seeing the new Enugu State. The PDP cannot house the kind of progressive mind that you have. As I was coming, I saw the roads, the water, the electricity, the schools — you have touched virtually all sectors. The APC is proud to welcome you and your team, as we see this defection as a return home to progress and success.

“On behalf of the National Working Committee and millions of APC members, I welcome you to this family. I welcome you to progress. I welcome you to success.”

  • I’ve nothing against Benjamin Kalu- Otti

I’ve nothing against Benjamin Kalu- Otti

Abia Governor Alex Otti has stated that he doesn’t hold any grudge against Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu over his (Kalu’s) recent statement about his (Otti’s) administration in the State.

Otti, who stated this while reacting to a question during the media chat with journalists at the Banquet Hall, Government, Umuahia, the state capital, however cautioned Kalu and other politicians to refrain from making statements that would heat up the state’s political space.

On Kalu’s allegation of not using the money that the State Government receives as monthly allocations from the Federal Government judiciously, Otti said “You will find out that this is the second time that he (Benjamin Kalu) has come out publicly to berate the administration and myself. I think that I want to forgive him.

“Do I feel threatened, absolutely No. but then, you know that people are different. I guessed that what happened is that, he was a bit terrified because he was there in Aba and saw what happened. He saw the organic show of love that Aba people showed and it also happened in Umuahia.

“I think that he has a few challenges; one of them is hubris and closely related to that challenge is Information Deficiency Syndrome where you are supposed to be in a place that you are supposed to have information, but you don’t have the real information.

“The first time that he did a video, early this year, I was asked here and I said that, I have no response. The only response that I gave was that I don’t have the anointing to speak about what will happen in 2027 by 2025 and I still maintain that I don’t have that anointing.

“I have a mandate and that mandate, runs till 2027. If someone can stand up and say that, this is what can happen in 2027, who am I to question him?

“But there a few things that I know; I know that power belongs to God. And I know that He gives it to who he wants. Those I can assure you that I know.

“And like I told them the other day in the church service, I also know about what is written in the Book of Lamentations; that we should not speak when the Lord has not spoken. I am saying this because we are all Christians.

“It will be sad for someone to come out and say that the State Government receives up to N38bn. Whatever that person said should be taken very seriously. Those who know better know that we receive just about half of that.

“For me, I think people should focus on the jobs that they have been given. I heard that he (Kalu) wants to run for governorship position in 2027; that is fine. It is his fundamental human right, nobody should stop him.

” But again, we must respect the law. If INEC releases the time table and say that, this is the time that campaigns start, if he starts campaigning before then, you put yourself in harm sway. He can even be disqualified before the election.

“He is campaigning by telling people that they are going to take over the state in 2027 and it is not right. If he wants to campaign, I will plead with him to hold his fire and wait. Once INEC blows the whistle, he can go and pick up the form and begin to campaign.

“It is for Abia people to decide who will be their Governor. It is also important that the APC that he s talking about which has leadership to know that they are being de-marketed in Abia State. But I will call on our people to still hold their peace and calm. We have managed in the last two years plus to keep the state peaceful and we should continue to maintain the peace.”

Osun 2026: Imams seek zoning of Gov tickets to Osogbo

The Senate of League of Imams in Osogbo has advocated for all political parties in Osun State to zone their 2026 governorship tickets to Osogbo, the state capital.

The group known as Alasaro of Osogbo through its President, Sheikh Ilyas Afolabi Alawe in a statement over the weekend said all Osogbo indigenes are united in the demand that its the turn of Osogbo to produce Governor of Osun State.

He stated that Osogbo being a historic town in old Western Nigeria, formerly part of old Oyo State and now the capital of Osun, has played a decisive role in determining who occupies the Bola Ige Government House.

According to him: “No son or daughter of Osogbo has ever been elected Governor since the state’s creation 34 years ago. The elders, community leaders, and stakeholders are determined to change this in 2026.

“We can start with the forthcoming governorship election by rallying behind our competent sons and daughters from various political parties vying for the seat.”

Also, the Chairman of the Osogbo Elders Council, Prince Adeleke Ibiloye, backed the zoning of the 2026 governorship seat to Osogbo.

He said: “We have, over time, stood firmly behind other towns that sought our support for their own in various political capacities. It is now time to extend that same hand of fellowship and support to our very own. It is our turn to produce the next governor of this state in 2026, and we believe those we have supported in the past will now repay our good gestures.”

Members of the dissolved Enugu State Executive Committee (SEC) of All Progressives Congress (APC) led by Ugochukwu Agballah have vowed to challenge their removal in court.

The party’s National Working Committee (NWC), at its 179th meeting on October 9, 2025, at the national secretariat, dissolved the Ugochukwu Agballah-led SEC and appointed a seven-man caretaker committee headed by former state chairman, Dr. Ben Nwoye.

But the affected members in a statement described the NWC’s action as unconstitutional.

Citing Articles 21.1 to 21.3 of the APC Constitution, the aggrieved officials argued that disciplinary jurisdiction lies with the South-East Zonal Executive Committee, not the NWC.

“The dissolution of the Enugu SEC flagrantly contravenes the APC Constitution and undermines fairness, equity, and due process,” they said in a statement, urging all party officers in the state to remain in office and continue their duties.

NYCN warns youths against joining Sowore’s protest for IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu

The Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has cautioned youths against participating in a planned protest scheduled for October 20, 2025.

The planned protest is spearheaded by activist Omoyele Sowore over the continued detention of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Chairman of the NYCN Interim Management Committee, Barr. Buhari Shehu, in a statement on Sunday, disclosed that the Federal Government, through the Police Force, has obtained an order from the Federal High Court in Abuja restraining the organisers and participants from holding the protest.

The organisation also noted the United States Embassy in Abuja had issued an advisory to its nationals in Nigeria with regards to their movement in the nation’s capital.

Shehu warned youths to avoid areas where the protest might take place tomorrow.

The statement reads: “This development should serve as a serious precautionary signal to Nigerian youths about the potential dangers of joining the demonstration.

“In light of this development, we urge all Nigerian youths to exercise restraint and stay out of trouble. We are concerned that the planned protest may lead to a breakdown of law and order, which could put lives and property at risk.”

The organisation advised young Nigerians to channel their grievances and demands through lawful and peaceful means rather than resorting to street protests that could be hijacked by mischief-makers.

It added: “We remain committed to promoting youth welfare, peace, and development in Nigeria. We will continue to work with relevant stakeholders to address the challenges facing our youth and our nation.

“We have no other country and place to live than Nigeria, and we all must come together to safeguard our dear nation.”

Adelabu promises to end 15-year epileptic power supply in Ibarapa zone

The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has pledged to end the 15 years of epileptic power supply in Ibarapa zone of Oyo State.

Adelabu, who is also a gubernatorial aspirant of All Progressive Congress (APC) in 2027, said Ibarapa residents would begin to see improvement in electricity supply because his Ministry has secured fund for the completion of three power substation in the zone.

Speaking in Eruwa while meeting APC leaders, stakeholders and members in Ibarapa zone, the Minister noted that adequate electricity supply in Ibarapa region has become a major concern to him.

Ibarapa land consists of seven towns of  Eruwa, Lanlate, Igboora, Idere, Ayete, Tapa, and Igangan.

Adelabu promised to complete the three power substation before he leaves office as Power Minister, adding that work will commence on them in the next one week.

According to him: “We’ve identified and diagnosed the issue of electricity in Ibarapa. Previously, the challenge was scarce resources, but we have now secured the release of sufficient funds to complete the substation in Ibarapa and upgrade the existing infrastructure.

“As you can see, we’ve started delivering transformers as part of our efforts. Similarly, we’ve begun lighting up road sides and major clusters. Ibarapa, please relax; I give you my word that the project will be completed and commissioned before I leave office.”

Adelabu, during a consultation and reconciliation meeting with stakeholders of the party in Ibadan city, which was organised by Oyo State APC Reconciliation Team, Ibadan Southwest chapter urged leaders, stakeholders and members of the party to embrace genuine reconciliation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Minister said the step became necessary so that members of the party can be in unity, speak with one voice and wrestle power from People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 2027.

According to him, all party members should set aside their difference and forge alliances.

The Minister, who said his governorship ambition is not a do-or-die affair maintained that the state belongs to progressive and must return to progressive fold in 2027 elections.
